Dr. Laura Williams did not come from a dental family, but by the age of 12 she knew she wanted to be a dentist. Growing up in rural West Virginia, Laura and her family did not know any female dentists to serve as a role model, but her parents valued higher education and encouraged her on this career path. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Concord University, the local state college where both her parents worked, and was accepted to the West Virginia University School of Dentistry in 2001. Upon graduation, Dr. Williams returned to her hometown where she spent the next 16 years working as an associate in four different dental offices, having babies and learning as much as she could about how to successfully run her own practice. Finally, in 2021, the opportunity to purchase a thriving dental practice only 5 minutes from her house presented itself and Williams Family Dentistry was born. Even though the path to ownership seemed bumpy and discouraging at times, Dr. Williams is grateful for every hardship, heartbreak and crazy experience because they helped hone her into the dentist and boss she is today. When she's not fixing teeth, Dr. Williams enjoys quilting, reading and traveling with her husband, Gary, and their 4 children.

The life expectancy of Americans has fallen in recent years after a long period when it had been increasing. There are a number of factors which contribute to the fall. The Covid pandemic, with over 1m deaths, made a significant impact on lowering the average life expectancy. In comparison with other peer countries, the USA also did not return to pre-Covid levels at the same rate. However there are also other important factors driving this, namely gun deaths and drug deaths as a result of opioid overdoses. And another major contributor to lower life expectancy in the States is inequality in the US healthcare system. In this edition of The Inquiry Tanya Beckett explores why US life expectancy is falling. She hears from Jeremy Ney an adjunct professor at Presidio Graduate School in San Francisco and author of American Inequality, a data project that highlights US inequality and regional divides. Dr. Mark Rosenberg helped set up the Centre for Disease Control's National Centre for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) and is a key proponent of research that examines how to reduce gun violence. He explains how gun deaths among young people have a big influence on the average life expectancy numbers. Dr. Judith Feinberg, is a professor at West Virginia University School of Medicine - her experience of working with communities with high levels of opioid problems makes her an authority on the extent to which drug overdose deaths impact average life expectancy. Ellen Marra is a professor of health economics at Harvard University - she says that diseases such as cancer and cardio deaths are big factors in lower life expectancy, compared with the number of gun and opioid deaths. We got to hang out with The Dental Guys at the Voices of Dentistry Podcast Summit in Nashville, TN. We had a great time getting to know Jon and Wes and also talked about some very relevant dental topics. This podcast happens to strike the perfect balance of content and goofing off— much to the credit of The Dental Guys for keeping us in-line. Enjoy Part Two of our two-hour podcast with The Dental Guys! The Dental Guys podcast is the brainchild project of Wes and Jon. Years ago Wes and Jon met at a continuing education event and immediately started a passionate on-going conversation about dentistry. This conversation never ended and instead expanded to become the basis for the podcast. Jon is a 2006 graduate of the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine and has always wanted to excel in his dental practice. He has completed more than 1000 hours of continuing education including traveling abroad to train on dental implant therapy. Jon is passionate about research and evidence-based practice and is not afraid to question the routines that dentists get into over a career. You can often find him reading a journal during his lunch break. Wes is a graduate of West Virginia University School of Dentistry in 2003 and University of Tennessee General Practice residency in 2004. He maintains a private practice and is an instructor and attending for UT Medical Center. Wes has attained fellowship status in the AGD and continues to train to learn advanced techniques. He has over 13 years experience with dental implant placement and complex restorations. Wes has always been on the cutting edge of technology in his practice and in his life and he brings this knowledge to the table on the podcast. The Dental Guys podcast is dedicated to helping our fellow dentists take their clinical practice to the next level through discussing controversial and complex topics, reviewing dental research to see how it affects clinical practice, and sharing our combined experience as we learn together with our listeners.
