Dr. Laura Williams did not come from a dental family, but by the age of 12 she knew she wanted to be a dentist. Growing up in rural West Virginia, Laura and her family did not know any female dentists to serve as a role model, but her parents valued higher education and encouraged her on this career path. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Concord University, the local state college where both her parents worked, and was accepted to the West Virginia University School of Dentistry in 2001. Upon graduation, Dr. Williams returned to her hometown where she spent the next 16 years working as an associate in four different dental offices, having babies and learning as much as she could about how to successfully run her own practice. Finally, in 2021, the opportunity to purchase a thriving dental practice only 5 minutes from her house presented itself and Williams Family Dentistry was born. Even though the path to ownership seemed bumpy and discouraging at times, Dr. Williams is grateful for every hardship, heartbreak and crazy experience because they helped hone her into the dentist and boss she is today. When she's not fixing teeth, Dr. Williams enjoys quilting, reading and traveling with her husband, Gary, and their 4 children.

The life expectancy of Americans has fallen in recent years after a long period when it had been increasing. There are a number of factors which contribute to the fall. The Covid pandemic, with over 1m deaths, made a significant impact on lowering the average life expectancy. In comparison with other peer countries, the USA also did not return to pre-Covid levels at the same rate. However there are also other important factors driving this, namely gun deaths and drug deaths as a result of opioid overdoses. And another major contributor to lower life expectancy in the States is inequality in the US healthcare system. In this edition of The Inquiry Tanya Beckett explores why US life expectancy is falling. She hears from Jeremy Ney an adjunct professor at Presidio Graduate School in San Francisco and author of American Inequality, a data project that highlights US inequality and regional divides. Dr. Mark Rosenberg helped set up the Centre for Disease Control's National Centre for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) and is a key proponent of research that examines how to reduce gun violence. He explains how gun deaths among young people have a big influence on the average life expectancy numbers. Dr. Judith Feinberg, is a professor at West Virginia University School of Medicine - her experience of working with communities with high levels of opioid problems makes her an authority on the extent to which drug overdose deaths impact average life expectancy. Ellen Marra is a professor of health economics at Harvard University - she says that diseases such as cancer and cardio deaths are big factors in lower life expectancy, compared with the number of gun and opioid deaths. Does maternal vaping cause brain blood vessels to behave abnormally in offspring? The short answer: yes. Consulting Editor Junie Paula Warrington (University of Mississippi Medical Center) interviews authors Mark Olfert and Paul Chantler (both at West Virginia University School of Medicine), along with expert Alex Carll (University of Louisville) about the latest groundbreaking study by Burrage et al. The authors set out to understand whether exposing pregnant female rats to a low daily dose of e-cigarette aerosol—with or without nicotine—would result in middle cerebral artery dysfunction in the offspring. In this unique study design, the offspring themselves were never directly exposed to e-cigarettes. Olfert, Chantler and co-authors then assessed vascular function in arteries from the brain in pups at multiple postnatal time-points, and found the offspring had significant reduction in the ability of the middle cerebral artery to relax (or vasodilate) when they needed to. The same levels of dysfunction were found in offspring whose mothers were exposed to vaping with nicotine added to the base e-liquid, as well as offspring of mothers who were exposed to vaping without nicotine in the base e-liquid. This data suggested that some component of the e-liquid other than nicotine (such as flavors or base solution) accounted for the dysfunction that was created. What's more, the authors discovered that the cerebrovascular dysfunction did not resolve over time. Adult rats, even 7 months after birth, displayed similar levels of impairment as the 1-month-old rat pups. In this 4 part series Women Leading in a Crisis, we connected with another CPO of a large health system, LeeAnn Miller. She is the Vice President and Chief Pharmacy Officer for System Pharmacy Services at Yale-New Haven Health (YNHH). LeeAnn is responsible for advancing pharmacy services to drive high-value care for patients and the community. Yale New Haven Health is comprised of 5 Delivery Networks spanning the Connecticut shoreline and Rhode Island. LeeAnn oversees approximately 950 FTEs spanning acute care and ambulatory services inclusive of retail and specialty pharmacy. LeeAnn completed her undergraduate training at West Virginia University School of Pharmacy where she also earned a Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Policy. She later completed a post-graduate doctor of pharmacy degree at Shenandoah University in Virginia. During the Covid-19 crisis, we've heard anecdotally about women leaders doing a better job and new research backs that up. One study found that outcomes related to Covid-19, including number of cases and deaths, were systematically better in countries led by women. Another looked at governors in the U.S. and similarly found that states with female leaders had lower fatality rates. Pharmacy has and will play maybe even a bigger role in 2021 as we roll out the COVID vaccine, and each of these ladies has been interviewed by media about the #vaccine and represented the pharmacy profession well!

Dr. Mark Cucuzzella is the author of the new book Run for Your Life—all about how to achieve longevity in the sport—and has finished marathons in under three hours for 30 straight years. But at one point earlier in his career, he was told he’d have to give up running altogether. For this week’s episode of #WeGotGoals, I caught up with Cucuzzella in Austin at The Running Event, a trade show for running retailers. The way he overcame setbacks serves as a powerful example of charting your own path to your goals—and how slow, steady progress really can lead to major accomplishments. Cucuzzella—who’s now a professor at West Virginia University School of Medicine, a family physician, shoe-store owner, and race director, among other titles—started running in high school. Back then, he told me, coaches and sports scientists didn’t understand nearly as much as they do now about training methods and biomechanics. “We just ran as hard as we could until we broke, repeat,” he said. He continued to train through college and beyond, finding the sport provided a welcome source of stress relief and focus during medical school. And he ran well—he came close to qualifying for the 2000 Olympic Trials in the marathon. The time he needed was two hours and 22 minutes; he ran a 2:24:42 at the Chicago Marathon in 1999. But he was still training hard, putting his body through more than it could bear. After that race, he needed surgery to correct a bent big toe and arthritis in his foot. His doctors said he’d never run again, at least not any more than a jog—and definitely not at a competitive level. By then, Cucuzzella knew enough not to accept that without questioning. “I’d realized pretty early in my medical career … things were constantly changing,” he said. Referencing a historic Harvard commencement address, he said: “Half of what we learned in med school is wrong. We’re just spending a career trying to find out the half that’s right.” Besides, he had a border collie mix who wasn’t satisfied with walking. So, he began jogging slowly. About six months later, he lined up at the Marine Corps Marathon without ever picking up the pace on this training runs—and finished in less than two and a half hours, taking third place. What’s more, he felt a sense of peace and joy while doing it: “I’d never felt that easy before in a marathon,” he said. “it just opened the doors to all the things yet to discover.” Since then, he’s kept nearly all his running easy, only speeding up during a few key workouts leading up to a race. As a result, he hasn’t missed a day due to injury. His low-key approach to training and his method of open-minded self-experimentation, rather than blindly accepting conventional wisdom, form the basis for his career—and his new book. It’s a volume jam-packed with ways to assess where you are as an athlete and suggestions for small changes based on the results. “It’s like a little menu,” he said. Using the self-tests he provides can help you identify your weaknesses in mobility, nutrition, and even sport psychology—whether that’s tight hips, an over-reliance on sugary carbs, or a mind panicked by stress—and start to shift them so you can not only run more and better but also live a longer, healthier life. And healthier is the key, Cucuzzella stresses. Though Americans tend to live long lives, our “healthspan”—the amount of time we survive without major medical problems—ranks low. Fortunately, he said, there’s a lot we can do to care for our bodies and reduce our risk of chronic diseases. Listen to the full episode of #WeGotGoals to hear more about how Cucuzzella is trying to put his ideas into action on a larger scale (for instance, speaking out about his opinions on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans); how writing the book was like running a marathon (or perhaps 19 marathons); and how big goals and challenges like races add not only motivation but also meaning to our lives. What do you do when you experience significant injury after injury, so much so that surgery no longer helps and most doctors tell you it's time to hang up the running shoes? You hang up your shoes and try natural running, of course. In 2000, Dr. Mark Cucuzzella did just that. After suffering for years from arthritis in his toes, Mark was told by his doctors to stop his running. However, Mark couldn't give up on his passion, so he began to research and scientifically explore how natural running shoes could help save his career. What Dr. Mark found was nothing short of remarkable. By running barefoot and in natural running shoes he was able to run pain-free and injury-free for the first time in years. In this podcast, we interview Dr. Mark Cucuzzella and find out exactly what he did, why it worked, and how you can do the same. Dr. Cucuzzella is widely considered to be one of the leading experts on how and why to incorporate and transition to minimalist running. Mark is a Professor of Family Medicine at West Virginia University School of Medicine. His marathon best is 2:24 and has run under 2:40 for a marathon 24 of the last 25 years, with 22 of these years being run under 2:35. He won the 2011 Air Force Marathon in 2:38, a week shy of his 45th birthday. He attributes much of this longevity to good running form and minimalist principles. And that's what he's here to teach you today. If you've been thinking about how, or if you should, transition to natural running shoes, you've got to listen to this interview.
