Show notes: In this 69th episode, I took a trip up the street to the new Bricks & Minifigs shop in my neck of the woods- Hernando, MS. Long time Mid-South Cartoonists Association member Dr. Kevin Thorn and his wife Tammy Blackman Thorn are the owners of not only a new franchised LEGO themed shop, but what looks to be one of the coolest shops in the mid-south area! I talked to the couple about the genesis of going into business with each other on this new Bricks & Minifigs franchise opportunity in their home town, their plans for the future of the local shop (parties, workshops, art gallery, and more!), and their love of LEGO. The Bricks & Minifigs Hernando shop will be officially opening in January 2025 (hopefully Jan. 11th), but fingers crossed they plan a soft opening on Black Friday- or as they call it, "Block Friday" and the Christmas shopping season. They were doing a "Buy Day" buying event when I stopped by to visit, and many folks were stopping buy to trade in their LEGO sets and loose bricks for cash. One cool thing about the used bricks is that the Hernando Bricks & Minifigs shop will not only be washing all the bricks they take in, they will also regularly be disinfecting all the ones in their loose bins, too! You will be able to buy new and used LEGO sets, mini-figs, and loose bricks to create your own plastic creations. This brand new Bricks & Minifigs store is located at 210 E. Commerce Street, Suite #7 in Hernando, MS. From Memphis head south on I-55 to exit 280 (Hernando/Commerce Street), turn right on Commerce Street, stay in the left lane, go past the McDonalds, and turn right after the R/R tracks. The shop is in the shopping center next to Bazar's Bakery & Restaurant, and just up the street from the DeSoto County Museum and Area 51 Ice Cream. Oh, and there's a new mural inside the shop by MSCA member Greg Cravens! I also share some info on MSCA and other local events such as our recent "The Funny Pages" art show reception at Germantown Community Theatre over the weekend, and our upcoming MSCA monthly dinner meet-up and holiday art swap at Garibaldi's Pizza on December 3rd, from 6-8pm. She then connected with producer Wiz, who brought her to Miami to write hooks and songs with artists like Lil Wayne, Rocko, and Young Joc visiting the studio. While in Miami, Jozzy also began working with producer Polow da Don, landing placements like Fergie's “Milf Money.” She later collaborated with Chris Brown, co-writing the song “Discover” on his album Royalty. The company had no moat and couldn't stand the competition. Peter's reputation was severely affected after the stock price fell significantly.LEARNING: Don't fall in love with a stock. Diversification is key. “If you meet a money manager and they tell you they've never had any big losers, just run because losses are part of the game.”Peter Ricchiuti Guest profilePeter Ricchiuti is a graduate of Babson College and began his career with the investment firm Kidder Peabody in Boston. He later managed Louisiana's $3 billion investment portfolio while serving as the assistant state treasurer. From Memphis to Mars (PA), Peter has addressed more than 1,200 groups in 47 states and several countries. He has been featured in BARRON'S, Kiplinger's, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. He also hosts a popular weekly business show on National Public Radio in New Orleans called “Out To Lunch.”Worst investment everPeter got interested in a new company making soft soap that would replace the bar soap, which it did. The stock was trading at around $19 a share, and Peter just fell in love with it. He got many blatant signals that this would not work, but he ignored them.At first, the stock performed very well. However, the company had no moat. So the stock started falling. It got to $9, and Peter was beside himself because he had the stock in many client accounts as a speculative stock. The stock price just kept falling. As a broker, Peter's biggest loss was not the money but the fact that his entire clientele and institutional salespeople wouldn't believe him anymore.Lessons learnedDiversification is crucial.Don't fall in love with a stock.Andrew's takeawaysJust because a company or a CEO has an idea and is implementing it well doesn't mean they can hold on to it.Actionable adviceThink of all the downsides before you take a position.Peter's recommendationsPeter recommends reading How to Invest: Masters on the Craft to learn more about investing.No.1 goal for the next 12 monthsPeter's number one goal for the next 12 months is to dig deeper into a few stocks he liked a couple of years ago and are now selling for much lower prices. Next, when did we start giving killers and sociopaths all the glory? Shouldn't crime investigators get top billing? When did TV shows switch from “Touched by an Angel” to “Touched by an Uncle”? We have truckloads of erectile dysfunction pills and Matthew McConaughey luxury cars for sale! Come on, Hulu, enough with the ads! We're already paying for a subscription. Next, when did we start giving killers and sociopaths all the glory? Shouldn't crime investigators get top billing? When did TV shows switch from “Touched by an Angel” to “Touched by an Uncle”? Co-host Garrett is pissed off at pissing contests. Speaking of pissed: Carla from Burnt Corn, Alabama, can't take it no more. When you're in public, get control of your wilding children! Or Carla's going to turn them into chili dogs at the local DQ Brazier. As for crying children on airplanes: what do you think cargo is for? (Go to 0:55 to skip the intro) Cities Aviv is an artist that I was introduced to through my exploration into Memphis rapper Lukah's music this year, who's amazing recent record I reviewed, and who I interviewed last month. And just like Lukah, Cities is one of the best musical discoveries I've had in a long time. From Memphis as well, Cities has been making cutting-edge hip-hop music for the past decade. This album is like a bowl of lucky charms, with every single bite being that perfect mix of cereal and marshmallow charms... notice how I didn't say the album was consistent bites of JUST the marshmallow charms. That's because the album has a perfect balance to it, walking the tightrope between a lot of variety of moods and textures. Never too sweet, too cold, or too abrasive. This album is so VIBRANT, exuding colour and life, just as the beautiful album artwork would suggest. These beats truly have a life of its own. Cities' rapping adds a great dimension of engagement to his music that really puts this album over the top. I always appreciated his lyricism, but the flows and the larger focus put on his lyrics on this album, in comparison with some of his recent work.... was an absolute highlight. It's not like lyrically Cities is “good for a producer rapper”... he's legit good. His lyrics are often strikingly emotional and introspective, seeing Cities pour out his innermost thoughts and demons. His vocals are not only sharp, but they tend to fit so snugly within these instrumental tapestries that he's built. Forty years after the death of Elvis Presley, two-time Sundance Grand Jury winner Eugene Jarecki’s new film takes the King’s 1963 Rolls-Royce on a musical road trip across America. From Memphis to New York, Las Vegas, and beyond, the journey traces the rise and fall of Elvis as a metaphor for the country he left behind. In this groundbreaking film, Jarecki paints a visionary portrait of the state of the American dream and a penetrating look at how the hell we got here. A diverse cast of Americans, both famous and not, join the journey, including Alec Baldwin, Rosanne Cash, Chuck D, Emmylou Harris, Ethan Hawke, Van Jones, Mike Myers, and Dan Rather, among many others. To investigate these questions, THE KING traces Elvis’ rise and fall from the Deep South to New York, Las Vegas, and countless points between. Alongside this, the film examines America in parallel, from her auspicious founding to her own struggles with excess power up to the acute challenges of today. This was always Jarecki’s intent, but he could never have anticipated the election of Donald Trump, which happened in mid-production and sent a shock wave through the filmmaking process.
