Show notes: In this episode I recall Nicki and my busy Saturday in the midsouth. First we drove up to east Memphis to be on 98.1 The Max's "Geek Tank Radio" show (Ep. 7.05.2025) with fellow geeks Joe Thordardson, Allan Gilbreath, Max, and guest geek and voice actor Scott J. Carroll. We talked toons and discussed the Mid-South Cartoonists Association and con community in the Memphis area. They put on the annual Memphis Comic and Fantasy Con which returns to the Memphis Hilton Hotel this November 1st. The MSCA will be set up at this one day event.After the recording session we jumped back in the car and headed up to Comics Universe in Jackson, TN to see our buddy Mike Norton. We had a great time talking with Mike and long time comic shop owner "Lethal Rethel" Miller. I got a few books signed by Mike including my copy of "The Rock Gods Of Jackson, TN". Norton's first issue of “Krypto: The Last Dog Of Krypton” has hit stores, and his Image Comics series “Revival” is now a live action TV series on SyFy! The show stars Melanie Scrofano from “Wynonna Earp”, and can be seen on the SyFy channel on Thursday nights, or streaming on Peacock and YouTube. And don't forget that there's still a little bit of time left to back Mike's new “Battlepug” book on Kickstarter. Mike will be back at the Memphis Comic Expo/DonnieCon in September, and I'll have a table at the show as well.Nicki and I stopped by The Cellar comic shop on our way home. Show notes: On Saturday, May 31st I attended the 3rd annual Memphis Libraries Comic Con at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library location on Poplar Avenue. SNL's Chris Parnell was their special guest this year at the main library. Chris is originally from the Memphis area (Germantown, TN), and is the son of local radio legend Jack Parnell. I had a booth there up front on the left side again this year. The show had a great turnout and I sold several of my stickers, prints, and a few sketchcards. I got to do a few interviews with some of my fellow local cartoonists- Antone and Janet Wade/Toshigawa Universe*, Dale Martin/Watusi The Talking Dog, Matt Bowers/Memphis, and Eric McMeans/Raptor Boy. I had my wife/booth babe (and birthday girl) Nicki with me. She held down my booth while I got out from behind it to do the interviews.Also in this episode I go over some of my recent health issues, and give you info on upcoming events like Anime Blues Con, the Metropolis Superman Celebration, Memphis Comic Expo, MSCA upcoming art shows, monthly dinner gatherings at Garibaldi's Pizza, and SatArtDays at Casey's Art Box. Show notes: For this episode I attended the first ever MidSouth Mega Con at the Memphis Sports & Event Center located in the Memphis Fairgrounds. I was at this inaugural con to man the Mid-South Cartoonists Association and record a few interviews over the holiday weekend. I got to talk toons with local artists including Ryan Ladner, Shane Luttrell, That Katie Jones, Peter Melonas, Dr. Kevin Thorn, MSCA president Kevin L. Williams, and MCFC co-organizer/"Geek Tank Radio" co-host Brandon Olmstead. Kev brought along some of his Muppet friends- Kermit, Fozzie, and Grover. We handed out a lot of MSCA stickers and postcards, and even sold a few zines!There was lots of great cosplay, including our table neighbors The 731 Ghostbusters and Star Trek fan group Station Shelby. We loved getting t meet the amazing animals from the Soft Landings of Tennessee waterfowl rescue, and the awesomely chill pup from the GameOver Arcade in Southaven, MS. We also got to meet actors Reb Brown/Captain America, Sean Patrick Flanery/Young Indiana Jones, and legendary voice actor Billy West/Ren & Stimpy. (You can see pics on our MSCA Facebook page.)The space was huge, clean, and had great lighting and A/C. There's plenty of room for this con to expand for next year. The Memphis weather was definitely frightful outside, but it was dry and comfortable inside. This fall Memphis Comic Expo will be at this same event center in September. I'll have a table at DonnieCon for the first time in a few years. Between the pandemic, travel, and other show commitments I haven't been able to table there since probably 2018 at the AgCenter. Looking forward to MCX being at this new location.This Saturday, May 31st is the third annual Memphis Libraries Comic Con at the Benjamin L. The next gathering is on Tuesday, April 1st! The meet-ups are free and open to the public, but be sure to bring a few bucks to order off the menu and some art to show around.The following night after work I stopped by 901 Games to discuss Con Cards with the card game's creator (and longtime MSCA and NCS member), Greg Cravens. Greg can be found there on the first Wednesday of the month at 6pm, and can be spotted at many local conventions selling Con Cards and teaching event attendees how to play the game. It's been cold and snowy around here in the mid-south, but the snow ended and the sun came out on Saturday in time for the grand opening of the new Bricks & Minifigs location in Hernando, MS. Show notes: For this 70th episode, I took a quick trip up to Memphis to attend the Memphis Comic and Fantasy Convention at the Holiday Inn on the U of M campus. This year is the 14th anniversary for the local con. it was started by Joe Thordarson, Brandon Olmstead, and Allan Gilbreath - who also do the radio shows "Geek Tank Radio" and "Tool Talk Radio"on 98.9 The Roar. I ran into several local comic creators, some like Greg Cravens (Con Cards) and A.G. Howard (Howard Art Studios) I've known for about 4o years now! They were the two artists who mentored me when I first started airbrushing back in my late teens. Some other familiar faces (and voices) at the MCFC were Matt Bowers, Allan Gilbreath, Shawn Howe, Devin Hodges, John Martin, and Chris "The Jowers" Jowers. I also beamed aboard Station Shelby to talk with James Wheatly about the local Star Trek fan club in town. There were lots of vendors, artists, and even some LEGO to play with in the dealer's room, plus around the con there was a game room, panel room, and an autograph section. I had a great time talking toons with everyone at the con on Sunday. It's kinda crazy how many cons and art events there are in town these days! I talked to the couple about the genesis of going into business with each other on this new Bricks & Minifigs franchise opportunity in their home town, their plans for the future of the local shop (parties, workshops, art gallery, and more!), and their love of LEGO. The Bricks & Minifigs Hernando shop will be officially opening in January 2025 (hopefully Jan. 11th), but fingers crossed they plan a soft opening on Black Friday- or as they call it, "Block Friday" and the Christmas shopping season. They were doing a "Buy Day" buying event when I stopped by to visit, and many folks were stopping buy to trade in their LEGO sets and loose bricks for cash. One cool thing about the used bricks is that the Hernando Bricks & Minifigs shop will not only be washing all the bricks they take in, they will also regularly be disinfecting all the ones in their loose bins, too! You will be able to buy new and used LEGO sets, mini-figs, and loose bricks to create your own plastic creations. This brand new Bricks & Minifigs store is located at 210 E. Commerce Street, Suite #7 in Hernando, MS. From Memphis head south on I-55 to exit 280 (Hernando/Commerce Street), turn right on Commerce Street, stay in the left lane, go past the McDonalds, and turn right after the R/R tracks. The shop is in the shopping center next to Bazar's Bakery & Restaurant, and just up the street from the DeSoto County Museum and Area 51 Ice Cream. Oh, and there's a new mural inside the shop by MSCA member Greg Cravens! Show notes: This episode features an interview I did with long time Mid-South Cartoonists Association member Jim Palmer. We talked toons after one of the recent MSCA monthly dinner meet-ups at Garibaldi's Pizza. Jim's first printed work was in 1969 while working at a Baptist Publishing here in Memphis. After being there just a few months, they requested he come up with a comics page for one of their magazines for kids in grades 1-6. They said they wanted it to be a (their words) "a Christian PEANUTS", and named it "CAPERS". After leaving there in 1971, he continued to freelance it, as well as do other illustrations until September 1987. The next month Jim began "LI'L E". Jim said, "I began LI'L E in the October issue of "MEMPHIS STAR" magazine, a local (at the time) music mag. I had been working there for maybe a year & a half by then doing paste-up (remember that?), working in the dark room, & providing a few cartoon style illustrations for each issue. I wanted to do a regular strip or page of my own creation. The editor said ok, but it had to be done "off-the-clock". It had to have some kind of local music connection, but I wanted it to be something that would also work outside Memphis. Thinking newspaper syndication. Having grown up listening to Elvis, I thought why not do an Elvis impersonator, & I suppose also being a PEANUTS fan to make him a little kid. That's about all the "inspiration" there was to it." Jim got into acting during his second year of college and did about a dozen shows before graduating. He's been doing it ever since, including plays around town- many with his wife Jo Lynne. He was in "The People VS Larry Flint" and once portrayed Alice Cooper's butler for TV. Back in 2010 Jim portrayed the evil Professor Moriarty in Theatre Memphis' production of "Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure". I did my "Elementary – The Many Faces of Sherlock Holmes" art show out in the lobby area of Theatre Memphis during the run of the play. In 2022, Jim played Police Inspector Goole for Germantown Community Theatre's production of "An Inspector Calls", and has participated in other GCT plays and the MSCA art shows there as well. When the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in late June that the nation's colleges and universities could not take race into account in admissions practices, college admissions offices were not the only people left confused. High school students and school counselors were also plunged into uncertainty. Later in the show, Dr. Aminta Breaux, President of Bowie State University, joins us to talk about affirmative action and college admissions. But first, how are today's high school students thinking about college? The total number of students enrolled in postsecondary education in the U.S. dropped over the past decade. The National Center for Education Statistics reports that undergraduate enrollment was 15 percent lower in fall 2021 than in fall 2010. 42 percent of that decline occurred during the pandemic. But among high school graduates, a majority are still enrolling in college or university, according to the 2021 data from Bureau of Labor Statistics. We sit down with two people closely involved with young students considering their future join us. Brian Stewart is a School Counselor and Department Chair at Catonsville High School in Baltimore County. Marian Hoyt is a school counselor at Howard County's newest public school, Guilford Park High School, which will open in two weeks in Jessup. Most recently Hoyt has been a school counselor at Bard High School Early College in Baltimore City. She is also on the board of the Maryland School Counselor Association, MSCA, where she is High School Vice President. What are they hearing from their students, many of whom are considering options outside of the 4-year college path? Plus, a conversation with Dr. Aminta Breaux, President of Bowie State University, Maryland's oldest HBCU. Show Notes: Katie Jones was born in Memphis, TN and studied at the Memphis College of Art for her BFA in Painting and a Masters of Art in Teaching in Art Education. A majority of her time is spent making classroom examples or lesson plans but at the request of her therapist she is allowing herself to be "Katie the Artist" again in her life. Her childhood was spent growing up between Frayser and Raleigh in North Memphis and would often draw to escape the harsh reality of growing up without a father in her life. After promising her grandmother in 4th grade she would go to the Memphis College of Art she did just that and went on to get a BFA in painting and later on a Masters of Art in Teaching in Art Education to spread the joy and chaos of art to kids in Kindergarten to 12th grade which she has done fully licensed since 2010. Katie was also greatly influenced by the southerwestern artist Ted DeGrazia and Keith Haring. She would often focus on the way people sat or moved with each other than what they were wearing or their faces, and developed her own style of often faceless figures. She is a member of the Mid-South Cartoonists Association, Artists' Link, and is the new social media director for MidSouthCon. She has had her art in art shows around the mid-south including recently had her art featured in the MSCA's "SPAMalittle: Knights Of The Drawing Table" art show at Germantown Community Theatre, and will be part of Playhouse On The Square's 45th Annual Original Art Auction on April 22nd, and the upcoming Memphis Libraries' Comic Con on Free Comic Book Day- Saturday, May 6th. Show Notes: It's been a very busy (and wet) couple of weeks here for us cartoonists but overall it 's been a lot of fun. "Spamalittle; Knights Of The Drawing Table" is the 2nd MSCA art show at Germantown Community Theatre, and we'll be back again next season. This show featured “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” inspired artwork on display (and for sale) by our members. The Spamalittle art show runs in conjunction with their production of “Spamalot The Musical” March 3-19 at GCT– 3037 Forest Hill Irene Rd. The next morning we were drawn together for our latest Sat-Art-Day at 901 Comics East out on Macon Road. It was another sketchy Saturday in the back gallery room and our next Sat-Art-Day is on March 25th 10-2, plus another Drink-N-Draw event is scheduled for Wednesday, March 15th 6-8. The creative team behind Stoned Ninja will teach you what they know about making comics all while enjoying a beer at Crosstown Brewery (1264 Concourse Avenue) on March 23rd from 6-8pm. Show notes: For this episode of Drawing Funny I take a trip to our couch to have a comics conversation with my wife and live-in I.T. person- Nicki Workman (with special guest appearance by our cat Jarael). This is a follow up to Episode 47 – “Back To Basics". While on our way home from the MSCA December dinner meet-up this month I told Nicki about a couple recent conversations with some fellow local creators. They had asked for my advice on their art and projects. Well, even though I do a podcast that offers advice on just about every episode (and even multiple times on each of those episodes), after my many failures and less than stellar art career I've been questioning my art expertise when it comes to giving advice. I asked her is she thought I was qualified, and that conversation led to this episode which includes some very good advice by her. Not just on creating art, but some of the business basics of being creative for a living, as well as her life in corporate America, and reasons for continuing her education at this point in her life. Was happy to catch her on break between semesters to get her to share her thoughts. I'm super proud of her being able to juggle a full time day job and work trips while attending grad school online and keeping a 4.0 GPA at the same time. She's in the home stretch for her MBA! In this podcast, Olli Lagerspetz & Silvia Caprioglio Panizza, the two current Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellows (2022) at the Centre for Ethics discuss their EU-funded projects, the value of carrying them out at the Centre, and similarities between their philosophical interests. SCP's project, Moral Impossibility: Rethinking Choice and Conflict (MIGHT), focuses on the scope of what is possible for the subject in a moral sense, and how the range of possibilities that we have available is important in determining what our choices are and mean, as well as in revealing our deepest moral commitments. In this conversation she outlines various forms of moral impossibility, with one extended example from animal testing, and applies the research question to other contemporary issues such as the war in Ukraine, concluding with further applications and interdisciplinary directions for the project. – In his project, Philosophy as Cultural Self-Knowledge: R. G. Collingwood, Peter Winch and the Human Sciences (WC-CULT), OL discusses the role of the humanities and social sciences. History is neither sacred memory nor litigation – as it too often seems in the present war – but targeted inquiries. As with philosophy, the value of the human sciences lies in that they enhance the self-knowledge and self-understanding of cultures and societies. Show notes: So, just what is the MSCA..? The Mid-South Cartoonists Association (MSCA) is a non-profit organization of professional cartoonists, aspiring cartoonists, and cartooning enthusiasts. In 2022 the MSCA has celebrated 35 years of drawing funny in the Mid-South, and our podcast just entered it's 3rd season. For the MSCA it all started way back in the spring of 1987 when a small group of professional cartoonists came together to form The Memphis Cartoonists Group. The name didn't stick and by the third meeting and first official newsletter the name became The Mid-South Cartoonist Association (with ‘Cartoonist' becoming plural in 2000). Many founding members worked from home so the MSCA was created to bring together cartooning professionals, and invite aspiring professionals and cartooning fans of all backgrounds, ages and skill levels to join in on the fun of cartooning. Our members have worked for newspapers, magazines, ad agencies, and comic book publishers such as Marvel, DC Comics, Image, and Dark Horse, as well as self-publishing their own creator-owned projects and teaching others. The group has promoted the art of cartooning by putting its creativity and time behind various cartooning classes, conventions, charity fundraisers, art shows, anthology comics/zines, drawing nights (and mornings), art trips, web comics, a podcast, as well as having appeared on TV, radio, other podcasts, and in various print media. Our aim is to help more cartoonists, writers, and animators to reach their goals no matter how young or old, published or just starting out. Whether you enjoy simply reading cartoons, dig drawing magazine cartoons or comic books, like to mentor or want to learn, or even if you just need to find an artist or writer to collaborate with, please come check us out. If you love cartoons, are drawn to comics, or just draw funny then the MSCA is for you...and it's free to join us. Either join our mailing list, interact with us on social media, message us on Facebook, or stop by any MSCA event. It's pretty simple and doesn't cost you anything. If you'd like to join us in person, we meet on the 1st Tuesday of each month from 6-8pm at Garibaldi's Pizza near the U of M. In this episode of Philosophy Voiced, Marie Skłodowská-Curie Fellow Silvia Caprioglio Panizza interviews Sophie Grace Chappell, Professor of Philosophy at the Open University, discussing her the scope and significance of ethics, philosophical style, poetry, non-human animals, embodiment, contemporary politics, climate change, and being a transgender philosopher. Much of the conversation revolves around Prof Chappell's recent book Epiphanies: An Ethics of Experience (Oxford University Press 2022).  Sophie Grace Chappell was one of five speakers at the MSCA funded workshop ‘“Here I am, I can do no other – or can I?” On the Reality of Moral Impossibility' as part of the MIGHT project and hosted by the Centre for Ethics on 9-10 September 2022.   Bio: Sophie Grace Chappell is Professor of Philosophy at the Open University. She works in ethics, the philosophy of literature, the philosophy of sex and gender, ancient and mediaeval philosophy, epistemology, and philosophy of religion She is the author of over a hundred articles and numerous books, including Aristotle and Augustine on Freedom (Springer 1995), The Inescapable Self (Weidenfeld & Nicolson 2005), Knowing What To Do (Oxford University Press 2017). She is now pursuing a number of different writing projects, including a new book: Trans Figured: How to survive as a transgender person in a cisgender world.

Did you know that more than two million Americans experience some type of rotator cuff injury every year? According to the National Institute of Health, 22 percent of the population has some kind of shoulder tear and by the time we reach old age (80s), that number jumps to nearly 37 percent! Wow. That's why I was so happy to meet Andrew Rockenfield, a YouTuber and IT professional who has been vlogging on his shoulder recovery since last May in an effort to help others heal from this tough operation. As you guys know, my surgery is on the 23rd of this month, so what better time to help you guys as well as myself? Not only that, Andrew is just an interesting person. He is a husband, father of two, head coach of the Alpine Development Team at Snowbasin Resort, head coach of a girls basketball team, and IT Professional who specializes in helping companies become more efficient through the use of technology.He has also served in the United States Air Force, worked as a police officer, been a personal trainer, and was the IT Director of a large healthcare facility.He holds degrees in Computer Engineering, Business, and Mathematics.  His certifications in IT include, CCNP, MSCA and his certifications in coaching include PSIA Level 3, Children's Specialist 2, and USSS Level 300.His passions include helping people improve themselves through education in health, nutrition, and fitness.  He enjoys working out, playing basketball, alpine skiing, electronics, movies, and spending time with his family.Tapping into his love of storytelling through the visual medium, he runs a YouTube channel to help others recover from and gain insight on what to expect after shoulder surgery.He lives in Utah with his wife, two kids, Vizsla, and a yellow-bellied slider.Before the podcast, check out his YouTube channel here - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCP96-YlHauZEzc6Ghn0DeNg
