What's it like to have your clinic torn apart online? When thousands of phone calls roll in telling you that you're awful, what impact does that have on the staff and how do you handle it? Do you respond? What if that just makes things worse? This week, Dr. Andy Roark is joined by Dr. Meghan Vaught and Sarah Mills from the Maine Veterinary Medical Center. Last month, their clinic found itself on news channels across the country and the front page of reddit. What followed was a harrowing experience no one should have to go through. Along with it, however, can an outpouring of support from clients and the veterinary community as a whole. Since the incident, Sarah and Dr. Vaught have dedicated their time and energy to raising awareness of the impact that public shaming and "cancel" events can have on veterinary teams, and to creating resources to help others who may end up defending themselves against online retribution. My guest on the show today is Stan Bergman, the Chairman and CEO of Henry Schein. Henry Schein is a Fortune 500, 10.6 billion dollar market cap, global distributor of medical and dental supplies and equipment. Stan has been CEO since 1989 and actually took the company public in 1995 for a split adjusted price of $6. From a revenue base of around 1 billion dollars in 1995, the company has grown to over $12 billion today and the stock price has appreciated to over $75. In addition, he is a Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. He holds an honorary lectureship in the Veterinary Faculty of Glasgow University Veterinary School and is an Honorary Fellow (Dentistry) of the University of Edinburgh. He is a past president and board member of the European Veterinary Dental College and also served two terms as president of the British Veterinary Dental Association from 1991 to 1995. He is a past board member of the Academy of Veterinary Dentistry. In 1997 he received the Simon Award from the British Small Animal Veterinary Association for outstanding contributions in the field of veterinary surgery. Susan is Senior AVDC resident at Dentalvets. Originally from rural Argyll in Scotland, Susan graduated from the University of Aberdeen BSc (Hons) in Zoology in 2006 before continuing her studies at Glasgow University Veterinary School, where she graduated in 2013. During her University vacations, she visited Africa several times, studying toothy predators from lions to Great White sharks. After some time in mixed general practice, Susan joined DentalVets in 2015 as a full-time resident in the American Veterinary Dental College programme working towards board certification and specialist status. She is a key member of our clinical staff and training team. Her hobbies range from competitive sailing in the summer to skiing in the winter. She recently took on the challenge of a Vizsla pup.
