Show notes: For this 70th episode, I took a quick trip up to Memphis to attend the Memphis Comic and Fantasy Convention at the Holiday Inn on the U of M campus. This year is the 14th anniversary for the local con. it was started by Joe Thordarson, Brandon Olmstead, and Allan Gilbreath - who also do the radio shows "Geek Tank Radio" and "Tool Talk Radio"on 98.9 The Roar. I ran into several local comic creators, some like Greg Cravens (Con Cards) and A.G. Howard (Howard Art Studios) I've known for about 4o years now! They were the two artists who mentored me when I first started airbrushing back in my late teens. Some other familiar faces (and voices) at the MCFC were Matt Bowers, Allan Gilbreath, Shawn Howe, Devin Hodges, John Martin, and Chris "The Jowers" Jowers. I also beamed aboard Station Shelby to talk with James Wheatly about the local Star Trek fan club in town. There were lots of vendors, artists, and even some LEGO to play with in the dealer's room, plus around the con there was a game room, panel room, and an autograph section. I had a great time talking toons with everyone at the con on Sunday. It's kinda crazy how many cons and art events there are in town these days! Speaking of events, I also share some info on our upcoming MSCA monthly dinner meet-up and holiday art swap at Garibaldi's Pizza on December 3rd, from 6-8pm, the Midsouth Toy Fest, and other MSCA member and industry news, including former Memphians Mike Norton and John Jackson Miller. This week Laura is excited to present Dr. Matt Bowers, an associate professor and the director of the Sport Management Program at the University of Texas at Austin. As an expert in athlete development and sports management, Matt is here to unravel the complexities surrounding the Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) regulations that have recently reshaped college athletics. Throughout the episode, Dr. Bowers unpacks the history and development of NIL regulations, illustrating how they have evolved from initial concepts to the powerful influence they now exert in college athletics. He explores the various advantages NIL offers athletes, such as new avenues for personal branding and financial opportunities. But the discussion isn't limited to the benefits; Dr. Bowers also delves into the challenges and complexities accompanying these regulations. The conversation sheds light on how NIL has transformed the way college athletes engage with and profit from their sports careers. Additionally, the episode delves into the intricate relationship between NIL regulations and the overall infrastructure of college sports. Dr. Bowers discusses how these regulations have prompted a reevaluation of traditional collegiate sports models and spurred inclusivity, opening doors for diverse revenue streams. However, he also highlights the challenges in valuing athlete contributions and the urgent need for consistent, national-level guidelines to ensure fair practices across all college sports Whether you're a current or future college athlete, parent, coach, or just a sports enthusiast, this episode offers a critical perspective on navigating the new landscape of college sports thriving within the NIL era. Episode Highlights: Breakdown of NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) and its origins in summer 2021. The fluctuating dynamics between NIL deals and their influence on college selection. Trends in NIL partnerships, with an emphasis on social media leverage. NIL's indirect and direct benefits for colleges and universities. Collective's role in fundraising and balancing resources for athletic departments. Potential changes in athlete retention and graduation rates with NIL. Comparing NIL environments between different division levels in the NCAA. Aspects concerning athletes transitioning from college to professional sports. Ensuring alignment of NIL opportunities with personal values and genuine interests. Quotes: "Sports are this incredibly powerful context, not inherently good or bad, but one of the most powerful contexts for human development." "I think long-term happiness and fulfillment and wellbeing come from really having a clear sense of who you are, and then how you pursue that." "There are a number of lawsuits in process right now that I could see fundamentally altering the relationship between student athletes and universities here in the not too distant future." “I recognize this could be transformative for some families… for their kid to be able to pursue an NIL deal in high school that could change the trajectory of an entire family.” “We've jumped the shark in terms of what we require of an athlete to even be able to put themselves in a position to get to a school like Texas. And so now we're layering on, on top of that.” Links: The Pursuit of Gold Website Top 10 Mental Skills Guide Episode 76: Developing a Competitive Mindset with Sports Psychiatrist Dr. T Episode 83: Growing into a Leader with Swimming Olympic Medalist Elizabeth Beisel Episode 89: Fall in Love with Failing with 3x World Champ Softball Player Haylie McCleney Episode 91: Think Big, Act Small with 2x Olympic Medalist Skier Shannon Bahrke Episode 95: Courage is a Learned Skill with High Diver David Colturi Laura's Social Media: Laura's Instagram Laura's Facebook Connect with Matt: Matt's LinkedIn Matt's Website

As far back as Sam Stafford can remember Planning Performance Agreements (PPAs) have been the answer to questions about both how to get more resources into LPAs and how to improve application timescales. As Sam says in introducing this episode, he has been working for over twenty years, those questions remain unanswered, and PPAs remain a code yet to be cracked. Why, for example, according to Planning Magazine, were PPAs used for 30.3% of decisions in Solihull last year, but only in 1.3% of decisions in South Cambridgeshire? Why also, for example, do some authorities charge nothing for pre-application advice for residential developments of over 250 homes, some authorities charge thousands of pounds, and some authorities charge tens of thousands of pounds? The Planning Advisory Service (PAS) has sought to crack the code. It has worked with the University of Gloucestershire, Hyas Associates and the Countryside and Community Research Institute to deliver a DLUHC-funded programme on best practice in pre-application advice and PPAs. Sam mentioned this research in Episode 109 because of Jeremy Hunt's reference in the Autumn Statement to a new “premium” planning service that will be introduced next year to include a guarantee of accelerated decision dates. Details are awaited, but Planning Magazine reports that, according to insiders, this new “premium” service is likely to involve a more formal version of PPAs. No better time then for Sam to share a conversation about the PAS research and best practice that he recorded online back in July of this year with friend of podcast Shelly Rouse, Matt Bowers and Max Whitehead. Shelly is a principal consultant at PAS, Matt is an Associate Director at Hyas Associates and Max is a Planning Director at Bloor Homes. They talk about the high hopes that applicants always have for pre-app, but why some LPAs see it as a ‘nice to have' rather than a ‘have to do'; they talk about the utopian vision of having all statutory consultees around a development team table at the same time; and they talk about the barriers to doing pre-app and PPAs well and the keys to success. Sam would like to extend a particular vote of thanks to editing wizard Ashley Bellinger for skilfully dealing with some gremlins in Shelly's original recording. Some accompanying reading. What is a passive house? Is it economically feasible? Today we ask those questions of Matt Bowers of Rochester Passive House Consulting, a New York State Energy Research and Development Authority(NYSERDA) certified Passive House consultant. He gives us lucid and in-depth insights into how to build a passive house or at least an aspirational passive house. He recommends to start with a very tight envelope around the house. This not only reduces energy consumption but it increases durability. Along with this tightly sealed home, it is important to have ventilation to prevent moisture buildup and mold. Passive house principles focus on overall comfort level of a building - home, office or retail space. One of the passive house principles is that there shouldn't be more than 6 degrees fahrenheit difference between different surfaces. Not only should the temperature be comfortable, it also aspires to have a very quiet home and good indoor air quality. This seemingly complex subject is simplified by Matt in this episode of Mindful Businesses. Take a listen. #passivehouse, #mindfubusinesseses #oursustainablehome #ventilators #solarpanels #energyefficiency

This week on The Farm Report, host Erin Fairbanks is joined by Ronny and Beth Drennan of Broadbent Country Hams. The Broadbent family started curing hams and bacon commercially in Cadiz, Kentucky, in 1920. In 1999 the Broadbent family sold the business to Ronny and Beth Drennan. The Drennans, who were in the furniture business, had always heard of Broadbent Hams and saw an opportunity. It took some time to learn the ins and outs of the curing business, but Smith Broadbent has been there to help. Today, Ronny and Beth carry on the Broadbent tradition of quality, and they have won enough awards to live up to the founder’s name. After the break, this week’s EscapeMaker segment features Matt Bowers of Four Fights Distilling in Corning, NY. On a scale of 1 to 4, how many fights were you going to get into after drinking a pint of moonshine? Bottom of the barrel rated 1, while the cleanest and strongest shines were rated at 4. So in keeping with tradition, while representing dedication to quality, the name Four Fights Distilling was chosen. If you’d like to visit any of the craft brewers or cider makers interviewed in The Farm Report, checkout EscapeMaker.com to book a 1 or 2-night all-inclusive craft beverage package with tours tastings and lodging.
