Instead of focusing on current events, they delve into the big picture, examining historical cycles of empires and their modern implications. They explore the essay's breakdown of the life stages of empires—pioneers, conquests, commerce, affluence, intellect, decadence, and decline and collapse—illustrate with examples from various historical empires like Assyria, Persia, Greece, Rome, and the Arab Empire. They also discuss how these observations resonate with current issues in the United States, including the welfare state, influx of foreigners, internal political divisions, and the rising influence of intellectualism and materialism. Today, we live our lives a quarter mile a minute, or something like that, because it's time to strap in for The Fate of the Furious! In this one, Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson stop their man beef long enough to shred tires against a nuclear-powered Charlize Theron, reprising her role from Mad Max: Fury Road! Well, that last part isn't true but what if it was? Would you even care? You'd totally believe it because ANYTHING can happen in these movies! And that's why we love them, and it's also why I had to invite F&F superfan Julian Lytle to join me!And if you thought for one SECOND that I wouldn't talk about that Star Wars: The Last Jedi trailer, you've got a kiber crystal up your butt. We'll be talking that trailer, the latest on Carrie Fisher's future in the franchise, and everything coming out of Star Wars Celebration. Wouldn't it be nice to be broadcasting from there right now? >sigh
This weekend, Summer Movie Season unofficially kicks off (in April!) with the release of 'The Fate of the Furious.' And if Hollywood insists on moving up its calendar, we're going to follow suit and move up our big Summer Movie Preview. To break it down, we talk to Slashfilm.com chief Peter Sciretta (00:00:50) about our most anticipated (and possibly most feared) blockbusters. Then we turn to Film School Rejects contributor Jamie Righetti (00:45:25) for a discussion about the smaller releases to explore this summer's counter-programming. Be sure to follow us on Twitter (@OnePerfectPod) and Facebook (facebook.com/oneperfectshot). Subscribe in iTunes, Stitcher, on TuneIn, or wherever you get your podcasts. You can also follow host Neil Miller (@rejects) and guests Peter Sciretta (@slashfilm) and Jamie Righetti (@jamierighetti). This week's closing music is Weezer's "Feels Like Summer," remixed by Sirr_Geoff on Soundcloud. We’d very much appreciate your feedback, as well. A (very) brief overview on how the media portrayal of the conflict in South Sudan doesn't reflect the reality of the conflict on the ground. I haven't gone into much detail on the dynamics of the conflict, but for those of you who are interested, I would recommend starting with Young's book 'The Fate of Sudan', along with Copnall's 'A Poisonous Thorn in Our Hears'. Le Riche and Arnold's 'South Sudan: From Revolution to Independence' is also good. For shorter articles on the conflict, I would mainly rely on reports from various organisations like ICG, HRW and Small Arms Survey. Some good links are: http://www.smallarmssurveysudan.org/fileadmin/docs/working-papers/HSBA-WP-20-Armed-Violence-Southern-Sudan.pdf http://www.hrw.org/reports/2014/08/07/south-sudan-s-new-war http://www.crisisgroup.org/en/regions/africa/horn-of-africa/south-sudan/223-sudan-and-south-sudan-s-merging-conflicts.aspx Jok and Hutchinson have also done some great work on identity issues in South Sudan - they have both written a lot but I would particularly recommend http://www.jstor.org/discover/10.2307/525368?sid=21105962592633&uid=4&uid=2&uid=3738032 If you have any questions/comments/requests for further reading, please either leave a comment or email us at on.the.map.off.the.radar@gmail.com Thanks for watching!
