A near-total ban on consumable hemp-based THC products advanced in a key Texas Senate panel Tuesday, in apparent defiance of Gov. Greg Abbott who last month told lawmakers he wanted them to regulate the $8 billion industry, not outlaw it. Senate Bill 5, by Sen. Charles Perry, R-Lubbock, would criminalize gummies, vapes, drinks, snacks and smokable flowers containing any amount of the psychoactive compound THC, including marijuana and hemp. In other news, when Texas public school students return for classes this fall, their clubs and classrooms will be subject to a new DEI ban. Senate Bill 12 — signed into law by Gov. Greg Abbott — prohibits diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in K-12 schools; the Professional Bull Riders association is objecting to the bankruptcy proceedings of Phil McGraw's Merit Street Media, as part of an effort to recover disputed claims it estimates at $181 million; and for more than two months, chef Carlos Rodriguez, the owner of Fuego Burger in Fort Worth, has been using a cane due to a fracture he suffered after being attacked at his restaurant. He said he had two fractures and a torn ligament in his knee. He started a GoFundMe campaign aiming to raise $50,000 to cover his surgery and other injury-related expenses. As of Tuesday afternoon, the GoFundMe had raised $6,700. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Get bonus content and notes at wickedproblems.earth.Is the “Abundance” discourse - and you can fit most iterations of it in a spectrum from Aaron Bastani and Zohran Mamdani to Ezra Klein to Elon Musk - an inspiring vision of the future or a dangerous delusion? Is insisting on “limits” just realism or is it pathological pessimism? And where does climate tech fit into all that?We think the answers to these questions are kind of important. We Start at the EndToday's outro track is the COVID-era reboot of a classic Peter Gabriel track, featuring Yo-Yo Ma, Angelique Kidjo, and many more. The reason will become clear. In this episode of Wicked Problems, we sat down with Charles Perry, director of Sustainable Future for All, at the Conduit Club in London.A veteran in the climate and sustainability space, Charles has changed his views from evolution to revolution - a climate revolution akin to the Industrial Revolution. He reflects on his experiences spearheading renewable initiatives at BP, working with Al Gore, and advocating for justice-integrated environmental concerns. What set him on the path? A realisation once he left apartheid South Africa for university that the things he was taught were not necessarily how the world really was. That moment took him to anti-apartheid activism in South Africa and its democratic transition to climate advocacy and the need for a different paradigm on energy.Wicked Problems is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. His direction of travel has been clear for a while - in that climate isn't (just) a tech issue, but one as inextricably tied up with justice as the move was from slavery to fossil fuels. That kind of talk has gotten Charles into some bother before. Like his 2012 BBC interview with Jon Sopel that we clip in the ep.The conversation also explores Perry's views on the moral imperatives of climate action, the obstacles posed by current political and economic systems, and the roles of influential leaders like Nelson Mandela and Al Gore in shaping his philosophy on sustainability.00:00 The Need for a New Revolution00:43 Introduction to Charles Perry01:02 Challenges in Climate Tech and Sustainability01:15 Charles Perry's Journey and Career01:52 Reflections on Working with BP and Al Gore10:58 The Intersection of Justice and Environmental Concerns18:47 The Unstoppable Sustainability Movement21:46 The Future of Energy and Sustainability25:19 Final Thoughts and Inspirations29:54 Conclusion and Call to ActionAll the OutrosThanks for listening. The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: Speaker Dustin Burrows is lining up to have his legacy as the man who backdoor legalized the get-high THC marijuana/hemp industry in Texas. I have been following the fight in the legislature over THC and have read most every story about what is happening. Saying that, I can assure you that Karen Brooks Harper's story in The Dallas Morning News is accurate and the headline has a correct slant on the story: Bill that would save THC retailers from total ban advances in Texas House panel. The people pushing this the hardest are West Texas reps that Speaker Burrows put on the powerful State Affairs panel and are of his leadership circle. The BurrowCrats are directly fighting state Senator Charles Perry's effort to roll back this unintended legalization loophole that came from the Hemp bill in 2019. House leadership is using much time and energy to fight to SAVE the get-high retail business of selling THC infused products. The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: Sadly Senator Charles Perry joined with a few others to help Senator Nichols gut the bill to ban taxpayer funded lobbying. The bill, SB 19 by Senator Middleton, is a wheat-from-the-chaff issue for anyone interested in good and better government. It is an issue conservatives and Republicans have been working to pass for many years.Senator Perry's joining in the gutting amendment is siding with local government functionaries over his constituents (as well as big-government Democrats and RINOs.) And, what does it say about the work of elected officials that they need a hired-gun lobbyist to work with them in order to “make sure the voices back home can be heard,” as Senator Nichols stated? David Spiller (R-Jacksboro) in the House, and passed during the fourth special session in November.“It's very clear the states have the right to defend themselves, and that's the heart of SB 4,” said Perry. “We're not challenging federal supremacy. We're saying you got supremacy. You just chose not to do anything with it. We're going to take that role for you.”

The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: A full review of the motions, votes, and opening statements from the Paxton impeachment debacle which began in our Texas Senate today. There were many terrible votes in the early motions by senators showing only six to eight have much respect for the Rule of Law and constitutional protections. Among the worst votes was 22 to 8 voting against the motion to exclude unlawfully obtained “evidence.” Even Lubbock's Senator Charles Perry voted “Nay” on such – it's beyond shocking.I must say I was near tears in Buzbee's opening because of how personal to me it was. As one of the few long timers who has followed each and every element of the attacks on Paxton over many years, but almost never reads a press account that less than ignorant on what has happened, I was shocked to hear Buzbee echo the things I have said many times about these issues and often in similar language. He even started with the victory of Dan Branch just as I have explained for all of this time! I have felt quite alone in my overall knowledge of these issues making Buzbee's comments was a type of confirmation of my decade of commentary on the Paxton issue as a whole. Our Lone Star story of the day is sponsored by Allied Compliance Services providing the best service in DOT, business and personal drug and alcohol testing since 1995.Disturbing economic trends from the Dallas Fed report: Manufacturing continues to decline and retail sales remain in the dumps. The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: From the Texas Capitol in the 88th Regular Texas Legislature, I interview state Senator Charles Perry, chairman of the Senate committee on Water, Rural Affairs, Agriculture. Senator Perry talks about his major work to benefit securing water resources for Texas' future (SB28.) We also discuss the budget, differing versions of property tax relief, behavioral health, public school classroom discipline (SB245,) power grid issues, and more. Representative Dustin Burrow's bill, HB 2127, to further prevent Texas cities from trying preempt state law and regulate businesses with differing rules took up most of the House session today. Democrats, the tools of the Texas Municipal League and others, have clearly decided to fight hard on this bill and spent most of the day on obstructionist tactics. Our Lone Star story of the day is sponsored by Allied Compliance Services providing the best service in DOT, business and personal drug and alcohol testing since 1995.Thanks to Belle's Chicken Dinner House in Abilene for sponsoring our week of broadcasts from Austin! Senator Perry represents District 28, which is the largest Senate District, geographically, in the State of Texas. We'll be discussing water issues Texas is facing such as boil water notices, drought, flooding, and population growth. We'll also talk about Senate Bill 28, which Senator Perry authored and has bipartisan support as it advances through the Texas Legislature. Due to the severity of the water crisis facing Texas, we encourage our listeners to learn about water policy in Texas and contact your elected officials to actively support a multi-billion allocation to state water resources during this session. The state has a hefty surplus this session, and it is important that lawmakers use a substantial portion of it to ensure safe and ample water supply throughout Texas.
The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: Senate committee moves bill to help Texas Tech and University of Houston systems get more funding but it's just another drop in the bucket effort. The issue will never be resolved until enough legislators set aside pride, envy, and a host of other sins and agree to let the Permanent University Fund (PUF) fund more than A&M and UT.Also, Senator Charles Perry has made future water resources in Texas a big priority of his service and the Senate has passed his SB 28 / SJR 75. However, legislators are making a big long (or short?) term mistake in continuing to add to the clout of the Texas Water Development Board – they are funding, growing, and empowering a Leftist Leviathon that will, at some point, turn on us and do so with little direct political accountability. Our Lone Star story of the day is sponsored by Allied Compliance Services providing the best service in DOT, business and personal drug and alcohol testing since 1995.Sales tax collections up but retail is in the dumps.Trump's indictment by a local prosecutor isn't unique – the same was done in Texas to Rick Perry to kill his presidential campaign: Trump Isn't The First GOP Candidate Indicted By Local Democrats. And, other news of Texas.Listen on the radio, or station stream, at 5pm Central. Borani yemeği İran'a gidince patlıcanlı olmuş ve yoğurt eklenmiş.

It was the most powerful explosion of culture in American history and its effects are still being felt today. Who knows what can happen in San Francisco today with this recent decision by the city, it could spark another renaissance that could affect the whole Psychedelic Renaissance, in the nation and around the world!

The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: What is “responsible” about punishing those not responsible for murder? Don't buy the pro-Second Amendment lines from actor McConaughey, he has called for gun bans for years even as a speaker at an anti-Second Amendment rally. And, note the ridiculousness of the things he says we need to do. It is as if he is unaware that we already have background check for gun purchases and that people who commit crimes already get punished – with jail and even the death penalty. Our Lone Star story of the day is sponsored by Allied Compliance Services providing the best service in DOT, business and personal drug and alcohol testing since 1995.CDC data shows that “vaccine” boosted Americans show higher COVID-19 infections compared to unboosted. Also brave Texas doctor sues the FDA over its untruthful propaganda about Ivermectin.Sales tax collections for local cities continues to be high and well ahead of last year. While a federal judge considers levying fines on Texas over its foster care programs, Senator Charles Perry expresses frustration that Child Protective Services has not made the reforms the Legislature passed. And, other news of Texas.Listen on the radio, or station stream, at 5pm Central. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for April 28, 2022 is: salt junk SAWLT-JUNK noun Salt junk is dried salted beef. // In the past, sailors survived long voyages eating salt junk. See the entry > Examples: "Civil War soldiers referred to hardtack as 'death bells'; sailors called salt meat 'salt junk,' meaning salted rope ('junk' was originally a term for scraps of worn-out rope, which could be put to various uses aboard ship)." — Charles Perry, The Los Angeles Times, 27 Mar. 2002 Did you know? Salt junk might refer to any salty junk food, but, by definition, it refers to dried salted beef and has nautical origins as a name for food preserved with salt for long sea voyages. The word junk itself was used for pieces of old cable or cordage, which influenced the term salt junk for tough, chewy food.
Facts are facts. Senate Bill 1646 was a strong bill that would have called transitioning a minor “child abuse.” The Texas Senate passed the bill. Dan Patrick, Charles Perry, Bob Hall, and Bryan Hughes acted quickly and resolutely to defend Texas children. State Rep. Thank you for tuning into the SeaBros Fishing Podcast! On this episode we sit down with our first woman angler and fisherman on the podcast, Chloe Mikles. Chloe hails from North Carolina and has spent the majority of her life on and in the water. Her passion for the ocean has lead her on some incredible adventures catching, tagging, and studying some of the world's largest and most highly migratory species of fish.Over the past several years she has fished and worked along side a few of the most distinguished and successful scientists and fishermen; including marine biologist Barbara Block with the Tag a Giant Foundation and legendary captain and mate Charles Perry.Chloe's research and efforts have taken her from Gulf of St. Lawrence off of Nova Scotia tagging and releasing giant bluefin tuna , all the way to the Outerbanks of North Carolina tagging and studying tuna, blue marlin and mahi mahi. Not only is Chloe an aspiring scientist, but she has also been a dedicated athlete for most of her life. She was an undefeated high school swimmer and moved on to swim at a highly competitive collegiate level at Cornell University (class of 2020). Chloe is currently pursuing her PHD at Stanford University Hopkins Marine Station in Monterey Bay California. We had the pleasure of fishing side by side with Chloe and her crew in Nova Scotia in 2021; watching them deploy over 50 tags on giant bluefin tuna, and perform sample studies on commercially harvested bluefin at the dock. We cover an array of topics in the conversation and I think we all learned a lot from each other. Some of the tagging studies and recaptures that Chloe has been involved with are absolutely fascinating. In this episode we explore the relationship between cooking and writing. With special guest Anny Gaul, we talk about the origins of national dishes such as couscous and koshary; medieval Arabic cook books; and representations of kitchens and cooking in Egyptian literature. Show Notes: Anny Gaul's writing and recipes, including the one on “bad translations” of hummus are online at cookingwithgaul.com. She wrote about Egyptian koshary as the dish we need right now for Eater. Her article on Abla Nazira's famous cookbooks is here. Her analysis of the depictions of cooking, kitchens and happiness in Egyptian writing can be found in the anthology Insatiable Appetite: Food as Cultural Signifier in the Middle East and Beyond. The essay on couscous from which she reads at the beginning of the episode can be found in the last issue of Arab Lit Quarterly. Treasure Trove of Benefits and Variety at the Table: A Fourteenth-Century Egyptian Cookbook, ed. and translated by Nawal Nasrallah and Scents and Flavors: A Syrian Cookbook, tr. Charles Perry, are both out in paperback this year. Many adapted recipes are available at Nawal Nasrallah's website, nawalcooking.blogspot.com.
