Claude Baudoin, co-chair of several OMG task forces, including the AI Platform Task Force, discussed the timeliness of AI standards. He highlighted the need for standards to address interoperability and portability issues in AI, citing examples like the portability of neural network models and standardization of image classifiers. Baudoin emphasized OMG's open process for determining standards through RFIs, contrasting it with ISO's more guideline-focused approach. He encouraged active participation in OMG to shape standards, offering a competitive advantage in the market. OMG's efforts aim to provide concrete, technical standards, unlike ISO's general advice. Action Items [ ] Issue a request for information to determine needed AI standards. [ ] Get involved in OMG's standards development process by becoming a member and attending meetings. Outline Introduction and Participant Roles Karen Quatromoni introduces herself as the Director of Public Relations for Object Management Group (OMG) and welcomes Bill Hoffman, the OMG CEO and chairman. Claude Baudoin introduces himself as the owner and principal at cebe IT and Knowledge Management, based in San Rafael, California. Claude mentions his extensive background in software engineering, IT management, and his long association with OMG, including his roles in various task forces and working groups. The focus of the podcast is on AI standards, and Claude is co-chairing the AI Platform Task Force for OMG. Timing of AI Standards Bill Hoffman discusses the rapid evolution of AI and the timeliness of discussing AI standards. Claude shares an anecdote from 1993 about the premature standardization debate and how it eventually led to the development of the Unified Modeling Language (UML). The fundamental issue is that lack of standards can lead to significant time wasted on interoperability and portability issues, hindering innovation. The goal is to identify when standards are needed to allow developers to focus more on innovation rather than technical challenges. Examples of AI Standards Needed Claude explains the current work on portability of neural network models with the help of Zephyr Solutions. The challenge is that neural network models cannot be easily moved from one platform to another due to the lack of a standard representation. Another area of interest is image classifiers, where there is a need for a standard to handle large datasets and descriptions of images. Other potential standards include metadata for data sets and semantic tagging of information, which are widely needed. Determining AI Standards Bill asks how OMG determines which AI standards are needed. OMG has an open process that involves issuing requests for information (RFIs) to gather input from the general public, not just OMG members. In 2019, NIST issued an RFI, but it was five years old and did not address the current landscape, including the rise of large language models. OMG is considering issuing a new RFI to gather more up-to-date input on needed standards. OMG's Approach to AI Standards Bill inquires about how OMG's efforts differ from other organizations like ISO and IEEE. ISO's standards are more like guidelines, while OMG focuses on more precise, technically detailed standards. OMG collaborates with ISO and IEEE, feeding specifications to ISO and having a liaison with IEEE's project group on AI terminology and data formats. OMG's work is more concrete and provides specific models and formats for users and developers. Getting Involved in OMG ...

Thank you for tuning into the SeaBros Fishing Podcast! On this episode we were excited to host Ben Gahagan and Bill Hoffman from the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF). Ben Gahagan is the Recreational Fisheries Program Leader at DMF.  In his career he has served on multi-jurisdictional technical committees, stock assessment teams, and used a variety of techniques to understand the migratory movements and stock composition of fish as small as river herring and as large as Atlantic bluefin tuna. Ben is a lifelong angler and outdoorsman, he has been lucky enough to spend many hours pursuing those same fish and many other finned, furred, and feathered critters.Bill Hoffman is a senior fisheries biologist for the state, where he has been working for 26 years. He manages the Fisheries Research and Monitoring project which includes leading a team that collects critical data, both at sea and dockside, for a variety of Massachusetts commercial fisheries to support stock assessment analysis and fisheries management decisions. On the fisheries research side, Bill specializes in tagging fish using acoustic telemetry.  He has conducted multiple studies focusing on questions that range from understanding basic fish migration patterns of cod and striped bass to fishery-induced mortality for striped bass, cod, cusk, and haddock. When he is not at work, he can be found on his own boat fishing for giant bluefin tuna or in a tree archery hunting for whitetail deer on the Northshore of Massachusetts and in New Hampshire.  Last fishing season we collaborated with Ben, Bill, and the rest of their team, in helping them collect data for their recent efforts in analyzing post release mortality for striped bass. In doing this, we are working towards establishing healthy release best practices for this species.  Ben and Bill are developing these resources for recreational anglers that target striped bass and they include proper fish handling upon landing, how to use circle hooks, fishing tactics, etc.In this conversation we discuss this research program and our fishing trips from last season. We also discuss other ongoing research projects for striped bass and for several other species, including Atlantic mackerel and bluefin tuna. As always, our guests share a lot of stories, laughs, and some incredible knowledge. We hope you enjoy this podcast as much as we did!Stay Tight,The Sears BrothersSponsors, Information, and Links from this podcast episode:Guests:Ben GahaganBill Hoffmanben.gahagan@mass.govbill.hoffman@mass.govhttps://www.mass.gov/info-details/striped-bass-researchmass.gov/striper-plateSeaBros Fishing WebsiteSeaBros Swag (Tuna Mark Patch Hats)Mass Bay Guides Ultimate Fishing Adventures @massbayguidesAfuera Coffee Company "Do Good And Go Afuera!" At this point, his family members aren't interested in running his extermination business so he shares other available avenues for business transition. In their conversation, they talk about the 3 main stakeholders you need keep in mind when selling your company, why being transparent with your employees makes for a smoother transition, and why Bill always picks up the phone. Bill Hoffman is the CEO of Hoffman's Exterminating which has been going on for over 31 years. Tune in to find out how his exterminating company ended up partnering with the Philadelphia Eagles in an unlikely turn of events.  Tune in until the end to learn:  The #1 thing you must do before selling your business Why it pays to help your competitors  How to make a business sale as smooth as possible OR Why telling your employees your plans to sell is better for you   Timestamps [00:56] Who is Bill Hoffman? [04:08] How Bill got started in extermination  [06:08] How he grew by helping the competitor [09:12] Selling your business as part of your retirement plan.  OR Keeping your customers, employees, and yourself in your business transition plan. [11:39] Why do business owners hide business sales from their employees? [15:09] What's the best way to value a business? [40:46] Success is transitioning your business 3 Key Highlights Every business transitions at one point or another. You have to have a plan for what you will do when you transition your business. You have to have a plan for your customers, your employees, and yourself.  Nobody likes change. There is a lot of uncertainty and uneasiness that can come with selling a business. It can make you reluctant to keep your employees in the loop. If you get buy-in from your employees early, you will have a much smoother transition.  When selling your business, you have to gradually first become operationally irrelevant. If you don't do that, your business will fall apart without you and investors will no longer be interested in buying your company. Build a self-managing company. You don't want your buyer to think you need them to survive, you want to have power.  Useful Links Connect with Michael Pallozzi: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michaelpallozzihfm/ (LinkedIn) | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwPUUK47XQw&ab_channel=HFMInvestmentAdvisors%2CLLC (Get a 401k tip in under 2 minutes (video)) Like what you've heard… Learn more about HFM https://hfmadvisors.com/working-with-hfm (HERE) Schedule time to speak with us https://calendly.com/hfminquirycall/360 (HERE) Open an HFM Ignite account https://hfmadvisors.com/ignite (HERE)

Welcome to Episode 11 of One Step Beyond, a show that encourages you to take a step outside your comfort zone and enrich your life.Ten years ago, Bill Hoffman was just another busy, middle aged, married 40-something father carrying an extra 40lbs of weight around his midriff. He hadn’t run since high school, and had barely engaged in any other athletic activity during those 25 years either. Then he read Born To Run, the best-selling book by Christopher McDougall, and took more than a step outside of his comfort zone. He took a step outside his shoes as well. Inspired by the notion of minimalist footwear as practiced by the Tarahumara Indians of the Copper Canyons, the featured 'Hidden Tribe' of Born To Run, Bill bought a pair of Vibram Five Fingers, and started running again, a mile or so at a time, alternating with his bare feet, and before he knew it, he had qualified for the Boston Marathon.Bill has now run over 40 marathons and ultra-marathons, including Boston five times, and the feared and revered Leadville 100 twice. Not once has he competed in "normal" shoes. He does all his running now in the open Luna Sandals, the Tarahumaras' huaraches as made by another star of Born To Run, Barefoot Ted. On the last Friday of August, I drove to meet Bill at the Albany Pine Bush Preserve and try the sandals myself. While we ran together, Bill explained why shoes are not good for you and how anyone can follow in his own footsteps to athletic success - unshod, that is. We also talked the importance and influence of Born To Run, the madness that is the Leadville 100... and Barefoot Ted himself.Resources for this episode:(All links can be found at https://shows.acast.com/onestepbeyond/episodes/ep-11-take-a-step-outside-your-shoes)Bill Hoffman's TED Talk, From Couch to Ultra Marathon Bill's article on the Luna Sandals blog. There is a big barrier to entry, right? But the kid really loves baseball. He can go play little league or he can go play in an adult rec league. He is still playing baseball. He is doing what he loves.  There is a barrier to entry to get on the Outdoor Channel, but you are never going to get to the Outdoor Channel if you don't play little league first." ## More About My Guest: ## If you took a guy who loves to hunt and fish and then made him a professional magician with a decade long career in law enforcement, who also enjoys his work as an ordained wedding officiant you would have my guest today.  In addition to working in the outdoors industry with Fromtheblind.com, he has written for a few major publications and he is an Amazon.com best selling author with The Twins of Prey book series.
