In which the Mister joins me in reviewing AFTERSUN (2022), from the directorial debut of Charlotte Wells, with a screenplay by Charlotte Wells. As an adult, Sophie (Celia Rowlson-Hall), attempts to piece together and better understand her father, Calum (Paul Mescal) by revisiting old home videos and delving into childhood memories of the last vacation she as an eleven year old (wonderfully portrayed by Frankie Corio) spent with her Dad. Through the course of the film and story, we are given small clues to the larger story at play and the end will leave you breathless. The film has a run time of 1 h and 42 m, is rated R and is available on the Hoopla app, but also streaming on Paramount+ and to buy/rent on Prime Video. Happy Thursday! It's movie night AND trivia time on MASKulinity this week. Remoy and Samantha give each other their favorite film recommendations that expose MASKulinity in different ways. One is a thoughtful indie about a father-daughter vacation. It explores themes of loneliness, mental health issues, and human connection, using beautiful cinematic devices. We'll give you a few hints—it's not an American film and it's a coming-of-age story, perhaps not for whom you might think. The other is making waves on Netflix. A covert office romance gone wrong. A high-power couple sees their relationship tested in the battleground that is Wall Street when one unsuspectedly gets a promotion. The filmmaker asks a pertinent question: Why does a woman being powerful make a man feel powerless? There are spoilers in the companion pieces—you've been warned! COMPANION PIECES:UnMASKing the WorkplaceYa can't pour from an empty cup! Nieuwe Filmmuziek Op 4

This episode contains major spoilers and deals with difficult subject matter, so please watch the film before you listen to this discussion. Freelance film critic and programmer Rafa Sales Ross joins me from Scotland to discuss Charlotte Wells' debut feature Aftersun, starring newcomer Frankie Corio and Paul Mescal in an Academy Award-nominated performance as Calum, a Scottish single father who takes his 11 year old daughter Sophie on a trip to a resort in Turkey in the late nineties, a story told partly through the use of MiniDV holiday footage but more importantly refracted from the perspective of a grown-up Sophie, now at the same age her father was on this fateful vacation and reconsidering her memories. As a film critic who saw Aftersun at its tear-soaked screening at Cannes and as part of the programming team that later selected the film to open the Edinburgh International Film Festival, Rafa is uniquely equipped to speak about this powerful drama about what gets captured in the “mind camera”; parenthood, loss, depression, empathy, memory, nostalgia and the hard-won wisdom children experience when they transform into adults and finally start to understand their parents as people. We are back with our first proper episode of 2023. We review the film everyone was talking about over Christmas, Rian Johnson's 'Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery' starring Daniel Craig and another ensemble cast. We talk about the films we are most looking forward to over the year ahead. In addition, Michael rhapsodises over Charlotte Wells' debut film 'Aftersun' starring Paul Mescal and Frankie Corio, Bill talks about the Mark Mylod black comedy 'The Menu' starring Ralph Fiennes, and Sam has nothing but praise for the Sara Dosa documentary 'Fire of Love'. If that were not all, we pilot a new segment for the podcast - Make-believe Moviehouse. Our first guest is Sean McGeady, a freelance writer/sub-editor who has written for the likes of Empire, Fangoria, Little White Lies and TimeOut. He tells us about what films he would programme in his fantasy film festival and his passion for the little-known sub-genre of 'melt movies'.

Today, we have with us the extraordinary Charlotte Wells – writer-director of one of the most affecting feature debuts in recent memory. Aftersun is a meditative drama about a father and daughter on a resort holiday in Turkey, told through the eyes and camcorder footage of 11-year-old Sophie, played by Frankie Corio. She shares a sweet relationship with her father Callum, played by Paul Mescal. Across their holiday, however, she's able to steal glimpses of him wrestling with problems beyond her comprehension, – problems he attempts to hide from the world. It's a story about memory, parenthood and the heartbreak of growing up and realising that your parents are people, too, with their own burdens to carry. Inevitably, it's being described as an awards season frontrunner, and one of the best movies of 2022.In the conversation you're about to hear, Charlotte tells me how the film began as an exploration of her relationship with her own dad, who she sadly lost aged sixteen. There's a certain overlap between her life and the events of the movie that we unpack in this chat, as well as some big differences between her early drafts of Aftersun versus the final film. Initially, the film was set to feature an adult version of Sophie wandering through scenes following her childhood self, like a sun-soaked Scrooge in A Christmas Carol. There was also a romantic relationship at the holiday resort for Callum that got jettisoned, and much more melodrama, a more pronounced plot.We talk why she stripped away those elements to drill deeper into the father-daughter tensions at the heart of the film, what it is about the pressures and repetitions of a family holiday that make for such an interesting backdrop to the film, and what exactly is happening in the film's astonishing emotional climax: a dance sequence set to Queen's Under Pressure, whose lyrics take on a poignant new meaning in the context of Callum and Sophie's relationship. It's a spoiler conversation, so be sure to watch the film on Mubi before tuning in. Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek.

Flicks with The Film Snob

The painful struggles between parents and children are often a subject of drama, and no surprise, given the plentiful examples of this theme in human experience. What is rare and more difficult is the depiction of a strong emotional bond between a kid and a parent, and in the case of children, a love for one's mother and father that goes beyond words, a kind of environment in the child's mind that permeates life and leaves a lasting effect on the memory. Too often the artist, in a play or film, settles for a forced sense of sweetness, a sentimental, albeit often humorous, perspective on the young experience and point of view. Aftersun, the debut feature from Scottish writer and director Charlotte Wells, is that “one in a thousand” film that captures the essence of a fleeting time with devastating intensity and truth. Sophie is an 11-year-old girl on a summer holiday with her divorced dad at a less than luxurious seaside resort in Turkey. To sum up the plot, the story of what happens, is pretty much exactly what I just said. There is really no story in the usual sense—the big events happen within the characters, and especially within Sophie, played by a luminous young newcomer named Frankie Corio. The film is more like a poem, and a very beautiful one. The one-word title Aftersun, sounds enigmatic like a poem—in fact, it's a lotion that's applied to cool off the skin after exposure to the sun. But even this mundane detail can double as metaphor. Sophie loves her father Calum, played by Paul Mescal, and we soon realize that he's quite remarkable in his way, a man in his 30's who listens with steady attention to Sophie and treats her with tenderness and consideration. But of course we the audience can also see that he's an ordinary man with flaws, and with a life largely unknown to her, who lives near London with her mother the rest of the year and doesn't get to see him much. Through various hints—music and other references—we gradually realize that this is happening in the 1990s, and we're seeing all this as a memory of the adult Sophie today. This layer of memory, like the cooling aftersun of the title, evokes poignant feelings, a steady light of emotion in the heart of the future self looking on the experience through the eyes of the past self, so fleeting and so precious. Wells already shows a mastery of style that can visually explore the dawning awareness of this young girl's own mind and feelings, relentlessly expanding with image and sound the richness of an inner life which sees everything in this world as if brand new. There's much Wells has decided not to tell us. Why did Sophie's mother leave her father? Why Turkey, why are they vacationing there? What is the meaning of the father's melancholy, the shadows that so often stay hidden? These are all meant to be just hints, rather than plot points, hints like the incomplete knowledge kids have of the adult world, a world that Sophie is very curious about, and yet cautious of. And I kept expecting some tragic event to happen in the film, which never did, because the only tragedy here is the transience of beauty and love. It amazes me, I marvel at how once in a great while, a movie will come out of nowhere—filmmakers and actors with which I'm not familiar—and then when I just happen to see it, absolutely destroys me. I'm sure in some way it touches my own memories with my father, now departed, in that bittersweet way we can't always express. All I really know is that the devastating artistry of Aftersun shot me right through the heart.

We welcomed director Charlotte Wells and actress Frankie Corio to NYFF60 to present and discuss Aftersun, a Main Slate selection of this year's festival, moderated by NYFF Artistic Director, Dennis Lim. In one of the most assured and spellbinding feature debuts in years, Scottish director Charlotte Wells has fashioned a textured memory piece inspired by her relationship with her dad, taking place over the course of a brooding weekend at a coastal resort in Turkey. The charismatic Paul Mescal and naturalistic newcomer Francesca Corio fully inhabit Calum and Sophie, a divorced father and his daughter often mistaken for brother and sister, who share a close and loving bond that creates an entire world unto itself. Wells employs an unusual and gorgeous aesthetic that brings us into the interior space of this parent and child, even as she judiciously withholds details, an approach that finally grants the film a singular emotional wallop. Aftersun reimagines the coming-of-age narrative as a poignant, ultimately ungraspable chimera, informed by the present as much as the past. Winner of the French Touch Prize of the Jury at this year's Cannes Festival. An A24 release. Aftersun opens at Film at Lincoln Center on Friday, October 21st. Tickets are now on sale.

She also serves as the Secretary of the Intimacy Coordinators's Branch of BECTU and teaches Intimacy for Performance at LAMDA. Speaking of which, Adelaide graduated from LAMDA's MA in Directing programme in 2017. She has directed productions in the UK and America and is the co-founder and co-Artistic Director of devised theatre company Maude. Her credits as an intimacy co-ordinator include the upcoming Netflix erotic thriller DAMAGE and upcoming ITV queer period drama THE CONFESSIONS OF FRANNIE LANGTON. Past credits include Jack Rooke's TV series BIG BOYS, Charlotte Wells' directorial debut AFTERSUN, BBC drama THEN BARBARA MET ALAN written by Jack Thorne and Genevieve Barr. She is currently working on the HBO/Channel 4 series GET MILLIE BLACK by Marlon James. We talk about drama school, how directing a production of Spring Awakening at 19 provided a first taste of co-ordinating intimacy, how establishing the necessity of having an intimacy co-ordinator on certain sets was at times difficult, choreographing non-sexual intimacy such as the father-daughter relationship between Paul Mescal and Frankie Corio in upcoming MUBI release and Cannes darling AFTERSUN, the kind of persona Adelaide embodies in order to do her job well, how she holds space for actors to admit discomfort and pushing the industry forward to be more representative and inclusive in its depictions of sex. The fact that there are still actors who denounce the need for safe-guarding and choreography when it comes to sex scenes or any scene of an intimate nature, I think underscores the need for these kinds of conversations and I am beyond thankful to Adelaide for having this one with me.
