Somehow I suspect you've either recently been in a conflict where you were corrected or have seen a need or opportunity to offer correction to another. If not, perhaps it's just around the corner. How about some guidelines from Jesus about that? Because we are God's children, and He warns us sternly against "despising the little ones." After radical detachment, we have to "turn back" to rescue the lost sheep of our inner child, and the lost sheep in our original and church families when they are also our brothers and sisters in Christ. Using Matthew 18 as a touch point for discussion of the inner child is what we call using a "spiritual sense" of Scripture. It's fascinating to me that Jesus emphasized His teaching in 18 and part of 19 by placing children before Him (remember that chapter and verse numbers were not in the original writings, but added for our convenience). Like flesh and blood parables, children bookend His teaching on boundaries, and we learn that not only are healthy boundaries necessary to faith in dealing with one another in the family of God, but they're also necessary in human and faith development, too. Ann Bracken has published three poetry collections, The Altar of Innocence, No Barking in the Hallways: Poems from the Classroom, Once You're Inside: Poetry Exploring Incarceration, and a memoir entitled Crash: A Memoir of Overmedication and Recovery (Charing Cross Press, 2022). She serves as a contributing editor for Little Patuxent Review and co-facilitates the Wilde Readings Poetry Series in Columbia, Maryland, and she's a frequent contributor to Mad in America's family section. She volunteers as a correspondent for the Justice Arts Coalition, exchanging letters with incarcerated people to foster their use of the arts. Her poetry, essays, and interviews have appeared in numerous anthologies and journals, her work has been featured on Best American Poetry, and she's been a guest on Grace Cavalieri's The Poet and The Poem radio show. Her advocacy work promotes using the arts to foster paradigm change in the areas of emotional wellness, education, and prison abolition. This interview focuses on Once You're Inside as well as Crash: A Memoir of Overmedication and Recovery. Crash is the story of Helen Dempsey and her daughter Ann who both fall victim to the same regimen of overmedication at the hands of the mental health system. Helen struggles with intractable depression and initially turns to self-medication with alcohol, but finds herself unable to recover despite numerous drugs, hospitalizations, and electroconvulsive therapy. Ann vows to build a different life for herself, but eventually descends into the pain of a mysterious migraine and intractable darkness lasting for many years. She was severely overmedicated with opioids and psychiatric drugs and then Methadone, DHE-45 injections, Migrant nasal spray (for headaches) and injecribele Demerol (for really bad days) once she was off opiates. To keep her out of depression (maintenance), she was prescribed Wellbutrin, Elavil, Topamax, and Valium; Ann crashes her car twice. It took her 4 months of energy healing to discontinue the pain meds and two years later, about a year to get off of psych drugs. Because traditional medical treatments have failed her, she challenges her doctors' advice and discovers ways to heal the source of her physical and emotional pain without drugs. The question of why her mother never got well continues to haunt her long after her mother's death until she finds the missing puzzle pieces she'd searched for all her life stashed in a dusty box in her sister's attic. Today, we are chatting about the book, Teacher Dropout. It's a book that is brutally honest about the realities that students and teachers face in some schools. Lack of money, resources, time. The hardships of poverty, abuse, abandonment. This book made me laugh, cry, and feel so many things. In today's conversation, we chatted about school systems, identity, and the power of grace. Ann C. Averill is a retired teacher and the author of Teacher Dropout: Finding Grace in an Unjust School. She lives in the hills of western Massachusetts with her husband of many years, her cat, and a flock of silly chickens. She enjoys tap dancing, kayaking, ebiking, and long walks with friends. And she adores babysitting for her grandchildren. No matter how many big or little sufferings we offer up, if we do not also allow God to transform the thoughts and emotions surrounding our sufferings, we have not really discerned or submitted to their purpose; we have not undergone the deep transformation that Jesus died to give us and that the Bible calls a Sabbath rest. Because it is such a profound, secret work, only God can identify and accomplish in us the deep soul work of purgatory, or sanctification, as thoroughly as we need it. He does not simply cover our sins with his blood, he scrubs out the deep, set-in wounds, “all unrighteousness.” We can and must dispose ourselves to receive this rest, but is always still a gift, one that God insistently offers us through the repeating circumstances and relationships that are meant to attract our attention and cooperation. Consider a time when you spent a lot of time and resources with a group trying to solve a problem, and it seemed like nothing happened as a result. You didn't feel valued and thought you wasted your time. You wouldn't do that again. Annie brings clarity as to why this happens in the decision-making process and what the bigger story may be. She helps us consider our role of listening as a leader and how to move beyond checking off the listening box to instead be an effective leader, inspiring people to continue to be engaged in the work that matters. Annie Rappeport is a current International Education and Policy Ph.D. candidate at the University of Maryland, College Park and an Ann C. Wylie Dissertation Fellow for 2021. Her research focus areas are memory construction, peacebuilding and conflict transformation after conflict and natural disasters. In 2020, Annie received the University of Maryland Outstanding Graduate Student Distinguished Service award for her two years of service as the Graduate Student Government President, as an active representative on university task forces related to mental health, affordability and access in higher education, diversity and inclusion and civic engagement. Annie is an active member of the International Listening Association and the National Coalition for Dialogue and Deliberation furthering her commitment to the value of listening based servant leadership and community engagement. Alongside her dissertation, Annie pursues research related to strategic listening and effective dialogue towards health democracies in the United States and in the Israeli-Palestinian context. Her work in dialogue and listening in healthcare settings led her to Dublin, Ireland to speak for the International Listening Association. Annie has testified repeatedly at the Maryland General Assembly for student related issues including the Student Voter Empowerment Act and the Right for Graduate Student Employees to Collectively Bargain. In this episode, be surprised at how listening catalysed a shy, quiet person into a strong leader working with complex situations. Annie will share her story as well as help you to understand better what is needed so that the value of listening is not lost. Annie also talks about how power plays a role and how to work around those who choose not to listen. She touches on the non-verbal form of listening, where breathing is one way to cue into what's going on in another person's mind and heart. She also talks about a balanced way of having a dialogue-focused listening conversation where you not only take in what others have to offer; you also contribute to enhancing communication for better decision-making and change. "Human relationships are what matter. And being authentic, learning about the people you're working with, the people you represent, the people you lead, and following through with them and showing your gratitude to them are the whole cycle. And it needs to happen over and over." - Annie Rappeport Listen IN Notes: 01:46 - Annie shares her interesting childhood experiences of listening, which now has a huge influence on how she listens. 04:42 - She shares how she was always shy, curious and in an listening absorption mode to best relate to the circumstances. 06:12 - That pivotal (and scary) moment that influenced her approach to listening where listening and having a voice is now more balanced - she calls this dialogue-focused. 11:52 - Listening as the core to about every area; also listening to nonverbal cues 13:00 - Annie shares how breathing and listening interplay. 16:24 - How this listening approach helps in education: the shift from absorption to a more participatory mode 20:12 - Leadership is listening to the environment, and being in tune with your community as well. 22:55 - One impactful listening experience she has: ongoing research projects understanding better the efforts of peace-based organizations that are centered around listening, specifically between communities in the Middle East, in Israel and Palestine. She shares examples of how to help listening be possible, also in extreme circumstances of conflict and how this supports overall leadership development. 29:40 - Power dynamics: How it impacts how much people are willing to share, listen, and act upon what they're hearing. 31:07 - What does it mean for leaders to listen and not just check off a box? 37:35 - Understanding the power dynamics to help get positive ideas to come alive. 46:16 - A missed opportunity: when elements of a discussion had been integrated into a decision, but it never got relayed back to those who were part of the conversation. 52:17 - Why it's important to be aware of these gaps: the need for follow through after being in the listening sessions 53:04 - Annie's nugget of wisdom that could impact you personally and at work: Be the leader in your world, wherever that is. That you are making sure those gaps don't happen. 58:23 - How to listen being curious with empathy and compassion: taking a moment to unlearn your preconceived notions, and making yourself a blank slate, even if it's just for a moment Key Takeaways: "Listening just to how the people around you are breathing can really tell you so much about where they are in their minds or in their hearts." - Annie Rappeport "When people feel listened to, it just changes everything." - Annie Rappeport "Those one-on-one conversations are what people remember; it's how I've been able to keep in touch with and have long-lasting relationships with the people I work with, which is meaningful, personally, to me. It made me, more importantly, effective as a leader; I remember them as a person...And I know at a meta-level, that helps me truly advocate for them better." - Annie Rappeport "If you're able to, before you ask a critical question, take a moment to pause and wipe your brain clean of your preconceived notions. It can make for some incredible moments of mutual understanding. And I think those are important in dialogue and listening scenarios." - Annie Rappeport Notes / Mentions: New Story Leadership: https://www.newstoryleadership.org/our-vision Connect with Annie Rappaport: LinkedIn arappepo@terpmail.umd.edu Connect with Raquel Ark: www.listeningalchemy.com Mobile: + 491732340722 contact@listeningalchemy.com LinkedIn

Er du skuffet over dig selv, fordi du burde have opnået meget mere?

Hey HB's! This here is Part 1 of Eyes of Silver, Eyes of Gold by Ellen O'Connell. We've got an interracial relationship which starts with a traumatic shotgun wedding, a slow-burn romance that pays off (in our next episode), and so much action and world-building we couldn't do it all justice. This book is an excellent western and an excellent romance, but we have some content warnings! There are depictions of assault, sexual assault, animal abuse, racism, and more. Bonus Content: Alaskan minigolf and a hibachi engagement, new time period thanks to HB Fanny - Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman Times!, Melody gets a visceral education about the word mongrel, cowboy leans, Erin has udder questions, Melody brings the club to the country with abs, abs, abs, DICK!, Melody decides that Hapa is an acceptable term to use for the hero, who is half Native American, half white, because that's the accepted and celebrated term she grew up with in Hawaii for mixed-race babies and what she calls her own children, hilarious practical jokes in Dr. Quinn Times, how we imagine Ann C. listens to the podcast, and so much more.

Berzin, AB '74, JD '77 Corporate Board Member Constellation Energy, Ingersoll-Rand, Kindred Healthcare Ann Berzin is a 1974 graduate of The College and a 1977 graduate of the Law School. She worked in New York City as both a law firm associate and later, partner, specializing in municipal finance and asset backed securitization. She left law firm practice to help start a financial guaranty company, FGIC, and was with the company through three successive major changes: its start-up phase with large institutional owners, its later phase as a public company listed on the NYSE, and finally when it became part of a very large corporate organization as a division of the General Electric Company. Within FGIC, she began as its general counsel and member of its risk underwriting committee, later moved from the legal department to head its new product development organization and later became its Chairman and CEO. Feeling acutely the challenges of raising her three children with a husband who did international mergers and acquisitions work and traveled extensively, Ms. Berzin left FGIC and began to join NYSE listed public companies as a director. She currently serves as a director of Ingersoll-Rand, Constellation Energy Group, Inc., and Kindred Healthcare, Inc., and serves on the Audit Committee of each company, as well as on other board committees. She is married and the mother of three children, ages 21, 17, and 14. Ms. Berzin has been actively involved with the University and has served on the Visiting Committee for the College and Student Activities since 2002 and as chair since 2007.
