Today, Salt Lake City's urban sprawl and poor air quality are noteworthy, but the problem isn't exactly new. Public parks were once seen as an antidote to the bad effects of increasing urbanization -- kind of like a little bit of the "country" in the city, if you will.

Hi all. It is Beth here. I have Scleroderma, a rare autoimmune disease. I was diagnosed just 8 months ago in September 2023 after 3-5 years of trying to figure out all of my vague symptoms. I am the Master of Ceremonies for this event and I am inviting you to join me for the National Scleroderma 5k walk/run: "Stepping Out to Cure Scleroderma". It is on Saturday, June 8th, 2024 from 8-11 am at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City, Utah. I am using my voice as both a doctor and a patient to raise awareness of a bigger issue:Scleroderma is a rare autoimmune disease, but autoimmune diseases are COMMON. They are underrecognized. They difficult to diagnose and treat. Early recognition is key to preventing disability and unnecessary suffering. There are over 100 autoimmune diseases. Some autoimmune diseases are rare but there are a LOT of very common ones like Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Lupus. Even diseases that are not “known as” autoimmune disorders are autoimmune in nature —Type 1 diabetes, Celiac disease, Guillain Barre syndrome, Inflammatory bowel disease, Hashimoto's thyroiditis (the most COMMON cause of hypothyroidism). Taken altogether, 1 in 15 people has an autoimmune disease. Alone we are rare. Together, we are everywhere. Walks like this are meant to help people feel less alone by being surrounded by others who are like them. On June 8th, we walk to raise awareness and support for Scleroderma. AND every day, we can share our stories and support one another as an autoimmune community that includes over 50 million people in the United States. Please come walk/run with us if you or someone you know lives with an autoimmune disease. To register for the walk:1. Go to https://scleroderma.org/steppingout/2. Under “Upcoming 2024 Stepping out to Cure Scleroderma Walks”, select the “Rocky Mountain Chapter” 3. Click on Salt Lake City, June 8th, 20244. Please join MY TEAM! Click on “Join a team” and enter my team name: “Phoenix Rising”. Why? A phoenix is a mythical bird that lives for 500 years. When it comes time to die, the phoenix bursts into flames and then rises from its own flames to be reborn. Autoimmune diseases are disorders of inflammation – fire in your body. That fire can consume you or you can be reborn from it. Please share!

Welcome to the latest episode of "This Week in Barbecue," your go-to source for everything sizzling in the world of BBQ. In this episode, we're excited to announce that Fox Bros is now taking holiday catering orders, perfect for adding a smoky touch to your festive feasts. Tragedy has struck the BBQ community, with Helberg Barbecue in Woodway, Texas, losing their pitroom to a fire, and Matt Horn's Horn Barbecue in Oakland suffering a similar fate. We share how you can help these beloved establishments rebuild through their GoFundMe campaigns. On a more uplifting note, Rodney Scott's BBQ is set for significant expansion, including a 2024 Nashville location in collaboration with Eric Church, and upcoming spots in Miami, FL, and Hoover, AL. Angie Harris, head Pitmaster at Rodney Scott's Atlanta, is someone to watch in this growing empire. The episode also dives into the competitive spirit of BBQ with the Memphis in May Team Application Guide, preparing you for the event from May 15-18, 2024, at Liberty Park in Memphis, TN. We celebrate the success of Eddie Wright BBQ, which has received its second DoorDash grant in partnership with the NAACP. The episode stirs up some debate with 1ChefOnAMission's question about menu misinterpretation – is it on the customer or the owner? Gordon Ramsey gives us the raw truth about what it takes to start a restaurant, and it might not be what you're expecting. Don't miss Pitmaster Santa at Reformation Brewery in Smyrna on December 10th, and join us as we discuss a controversial cooking method – microwaving steaks. Tune in to this packed episode for a deep dive into the heart of BBQ culture, challenges, and celebrations.

I've always lived in Clarksville. Like anyone else, I've moved around a few times. Still, I decided long ago that this city will always be my home, whether I reside on Memorial Drive, Bentree Court, or several other locations. It's a good town to grow up in, and I'm happy my kids made the same choice. During my walk at Liberty Park, I could not help but reflect on something that happened long ago; it sometimes feels like a bad dream when I think about it. In 2001 I was a young parent, married with two young children. We were always on the move. If you have kids, you know what I'm referring to on any day of the week. Children grow up quickly, so we desperately try to squeeze everything in that we can. Slowing down never seems like an option, but it's what we all secretly want to do. Just one afternoon with the family and no plans would be sublime. Instead, we were off to the fairgrounds for another soccer practice. I parked and watched as the kids finished their juice boxes and string cheese. Christian, my son, had to tie his shoes, and Ashlee, my daughter, looked like she had brushed her hair with a ceiling fan. It's the sort of stuff that happens when the dad is off and Moms caught up at work. My kids unbuckled in a flash and headed toward the coach, leaving two empty drink boxes behind in the back seat. I remember staring at the containers thinking how those juices meant everything to my kids, but once they finished them, they moved on, and the treats were forgotten. The young athletes ran around and kicked the ball while all parents watched silently. We were chatterboxes most of the time, but something was different about this day. Not a single grown-up was on that field in spirit. All of our minds were in another place. Flashes of the world and how our babies would one day grow up to take on the leftover madness crept around our brains. Clarksville felt safe not long ago, but today there isn't a city in the entire country unaffected by despair. The goal is to leave a better community behind, a better world. We've failed. Above was a spectacular cobalt Tennessee sky showing off its magnificence above Montgomery County. A few splashes of white reflected the warm glow of the setting sun. Then we saw it—something we hadn't seen in days since the tragedy. An airplane made its way overhead. Everyone stopped as if time had taken a break except for the object floating through the atmosphere. We watched until it was nothing more than a tiny speck evaporating in space. The slowdown was all we needed, and smiles emerged for the first time since practice began. It was a sense of relief seeing that captivating airplane gliding across the sky and leaving behind some hope; hope that things would be okay, hope that our children may have a chance in the world even after September 11th.

Riding Shotgun With Charlie#100Alan GottliebSecond Amendment Foundation Alan Gottlieb is The MAN! At my first Gun Rights Policy Conference (GRPC) in Tampa 2016, I approached Massad Ayoob to have him sign my copy of In The Gravest Extreme. I took a deep breath, asked Mas if he could come Riding Shotgun. Alan was right behind Mas. He said “Oh my gosh, Mas you’ve got to go Riding Shotgun With Charlie!” It was 2 years before we made it happen. In Phoenix 2019 at GRPC, I was hanging out with a few people at the social hour and Alan came up to our group and congratulated me on the Blogger of the Year. And he asked when HE was going to come Riding Shotgun. We made it happen in Bellevue, WA, at the Second Amendment Foundation headquarters last month. He may have let me conduct the interview in his car, his 7th Corvette! Alan grew up in New York City then joined the Army. Earning a degree in nuclear engineering from the University of Tennessee, he became interested in fighting for individual rights, and the 2A which is most under attack. He got involved with the Young Americans for Freedom and was sent to Seattle to cover a 13 state region for the Student Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms. In 1972, way before the NRA-ILA, he had the idea to change it to the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRBKA). Within 2 years ,the CCRBKA was bigger than its predecessor, and then he started the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF). The CCRBKA donations are not tax deductible as they’re involved with lobbying, but the SAF is non-partisan and donations are deductible. Both offices of the SAF & CCRBKA are located at Liberty Park in Bellevue. We talk about how things have been changing and the SAF is reaching out to the new gun owners with TV ads. Alan shares how he’s able to get commercials for SAF on some of the networks that are against the 2A. It’s very important to get the new gun owners involved and learning how the anti-gun crowd is going after our Rights and our firearms. Brad Parscale, who worked for the Trump campaign, is now working for SAF and helping the foundation grow. We also cover how just being public and open about firearms makes us a target for the anti-gun folks. Alan shares some stories about threats he’s gotten and how he passes them on to the local authorities. Some of the threats are ‘downright scary’. He isn’t the only one who gets these threats either. We also cover that often the people fighting for our rights don’t get enough time to get out and do some shooting on our own. One of Alan’s favorite shotguns was a shotgun owned by Neal Knox. His favorite type of shooting is trap and skeet, which he would love to do more often but he’s very busy fighting for our rights to shoot. He’s traveling all over the United States and the world talking about gun rights. He said that when people in other countries talk about gun rights, they call it “Second Amendment” rights, which is a wonderful hat tip to our Constitution and Founding Fathers. What I really got from my time with Alan is that the shoes he wears in the 2A community are HUGE! When he does finally decide to retire, we are going to need about 4 or 5 people just to keep up with everything Alan does. Favorite quotes: “Donations can be tax deductible and you can write part of this off on your taxes and make the government pay part of the freight, since they were attacking our rights to begin with.” “We buy those spots (remnant time) so we’re not feeding the enemy.” “Our outreach is tripled already this year.” “The more public you are in the media with this, the more you get picked on. The more threats you get.” “In Europe, they always refer to gun rights as “‘Second Amendment’.'' “Internationally, gun rights shouldn’t stop at any country’s border. Gun rights are a human right.” Second Amendment Foundation http://saf.org/ Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms https://www.ccrkba.org/ Special THANKS to Derek LeBlanc of Kids S.A.F.E. Richard Reynolds – Rat Hunter of ManhattanRichard Reynolds joins me for part two of our conversation. This time we’re talking rat hunting with Terriers in New York City. [caption id="attachment_8391" align="alignleft" width="224"] Richard Reynolds with a Jagd Terrier, shown in FSS at Open Shows.[/caption] “Quite fairly there was never a transition (from hounds to terriers),” Reynolds said. “I was always interested in hunting the terriers. We don't have as many Fox in the United States as they do in England … and you had to work a little harder. Bringing up the terriers and putting the terriers to ground was always a part of our Fox hunt. “When I left the pack, I wanted a purebred terrier that I could show. Somebody slipped me into a low mileage used Norfolk terrier and that suited me pretty good. But I didn't know whether it could hunt or not. A few years later and a little experience and a few Norfolks later, we proved they were damn good hunters. In fact, the best terrier that I've ever had to this day remains one particular Norfolk.” Reynolds’ rise to fame as the Rat Hunter of Manhattan started at a dog show in Liberty Park at the base of the Statue of Liberty. Rats had overrun one of the handlers’ setups and he turned his Norfolk loose to do its job. The park superintendent happened to see this feat. The rest, as they say, is history. [caption id="attachment_8390" align="alignright" width="240"] Jagd Terrier with Reynolds and one less rat on the streets of Manhattan.[/caption] “If I tell you that my dog is a good rat catcher, you won't care,” Reynolds opined. “If a rat is headed to run up your pant leg and my dog stops it, you'll have a lot of respect for that fuzzy little critter down there. So that's exactly the way we're trying to make our point. “We’re all about an idea. That idea is preserving breed type through maintaining the actual function of the dog. You can simulate all these things but you can't replicate the actual deed of hunting or ratting or whatever. It's different. It's about the dogs but don't tell anybody because we get an awful lot of good press on the fact that we're killing rats. “We can't show purebred dogs to the media. They don't care. Dead rats are a big seller. We have media with us (nearly) every night that we go out. We've had a lot of media. But that's our little way of selling purebred dogs to the public. “We're doing it for the sake of the dogs. There's no money here. All sport is ruined as soon as you monetize it. So we don't charge to hunt. Our members occasionally cough up $5 each time they hunt, but more often than not they forget to pay it and we forget to collect it. So it's kind of a thing for the dogs, by the dogs and of the dogs. A good night is when the dogs work well together. A bad night is when we don't get anything.” Reynolds has been instrumental in setting up a training ground in southern New Jersey. The primary purpose of which is running AKC earthdog tests. “We use it as a basic training ground for terriers and dachshunds,” Reynolds noted. “It's not the same thing (as street hunting). Once they get through the earth dog program there's a lot of on the job training but it's a starting point. The sport of AKC earthdog or den trials or Jack Russell terrier Association go to ground is kind of diminished in recent years. We use it for training Street dogs but really what we're trying to do is rejuvenate this sport in and of itself of earth dogs and den trials.” Support this podcast

We're not too far away from the fourth of July, but if you're a regular to Salt Lake City's fireworks show on the fourth you're going to be disappointed. Mayor Erin Mendenhall announced that the usual Jordan Park and Liberty Park shows are canceled due to an "upswing in COVID-19 cases." But that wasn't your only hope. There will be several synchronized shows in Utah County with bigger and better fireworks--that allow for social distancing.

There's something about Southern cooking that evokes the memories of warm feelings, lazy afternoons, and cool summer nights. Southern cuisine is all about sharing and comfort, and the focus on family is dominant. While Utah doesn't necessarily have the same kind of charm as the South, we definitely have the same love for family and large, traditional meals. For Amy Britt, the desire to bring her childhood experience to Utah complimented our community perfectly. This week we sit down with Amy Britt, the owner of Pig & a Jelly Jar. Known for its homemade, local, from scratch food, Pig & a Jelly Jar encompasses all of the delicious flavors and feel of the South, with a very local Utah feel and connection. Whether partnering with local produce vendors or having a restaurant in a historic district in Ogden, Pig & a Jelly Jar have deep roots in the Utah food scene.Founded in 2012, Pig & a Jelly Jar nestled into the revamped Liberty Park neighborhood and became a breakfast and lunch hot spot. With chicken and waffles, from scratch burgers, and creative PBR cocktails, the menu was perfectly paired with an intimate and fun space and top-notch service, the Southern love spread throughout Salt Lake City.Like many entrepreneurs, for Amy Britt expansion came unexpectedly after she stumbled upon a beautiful location in Ogden. Dusty Hulet may not have been born in a tent—perhaps to his father’s chagrin—but he did grow up never missing a Boy Scout camp-out. Being raised in an active outdoor family laid a foundation for adventure in him that continues to grow. He makes a living as an entrepreneur and filmmaker, occasionally crawling through bear dens, and pursues a variety of activities on the side. He can be found in the snow or in raging rivers, perhaps even on horseback. He was once responsible for the lives and good times of many vacationers seated on his Alaskan tour bus and is to blame for the temporary sitings of the elusive Yellowstone Gorilla.
