In this episode of Clocking Out, we dive into the inspiring journey of Amber Williams, a Brooklyn native with deep Caribbean roots. Growing up in a vibrant immigrant community, education and ambition were ingrained in her from a young age. Though she initially aspired to be a lawyer, a pivotal summer program introduced her to the world of television, setting her on a path toward media and storytelling.Amber studied Film & Television at Hobart College, gained hands-on experience through internships, and landed a job in media advertising post-graduation. However, she craved creativity beyond spreadsheets, leading her to a career transition into production. By leveraging LinkedIn and networking at film sets, she transitioned into freelancing on major productions like Billions and Clifford the Big Red Dog. Yet, she knew there was still something missing. She wanted to be the person that creates the stories. From then on, that became her long term goal.To make those dreams a reality, she applied to NBCUniversal's East Coast Page Program and was accepted. Through that program, she landed a role at Peacock, where she helped launch key marketing campaigns. Around the same time, she earned her MFA in Screenwriting at Emerson College, further solidifying her path as a storyteller. After three years, Peacock let her go, but that hasn't stopped her from pursuing her ultimate goal: writing and creating authentic stories for television.Amber's journey is a testament to resilience, strategic career transitions, and the power of pursuing your passion. Episode 66: Brett Riley. Very happy to get the chance to have Long Island University Head Coach Brett Riley hop on the prohockeypod this week. When you think of the Riley family, you think of hockey and coaching. Brett's dad, Rob, had a long career in coaching at West Point and is now a scout for the Colorado Avalanche. Brett's uncle, Brian, is in his 33rd and final season of coaching at West Point. Brett's grandfather, Jack, was the Head Coach at West Point for 36 years. Safe to say that Brett didn't have a choice but to get into hockey at a young age. Brett was a D3 athlete, like myself, who went to Hobart College. Funny enough, we actually played a few times against each other. Brett was always eager to coach and was even commuting during his senior year to recruit players for his US Prep school team, that he was becoming the HC for next season. He has always enjoyed building programs from the ground up and the effort that goes into doing so. He first did this at D3 Wilkes University and has been doing it for the past 5 years at D1 Long Island University. He talks a lot of pride in his "blue collar" teams and never being outworked. That is something I respect. Honestly, after talking to Brett and hearing him speak about hockey and his family background, it is no surprise that he has risen up the coaching ranks so quickly. If you want to see what it takes to rise quickly and be a student of the game, then this episode is a must listen. Hope you enjoy!
Explore creative community transformation with teaching artist Jeff Mather as he shares stories of art, collaboration, and social change in education.Jeff Mather's work as a teaching artist and public art digital storytelling alchemist underscores the vital role of art in fostering community resilience and engagement. The conversation with Bill Cleveland reveals how, despite the challenges posed by recent global events, Mather remains optimistic about the transformative potential of creative collaborations. By reflecting on his experiences in various educational and community settings, he illustrates how art can bridge divides, empower youth, and reinvigorate spaces that have been overlooked or abandoned. His dedication to involving students in the artistic process not only cultivates their creativity but also instills a sense of agency and responsibility for their environment. The episode captures the essence of Mather's philosophy: art is not merely an aesthetic endeavor but a powerful tool for social change. Mather recounts the impactful project in West Baltimore, where he worked with local youth to design and install an environmental sculpture in a park that had long been neglected. This initiative not only beautified the area but also engaged the community in a dialogue about safety, ownership, and the importance of reclaiming shared spaces. Mather's insights into the dynamics of teaching and collaboration highlight the necessity of recognizing and valuing each participant's unique contributions, which ultimately enriches the artistic outcome.Furthermore, the discussion delves into the challenges and rewards of community-based art practices, particularly in relation to trust-building and navigating complex social landscapes. Mather emphasizes the importance of entering communities with humility and a willingness to learn, rather than imposing external solutions. His experiences with Alternate Roots showcase the power of grassroots movements in advocating for social and economic justice through art. As the episode unfolds, it becomes evident that Mather's work embodies a vision of art as a communal endeavor—one that celebrates diversity, fosters connection, and cultivates a shared sense of purpose in navigating the challenges of our times.Key Moments00:18 The Turning Point: Reflections on Change and Future Challenges00:35 Reflections on Creative Change Agents13:59 Alternate ROOTS and Community Engagement22:55 The Impact of Community Engagement in Public Art31:14 Engaging with Community Through Art40:03 The Impact of Art and CommunityBIOJeff is a community-based public artist and teaching artist in Georgia, (and South Carolina and Massachusetts and Utah), for over 30 years. This week's podcast guest Mattie Mead competed in a 2013 pitch competition at Hobart College in Geneva, New York. He had just shared his vision for a company that made building materials out of hemp. “One of the judges for the contest said, ‘So let me get this straight, you're looking to build houses out of a Schedule 1 substance?' “And I said, well, ‘Yes.' “Today it's a Schedule 1 substance, but in five or so years it's going to be federally legal,” Mead said. “And I want to be on the forefront of what I believe to be an emerging industry.” Indeed, industrial hemp was legalized with the 2018 Farm Bill and today Mead is co-founder and CEO of Hempitecture, a building materials manufacturing company in Idaho. “We're focused on what we believe are the most truly sustainable building materials on the planet,” Mead said. “And as you could probably guess by our name, our not-so-secret ingredient is hemp fiber.” Hempitecture makes several construction materials from hemp, including HempWool thermal insulation, a plant-based alternative to fiberglass insulation. Another product line is FiberPad, a hemp-fiber-based, non-toxic carpet underlayment. Hempitecture brought a state-of-the-art manufacturing center online in early 2023 in Jerome, Idaho. The company sources hemp fibers from Montana and Alberta, but recently a processor in Idaho — Whitefield Global — has come into operation, providing Hempitecture with fibers produced by farmers in Idaho. “Seeing this kind of movement towards industrial hemp cultivation in the Rocky Mountain West — and seeing it move closer and closer to our manufacturing plant — is really encouraging,” Mead said. He also talks about his company's latest round of fundraising. “We opened up our second round to the public on March 18. And within the first day of going public, we've put $740,000 of reservations in this investment round,” he said. He also speaks about expanding Hempitecture by building a second manufacturing facility in upstate New York. “As we look towards expansion on the East Coast, we want to use our Idaho facility as a blueprint and replicate that blueprint nationally,” Mead said. Also on this podcast episode, we hear from Morris Beegle, founder of the NoCo Hemp Expo taking place in Colorado in April. We'll have a handful of news nuggets as well, including a story about kitty litter made from hemp. Anthony Hobaica has always been relentlessly competitive. He graduated at the top of his class in 2009 from Hobart College as a three-year starter as a running back. He quickly came up the ranks, holding world records in both raw-wrapped and sleeve categories, including three overall Arnold XPC Championships and totaling ten times his body weight in 181 and 198 classes. In the 2017 Animal Cage, he completed an expo lift (one squat, one bench, and one dead), totaling ten times his body weight in less than 60 seconds. Anthony has always been a fan of the entire sport of powerlifting, so in 2020 he transitioned into equipped lifting with his eyes set on becoming the lightest man in history to squat over 1000 pounds. In September 2022, he successfully squatted 1010 pounds at 191.5. When Anthony isn't competing, he works as a District Sales Manager in the construction industry, overseeing 60+ employees in Nevada, Utah, and Arizona. The Book Report Series: Highlights of some very great books about American history. A list of books everyone should have in their libraries. “They Were White and They Were Salves” is a thoroughly researched challenge to the conventional historiography of colonial and industrial labor, a stunning journey into a hidden epoch, the slave trade in Whites, hundreds of thousands of whom were kidnapped, chained, whipped and worked to death in the American colonies and during the Industrial Revolution. This is a chronicle that has never been fully told, part of a vital heritage that has until now comprised the dustiest shelf in the darkest corner of suppressed history. “Their bodies and souls are used as if hell commenced here and only continued in the world to come.” Thomas Montgomery, in a letter to the Lords of Trade and Plantations, on the suffering of White slaves, August 3, 1688. Honestly, that really, if I had to celebrate my real connection to it. He had two weeks of vacation every year and those would be dedicated to taking his three crazy sons out. When he picked up his first camera I had a Pentax K 2000, so if that doesn't date me, I don't know what does. But my getting into photography, was really just my passion thing. It hit me really, I think in college, when, you're exposed to a lot of courses. I went to a small liberal arts college in upstate New York, Hobart College. And I majored in environmental studies, and wildlife management. So sort of this odd combination I had to petition the school cause they had nothing around wildlife. I took one photography class and you take that black-and-white photography class everybody takes to get your entry-level photo class. I got, I think a B, but I remember that I didn't like any of the history stuff. I just wanted to shoot the camera. That's all I wanted to do. The start of GLP Film I pretty much was doing freelance. I did some independent projects with organizations, some nonprofits out of Seattle, and one in particular called the Tibetan Nuns Project. It was a small NGO. They had a project on the Tibetan side of India. So I went there for three consecutive years just to shoot their calendar. They had an annual calendar, but that was one example of a project. But more importantly, I did a lot of solo work. When I was in Seattle, I went to grad school. At the University of Washington, I actually got into the business. So I got an MBA, which again, that was the last thing I thought I'd ever get, but I got an MBA and, after school, I started with a company, in the digital content space, in the outdoor industry. The inspiration for GLP Films I had these three different sorts of stools and the legs of the stool that I like to look at. One was this real passion for conservation. I had a real passion for the outdoors. I worked for the Appalachian Mountain Club for five years. Worked for nonprofits like The Nature Conservancy. So I had a real interest in and passion and conservation. That was one stool. I think the other was obviously media, I started in photography and got into video. I think on the video side, the turning point for me was Al Gore's Inconvenient Truth. Seeing that in 2006, I think it was the number-one at that time documentary film of all time. And if you can take a slideshow and make it the highest-grossing documentary film, there's something there. And, it really was just the power of video. And, it really was just the power of video. And I saw that and I used it to go to the Seattle International Film Festival every year. And I would go to all the documentary films on international. I would just go myself, sit in the back row, buy all these random tickets, looking for the most far-flung countries in the world. So I got really into documentaries. So that was the second leg. And then the third leg was business. That entrepreneurship bug hit me as a young kid. And I ended up getting a graduate degree. I studied in India and South Africa and Brazil while going to business school. And so for me I wanna combine these three components. Rob's advice for folks that want to get into photography or shoot films? I will say though, in hindsight, because I do know a lot of very successful photographers is . . . the classic . . . focus on what you do. Find your niche and become the absolute best in what you do. Just make sure that you love what you're doing. Because at the end you're gonna work more as an entrepreneur or small business. You're gonna have to be a go-getter. And, it's tough to have that energy if you don't like what you're doing. So just make sure that you focus on whatever your niche is and your specialty. And become the absolute best, just make sure you love it. And then I think the other point though, is network network network, really leverage your local regional, national, global audience because that really is going to be the key to how you get your content out there, your work out there, your expertise out there for others to pick you up. Trade Show Banner Sustainability or Bust Daily Routines My big thing is getting outdoors. So, I run and have Qualified for Boston twice. So I'm a big runner. I love to bike, I'm in Kennebunkport, Maine. So, I'm right along the coast, I feel very, very lucky where we are. And so I'm running, biking, walking, every day. Favorite Books I'm more on the newspaper side than the magazine side. I would say on the newspaper side New York times. I mean some of the best editorial content globally. Magazines- I've always been a fan of Outside. Expedition Books- Galen Rowell Favorite piece of outdoor gear MSR Whisper Light Sustainability Storytelling Competition GLP Films has just launched its " sustainability storytelling competition" It's a global competition open to all industries, not just tourism. Jim Calder has lived a lacrosse life. His experiences as a player, fan, coach, and parent are the stuff of legends. I recently sat down with Jim to discuss his latest book, Tales of a Lacrosse Troubadour. About Jim Jim Calder, born in Canada but raised in New York, grew up as one of the only Canadians to play purely field lacrosse. He took his talents to Hobart College where he was a 2x All-American and 2x National Champion. In 1978 he would be named to the Canadian national field team, a team that would win the World Championships. Calder's accomplishments in the game are to long to list but the fact that he is in both the Canadian Lacrosse Association and Hobart College's Hall of Fames tells you just how special his life have been. About the Book This is Jim's third book related to lacrosse, following in the footsteps of "Lacrosse the Ancient Game" and "Women Play Lacrosse". The purpose and theme of the book are best described in an excerpt from Jim below: Jim CalderThis book is a product of the pandemic. We all miss our sport and it has been painful to deal with the realities of our time and what they've done to the game being played. Hopefully, we are almost through the worst. There has been a positive side as I was able to devote hundreds and hundreds of hours to the project. It kept me occupied when I needed something to help me deal with the drudgery of the days. It has been medicine. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lax-all-stars/message

“My advice is to always find a way to take a good step forward.” To kick off 2022, Dr. Mike Roussell joins Jason for Episode 054 focusing on nutrition. Dr. Mike consults on health, nutrition, and performance for a range of clientele from professional athletes, to celebrities, to Fortune 500 executives. “With a passion for nutrition rooted in sport,” he is a speaker, podcaster and author who breaks down complicated nutrition ideas and principles to easily digestible, immediately actionable steps. While he is a “diet agnostic” Dr Mike lays out early his six pillars of nutrition, and why he focuses on the “dos” instead of the “don'ts.” He talks about why making mental shifts -- and having supportive community -- are more critical to health and performance success than the perfect plan. He returns to a common Special Forces theme of “brilliance in the basics” and remembering you're one meal (or even bite) away from being back on track towards your goals. After covering the first steps and creating a foundation of nutritional health, Jason and Dr. Mike take it to a higher level of performance and cover a lot of ground from hydration, to eating to optimize recovery, his “calorie vibe” approach, rucking nutrition, the pitfalls of food marketing and the global problems in health literacy, and even the amazingness of Jason's beloved PB&J. Throughout he advocates for “struggling through to make the new habit part of our lives.” Dr. Mike holds a degree in biochemistry from Hobart College and a doctorate in nutrition from Pennsylvania State University. He is well published both in academic circles and also has over 500 articles in places like Men's Health and SHAPE magazines. He also walks the talk as a longtime athlete and weightlifter, and rucker since 2016. Hello, and welcome to This Day in History. Here's what happened on January 23rd. Studies show that women are now becoming doctors in greater numbers than men, but that was far from the case on this day in 1849, when Elizabeth Blackwell became the first woman physician in the United States. Born in Great Britain, Blackwell attended what is now Hobart College, in New York state, and later became a professor of gynecology, a field of medicine she helped to establish.

Vigor Life Podcast · EP122: The Art Of Nutrition Coaching And Getting Clients Results w/ Dr. Mike Roussell Dr. Mike Roussell is one of my go-to people when I have questions about nutrition. Dr. Mike is famous for transforming complex nutritional concepts into practical nutritional habits that his clients can use to ensure permanent weight loss and long-lasting health. He holds a degree in biochemistry from Hobart College and a doctorate in nutrition from Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Mike’s academic background, coupled with his broad range of experience consulting with pharmaceutical and food companies, medical schools, top-rated fitness facilities, professional athletes, and individual clients, gives him the unique ability to translate scientific findings into relevant, understandable, and actionable strategies that get results. As a scientist, his research has been published multiple times in the world's premiere clinical nutrition journal, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Dr. Mike oversees the optimization of the health, nutrition, and performance of a range of clientele from professional athletes, to celebrities, to Fortune 500 executives. He is also a sought after continuing educator, speaking across the country to physicians, dieticians, nurses, and other health professionals on the most recent advances in the nutritional treatments for cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, and weight loss. In this episode, we dive into the art of nutrition coaching and what really works in the real world. We break down principles, science, and examples of client obstacles and how to help overcome them. IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN How Mike discovered the importance of the consultation and the art of coaching and why it was so different from so many “studies in the lab.” From bodybuilding to sports nutrition, Mike had a skewed view of what would work in the real world with real people (especially in the busy New York culture). His dives into why. Why writing for T-Nation and diving into the minutia of nutrition doesn’t carry over to people training 3x a week for 5 minutes working to change their body. How Mike would discover the truth from clients in the last 5 minutes of an hour-long consultation and how it helped him hone his skill as a coach. What is “Nutrition Speed Dating’ and how Mike was able to learn to build rapport and discover the obstacle in the way of people's success. A key principle to getting results: discovering where the client sees themselves and where they are trying to go. The reason you can’t shock clients with huge changes when they think they are doing ok (this is KEY with many clients, tune in!) When to coach with more structure and challenge, and when to reel it back in; and the reason why Mike will fly across the country to meet clients face-to-face. Asking questions to discover where the client’s skillsets are, is critical to being able to give them the best “next steps.” How you may be setting up clients for failure when giving your “expert advice” – Mike and I give some must-listen examples Why Mike walks away from consultations and gives his subconscious a day or so before giving nutrition recommendations. When to NOT give people many options/choices when it comes to nutrition coaching. The reason Mike doesn’t like Intermittent Fasting and does NOT recommend it to his clients. What Mike thinks about tracking, which way is best, and is there a best way (and for who). What the “3-2-1 method” is and why this simple method works for a lot of clients. The 6 pillars of nutrition that are the foundation of a quality, healthy, sustainable diet. When to eat carbs and some deeper points on the timing of carbs (including circadian rhythm meal timing). Food as a social connector and how to make sure you implement it into coaching as a source of fulfillment and happiness (and how this makes you happier and healthier...

A SERVING OF PISTACHIOS HAS AS MUCH PROTEIN AS AN EGG. AND LIKE EGGS, MEAT, FISH AND DAIRY, THEY’RE A COMPLETE PROTEIN The Food and Drug Administration defines a “complete” protein as a food that contains adequate amounts of all nine essential amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein, and while the body can naturally produce 11 of them, there are nine essential amino acids the body cannot produce and must obtain from food. The protein quality of pistachios was assessed for the first time at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. The study determined roasted pistachios contain all of the 9 essential amino acids necessary for supporting growth and maintaining health for those 5 years and older, therefore, they are a “Complete Protein.” Ric speaks with renowned nutrition consultant and author Dr. Mike Roussell and find out about the new study that shows that pistachios are a complete protein. Dr. Mike will also share with viewers why pistachios are the complete protein they need, especially while sheltering in place. He can also discuss the health and fitness benefits of pistachios. Pistachios join the ranks of a small number of plant proteins such as quinoa, chickpeas, and soybeans that have become popular among vegetarians and consumers who wish to move away from animal proteins. But pistachios are the only plant-based protein that is a complete protein. Complete Protein Benefits of Eating Pistachios: -They provide a convenient complete protein snack that portable and doesn’t require cooking. -No need to combine two or more incomplete sources of protein. Now simply eat pistachios. -They provide a meat alternative for vegans and vegetarians. -They are a good cholesterol-free source of fiber, antioxidants, lutein, potassium, healthy fats and B-vitamins. Dr. Mike Roussell is known for transforming complex nutritional concepts into practical nutritional habits that his clients can use to ensure permanent weight loss and long-lasting health. Dr. Roussell holds a degree in biochemistry from Hobart College and a doctorate in nutrition from Pennsylvania State University. His academic background, coupled with a broad range of experience from consulting with pharmaceutical and food companies, top-rated fitness facilities, professional athletes and individual clients, gives him the unique ability to translate scientific findings into relevant, understandable and actionable strategies that get results. He serves on the advisory board of and writes the monthly “Ask the Nutrition Know-It-All” column for Men’s Health Magazine. In addition, having published over 300 articles on health and nutrition, Dr. Roussell has authored and/or served as the consulting nutritionist for 9 books about health, nutrition and weight loss. This is the Q&A portion of Matthew Lamanna's talk, The Origin of Modern Birds. Matthew C. Lamanna, Ph.D. Assistant Curator Section of Vertebrate Paleontology Carnegie Museum of Natural History Birds are today's most diverse group of land-living backboned animals. They comprise more than 10,000 species. But their origins remain poorly understood. Lamanna's expeditions have unearthed dozens of exquisitely-preserved avian fossils – many of them including soft-tissues such as feathers and skin – from ~120 million-year-old sediments in the Changma Basin of northwestern Gansu Province, China. More recently, Lamanna and his team have conducted expeditions to latest Cretaceous exposures in the James Ross Basin of the Antarctic Peninsula in search of what may be the world's most ancient neornithines. Dr. Lamanna studied at Hobart College and the University of Pennyslvania. He serves as an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Geology and Planetary Science at University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Lamanna has extensive paleontological field experience in Antarctica, Argentina, Australia, China, Egypt, and the United States. In 2000, he co-led a research team that unearthed Paralititan stromeri, one of the largest dinosaurs yet discovered, in Egypt's Bahariya Oasis. More recently, Lamanna served as chief scientific advisor to Carnegie Museum of Natural History's $36M dinosaur exhibition, Dinosaurs in Their Time, which opened in 2008. Recorded on Monday, May 5, 2014 at Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh, PA.
