fWotD Episode 2914: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Sunday, 27 April 2025, is The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask is a 2000 action-adventure game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. It was the second The Legend of Zelda game to use 3D graphics, following Ocarina of Time (1998). Designed by a creative team led by Eiji Aonuma, Yoshiaki Koizumi, and Shigeru Miyamoto, Majora's Mask was completed in less than two years. It features enhanced graphics and several gameplay changes, but reuses elements and character models from Ocarina of Time, which the game's creators called a creative decision made necessary by time constraints. The story takes place months after Ocarina of Time. Link arrives in a parallel world, Termina, and becomes embroiled in a quest to prevent the moon from crashing in three days' time. The game introduces gameplay concepts revolving around a perpetually repeating three-day cycle and the use of various masks that transform Link into different forms. As the player progresses through the game, Link learns to play numerous melodies on his ocarina, which allow him to control the flow of time, open hidden passages, or manipulate the environment. Characteristic of the Zelda series, completion of the game involves successfully navigating through several dungeons that contain complex puzzles and enemies. Majora's Mask requires the Expansion Pak add-on for the Nintendo 64, which provides additional memory for more refined graphics and greater capacity in generating on-screen characters.Majora's Mask earned universal acclaim from critics and is widely considered one of the best video games ever made. It received praise for its level design, story, and surrealist art direction, and has been noted for its darker tone and themes compared to other Nintendo titles. While the game only sold about half as many copies as its predecessor, it generated a substantial cult following. The game was rereleased as part of The Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition for the GameCube in 2003, via the Virtual Console service for the Wii and Wii U, and the Nintendo Classics service for Nintendo Switch. An enhanced remake for the Nintendo 3DS, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D, was released in 2015.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:48 UTC on Sunday, 27 April 2025.For the full current version of the article, see The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Gregory.

In this weeks episode: we talk Matt's Japan trip - specifically Ghibli theme park and the wonder of a park built on vibes. And then we get into Aonuma's take on game design. Eiji Aonuma is the game director behind much of the Zelda series. He's Miyomoto's protege in many respects. He is a great project manager. But is he creative? Recently he commented on game design, and how he doesn't think it is possible to think "narrative first" because it will limit game hook/loop ideas. Add these comments to some he made in years past and it presents a picture of a man who just isn't that creative. Japan traditionally put gameplay before narrative for most of its videogame history. So, this is mostly just a traditionalist view imo. But it does shed light on why Zelda has been rehashing the same story every game for 30 years or more.

It's been a long and bumpy road leading up to the release of “The Day Before,” the open-world post-apocalyptic MMO was at one point the most wishlisted game on Steam, following an impressive early reveal. But gradually, that hype turned into skepticism, wondering if developer Fntastic could deliver on its ambitious vision. Well, we finally have an answer: nope. Less than a week since the game launched into early access, the studio has announced it will be shutting down, and doesn't have the necessary funding to continue its support. In a statement posted on X, Fntastic wrote “The Day Before has failed financially, and we lack the funds to continue. All income received is being used to pay off debts to our partners.” There's also rumors the studio behind TimeSplitters might be closing its doors as well, and if you think there's an official chronological order to The Legend of Zelda games, series producer Eiji Aonuma has some words for you.

After a brief hiatus, Ajay and Isi are back with another episode of (Pop) Cultural Marxism! In episode 7, they sojourn amidst the splendid ruins of Hyrule in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, the much celebrated 2023 game from Nintendo's EPD development group, directed and produced by Hidemaro Fujibayashi and Eiji Aonuma. Before delving into the series' past and present iterations, the two spend some time catching up on what's new at the movies—including the expected summer blockbusters, relative degrees of quackery, and other matters. Then it's on to Nintendo and its quasi-mercantilist business model, the awe-inspiring complexity of the latest entry in the Zelda franchise, leading to excurses on Situationist psychogeography, flânerie, combinatorial aesthetics, architectural reasoning and silent film techniques. Taking up Tears of the Kingdom as a kind of Trauerspiel in the Benjaminian sense, they explore the dialectical tension between humor and mourning, diegetic and critical knowledge formation, comparative religion, and the beauty of works that are incomparably more than the sum (or multiplication) of their parts. Stay tuned for answers to burning listener questions on the game's environmental (or extractivist) dimensions—with reference to Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke—and the (fairly incomprehensible) class structure of Hyrule.

The release of a new Zelda feels like an Olympic-level event. This release feels a little different due to the total domination not only in sales but also in cultural saturation. It's time to kick back and relax with another GVGCast, and there's a lot to talk about: the slow and sad apparent demise of E3, that Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom gameplay demo by Eiji Aonuma, a pair of Sonic-related news tidbits (one promising and one just plain weird), Final Fantasy XVI going gold, and more -- including, as always, topics suggested by our wonderful Patrons!

This is a beefy episode so let's get right into it. Today we're going to dig into this Nintendo Direct and talk about why there has been so much discussion after the Direct about the end of Nintendo Switch. Do we think that's true? Let's talk about it. We also go through all of the Direct announcements and share our thoughts and even grade our predictions. With all the chit chat about Tears of the Kingdom, we found ourselves thinking fondly about Eiji Aonuma so in our Nintendo Storytime, we share a really fun memory about when he visited New York for New York Comic-Con and was a true tourist itching to try all the iconic NY things no matter how questionable! Of course we will be talking about games we are playing and wrapping up with a handful of questions from our amazing Patreon subscribers.
