Miracle of Help is a 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit using a community-led development model to help communities mobilize and design solutions that address their overall social and healthcare needs. Sierra Leone has the second highest infant mortality rate in the world. Inspired by firsthand accounts of the poverty and lack of medical services for pregnant women in eastern Sierra Leone, Miracle of Help (MOH) is helping the community build a Maternal Child Health Post (MCHP), for safe childbirth and pre- and post-natal care. The center is located in the village of Ngolahun, a village of slightly over 2,000 people, with no electricity or running water. Four smaller villages within walking distance (total population 2,000) will also receive services from the MCHP. During our monthly pop-up clinics our doctors have diagnosed some form of malnutrition in 80% of the children they see (see photos). As of the end of May 2022, we established two malnutrition clinics for severe and moderate acute malnutrition for children under the age of five. Our staff was trained by clinicians from Project Peanut Butter & Partners in Health, and both clinics have been certified by the Sierra Leone government. Since the inception of the clinics, twenty-five children have been rescued from malnutrition and their mothers given jobs selling soap to support them. Currently, twenty-seven children are enrolled in the two clinics. The mothers learn how to make Bennimix (provided by MOH), a blend of nutritive food substances to feed their children. Miracle of Help's fundraising efforts to establish a safe birthing center / women's health clinic in Sierra Leone were recognized by Ambassador Dr. Francis Kaikai at the Consulate of Sierra Leone in NY city, December 3, 2018. Ambassador Dr. Francis Kaikai appears in the center of this photo along with the Board of Directors of Miracle of Help.

Today you'll have an opportunity to learn from a cardiologist, pharmacologist, and author, who has brought his expertise into the world of expert witnesses. Dr. Michael Zema shares what he has learned to sharpen his expert witness abilities. Dr. Zema has a routine of breaking up case analysis with research, which not only relieves the tedium of endless pages of documentation but gives him new insights into the case. He describes some of the pitfalls in electronic medical records with a warning that the copy-and-paste function can propagate a medical error for years. As an example, he describes meeting a patient whose chart incorrectly stated that he'd recently had bypass surgery. When Dr. Zema discovered this error, he found that the man's medical records had perpetuated it for two years. Because of the frequency of pharmaceutical errors, Dr. Zema urges expert witnesses to familiarize themselves as much as possible with pharmacology. He describes a case of Stevens-Johnson Syndrome in which an incorrectly prescribed drug played a big role. Of special value to expert witnesses and attorneys is his approach to cross-examination. He always tries to think like the opposing attorney, an approach he also uses in analyzing the medical information. Be prepared for some top-level information and guidance in this podcast. Join me in this episode of Decoding Medical Records - Tips and Techniques for Expert Witnesses - Dr. Michael Zema What's a good way to effectively navigate through volumes of electronic records? Why can copying and pasting electronic records create problems? How does the copy-and-paste repetition of an error in diagnosis inhibit correct perpetuate continued misdiagnosis and incorrect treatment? How does a strong knowledge of pharmacology assist an expert witness? WIHI - A Podcast from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement
Date: October 5, 2011 Featuring: Arthur Kleinman, MD, Esther and Sidney Rabb Professor of Anthropology, Professor of Medical Anthropology, Professor of Psychiatry, William Fung Director: Harvard University, Harvard Medical School, Harvard University Asia Center Jeremy Boal, MD, Chief Medical Officer, North Shore–LIJ Health System; Professor of Medicine, Hofstra North Shore–LIJ School of Medicine Dana R. Lustbader MD, FCCM, FCCP, FAAHPM, Section Head, Palliative Medicine, North Shore–Long Island Jewish Medical Center; Program Director, Palliative Medicine Fellowship, North Shore–LIJ; founding Director, Palliative Care Unit, North Shore University Hospital; Assistant Medical Director, New York Organ Donor Network Andrea Kabcenell, RN, MPH, Vice President, Institute for Healthcare Improvement When we talk about caring for loved ones with serious illness, we usually focus on the problems and challenges most of all. And that makes sense. There is nothing easy or simple about family caregiving, and when it’s required of spouses and grown children the burdens can be especially high. Still, when you hear Arthur Kleinman describe what it was like to take care of his wife before she died, the words that jump out are honor, respect, and love ― even in the midst of grief, fatigue, and loneliness.Kleinman, a psychiatrist and medical anthropologist, discovered that caregiving could be transformative, especially the further away he got from the fast-paced, high-tech world of cure and intervention that characterize so much of health care today. But there doesn’t have to be such a divide ― not if health care providers can become more comfortable talking with patients and families about serious illness, more familiar with the benefits of palliative and end-of-life care, and more capable of appreciating the power of compassion. This WIHI discusses the very human “call to action” that family caregiving poses for all of health care today. WIHI host Madge Kaplan talks with Arthur Kleinman, two physicians from North Shore-Long Island Jewish (NSLIJ) Health System ― Chief Medical Officer Jeremy Boal and Intensivist and Palliative Care program director Dana Lustbader ― and IHI Vice President Andrea Kabcenell. In partnership with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, NSLIJ is on the cusp of bringing a great deal more expertise and knowledge to bear on how their 15 hospitals, long-term care facilities, and home health agencies can better respond to and support patients and families facing serious illness. This is a perfect moment and opportunity to engage with this team in shared learning. As Arthur Kleinman told The New York Times: “There is a moral task of caregiving, and that involves just being there, being with that person and being committed. When there is nothing that can be done, we have to be able to say, ‘Look, I’m with you in this experience. Right through to the end of it.’ ”
