As Ireland today marks the five-year anniversary of the first Covid-19 lockdown and the widespread shift to remote working, research from Datapac, trusted IT partner for leading Irish organisations, highlights ongoing challenges associated with hybrid work. The research indicates that Irish organisations, having rapidly adopted remote solutions in response to the pandemic, are now increasingly focused on implementing more robust, permanent technologies to support hybrid work long-term. The independent survey, commissioned by Datapac and conducted by Censuswide among 200 IT decision-makers in Ireland, reveals that 96% of organisations are now operating hybrid working models - a permanent legacy of the Covid-19 pandemic. Five years on from the initial shift, organisations continue to face significant challenges, with work-life balance (39%), training and development (36%),cybersecurity (34%), and communication and collaboration (31%) identified as key ongoing issues. 89% of IT decision-makers say they invested in software-as-a-service (SaaS) communication and collaboration tools in response to theCovid-19 pandemic. However, this trend has endured, with 57% of businesses reporting increased investment in these tools since the pandemic, and 31% maintaining their investment levels. Meanwhile, two-thirds (67%) of Irish businesses say they are using Microsoft365 to support collaboration and productivity. The survey also emphasises the importance of having the right digital tools and technologies in place to ensure success in the modern workplace. Some 46% of IT decision-makers would rate their IT infrastructure's ability to support hybrid work as only "somewhat" or "not too" capable. Kevin Hall, Senior Systems Engineer, Datapac, said: "Five years on from Ireland's widespread move to remote working, our research shows that many organisations are still facing substantial challenges in fully embedding hybrid working into their long-term strategies. Initially, organisations rapidly invested in digital tools like Microsoft 365 to maintain operations - but now is a critical time to reassess these investments to ensure they deliver lasting value. "Organisations must evaluate if their current technology genuinely supports their goals, particularly when issues around work-life balance and cybersecurity remain widespread. Rather than simply renewing licenses, businesses need to ensure they're fully leveraging existing investments for maximum efficiency, security, and employee satisfaction. Given how crucial technology now is in the post-pandemic era, partnering with the right IT provider, who can optimise these investments strategically, is essential to remain competitive." Death, taxes and software updates… We deal with a constant stream of updates: Minor, major, N, N-1, N-2. Why do we even have updates? Because software inherently sucks and bad people find ways to exploit the vulnerabilities that they find, or is it that good people find them and disclose them before the bad people get a chance to use them... If simply applying these software updates wasn't hard enough, we also need to understand what devices are eligible for which updates, and may have auditing responsibilities to make decisions as to why and how quickly we need to apply them. Today is World Youth Skills Day and this guest post by Gavin Downey, Senior Systems Engineer, Datapac is very apt. While some people grow up knowing exactly what they want to do in life, most people don't. As one of those people, I followed a somewhat unconventional route into the technology industry. I had an interest in technology from a young age, which began by stealing my older sister's VTech at two. I was always curious to know how things worked, and often broke things so that I could fix them to find out (much to my parents' dismay). Looking back, my primary school was ahead of the curve and in the mid-90s, we were taught how to build a website - which can still be found today. Throughout secondary school, my love for technology grew. I was not academically inclined and found school otherwise boring but, as an Information Age School, it was one of few schools at the time to offer Computer Science as a Leaving Cert subject. I was lucky to have a teacher who nurtured my interest in IT, and I was actively encouraged to take it on. From here, I went on to third level but was unsure of the career path I wanted to take. I took up a portfolio course in photography but soon realised that it was the gadgets and the equipment that piqued my interest more than the photography itself, and made a lateral move into studying multimedia in WIT (now SETU). Part of this course was work placement within a business and, while simply looking for some interview experience, I went along to an interview with Datapac (despite the fact that I had no academic background in IT and, like any good party crasher, without a suit). However, I spoke about my journey so far and mentioned that I had built a server in my spare time. The team was ultimately impressed with this obvious passion for tech and the fact that I had taken on learning materials external to my course. Even though I was in the "wrong" course, I was thrilled to be offered the work placement. It gave me a real insight into a small part of what is such a huge industry. It took almost my entire work experience just to work out what area of IT I was working in. Any time I told someone I was working in IT, they would ask whether I was developing apps. Now, I have been with Datapac for 12 years. In my current role as Senior Systems Engineer, I work closely with customers to develop problem-solving technological solutions to their business challenges. Rather than taking things apart, I'm now building them up. A big misconception is that IT is all about programming and highly-technical software, and I'm keen to show that there's much more to it with many other avenues to pursue. Building a successful career in technology doesn't necessarily need to be a vertical climb and can start in one place while ending up somewhere entirely different. Real-world, hands-on experience is key and I believe you learn the most from those around you, as everyone tackles a problem or comes up with a solution differently. However, certifications are also hugely important in an industry that moves at pace, and I sit more exams now than I did during college. College is the way to get in the door, but industry-recognised certification is the way into the lift to start making your way up to the top floor. Technology is an industry that has been growing exponentially over the past number of years and as it evolves, is a continuous learning curve. To anyone considering a career in tech, my advice is to grasp every opportunity available. Each experience is a learning experience and don't be afraid to take risks - they will ultimately pay off. In this Better Satellite World podcast series, we ask the question: “What would you do if you had the power to make the world a better place during your career?” Joining SSPI's Lou Zacharilla to answer that question in the sixth episode are 3 members of the “20 Under 35” cohort of 2023: Christian Keil, Chief of Staff at Astranis, Sapna Rao, Senior Systems Engineer at Lockheed Martin and Glory Sikka, Technical Program Manager at Maxar. Christian Keil is the Chief of Staff at Astranis, a manufacturer and operator of MicroGEO communications satellites. He leads both the marketing team and the regulatory team, roles in which he is the primary interface between Astranis and the outside world — whether heads of international regulatory agencies or fans on Twitter. After joining Astranis as its third businessperson, Christian played a pivotal role in scaling the company to over 300 employees and a $1.6 billion valuation. Over nearly five years, he has helped by establishing the company's back-end business systems (finance, recruiting, HR, etc.), designing the company's first website, writing the company's first onboarding guide and securing the company's first MOUs from the Department of Defense. Sapna Rao is a Senior Systems Engineer at Lockheed Martin. She joined the company in 2018 after graduating from the Virginia Tech College of Engineering with a degree in Aerospace Engineering and completing an Aerospace Engineering internship with Lockheed Martin. Sapna quickly became integral to many Lockheed Martin initiatives, playing an active role as a Software Systems Engineer, Systems Engineer and Mission Operations Developer on significant programs including Artemis I, Artemis II, the Human Landing System, and the Cryogenic Demonstration Mission. She currently serves as the lead for developing customers and partners from industry and academia to participate in Lockheed Martin's Lunar Mobile Vehicle project. Sapna is also the technical lead for Project Agni, a machine learning and artificial intelligence tool that can detect wildfires using lightning and weather data. She is also leading the generation of mission operations sequences for the Cryogenic Demonstration Mission. This mission is proving out the technology for transferring liquid hydrogen in orbit demonstrating refueling in space. This capability will enable future deep space exploration to Mars and beyond. Glory Sikka is the Deputy Technical Program Manager for NASA's Space Infrastructure Dexterous Robot (SPIDER) project at Maxar. She joined the company in 2018 as a Lead Systems Engineer for the project. SPIDER is an ambitious and complex mission demonstrating a brand-new robotic arm system for in-space assembly of spacecraft. Glory's team is responsible for the end-to-end system, which includes end-over-end walking capability, robot control avionics, situational awareness software, operations console, a precision in-space assembled Ka-band antenna and an in-space manufactured composite antenna boom. She was promoted to her current position in 2021 and is one of the youngest employees to ever reach that level of seniority at the company. Before joining Maxar, Glory spent two years as a Systems Engineer performing robotic maintenance activities on nuclear reactors for the MDA Corporation. She made many training and tool upgrades and improvements while at the company, resulting in greater up-time and reduced risk during maintenance operations. Glory began her career at Solar Ship, where she conducted design, modelling, experimental testing and data analysis for a next-generation airship.

In our latest episode of "Echoes of Valor," we're treated to an engaging, often compelling, conversation that bridges the historical and the contemporary aspects of military aviation as Masters of the Air winds down. Hosted by Colonel Tom Rendall in partnership with The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force and The World War II Foundation, this episode features two great United States Air Force leaders: Brigadier General Paul W. Tibbets IV (USAF Ret.) and Lieutenant Colonel Fred Swan (USAF Ret.). This episode is especially compelling because it carries the legacy of the Mighty Eighth Army Air Forces during World War II, through to the evolution of airpower, and the impact of these experiences on future generations of airmen. Brigadier General Tibbets, with a lineage deeply rooted in our nation's military history, shared insights from his illustrious career, which includes over 4,000 flying hours in B-1 and B-2 bombers. As the grandson of Paul W. Tibbets Jr., the pilot of the Enola Gay during the Hiroshima bombing, General Tibbets carries forward a legacy of critical importance in the realm of nuclear deterrence and strike readiness. Beyond his military career, Tibbets also serves as the President of the 8th Air Force Historical Society. Lieutenant Colonel Fred Swan discusses his experiences drawn from his 20-year service in the Air Force, including a critical mission during Operation Iraqi Freedom. As a weapons systems officer aboard a B-1B Lancer, Swan played a key role in a precision strike aimed at decapitating the Iraqi leadership. Now, as a Senior Systems Engineer for Military Flight Simulation at Rockwell Collins, Colonel Swan contributes to the advancement of today's Air Force pilots, ensuring they are equipped to meet modern warfare's demands. In an October, 1998 file photo, retired Brig. Gen. Paul Tibbets Jr., left, and his grandson, then-Capt. Paul Tibbets IV, fly the last flyable B-29 Superfortress, ‘Fifi,' in Midland, Texas. (Photo courtesy DoD) General Tibbets shared how his grandfather's legacy shaped his approach to leadership within the Air Force, while Swan reflected on how his leadership roles prepared him for high-stakes missions around the world. The preservation of our nation's military history and legacy was another focal point. Both guests discussed their roles in ensuring that the history of the Eighth Air Force and military aviation's technological advancements are shared with new generations. This episode of "Echoes of Valor" serves as a reminder of the enduring legacy of military aviation and its vital role in shaping our past, present, and future.

In this episode, guest co-host Gina Minnette, Vice President of Sales at Keller Schroeder, virtually speaks with our first vendor guest, Chris Pittman, Senior Systems Engineer at Arctic Wolf, about their newest partnership. Chris and Gina also detail the services both Keller Schroeder and Arctic Wolf can provide for you and your company.
When the DarkSide hacking group attacked the Colonial Pipeline, they may have gotten a bit more than they bargained for. Colonial has acknowledged paying $4.4 million in ransom in order to bring their systems back online as quickly as possible. It was a decision they had to make quickly, but had to consider a myriad of variables in the process. Joseph Blount, Colonial CEO stated “I know that’s a highly controversial decision… I didn’t make it lightly. I will admit that I wasn’t comfortable seeing money go out the door to people like this… But it was the right thing to do for the country,” Pundits everywhere weighed in with thoughts about how long the pipeline could be down, the impact on pricing, shortages of petroleum products ranging from gas to heating fuel. Other questions bubbled up as well. How did the do it? Was it politically motivated? How easy would it be for the next attack? Over the last few days, we have seen some pretty remarkable blowback on DarkSide. Even their fellow bad guys don’t want to play with them any more. So… now what? Matt Stephenson welcomes Duke Energy Technology Manager David Lawrence alongside Forescout Principal OT Strategist Brian Proctor and Sr Systems Engineer Shawn Taylor for a lively chat about the attack on Colonial and the impact it may have on the worlds of critical infrastructure and operational technology. This isn’t just another academic discussion of security… we have a harmonica! Seriously… we do… check it out! About David Lawrence David Lawrence is the Tehchnology Manager of the Emerging Tchnology at Duke Energy. There he provides leadership on a portfolio of technologies for the Future Grid, including development of use cases and requirements, architectures and designs, and technology test plans. He works in defining and executing technology evaluations, and providing change management support. David is currently focused on Grid distributed autonomous functions, edge analytics, and security for distributed technologies. He has 38 years of experience in the energy industry. He has worked in research and development and IT management for electric metering, transformer, and switchgear product manufacturing. His roles included embedded systems and protocol development, engineering management, global engineering information systems, manufacturing execution and scheduling systems, product lifecycle management, and IT management. About Brian Proctor Brian Proctor (@brianproctor67) is the Principal OT Strategist at Forescout. He spent the majority of his previous professional life as an ICS/SCADA cybersecurity engineer and cybersecurity team lead working for two progressive California Investor Owned Utilities (IOUs). In joined an ICS security startup which was then acquired by Forescout Technologies. Brian jumped to the vendor side to promote the benefits ICS/SCADA/DCS threat detection, network security monitoring, and visualization capabilities can bring critical infrastructure asset owners. He is passionate about helping the ICS security community in any way possible and trying to make a difference for the greater good of our industry and country. About Shawn Taylor Shawn Taylor (@smtaylor12) is a Senior Systems Engineer at Forescout. He is an accomplished and well-respected Public Speaker and Systems Engineer. With a strong mix of technical acumen, architectural experience, and sales savvy Shawn is a trusted advisor the customers he's worked with over his 20-year career. His background includes Cybersecurity, Biometrics and Identity Management, IT Operations and Service Management and IT Asset Management. As a ForeScout Systems Engineer, Shawn expanded his technical knowledge into cybersecurity, while still leveraging his foundation of IT Operations and Service Management. He is responsible for integrating the ForeScout CounterACT solution with many of the industry-leading Cybersecurity products while in support of sales opportunities. Shawn has spoken at industry events around the country and too many online events to list. Additionally, Shawn helps to drive thought leadership around Forescout and continuous visibility being foundational to enterprise ITSM initiatives by authoring White Papers and blogs. About Matt Stephenson Matt Stephenson (@packmatt73) leads the Social Media team at Forescout, which puts me in front of people all over the world. Prior to joining Forescout, as the host of the InSecurity I have been talking with experts about every corner of the cybersecurity landscape. In 10 years in the world of Data Protection and Cybersecurity I have toured the world extolling the virtues of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and how, when applied to network security, can wrong-foot the bad guys. Prior to the COVID shutdown, I was on the road over 100 days a year doing live malware demonstrations for audiences from San Diego to DC to London to Abu Dhabi to Singapore to Sydney. One of the funniest things I've ever been a part of was blowing up a live instance of NotPetya 6 hours after the news broke... in Washington DC... directly across the street from FBI HQ... as soon as we activated it a parade of police cars with sirens blaring roared past the building we were in. I'm pretty sure they weren't there for us, but you never know... Whether at in person events, live virtual events or podcasting, I get to interview interesting people doing interesting things all over the world of cybersecurity and the extended world of hacking. Sometimes, that means hacking elections or the coffee supply chain... other times that means social manipulation or the sovereign wealth fund of a national economy. Wherever I go, my job is all about talking with the people who build, manage or wreck the systems that we have put in place to make the world go round... If you are listener to Insecurity, there’s great news! An all new show is coming bringing the same kind of energy and array of guests you know and love. Best part? We’re still at the spot. You can find it at Spotify, Apple, Amazon Music & Audible as well as, GooglePlay, Gaana, Himalaya, I Heart Radio and wherever you get your podcasts! Make sure you Subscribe, Rate and Review!

The business world relies on data; there's no escaping it, and there shouldn't be a desire to. Sophisticated data analysis is making business more efficient across the board. On this episode of the MarketScale Industrial IoT Podcast, Lane Leach, Senior Systems Engineer for Pinnacle Business Systems, sat down with host Sean Heath and they discussed the complex challenge of backing up a company's critical systems. The most reliable way to recover from a catastrophic data corruption event is to restore the necessary systems from their backups. As Leach points out, for many companies, those backups simply were not created, whether through oversight or lack of priority. “It doesn't take more than a few minutes of having that be unavailable to be a quick reminder of how important it really is," he said. The stark impact of not having a comprehensive backup plan is clearly reinforced during a crisis, according to Leach. “It could cripple your business to the point where you may have to go out of business,” he said. Leach explained that not all dangers are unforeseen. He described a situation occurring in California to illustrate the need to prepare for expected issues, as well. “Because of fires, you have the major electrical utility provider making a proactive decision, in their case, to have power outages. Well, imagine your business being in one of those impacted and affected counties and not having power for several days,” he said. “Where is your data? Is that something your business can withstand?” The majority of businesses focus on the wrong side of the data backup equation, offered Leach. “If we approach high availability and business continuity from a perspective of the data, and not the equipment, let's start there,” he suggested. “The place to start is: what can I live without?”

Recorded in Washington DC, on December 6, 2018. The orbital space around the earth is increasingly utilized by many actors across the world. Satellites built and launched by governments that strictly served national security and scientific exploration purposes have given way to privately (and even amateur) built and commercially launched space objects. This growth in participation has increased the amount of stakeholders interested in preserving the orbital domain, but it has also increased the amount of satellites and human-generated debris on orbit. As governments, and their myriad agencies, seek to preserve access to the benefits of space, how can collaboration reduce redundancies and avoid the complications of differing definitions, priorities, and data standards? SWF and ESA co-hosted a luncheon panel discussion on international collaboration concerning space safety. Speakers and panelists discussed the roles of governments and industry, technical hurdles, and other challenges. Speakers Keynotes: Johann-Dietrich Wörner, Director General, European Space Agency Patrick Besha, Senior Policy Advisor in the Office of the Administrator at NASA Headquarters Panelists: Jim Cooper, Senior Systems Engineer, Space Situational Awareness, Analytical Graphics, Inc. Todd Harrison, Director, CSIS Aerospace Security Project and Defense Budget Analysis Diane Howard, Professor of Commercial Space Operations/Spaceflight Ops, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Bill Murtagh, Program Coordinator, NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center Charity Weeden, US Managing Representative, Astroscale Moderator: Victoria Samson, Washington Office Director, Secure World Foundation More details can be found at the event page on the SWF website.

A monologue about a relationship turned sour because of a cell phone starts a conversations about technology, social media, and communication. Featuring conversations with a group of high school students from the Academy at Palumbo and tech life expert Stephanie Humphrey. Click here to read a transcript of this episode. We live in a generation where we can’t speak without abbreviation. All this wrong we have we can fix but this time we can’t use auto correct. — from "Better Technology, Horrible Connection" by Brandon Dejesus * * * If you’re reading this, chances are social media was not a huge part of your high school experience. That may be a gross generalization, but let’s go with it. Imagine folding a digital reality into the already fraught social dynamics of middle school and high school. “Do you like me, check ‘yes’ or ‘no’” written on a piece of paper passed across the classroom under the watchful eye of a teacher has nothing on “likes” on Instagram and “streaks” on Snapchat. Yes, streaks. “It’s basically Snapchatting a person every day,” a student at the Academy of Palumbo told us. “It’s like a little fire thing that pops up and it shows how long you guys have been doing that.” Her longest streak? 300 days. Of course not every social media interaction, including streaks, is romantic in nature, but again, let’s go with it. Imagine one day, suddenly, your crush doesn’t Snapchat you. Out of nowhere, your streak is gone, and the relationship is thrown into unfamiliar territory: digital silence. But is that really all that different from what teenagers having been doing since the beginning of time? Tech-life expert Stephanie Humphrey thinks not: “I think the overarching thing that parents and adults need to understand is that nothing has really changed about the way that kids interact with each other on a fundamental level. They just have better tools than we did back in the day if you will.” the conversation Tech-Life Expert Stephanie Humphrey merges her passion for lifestyle media with in-depth tech expertise to show everyday people how empowering, enriching and fun technology can be. Stephanie is driven by the sole purpose of connecting people, particularly those underrepresented in technology, with the tech know-how to transform their worlds. Stephanie is proud to say that she has realized her dream of becoming a nationally syndicated media personality as the current technology contributor to ‘The Harry Show’ , hosted by Harry Connick, Jr, as well as a frequent guest on NewsOne with Roland Martin on TV One. Stephanie has also contributed her tech-life expertise to national media outlets including Al-Jazeera America, HuffPostLive , TheGrio.com , and BlackEnterprise.com. She is an on-air tech contributor to Fox 29’s “Good Day Philadelphia” (WTXF) where she delivers tech news. Stephanie was also the technology writer for EBONY.com and a contributor to EBONY magazine , where she provided readers with the latest in apps, gadgets, and social media. She was the originator of the popular “Tech2** Go” column on TheRoot.com , and was most recently the spokesperson for HP, Inc. on the QVC shopping channel . And Stephanie uses social media to help hundreds of people understand tech basics with her weekly 60-Second Tech Break** on Instagram & Twitter. Clips of some of Stephanie’s work can be viewed on her YouTube channel. Helping students is the passion that drives Stephanie, and she has channeled this motivation into a seminar called ‘Til Death Do You Tweet’. The seminar, tailored to either students or parents, helps them understand the potential negative consequences of online behavior - especially through social media - and gives helpful advice on how young people can maintain a positive reputation in cyberspace. Stephanie is inspired by an innate curiosity to know why things work and an entrepreneurial spirit, which was the spark that started her on her present journey into tech-life media. Her expertise is built upon nearly a decade as a Senior Systems Engineer at Lockheed Martin and engineering degrees from Florida A&M University and the University of Pennsylvania. further reading & resources For tons of resources for parents, guardians, and educators about all things media and technology, check out Common Sense Media. In this episode Ben shares a ton of great IT meeting insights including: Being relentless about defining the business problem itself, and THEN choosing an IT solution to meet the need Making sure that you have left no question unanswered so that there can be no surprises when it comes to implementation Preventing any language barriers between the business owner and the IT technician to ensure that everyone understands each other Making sure the client understands what happens if their system goes down (from fire, flood, failed hardrive etc.) and what steps will be taken if it does How to empathize with each other because everybody has a job to do Why being open and honest is the best way to do business during an IT meeting How to prevent over-spending by establishing clear project requirements How to establish a clear Return-On-Investment from your IT spend, as in, do you want to earn $, reduce costs, or both? Why establishing the right back-up process is so important How to set up high expectations within the IT agreement itself How to not get bamboozled by the latest IT fad and ensure that you only implement what you need ‘When in doubt, do without’ Why IT is not magic, it's just engineering Why IT should be treated like a marriage (because often you'll be spending more time with your IT guy than your spouse anyway) Why it is critical to have the right people in an IT meeting and to follow a clear meeting agenda Ben's Top 3 IT Meetings Suggestions Be clear about the business problem you are trying to solve, and THEN figure out the appropriate IT solution Be calm during a meeting with your IT provider and remember that everyone has a job to do Clearly understand what Return-On-Investment you want from your IT solution, and don't overspend on bells and whistles that you don't need About Ben Habing Ben has been wielding a keyboard since he was nine. He has spent almost 20 years working in IT, holding various roles from Systems Administrator, Senior Systems Engineer, Infrastructure Architect, IT Manager, Technical Process Manager, Director of Strategy & Business Development to most recently CEO.
