Local newspapers are disappearing left and right. Even when they still exist, they're increasingly owned by private equity firms or subject to corporate consolidation, making them local in name only. This is a problem. It's a problem for democracy. Research has found that after private equity takes over local papers, voter turnout drops. People are more likely to vote straight ticket for the party they like, instead of voting based on local issues. Political polarization goes up. There's more corruption in government and business. And people trust the media less overall. (See Paper Cuts to learn more.)But it's not all doom and gloom. Martinsville, Indiana, population 11 thousand, has a new paper in town. It's a print newspaper. The Morgan County Correspondent. It started in August 2023. And it's doing pretty darn well. Stephen Crane is the founding editor. And publisher. And reporter. I went up to the Correspondent's offices a couple weeks ago to talk with him. He told me what happened to the newspapers in Morgan County, where Martinsville is the county seat. Martinsville had a newspaper, and so did Mooresville, in the north of the county. They still do. In theory at least. Today's headline in The Reporter-Times, which was Martinsville's city paper, is about the Princess Theatre building's new owner. The Princess Theatre is in Bloomington. Looks like most of the other articles are also about Bloomington. Stephen and I also talked about how he got into journalism – he says he had some authority issues when he was younger, and his decision to start a paper two years ago is not unconnected. We talked about the differences between locally-owned papers and corporate-owned, the experience of reading a print paper vs online, and why he doesn't care too much about attracting readers under 40.

At the same time the City of Martinsville has struggled to change its national reputation as a racist former Sundown Town. For 33-years Carol's case went unsolved until a series of reports by Investigative Reporter, Sandra Chapman prompted a woman to come forward with a stunning secret. She told Chapman: "If the girl had a yellow scarf and was killed with a screwdriver my father could be the killer." It was a story she also relayed to police. But the arrest of Kenneth Richmond, failed to bring full justice to Carol's family or to remove the stain on Martinsville. Then in 2017, in the wake of a nation's unrest, both the rural communities where Carol lived and died faced a reckoning with race relations. The outcome now: an emerging legacy of hope for Carol Jenkins. This compelling, historical account builds on Chapman's years of investigative work, and the recollections and of exclusive key witnesses all as the U.S. Department of Justice tries once more to bring complete justice to Carol's case."    See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Based on detailed guest surveys and market research, the company has developed a new concept for its cruises to meet the changing needs of its guests.More than 200 improvements – large and small – will ensure that A-ROSA, currently a premium operator, becomes a ‘PremiumPLUS' operator from the 2023 season onwards. Taking into account the entire customer journey – before, during and after travel – the company will focus on making its cruises more customizable, as well as providing even better service, improving its culinary offering, becoming more family-friendly and developing its well-being portfolio. A-ROSA also plans to place greater importance on sustainability and on offering authentic experiences at its destinations.Authentic, personalised experiences in the cruise regionsAnother new area of focus for A-ROSA's city breaks by ship is helping guests experience the different destinations in an authentic way. They'll have the opportunity to get to know chefs, artists and local people from the various regions. A-ROSA will also introduce Destination Scouts. This innovative idea involves locals advising guests visiting their hometown on how to get the most out of their trip. “We'll be looking for people from the cities we call at who can give our guests insider tips about the best places to eat or shop and the best current exhibitions, concerts and events,” explained Eichler. “This will give our guests a really in-depth experience of the region and provide insight into local life beyond the tourist areas.”When it comes to excursions, there will also be a focus on personalised experiences. With 500 different excursions available, there will be something for everyone. Guests who book excursions in the new ‘exclusive tours' category will enjoy individual tours with a vehicle and driver plus their own tour guide. One particular highlight is the half-day excursion with dinner, which will be included in the cruise price from 2023 and guarantees guests an unforgettable evening.More entertainment and relaxationA-ROSA's onboard entertainment programme is set to provide even more value from 2023. Cruises with a duration of five nights or more will include an evening concert, while cruises lasting seven nights or more will feature two. Cruises of nine nights or longer will also have a subject-matter expert on board to give lectures about the destinations. The musical artists will either come from or be influenced by the cruise regions. Through their music – whether traditional songs or global hits – they'll convey the artistic flair of their homeland to the guests.A-ROSA is also responding to its guests' desire for more relaxation and well-being by widening the range of activities available. The SPA-ROSA will provide new treatments and massages, while yoga and fitness classes will be added to the onboard programme. As well as going on guided bike tours, guests will also be able to borrow e-bikes and explore destinations on their own. What's more, as the industry's only provider of family cruises, A-ROSA will also be extending its offering for children. “As well as running dedicated family cruises during the school holidays, we'll provide a Kids Club with organised activities on almost all our ships if there are more than ten children on board,” explained Eichler.Focusing on sustainability“When we were working on our realignment plan, it quickly became clear that sustainability would play a central role,” said Eichler. “A-ROSA has always been involved in environmental and social actions, but taking responsibility will be a special area of focus for us in the future.” With this in mind, A-ROSA opened its own sustainability department on 1 February 2022. Department head Sandra Wendland introduced herself at the press conference. “We've brought a high-level partner on board – the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research – and we'll be working together to develop an integrated, long-term sustainability strategy for A-ROSA,” explained Wendland. The plan for the next twelve months is to determine A-ROSA's current sustainability footprint and, on the basis of field analyses and stakeholder surveys, create a clear roadmap to 2030, which will set out indicators, actions to take and targets. “We'll be presenting the entire development and implementation process in a transparent way, and the roadmap will be unveiled at the start of the 2023 season,” concluded Wendland.Viking Mississippi Floats Viking® celebrated the new 386-guest Viking Mississippi® was “floated out” in Louisiana, marking a major construction milestone and the first time the ship has touched water. Never mind that he's done videos about historic sites in nine other states. Home turf for the creator of the multimedia project History in Your Own Backyard is Indiana. With a motto that advises motorists to "travel slowly and stop often," Satolli Glassmeyer has ventured from his home in the small Indiana town of Sunman in Ripley County to make short documentary videos about historic locales across the state. His subjects range from so-called "phantom" bridges and towns so small they don't have a single stoplight to a former movie theater that now houses the city hall in Rushville and a YMCA built in Greensburg in 1915 that's been renovated into senior apartments. And then there's Howe Military Academy, the prep boarding school that opened in the 1890s in LaGrange County and closed in 2019. They are among the sites that Satolli will discuss when he joins Nelson to explore destinations featured on History in Your Own Backyard, a project that includes a YouTube channel, a newsletter and an extensive website.  He's particularly intrigued by phantom bridges, which, Satolli explains, are located on "ghost roads," i.e. county roads that have been closed or are no longer maintained. Many now are on private property. During our show, Satolli will share insights about phantom bridges in Indiana that are particularly noteworthy, including the Triple Whipple Bridge near Aurora, nicknamed "the Queen Mary of all bridges." Built in 1878, the Triple Whipple spans a creek in Dearborn County and is the only bridge with its distinctive design that is still standing in the country. With Satolli as our guide, we also will explore the phantom bridges at the Jefferson Proving Ground, the munitions testing facility near Madison that was established in a wooded area during the World War II era. At the proving ground, which was closed in 1995, Satolli was escorted by security officials to view the bridges (which are off-limits to the public) and see other historic sites. A more typical phantom bridge, the Sparks Ferry Bridge that spans the East Fork of the White River in Jackson County, is the focus of one of Satolli's newest History in Your Own Backyard videos. He also has featured the Princess Theatre in downtown Rushville, a cinema house built in 1915 that closed after more than 100 years. The building, still often called "the Princess" by locals, has been renovated and reopened as a city center, with the mayor's office on an upper floor that has ceilings 20 feet high. Also in Rush County: scenic East Hill Cemetery, which Satolli notes is the burial site of 1940 Republican presidential candidate Wendell Willkie. Created in the 1850s with a "garden cemetery" design concept, East Hill was planned by a Prussian immigrant who had been the head gardener for one of the czars, according to History in Your Own Backyard. Towns without a single stoplight that have been the focus of our guest Satolli Glassmeyer's videos - and that we will explore during our show - include Saint Paul (Decatur County), once the site of a major goldfish farm, and Dillsboro (Dearborn County), where a sanitarium was patronized by guests who savored its mineral waters and spas. A former sheet metal worker, Satolli says he became fascinated by historic sites during weekend bicycle trips from his home when he was a teenager. His long cycling ventures, up to 100 miles round trip, would take him to neighboring towns, "where I  began  to  fall  in  love  with  the  buildings  and  bridges  constructed  in  the  late  1800s  and  early  1900s."

Gill has a background in cabaret, comedy, and music theatre.   We discuss: writing songs on planes, the vacuum analogy of lockdown, the challenge of having big gaps in between work, tying her identity to her occupation, the philosophy of “a bad day is a good story”, reharnessing your own narrative through comedy, knowing the ingredients to the recipe for self-care in tough times but not doing them out of worry she will not feel better, lockdown affording her the time and space for self-care, the twilight zone of waiting for Covid test results, appreciating the slower pace of lockdown, the shock of the first 2 weeks of Melbourne lockdown in March 2020, the good fortune of being able to find work, being “show fit” and becoming a genuine fan of exercise, the rollercoaster of lockdown and anticipation of Stage 4, the high expectations of the first lockdown, living with uncertainty and the extremes of emotions, the "What If" thoughts about Covid, tour life being preparation for lockdown, creative online social activities, the mental health benefits of pets, self-care and putting on your own mask before helping someone else, the simple pleasure of making a great cup of tea and having the time to drink it, the importance of not making your (theatre) job your whole life, the heartening hope that shows will return to Victoria, the emotional response of bargaining and wishing we had tougher restrictions earlier on, and the power of hindsight, lockdown fatigue, the class inequalities highlighted by the pandemic, fatigue from the news cycle, the security of being able to proactively seek therapy when engaged in full-time work, the benefits of CBT and thought-cataloguing to help maintain perspective, Gill’s super power, and Gill’s message to be kind, follow the rules and enjoy some sunshine.

Happy Holidays to all our listeners and thank you for taking the time to listen to the last episode of 2019! Today Belinda and Braydon discuss two friendly ghost stories from around the world. These two stories contain benevolent spirits and ghosts that helped people, or have provided friendly paranormal experiences to those who have encountered them.Belinda talks about the ghost of Frederick Frederici who was an Italian performer who died after a magnificent performance at the Princess Theatre in Melbourne, Australia. When the rest of the actors went out to do their final bow for the evening, it is said that Fred's ghost was seen bowing as well by all in attendance. The ghost still reportedly haunts the theatre and is regularly encountered by actresses and actors who regard his sightings as a sign of good luck.Braydon then goes on to discuss a friendly ghost who guided Ann Nutt to a hidden bounty of treasure buried under her family home in Uppingham, England. The ghost was persistent with Ann, and continued pestering her about the treasure until she eventually found it. The family made away with 200 ancient Roman coins that were worth approximately $40,000!___Follow the link for 40% off HelloFresh hellofresh-au.r69o.net/xa5JA___If you wanted to follow us on social media, we can be found on: Facebook, and on Instagram You, Me, and a Poltergeist, Braydon, BelindaCHECK OUT ALL THE OTHER PODCAST ON TNC: THATSNOTCANON.COM

Capping off what has been a stellar year for Brisbane melodic hardcore outfit She Cries Wolf, the band will be hosting a celebration party of sorts at the Crowbar on December 21.After starting the year by surprising their fans with the strategically balanced release of third album Liar, the band has travelled the country alongside Heist, sold out headlining shows and managed to perform at the iconic Princess Theatre.Reflecting back on the year, Luke Harriss takes us back to the release of Liar in February."It was something that we went to Tim with - because we were sitting on that album for a number of months - and then Tim Price from Collision said it would be a good idea to go with by just dropping it. I had the idea for a while to drop an album like a thief in the night so to speak and he affirmed it and agreed it would be a cool idea. He recommended the teaser which was with the artwork and we decided to get some people to share that around with the hashtag #everyonelovestheliar and it went really well. It was cool".In the full interview Luke goes further into the process including getting The Amity Affliction and Stepson on board, how hard it was to keep quiet, the differences musically between Liar and previous releases, the current state of the Brisbane music scene, how She Cries Wolf manages to stay ahead of the market, playing Liar in full at the December show and more.

Melbourne born soprano Maureen Howard was beloved by audiences and critics alike. At twelve years of age, she was a regular voice on the weekly 3DB Radio programme Swallows Juniorsand she later won the Vocal Section of television’s Swallow’s Parade. Though she studied singing from an early age, she wanted to be a hairdresser and, it was serendipitous that one of her ‘clients’ was associated with the two major theatre entrepreneurs J.C. Williamson and Garnet H. Carroll Management. A simple conversation during a hairdressing appointment gained Maureen a stage audition for J.C.Williamson at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Melbourne . They had just opened their production of My Fair Lady. The following week, the same ‘client’ arranged an audition for Garnet H. Carroll at the Princess Theatre in Melbourne and she was immediately offered a contract for Chorus - and later ‘stand-by’ for Marian the Librarian - in The Music Man. As would occur many times during her early career, Maureen went on in the star’s role. In April of 1961, she was cast in Lock Up Your Daughters with an additional song especially written for her character by the conductor Dobbs Franks. In August that year, she performed in Loesser’s Most Happy Fella with Inia Te Wiata and Ronal Jackson. Later that year, Garnett H. Carroll Management cast her as June Bronhill’s ‘stand-by’ in The Sound of Music and, again, Maureen was frequently seen in the role of Maria. In 1962, Maureen Howard won First Prize in the celebrated Sun Aria and left her contract for The Sound of Music. She was a frequent face and voice on television especially on the popular Sunny Side Up in 1963.After study, a year in Italy and then London – with the noted teacher Vera Rózsa - her operatic career started with Puccini’s Tosca in 1967 – starting her career at the top – with the Elizabethan Trust Opera. The production opened at the Perth Festival on February 11th and featured Reginald Byers and the Hungarian baritone Alexander Major as Cavaradossi and Scarpia along with the twenty-seven years old Maureen Howard. Her operatic debut was a success, with one critic writing “She may not be as imperious as some Toscas, but she certainly is more vocally secure than many … A powerful voice which is always beautifully controlled, and dominated the stage.”The same year, she performed Zerlina in Don Giovanni with a stellar cast featuring Neil Warren-Smith, Marcella Reale, Rosemary Gordon, Robert Gard, Ronald Maconaghie and John Germain. It was a controversial production directed by the young Jim Sharman. A production of Die Fledermaus as Rosalinda (and June Bronhill as the maid, Adele) was a hit with audiences. Next came performances of Venus in Tannhäuser, Tebaldo in Don Carlo, Liù in Turandot, Micaela in Carmen and the cover of Minnie in the Australian premiere of Puccini’s La fanciulla del West. Her career reached a new high with her assumption of Cio Cio San in Madama Butterfly in 1969 with a new production mounted especially for her talents. As a company member, she was also cast as Felice in Wolf-Ferrari’s School for Fathers, Josephine in HMS Pinafore, Elsie Maynard in Yeoman of the Guard along with Giulietta in a concert version of The Tales of Hoffmann.Along with Cio Cio San in Madama Butterfly, the roles of Nedda in Pagliacci and Musetta in La bohème fitted Maureen Howard to a tee. To many audiences, her performances in all three roles have never been surpassed by an Australian born performer. She created Musetta in the famous La bohème production by Tom Lingwood in 1971. “Maureen Howard’s Musetta stole the show … she has the wonderful ability for stance, stage presence and poise of hand which just fix one’s eyes upon her.” During the following season, she performed her first Mimi in the same production. Her debut as Nedda came in 1972 and she was usually cast alongside the Canio of Donald Smith – who also seemed ‘born for the role’. Sparks flew on stage when they ignited each other’s performances. “Maureen Howard was attractively wayward, singing powerfully in the final scene, yet making something tender of the ballatella.”From 1976, Maureen Howard appeared in various operatic and music theatre productions. Man of La Mancha and La belle Hélène were prominent during this time. Other operetta roles ensued – Kathy in The Student Prince, Eurydice in Orpheus in the Underworld, Violet Gray in The Belle of New York, Angèle in The Count of Luxembourg (with Robert Gard as her René), Ottilie Giesecke in White Horse Inn, Marianne in New Moon (with John Larsen as her leading man), Yum Yum in The Mikado and Phyllis in Iolanthe. She returned to Opera Australia for the role of the Foreign Woman in Menotti’s The Consul in 1986 after a decade hiatus from that company.A decade later, she appeared as a guest at the Robert Allman Farewell Gala at the Sydney Opera House singing the Pagliacci duet with her long-time colleague. This led to her being contracted Lady Macbeth in Verdi’s opera and the Witch in Hansel and Gretel. Her stage farewell came in 1998 in Sondheim’s Follies when she performed Heidi Schiller – singing “One More Kiss” to perfection. The career of Maureen Howard was as varied as the roles and styles she played. She was a Star of each medium (radio, television and stage) and was adored by a myriad of fans.
