This is a podcast all about the survivors of traumatic incidents. We've all heard the names Richard Ramirez, The Railroad Killer, The Yorkshire Ripper and The Golden State Killer. However, have you heard the names Jane Carson Sandler, Anastasia Heronez, Tracy Brown, or Holly Dunn? Probably not, right? That's because our culture is obsessed with serial killers, but tends to leave their victims out of memory. We think that's kind of messed up. This show seeks to re-humanize the victims, bring them into a positive light, and remind everyone that these are living, breathing people who deserve their humanity.

Southern Baptist Pastor Abuse: David Pittman

Show Notes Survivor David Pittman was raped and assaulted repeatedly by his church's music pastor from ages 12 to 15 in the 80s. The abuser was Pastor Frankie Wiley, and it started during all-boy sleepovers. David reported the abuse to police two decades later, but the statute of limitations expired. He reported the abuse to church leaders, and they told him to keep quiet and that they would pray for him. Southern Baptists make up the largest protestant denomination in the United States with more than 3,370 Southern Baptist churches in Georgia alone. Nationwide, Southern Baptist churches have 14 million members nationwide. Addiction: Iggy Pop

Show Notes Iggy Pop is the alter-ego created by musician Jim Osterberg. Iggy is mostly known for being the excentric and violent lead singer of the STOOGES and for the albums he recorded with David Bowie. He is also often referred to as the Father of Punk. Iggy became famous not only for his new punk sound and his androgynous look but also for his antics on stage, which include cutting himself, rubbing himself with peanut butter, flashing the audience, humping various objects, and leaping into the audience. But these antics hid a painful addiction to drugs that sabotaged his career and his life for years. He nearly died numerous times. His music inspired David Bowe, Nirvana, The Clash, the Sex Pistols, the White Stripes, Nine-in-Nails, the Rollings Stones, Arrowsmith, and more. Attempted Femicide: Bertilla

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 22, 2022 50:33

Show Notes Perhaps you remember seeing or hearing about the #ChallengeAccepted movement that launched in the Western World in July of 2020. It often took the form of women posting black and white photos of themselves on social media with the hashtag. Some of you may have shared such a post. For most people, it was simply a women's empowerment movement. #WomenSupporting Women However, the movement was meant to be so much more. It started during protests in Turkey following the femicide of Pinar Gültekin, a 27-year-old who was found dead on July 21 after being murdered by her ex-boyfriend. Pinar's death marked the 50th femicide to happen in Turkey in 2020 alone. The idea behind a woman sharing a black and white photo of herself is that she could be next. She could be the next victim of femicide, which means murdering someone because they are a woman. No woman is safe. The black and white photos represent how pictures of murdered victims of gender violence end up in black and white in newspapers. Femicide is a frightening misogynistic control weapon used against women by their partners and male relatives to keep them in life. A frightening example is the attempted femicide of a woman known as Bertilla, an alias, in Santa Cruz, Costa Rica. She barely survived after her boyfriend beat her with an ax. She is using an alias because her perpetrator is still free and she still fears for her life. Also... your car temperature gauge is meant to measure the temperature of your engine. Immediately Whitney saw his leathers and tattoos on the tops of his fingers spelling "ROAD KILL". Because Whitney has no filter and a lack of social skills, she immediately said, "Oh! Child Abuse-5 Girl Cousins This week we have a listener story that demonstrates the importance of believing children and contacting the proper authorities as soon as possible. Some people believe family values were much more intact in 1950s America than today. Sorry, but... wrong! The truth is, all families throughout history have had skeletons in closets and bad apples in the mix. Thankfully, priorities have finally started shifting as parents realize that it's much more important to protect their children than to hide dirty family secrets. The story of these five girl cousins who experienced sexual abuse at the hands of the same perpetrator while many of the adults around them pretended it wasn't happening shows the danger of failing to face hard truths. Take action! Perpetrators won't stop on their own and ignoring it won't make it go away. Snake Bite! Jeremy's Story https://www.mindbodygreen.com/articles/dreams-about-snakes-interpretations Get excited listeners! This week's episode is a bit on the lighter side. Do you have an irrational fear? Amanda reveals that she has an insane fear of snakes. At the start of the episode, she'll share a few examples of her crazy behaviors resulting from this fear. Cue Amanda knocking her baby sister over in an effort to flee a potential snake... that wasn't even there.    Given this fear, when Amanda discovered the story of a man who was bitten by the severed head of a rattlesnake.     In May of 2018, Jeremy Sutcliffe and his wife Jennifer were doing yardwork at their Texas home. Jennifer was working in a flowerbed and she reached down to pull out some grass growing around her flowers and she almost grabbed a four-foot-long Western Diamondback Rattlesnake. He reared up and she screamed. Jeremy grabbed a shovel and beheaded the snake.    About 10 minutes later, he bent down to dispose of the severed head, it reared up and bit him on the hand.    Apparently, rattlesnakes can attack for more than an hour after they've been beheaded. Their metabolisms are much slower than those of humans and their internal organs can stay alive for longer than ours. They become aggressive in the throes of death and fight in a last-ditch effort to survive.    By the time he was life-flighted to the hospital, Jeremy was going into septic shock. He survived a little worse for wear, but his story can serve as an important warning for others. However, experts say that people shouldn't attempt to kill rattlesnakes on their own.    Cynthia Vigil Jeramillo: AE Killing Season: The Toy Box Killer -- https://www.avnblogfeed.com/2021/12/07/the-killing-season-bonus-the-toy-box-killer-season-1-episode-7-ae/ Cynthia-vigil.com   Broken in the Best Possible Way by Jenny Lawson: https://www.amazon.com/Broken-best-possible-Jenny-Lawson/dp/1250812488/ref=asc_df_1250812488/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=532483928592&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=5082960414213813934&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9052441&hvtargid=pla-1390246080178&psc=1   This is what a sage grouse looks like: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Greater_Sage-Grouse/id   They do commonly attack humans: https://www.adirondackalmanack.com/2012/06/the-attack-of-the-ruffed-grouse.html     Follow us on social media:  facebook.com/stillhere.podcast.21/  instagram.com/stillhere_podcast/    Become a member on Patreon: patreon.com/stillherepod    Donate to our tip jar: https://tips.pinecast.com/jar/stillhere    Produced by WayGood Creative and Rocketskates Recording: rocketskatesrecording.com   Support #StillHere: A Survivor Podcast by contributing to their Tip Jar: https://tips.pinecast.com/jar/stillhere   Find out more at https://stillhere.pinecast.co   Send us your feedback online: https://pinecast.com/feedback/stillhere/ba35e87b-71c0-4019-83da-b026f07e1b0b   This podcast is powered by Pinecast.     Sources: The Florida Times-Union: https://www.jacksonville.com/story/news/2018/06/07/texas-man-decapitated-rattlesnake-it-bit-him-anyway-and-he-nearly-died-his-wife-says/11930338007/   Reader's Digest: https://www.rd.com/article/the-snakes-revenge/   An article in the Washington Post by Allyson Chiu:  https://www.jacksonville.com/story/news/2018/06/07/texas-man-decapitated-rattlesnake-it-bit-him-anyway-and-he-nearly-died-his-wife-says/11930338007/   Channel 3 News in Texas: https://www.kiiitv.com/article/news/local/one-year-later-corpus-christi-man-still-recovering-after-being-bitten-by-severed-rattlesnake-head/503-ca8bbb5b-20b6-443d-baee-132aa1624ba5   lifescience.com https://www.livescience.com/62771-decapitated-rattlesnake-bites-man.html   dreammoods.com   mindbodydream.com Support #StillHere: A Survivor Podcast by contributing to their Tip Jar: https://tips.pinecast.com/jar/stillhere Find out more at https://stillhere.pinecast.co Send us your feedback online: https://pinecast.com/feedback/stillhere/617fbe68-815e-477a-a625-8306598980a6 This podcast is powered by Pinecast.

Amanda says yes, and makes the case in this episode. She discusses how dress codes teach girls at a young age that it is their responsibility to avoid "distracting" boys while teaching boys to blame girls for their sexual feelings and responses.  Teaching unhealthy gender-based roles to children during their formative years can lead to some boys and men believing they have access to the bodies of women who dress or act a certain way or simply find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. This is my first memory and continued until I was 12-years-old. But like most survivors, I was again sexually assaulted - this time at the age of 17. But even more difficult, is being the mom of a survivor. I tell you this only with my teenager's permission and blessing. For me, there was nothing worse than feeling like I had failed my child. As a parent, I never thought this would happen to us. As my son went through the healing process, he first went through shame, anger, fear, and depression. At the age of 5, my baby told me his suicide plan. As we worked through this together, I learned how to help him heal, and learned that I also had to do the same for myself. Since then, my family has made it their mission to educate other parents on child sexual abuse prevention by partnering with Darkness to Light's Stewards of Children's child sexual abuse prevention training, and I created the Sgt. BARK Body Boundaries coloring books to help parents have a conversation with their children about healthy body boundaries on an age-appropriate level. While most adults would never hurt a child, the shocking truth is that 97% of child sexual abuse cases that are reported and investigated are proven to be accurate. But most children are not believed. As a mom, I believe one of the most important things I can teach my son is to not feel shame for what was done to him and to know that we have the power to take back control of our lives. I have taught him that we are more than a statistic and to know that this will never take away his self-worth. To other parents, I ask you to consider taking the prevention class. It's the most important two hours of your life. And talk to your child about healthy body boundaries. If someone has the courage to tell you what has happened to them, the most important thing you can say next is, 'I believe you.'" —Elizabeth Peace @elizabeth.j.peace Thank you to Elizabeth and her son for allowing us to share their stories. #WeBelieveYou Instagram If you have a story and you'd like us to share it or just share it with us, please email stillherepodcast1@gmail.com To support us at Patreon, please visit https://www.patreon.com/stillherepod This episode was recorded at Rocket Skates Recording with the amazing Nate Brown. Episode Notes Season 2, Episode 6 – Samantha Native American Children Follow-up This was an amazing episode thanks to Samantha! She is a huge advocate for Native people and had so much to share. Here is what she shared with us in hopes our listeners will take interest. Sorry about the audio glitches! Zoom is never a garuntee. If you have any pointers, we'd grateful appreciate any feedback. By the way, Whitney's Heritage is Sioux Indian (Great, Great Grandmother) List of things listeners can do to help     Right now they are trying to overturn the Indian child welfare act, which dictates that native children can only be adopted by native families so as to not take kids away from native families and by proxy forcibly assimilate them.  Write to your senators and representatives in support of ICWA.     Divest from big banks and switch to a credit union.  A lot of big banks fund oil pipelines and pipeline workers are the biggest perpetrators of violence and trafficking of our women, not to mention other kinds of violence against our water protectors.  If you have savings, checking, credit card or retirement/investment accounts with any of the following banks, you are unknowingly signing the paychecks of men that traffic our women: (in the US, Canada) Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citibank, TD Bank, Bank of Montreal, Scotiabank, RBC, CIBC, National Bank of Canada, and MUFG (Japan). You can change your accounts over to a credit union, where you have a say in how your money is invested, and you can talk to your investment professional about switching your growth accounts over to green energy investments instead of fossil fuel investments which have a comparable growth rates.  (Visit RAN.ORG for more information of the damage of oil pipelines and how it relates to the aftermath of historical trauma against indigenous groups, like boarding schools and forced assimilation, and MMIW.)   KNOW WHOSE LAND YOU'RE ON, always always always. Know what traditional lands your home is on, your work, the places you visit, when you travel, consider making monthly donations to these nations to empower them to rebuild—think of it like rent.   Visit NATIVE-LAND.CA or download the NATVE LAND app on your phone. IF YOU WANNA TAKE IT A STEP FURTHER—If you own land or property, consider leaving it in trust to the native nation your land sits on.  If you have a studio or guest suite on your property, consider housing an indigenous person for free for an allotted amount of time to give them an opportunity to save for a downpayment on their own property. AT THE VERY, VERY LEAST, reach out to local communities and try to make deliveries.  Ask what their needs are, and how you can meet them on their terms.  Sure they might need money, but they also might just need volunteers for a food drive or organizers for a demonstration—stuff you can do in an afternoon that builds a relationship with these communities.     Team up with local organizations that petition to remove native sports mascots.  Native mascots are dehumanizing and relegate us to the status of animals forced to fight for sport which in turn desensitizes society at large to our hardships.  Look up local native mascots in your region and write to the superintendents of the school requesting their removal and replacement.  Along these lines—    Don't dress up as sexy natives for Halloween.  It might seem innocuous but like mascots, fetishization of our women desensitizes people to the horrific acts of violence our women experience.  Our culture is not a costume. We are still here.    Watch the words you say.  Try not to call meetings “pow-wows”, or say that someone went “off the reservation” the historical context of these phrases are difficult, as at one point it was illegal for natives to leave their reservations and were often shot for trying to escape.  Do not ever, EVER, say the word RSKN (which is akin to calling a black person the N word), or SQW (which is a derogatory word for a native woman relegated to the status of a sex slave).   MOST IMPORTANTLY—if you witness someone in your privileged circles behaving in these ways, I know its hard, it takes so much courage, but please use your privilege and power to make our voices heard and SPEAK UP.  Our lives depend on it.  Natives have the highest rate of suicide out of any demographic in the history of the world and the systemic and societal oppression we face developed intentionally over decades.  We need brave allies acting consistently to help reconcile that (and most people who do that offensive stuff have no idea the implications of their actions and don't want to cause harm—by speaking up you're helping them not cause harm).   If you'd like to donate money, that's awesome, but I might suggest recurring donations since the healing we are trying to achieve takes time.  Give to organizations that meet people on their own terms and use culturally sensitive, community based approaches to mental health treatment like: Native Wellness Institute, Rising Hearts, Well for Culture, Dream of Wild Health, Frontline Medics, Seeding Sovereignty, NABCHC, and many of the accounts on the instagram list.    Follow and share on social media some accounts that keep up to date with issues in the native community and regularly post calls to action:   MMIWhoIsMissing @mmiwhoismissing NDNCollective @ndncollective Illuminative @illuminative International indigenous youth council @iiycfamily Native Wellness Institute @nativewellness Rising Hearts @rising_hearts WELL FOR CULTURE @wellforculture Dream of Wild Health @dreamofwildhealth Urban Indigenous Collective @urbanindigenouscollective Wetsuweten Checkpoint @wetsuweten_checkpoint Stop Line 3 @stopline3pipeline Giniw collective @giniwcollective Frontline medics @frontlinemedics Seeding Sovereignty @seedingsovereignty NABSHC Boarding school healing group @nabshc Indian Country Today @indiancountrytoday Representative/Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland @repdebhaaland Standing Rock Sioux @standingrocksioux Tonizhoniani-sacred water speaks @tonizhoniani Native Land @nativelandnet Raven Trust @raven_trust First Americans Museum @firstamericansmuseum The Autry Museum @theautry RAVEN READS @raven_reads Indigenous food lab  @indigenousfoodlab Natifs @natifs_org Native Voices at the Autry @nativevoices Vision Maker Media @visionmakermedia Cherokee Nation Film Office @cherokeefilmoffice Indigenous Rising media @indigenousrising Native American Media Alliance @native_american_media_alliance     THANK YOU SO MUCH!     Let me know if you need clarification on anything at all.    Best  Sam If you have a survivor story please email us at stillherepodcast1@gmail.com We are also on Patreon! SHOW NOTES Previously had show notes but they were mysteriously deleted. From what I remember, i mentioned something about the swiss cheese pervert. You can watch that animation here: https://youtu.be/WZP7-AbWKfs Flashing is repulsive, shocking, and violating. If you have been a victim of flashing, hopefully you may find humor in it after the fact. Because really, if someone has to expose themselves to get off, frankly that is depressing. 1 in 10 women have experienced witnessing indecent exposure. When searching for statitics or information about indecent exposure, mostly law firms and lawyers came up in the results. It was said tha up to 60% of indecent exposures are not prosecuted. Like I said, I lost all of my sources to my research and I regretfully do not have the exact links. I do remember reading that serial flashers often escalate to rape then murder. After killing a man there, he moved on to raping women in Sacramento and surrounding areas from 1976 to 1979. At this time, he was known as the East Area Rapist. After this, he moved to Orange County where he killed at least 10 people between 1979 and 1986. At this time he was known as the Original Night Stalker. It wasn't until years later that DNA helped police learn that these three criminals were the same man. As far as we know, he stopped killing and attacking in 1986. He was arrested in April of 2018 and convicted in the Fall of 2020. May he rot.
