She resonates with this man in Mark's Gospel who boldly heals in Christ's name while the insiders try to invalidate his ministry. But the hospitality of Jesus is surprising, inclusive, and reciprocal. About the healer and about Katelyn, Jesus says “they belong, they're doing my work.” To be a Jesus follower is to let go of power and ego and control, and to embrace the subversive leadership and hospitality of Jesus.Resources + Social Media Handles:Katelyn on FBKatelyn on IG here and hereKatelyn's WebsiteAll of Jen Hale Christy's LinksWhat to do next:Join our monthly letter listJoin our Patreon CommunityShare this episode! Connect with JenShouts of gratitude to our patron partners!Sarah P, Steve G, Tom B, Sue CSupport the show

And the funny thing is, when you think about modern-day missionaries, they have a really hard time getting funding to go to places that may not be receptive. But with Jonah--he knows that they’ll turn from their ways, that they’ll repent and want to come back to YHWH. There’s no question in his mind that they’ll accept his message. He just doesn’t want to deliver it. It’s not fair. The first three chapters especially--though dark and haunting--contain the most beautiful story of love ever. It is not the story of Hosea loving Gomer despite her prostitution. It is the timeless story of the persons and people of God believing themselves to be faithful to YHWH even as we chase false lovers and the unremitting steadfast commitment of YHWH to the bride.Resources + Social Media Handles:PorchSwing Ministries, Inc.Reach out to Christine: Christine@PorchSwingMinistries.org All of Jen Hale Christy’s LinksWhat to do next:Join our monthly letter listJoin our Patreon CommunityShare this episode! This sermon explores the relationship between inclusive, diverse community, and God's name "El Roi" (the God who sees me). In order to create a thriving, diverse community, the church must be committed to seeing others and including them, much like God does throughout the Bible. S5E4: “The Gospel According to Ruth” with Claire Davidson FrederickWednesday, July 22, 2020PreacHer PodcastPreacHer: Claire Davidson FrederickSummary: Adapted from a previously preached homily on the Book of Ruth, this sermon takes listeners along the journey of two widows: Naomi (from Bethlehem in Judah) and Ruth (a foreigner from Moab). This tragic and ultimately hope-filled story gives Bible-believing people permission to both lament our misfortune and believe that God may yet have something more in store for us. The good news Frederick expounds is that God often works through the marginalized, the scandalized, and the traumatized to bring about God's ultimate redemptive purposes. God even works through an outsider like Ruth to facilitate the redemption of those inside the covenant community. S4E10: “Fear and Faithfulness: Paul in Acts 18:1-11” with Cheryl CashWednesday, June 17, 2020PreacHer PodcastPreacHer: Cheryl CashSummary: Acts 18 marks the conclusion of Paul's second evangelistic journey as well as the beginning of the well-storied Corinthian church. One might expect this beginning to be heroically auspicious as it derives from the ministry of the most beloved Paul. However, this particular beginning emerges far more relatable from the awareness of a suffering journey and Paul's subsequent response. Join us to hear God's reaction to fear in the life of Paul. From within these eleven verses emerges a focal point of Paul's service to the Corinthian believers that continues to resonate through Paul's words into our lives today: "So I am well pleased with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, and with difficulties, for the sake of Christ; for when I am weak [in human strength], then I am strong [truly able, truly powerful, truly drawing from God’s strength]." 2 Corinthians 12:10 (Amplified Bible) Resources + Social Media Handles:Cheryl’s WebsiteCheryl on IGCheryl on FBCheryl on TwitterAll of Jen Hale Christy’s LinksWhat to do next:Join our monthly letter listJoin our Patreon CommunityShare this episode! And the thing is, all those deeply-held convictions that never materialize in tangible action are dangerous. Faith without works isn’t just dead--it’s deadly. It’s poisonous and tricky and can lull us into a state of being half-asleep where we think our thinking alone is enough. It’s not. S4E6: “A Tale of Three Conversions” with Dr. Sara BartonWednesday, May 20, 2020PreacHer PodcastPreacHer: Dr. Sara BartonSummary: When Luke constructed Acts 10 and 11, he very specifically decided to tell a story twice from two different perspectives, the narrator and Peter. The story is so central to Acts – and to the Gospel in the big picture - that it needed to be double-underlined for us. Think of it as a form of highlighting before highlighters existed. So, we pay double attention because Luke says we should, and the point is that God shows no favoritism. The goal of the blessing and call of Abram all the way back in Genesis 12 is coming to fruition as God's work in history blesses all people in all the world. The first Jesus followers had to figure out how to catch up with God’s purposes, so here we have an example of how that occurred. But also, there’s this minor character who might actually be the hero in hiding. All of this has us asking ourselves: whose voice have we discounted, or silenced in proclaiming the good news that God is still in this resurrection business? When our chains fall off, will we choose to get up and believe the truth that God is resurrecting us and freeing us from a life of fear? How many times have we chosen to stay put instead of following the unexpected way out? God is at work among us. May we have eyes to see it, and feet to follow. Never before has the future been so uncertain. And what better time to be dwelling in the book of Acts--a book which retells the exciting days and weeks and months after Jesus was raised from the dead and up into heaven. A book that excitedly shares the Good News that God has conquered every sickness and even death. Stories that portray ordinary and unlikely people being the ones to carry the message of Jesus to the ends of the Earth. These people were living in unprecedented times. The world as they knew it had been turned upside down and was no more. And they had to figure out how to move forward. How to establish new rhythms and find their new normal. May we find ourselves in these stories as we locate ourselves in God’s story.I believe in us as humans. It’s more important than ever that we show up and do the work that is ours to do. The thing we were created for. Resources + Social Media Handles:All of Jen Hale Christy’s LinksWhat to do next:Join our monthly letter listJoin our Patreon CommunityShare this episode! Rather, he retells Israel's history in order to expose their pattern of rejecting prophets and leaders. In a moment of radical truth-telling, Stephen beseeches the crowd to break the cycle of their ancestors, and to consecrate their hearts to God. In this sermon, I invite Stephen to challenge us, as we consider why we have rejected the prophets and truth-tellers of our time, and how we might repent.
