Starting with the Black Panthers and working our way to the present, we're getting a crash course on Black American history, decade by decade. When it comes to the Black Panthers and the Black Power movement, myths and misconceptions abound. In this episode, we set the record straight. Just on the heels of slavery, two Black intellectuals rose to national fame. With opposing ideas about Black progress, they ushered in an ideological rivalry that has raged on for generations. Long before MLK vs Malcolm X or LeBron vs Jordan, there was Booker T. Washington versus W.E.B. Du Bois. The debate that they started (about the best route for achieving racial equity) is the exact same feud we're still living in today. They have been so influential that our current culture war perfectly takes the shape of Washington versus Du Bois. We're adopting their ideas, and we don't even know it. On the morning of July 2, 1937, Amelia Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, took off from Lae, New Guinea, on one of the last legs in their historic attempt to circumnavigate the globe. They never made it. What became of the two adventurers? Lost at sea? Crash landed on a deserted island? Captured by the Japanese? We will explore all the options. Branch of Hope: The Branch of Hope Fund Recipient for this episode is Amelia Earhart Memorial Scholarships presented by the Ninety-Nines ninety-nines.org Each year Amelia Earhart Memorial Scholarships are usually awarded to qualified members for five different scholarship types, including two specialized scholarships: an Emergency Maneuver Training Scholarship and an International Scholarship for pilots in developing countries. Since 1941, the AEMSF has awarded over 800 scholarships plus more than 300 awards to student pilots working toward their first certificate. The amount awarded for these scholarships, including Research Scholar Grants and Fly Now/First Wings Awards exceeds $12 Million. The AEMSF's investment account is currently valued at over $6 Million. During WW2, Einstein may have been working with the US Navy to utilize his unified field theory to bend light allowing ships to disguise themselves from enemy U boats. In October 1943, the USS Eldridge was allegedly stationed at a naval shipyard in Philadelphia, and witnesses report it became invisible to both radar and the naked eye. Following the initial experiment, it was rumored to have teleported hundreds of miles away to Norfolk, VA then back to Philadelphia in a matter of minutes. There are claims that this left crew members fused to the bulkheads, vaporized, caught on fire, rematerialized inside out, or became insane with disorientation. What do you think happened? Send us a Text Message.I remember the pilgrim hats, the buckles on the shoes, the feather headdresses and beads, the fun, cutesy crafts we did in school. The smell of construction paper and tempera paint as we stamped out handprint turkeys, glued on brightly colored feathers. You dress like a pilgrim. You be an Indian. We'll all sit down and have a feast together. I remember learning about the first Thanksgiving in school. I remember teachers talking about a day of peace. A day that colonists and natives came together to give thanks, to share a meal. A day they put aside their differences and got along, loved one another. How inspiring. But what they failed to tell us in school is that that peace didn't last. Within a generation, indigenous populations, already decimated by more than 90% thanks to disease, were subjected to oppression, conquest, and all out extermination by European invaders. What they don't tell you in school is that, soon after that fateful feast, descendants of those present at the first Thanksgiving went to war - a war that, in terms of population, became the bloodiest conflict in American history. They don't tell you that in school. Let's fix that. Send us a Text Message.Halloween is weird y'all. I mean, I love it, don't get me wrong, but it is weird. The costumes, carving faces into pumpkins and putting candles in them, trick or treating - walking around to stranger's houses at night, costumed stranger's houses asking for candy, putting the candy into a bucket shaped like a pumpkin with a face. It's bizarre, really. What a bizarre holiday. And it's spooky too, right? It's scary. I feel like it's scarier than ever - monsters and demons and evil clowns, murderers with chainsaws. My neighbor posted something on Facebook recently that said quote “I don't celebrate Halloween for the same reason Satanists don't celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. Light has no fellowship with darkness.” end quote. And I get it because they're literally selling animatronic demons as Halloween yard decorations but I read this and I was like “ohhh, nooo.” Everyone totally misunderstands Halloween. It might seem evil if you don't understand its origins, but did you know Halloween is really a blend of several historical holy days, spiritual, religious, dare I say… hallowed? Let's fix that. Since November 2020, the Republicans have been amplifying "The Big Lie," in which they have made unfounded claims of mass voter fraud. They have been using this as the foundational reasoning and necessity to pass more restrictive voting laws that disproportionately affect Black and Brown communities. This is not a coincidence. In fact, the GOP has historically sought to stifle the votes of Black and Brown voters since this ensures we will have democracy that is representative of ALL rather than just a few. Thus, it is our obligation to ensure this current Democratic majority Senate does everything humanly possible to pass The For the People Act and the John Lewis Act.Sources:History of The Voting Rights Act of 1965Republican Voter Suppression Efforts Aimed at Minorities "Bloody Sunday" and the Turning Point of the Civil Rights MovementJohn Roberts Decades-long Crusade Against the Voting Rights Act of 1965

In its milestone 50th episode, Cape Fear Unearthed ventures into some of the most beautiful and historic places in the region with a look at the cemeteries and graveyards of the Cape Fear. Learn about the origins of and notable residents within burial grounds like Oakdale Cemetery, Bellevue Cemetery, Pine Forest Cemetery, St. James Episcopal Church graveyard and the burial ground at Brunswick Town's St. Philips Church. They are hardly the only cemeteries and graveyards in the region, but they are the historic grounds that hold some of the area's most fascinating history. Joining the conversation is Eric Kozen, superintendent of Oakdale Cemetery, who discusses how burial grounds chart the evolution of the region, why Oakdale was so vital to Wilmington's growth and why cultural changes have shifted how we relate to cemeteries over time.
