First up, Activision and former Activision CEO Bobby Kotick both got into dustups with CWA, the union that represents over 1,000 workers across Microsoft and Activision, with Kotick claiming that harassment suits against Activision Blizzard were “fake,” engineered to juice CWA membership, while – over here in the real world – CWA is working to get an Activision employee his job back after he was fired (allegedly) for talking about guns… at the company that makes Call of Duty. Hmmmm. Then we move on to Civilization VII, which Luke has many, many thoughts about, none of them positive. The game feels distinctly unfinished, he says – a sign of the times when even such a ubiquitous series no longer commands the time and resources necessary to emerge from the oven fully baked. After that, Chris tells us about a thing that rules: Lies of P, the Pinocchio-themed Bloodborne-like that's receiving DLC in the near future. OpenAI-concurrent Anthropic is druk bezig met een nieuwe investeringsronde, waarbij 750 miljoen dollar opgehaald moet worden, tegen een valuering van 18,4 miljard. Daarover vertelt Joe van Burik in deze Tech Update. Anthropic werd in 2021 pas opgezet door voormalig medewerkers van OpenAI. Ze ontwikkelen daar een eigen AI-taalmodel en chatbot, die heet Claude. De nieuwe investeringsronde wordt geleid door Menlo Ventures, dezelfde durfinvesteerdersclub die ooit geld staken in Uber onder meer. Dat meldt onderzoeksplatform The Information. Dat komt dan bij de 2 miljard dollar die Google onlangs al in Anthropic stak, afgelopen oktober, en eerder dit jaar kwam Amazon al met een investering van 4 miljard. Bij Anthropic gebruiken ze trouwens ook de cloud-infrastructuur en andere technologie van Google en Amazon Web Services. Daarmee is deze startup écht de tegenhanger van OpenAI, dat vooral door Microsoft wordt gesteund. Bij OpenAI wordt ook al even gekeken naar een nieuwe manier om geld om te halen, tegen een waardering van 86 miljard dollar. Bij Anthropic geldt een valuering van dus nog steeds niet een kwart daarvan, maar eerder dit jaar was de valuering nog 5 miljard dollar. In today's Daily Fix:Despite being the victim of one of the worst data breaches in games industry history, Sony received some positive news today. Reuters is reporting that the PlayStation 5 is on track to outpace the PS4 in sales, with more than 50 million PS5's sold since 2020. By comparison, the PS4 has sold about 114 million units since 2013. The PS5 is also outselling its competitor, the Xbox Series X and Series S family, by a comfortable margin. In other news, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick has formally announced his departure form the company, effective at the end of the year. Kotick helped turn the company around back in the early 90's, but his recent history with the company has been marred by scandal. Activision Blizzard has faced several allegations including sexual harassment and retaliation. The company settled its lawsuit with the State of California earlier this month. And speaking of Activision Blizzard, the company is trying to find a way to let all players enjoy the new Overwatch heroes as soon as they drop. We'll see how that works out for them.

On this day in legal history in 1946 the Nuremberg executions were carried out, following the trials of ten high level officials of the Third Reich.On October 16, 1946, a somber chapter in the aftermath of World War II closed with the Nuremberg executions. Ten prominent members of the Nazi regime were hanged, marking the end of the historic Nuremberg trials that sought justice for crimes against humanity, war crimes, and genocide. The executed men included Hans Frank, Wilhelm Frick, Alfred Jodl, Ernst Kaltenbrunner, Wilhelm Keitel, Joachim von Ribbentrop, Alfred Rosenberg, Fritz Sauckel, Arthur Seyss-Inquart, and Julius Streicher. Hermann Göring, another top Nazi official scheduled to be executed, evaded the noose by committing suicide the night before.These executions took place in the gymnasium of Nuremberg Prison and were carried out by the United States Army. Master Sergeant John C. Woods and his assistant, military policeman Joseph Malta, were the executioners. They used the standard drop method instead of the long drop, which led to considerable controversy as some of the men did not die quickly from a broken neck, but slowly strangled to death. Reports indicated that some hangings took from 14 to 28 minutes, leading to claims of botched executions, which the Army later denied.The order of the executions began at 1:11 a.m. with von Ribbentrop and spanned just about two hours. The condemned men were allowed final statements, many of which expressed a mix of nationalistic sentiments, pleas for peace, and even denial of guilt. For instance, Ribbentrop's final words were a wish for understanding between East and West, and for peace in the world. On the other hand, Fritz Sauckel claimed his innocence and asked God to make Germany great again.Kingsbury Smith of the International News Service provided an eyewitness account, complete with photographs, that later appeared in newspapers. The initial belief was that the bodies were taken to Dachau for cremation. However, they were actually incinerated in a crematorium in Munich, and the ashes were scattered over the river Isar.The Nuremberg executions and the trials that preceded them remain landmarks in the evolution of international law and human rights. While they meted out justice to some of the perpetrators of the Holocaust and other wartime atrocities, they also ignited debates on judicial ethics and the very nature of evil. Jones, a top U.S. Bankruptcy Judge for the Southern District of Texas, has resigned amid an ethics investigation. The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals issued a formal misconduct complaint against him for not disclosing his live-in relationship with Elizabeth Freeman, an attorney at Jackson Walker LLP, a prominent bankruptcy firm. In a statement, Jones said he had become a "distraction" to the court's work and resigned to refocus attention on the court. His departure may trigger further scrutiny of the high-profile Chapter 11 cases he had overseen, including those involving Neiman Marcus, JCPenney, Seadrill Ltd., and Chesapeake Energy.The misconduct complaint was lodged by Chief Judge Priscilla Richman of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, which has jurisdiction over federal courts in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. Microsoft has signed a 10-year agreement to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation but may make other Activision Blizzard franchises exclusive to Xbox.The acquisition expands Microsoft's gaming business by roughly 10,000 employees. Although Kotick will receive at least $390M in stocks and incentives, the Communication Workers of America union views the buyout favorably, as Microsoft has committed to remaining neutral with regard to unionization discussions.Animal Crossing. IGN and GameInformer report that Nintendo is once again teaming up with LEGO to develop five Animal Crossing sets. They will release in March 2024 and feature Isabelle, Tom Nook, Kapp'n, and a few villagers (Rosie, Bunnie, Marshal, and Julian). The sets have a similar structure and feel to the Mario and Donkey Kong-themed sets. Prices range from $15-75.CD Projekt Red. Eurogamer reports that employees at the Polish development studio have formed a union in response to three rounds of layoffs that affected 159 staff members across various studios. The union is part of the national OZZ IP union. Membership, however, does not extend to Vancouver-based staff or anyone not on a Polish contract.EPIC. The Verge reports that the Unreal Engine developer is changing the pricing structure of the software for individuals not involved with game development, such as film- and automakers. The new structure will move to per-set pricing, which is consistent with software like Creative Cloud. Unreal Engine will continue to use its current pricing structure for game developers, and educators and students will still be able to use it for free.IGN, meanwhile, reports that EPIC and Psyonix will no longer allow item trading in Rocket League to bring the game in line with its other properties that have item shops. The claim is that this will allow Rocket League vehicles to come to other EPIC games, supporting cross-game ownership. The change will go into effect on December 5th.PlayStation. The Verge reports that Sony will be bringing cloud-streamed PS5 to various regions throughout October. This is a feature available to PlayStation Plus Premium members. Japan will be the first region on October 17th, followed by Europe on the 23rd, and finally North America on the 30th. Sony has not announced which titles will be available yet but will include those from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog, digital games players own like Resident Evil 4, Genshin Impact, and Fortnite, and trials for games like Hogwarts Legacy and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.Stardew Valley. Polygon reports that Festival of Seasons, a Stardew Valley concert tour by SOHO Live, will be starting an international circuit on February 17th, 2024. Diablo 4 has been released in paid early access? Blizzard continues its mysterious maneuvers. On the whole, Diablo 4 is pleasing its action rpg fans with a great game, though Playstation players are stuck with connectivity issues. The day after Britain's regulator, the UK Competition and Markets Authority, blocked Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick is on the record about his planned appeal. Britain's decision could affect the FTC's decision in the U.S., but Kotick says of the UK CMA, “they don't really understand our business.” The House of Representatives has passed a bill to raise the debt ceiling, but it's widely considered to be “dead on arrival” to the Senate. The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling audiobook. This classic children's book by Rudyard Kipling tells the story of Mowgli, a young boy raised by wolves: his escapades and adventures with his dear friends Bagheera the panther and Baloo the bear, his capture by the Monkey-People, his attempt at reintegration into human society, and his ultimate triumph over the lame tiger Shere Khan. The account of Mowgli's adventures is followed by several short stories, including the tales of the brave white seal, Kotick, and the tenacious mongoose, Rikki-Tikki-Tavi. Packed with adventure and Jungle Law wisdom, this book has pervaded popular culture as the basis of many film and stage adaptations, including the popular Disney movie, and through its adoption as a motivational book by the Cub Scouts.

At the video game developers' annual meeting of stockholders, investors voted on several proposals, as well as who gets to be on the company's board of directors over the next year. A total of 533,703,580 shareholders have voted to keep Kotick on the board, while on 62,597,199 have voted against it. Some like to don street clothes, while others prefer sharp suits. And many of them wear some form of armor, especially those in the more action-orientated genres.
