With a lifelong dream of service and a family of military veterans, Jason had always felt a call to service. Jason gave up a high-school golf scholarship to join the U.S. Airforce, and later took a job with the Arizona public service where he worked while raising his family. It wasn't until March 26, 1999, when Police Officer Marc Atkins was shot and killed after being ambushed by suspected drug traffickers that Jason decided to pursue a dream of becoming a police officer. Shortly after becoming an officer, however, Jason was struck while on patrol and burned over 40% of his body. Inside this episode, we talk with Jason about his experience and recovery after the night of his accident, why he believes so passionately about the gift of tissue donation, and his journey to getting back out into the world as a burn survivor. Jason's story will inspire, motivate, and encourage you to join forces this month in honor of Donate Life month to become an organ donor yourself!About Jason SchechterleGrowing up, Jason had one dream - to serve as a Phoenix Police Officer. Inspired by the tragic loss of a local law enforcement hero, Jason worked persistently toward his dream. After serving four years in the Air Force, at the age of 26, Jason achieved his goal to work on the streets of Phoenix as a rookie police officer. Then, only 14 months into what was supposed to be a lifelong career, Jason's life took an unexpected, dramatic, and, at the time, tragic turn.On the night of March 26th, 2001, a taxi cab crashed into the rear of Jason's patrol car. Upon impact, Jason's car burst into flames, trapping him inside with temperatures reaching over 700 degrees.Through a series of miraculous and fateful circumstances, Jason survived the crash and the ensuing physical and emotional catastrophe. He suffered severe burns to over 40% of his body which drastically altered his appearance. He has undergone more than 55 surgeries just to have the ability to accomplish simple daily tasks we often take for granted. Jason's journey chronicles his fight for life, his triumph over tragedy, and the inspiration that enables him to continue to overcome unimaginable adversity. His personal narrative exemplifies that the power of the human spirit can never be underestimated or extinguished. His story is one of life, rebirth, and transformation. Jason represents the human experience at its very best - an ascent from despair to describing himself as the luckiest person alive!Resources from the ShowSupport Donate LifeLearn More About Donate Life MonthVisit Jason's websiteFollow Jason on InstagramFollow Jason on TwitterJoin Jason on LinkedInLearn more about Jason & Valleywise HealthRead about Tombstone (Jason's favorite movie)Learn more about Community Tissue ServicesRead Jason Schecterie's Phoenix Society articleRead about ways survivors honor their burniversariesWhat is the burniversary effect? Fifty-seven-year-old Ted Garding is Mayo Clinic's first altruistic living liver donor. The living liver donation program allows a healthy person to donate a portion of his or her liver, which then regenerates over time. What makes Ted's story even better? He's a two-time altruistic organ donor, having previously donated a kidney back in 2010. An altruistic, or nondirected living donor, is a person who donates an organ, usually a kidney, and does not name or have an intended recipient. "We were taught to help people in need, and we were blessed with good health in our family," says Ted. "And I am well aware that there are a lot of people that aren't as fortunate. Being kind to people and helping people in need has always been the most important thing to me."When Ted heard about living liver donation, he applied at Mayo Clinic, but expected he might get denied because he has one kidney and is in his 50s. But Ted was accepted, and in October 2021, the transplant happened in Rochester, Minnesota. The recipient reached out a few days later to thank him and told Ted he was her "guardian angel.""My own personal experience as a double living organ donor, personally, it's changed my life for the better," says Ted. "When you help someone in need, you're naturally going to feel better. I feel as though I've been blessed and that I am the one who received a gift." April is National Donate Life Month to raise awareness of the need for organ donors. In honor of Donate Life Month, Ted joins the Mayo Clinic Q&A podcast to share his story.

April is Donate Life Month, and we examine many challenges facing organ transplant recipients. Amidst the physical and emotional toll of surgery, many patients also have to juggle apartment searching, moving, and financing a second home or apartment while they recover. And insurance companies refuse to cover these expenses.Denise Redeker, Founder and CEO of Heartfelt Help Foundation, shares her experience undergoing a heart transplant, her move to Silicon Valley for the procedure, and how her organization helps other organ recipients find affordable housing.Plus, field correspondent Kate Pecora interviews Richard Sperry on his misdiagnosis of ALS and how it led him to patient advocacy. And neurologist Dr. Ray Dorsey outlines action items for helping the Parkinson’s community. Guest:Denise RedekerFounder and CEO, Heartfelt Help FoundationDenise Redeker is a heart transplant recipient, patient advocate, organ donation advocate and founder of Heartfelt Help Foundation. Founded in 2020, Heartfelt Help Foundation helps Bay Area transplant recipients both afford and source the medically required post transplant housing that, for most transplant recipients, necessitates relocating temporarily to within a short distance of their hospital. Such expenses are rarely covered by insurance, often extremely expensive, and sufficiently critical to transplant recovery that an inability to afford them can delay a patient’s life-saving transplant surgery. Hey girl, thank you for being here for this episode. In honor of Donate Life Month, I wanted to share the beautiful stories of donors, donor families, and recipients. In this episode, Becky shares with us the story about her dad and how he became an organ donor. Becky and her family had to make the tough decision, whether to donate her dad's organs or not. They decided that by donating his organs they would be honoring him and doing something that he himself would have done. All his life, he cared about other people but most importantly he was a loving father and husband. He saved 8 lives! Thank you, Becky! Because I know that sharing your dad's story was not easy. Thank you for making the decision to save lives! Please consider registering to be an organ, eye, and tissue donor. Helen explains why she didn’t think twice about donating her kidney and shares how her husband and children supported her throughout the process. Helen encourages us to designate ourselves as donors on our drivers licenses, and to know that if we are O blood type, we can be a “living donor” like Helen. Celebrated in April each year, Donate Life Month features an entire month of local, regional, and national activities to help encourage Americans to register as organ, eye and tissue donors and to celebrate those that have saved lives through the gift of donation. April is Donate Life Month. In this episode Christen, my new cohost, who is a neuro ICU nurse at one of the top hospitals for neurology and neurosurgery joins to chat about Organ donation. When I reached out to my listeners, the main reason that people shared that they were not advocates of organ donation is because their religion did not support organ donation. Christen was quizzed on different religions to find exactly who did not allow organ donation. AME & AME ZION (African Methodist Episcopal) – Allowed Amish- Allowed Assembly of God- Allowed Baptist- Allowed Bretheren- Allowed as long as it does not hasten life or come from an unborn child Buddhism- Allowed Catholicism- Allowed Christian Science- Allowed Episcopal- Allowed Greek Orthodox- Allowed Hinduism- Allowed Independent Conservative Evangelical- Allowed Islam- Allowed Jehovah’s Witnesses- Allowed as long as the blood is completely drained from the organs Judaism- Allowed Lutheran- Allowed Mennonite- Allowed Moravian- Allowed Mormon (Church of Christ of Latter Day Saints)- Allowed Pentecostal- Allowed Presbyterian- Allowed Seventh-Day Adventists- Allowed Shinto- NOT ALLOWED Society of Friends (Quaker)- Allowed Unitarian Universalist- Allowed United Church of Christ- Allowed United Methodist- Allowed There are two types of donors. The first is a live donor. A living person is able to give another an organ- For example: A parent is in need of a kidney transplant. Their child is able to donate one of their kidneys if they are a match. The organ leaves a living person and is transplanted into another living person. Organs that can come from live donors include, Kidney, liver, lung, intestine, blood and bone marrow. The other type of organ is a deceased organ. Once a patient (naturally) dies, organs are taken from them and transplanted into a recipient. Organs that can be taken and used from a deceased donor include heart, liver, kidneys, lungs, pancreas and small intestines. Tissues include corneas, skin, veins, heart valves, tendons, ligaments and bones. Myths: 1. I have a medical condition, so I can’t be a donor. --- Not true. Anyone, regardless of age or medical history can sign up to be a donor. The transplant team will determine at an individual’s time of death whether donation is possible. There are very few conditions that would prevent a person from becoming a donor. You should still consider registering. Even with an illness, you may be able to donate your organs or tissues. 2. I’m too old to be a donor. ---There is no age limit to organ donation. The oldest donor in the US was 93 years old! 3. If they see I’m a donor at the hospital, they won’t try to save my life. ---When you are a patient in the hospital our priority is to save your life. Donation does not become a possibility until life saving measures are likely to not sustain prolongation of life. 4. Rich and famous people on the waiting list get organs faster. --- A national computer system matches donated organs and recipients. These factors include blood type, time spent waiting, other important medical information, how sick the person is, and geographic location. Race, income, and celebrity are NEVER a factor. 5. My Family won't be able to have an open casket at my funeral if I'm a donor. --- An open casket is usually possible 6. My family will have to pay for the donation--- There is no cost to donors or families for donation ....and more! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/jami-fregeau/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jami-fregeau/support
