I'm excited to share my discussion with Coach Terrence Brown Jr. Coach Terrence is the Defensive Backs Coach at the University of Cal. Here is information about his playing and coaching career. I'm in my third season as a defensive backs coach at Cal in 2024. I have spent 11 seasons in the Pac-12 as a player and coach, including the last two seasons at Cal (2002-23) and five campaigns over two stints on the coaching staff at Washington (2015-17, '20-21). I also played collegiately in the league for four seasons at Stanford (2009-12). I also coached at Vanderbilt (2018-19) in between my stints at Washington. In addition, I was among a group of 30 coaches on 247Sports' 30Under30 list in both 2019 and 2020. Coached Patrick McMorris who was selected in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins after posting strong numbers (90 tackles, 4.5 TFL, 1.0 SK, 1 INT, 8 PBU, 2 FR, 2 FF) and Craig Woodson (81 tackles, 3.5 TFL, 1 INT, 4 PBU, 2 FF) who earned his second straight honorable mention All-Pac-12 selection. In 2022 I coached, Daniel Scott a fifth-round selection of the Indianapolis Colts in the 2023 NFL Draft after being a third-team All-Pac-12 pick of Phil Steele and Pro Football Focus as a 2022, as well as Jeremiah Earby a second-team College Football News Freshman All-American, and all three honorable mention All-Pac-12 selections of the league's coaches. At Washington, I coached a pair of 2021 first-team All-Pac-12 defensive backs in Kyler Gordon and Trent McDuffie, while Elijah Molden was a first-teamer in 2020 when McDuffie earned second-team honors. I coached four Huskies currently on NFL rosters in Gordon (Chicago), McDuffie (Kansas City), Molden (Tennessee), and Keith Taylor Jr. (Kansas City), with McDuffie a first-round pick and No. 22 overall selection of the Chiefs in the 2022 NFL Draft while Gordon was taken in the second round (No. 39 overall) by Chicago, Molden was a third-round pick (No. 100 overall) of the Titans in 2021 and Taylor Jr. a fifth-round selection of Carolina also in 2021. As a graduate assistant, I coached a pair of All-Americans in Budda Baker and Sidney Jones, while working with a long list of future NFL defensive backs in addition to Baker and Jones including Kevin King, Jordan Miller, Byron Murphy, Taylor Rapp, Keith Taylor Jr. and Zeke Turner, with Husky defensive backs earning five first-team All-Pac-12 honors during the period. At Vanderbilt, I coached second-team All-Southeastern Conference selection Joejuan Williams in 2018 when Williams led all SEC cornerbacks in interceptions (4), while also pacing all of the league's players in pass breakups (14) and passes defended (18) before he was selected by New England in the second round (No. 45 overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft. Chase Robinson and Chris Lee preview the Mississippi State football roster for the 2024 season and share their predictions for Jeff Lebby and the Bulldogs. Topics include: From Mike Leach's passing to Zach Arnett's one year in Starkville, a lack of continuity puts first-year State head coach Jeff Lebby in a tough spot. However, Lebby did a terrific job in adding skill players in the portal, from quarterback Blake Shapen (Baylor), running back Davon Booth (Utah State), wide receivers Kelly Akharaiyi (UTEP), Kevin Coleman (Louisville) and Trent Hudson (New Mexico State) and also, tight end Seydou Traore (Arkansas State). Mississippi State addressed the offensive line with left tackle transfer Maylan Pounders (Memphis), guards Jacoby Jackson (Texas Tech) and Marlon Martinez (LSU) and center Ethan Miner (North Texas), but the right side of the line (which includes Albert Reese IV and Leon Bell) is almost completely untested. Mississippi State will pin its defensive line hopes on preseason All-Southeastern Conference pick De'Monte Russell, and the hope that returnees like Treyvion Williams and Deonte Anderson find a new level of performance. It's a rebuild at linebacker, where South Carolina transfer Stone Blanton steps in to start along with J.P. Purvis andJohn Lewis. West Virginia transfer Montre Miller will start at corner; Miller had four interceptions in 2022 at WVU. He'll be joined in the secondary by returning starter Corey Ellington at safety. The Bulldogs have a challenging rebuild but perhaps some early built-in wins to help the team gain confidence in Lebby's first year. Chase Robinson and Chris Lee preview Texas A&M vs. Notre Dame in their opening game of the 2024 college football season and share their predictions for the matchup at Kyle Field in College Station. Texas A&M quarterback Connor Weigman returns from injury and should have plenty of help from returning players Rueben Owens and Moose Muhammad, plus, receiver transfers Cyrus Allen (Louisiana Tech), Jabre Barber (Troy) and tight end Tre Watson (Fresno State). The Aggies rebuilt the offensive line around left-side returnees Trey Zuhn III and Chase Bisontis, supplementing them with Kolinu'u Fauulu (Utah) and Ar'maj Reed-Adams (Kansas). Texas A&M builds its defense around a fearsome front seven that includes transfers Nic Scourton (Purdue) and Scooby Williams (Florida) in addition to returnees Shemar Turner and a defensive backfield that includes All-Southeastern Conference cornerback candidate Tyreek Chappell. Notre Dame adds Elko's former pupil, Riley Leonard, at quarterback, and a new offensive coordinator (though not new to Notre Dame) in Mike Denbock. The Fighting Irish lost three starters on the offensive line but have plenty of skill in Jeremiyah Love, Jadarian Price, Mitchell Evans, Kris Mitchell and Beaux Colins. Coordinator Al Golden leads a Notre Dame defense that should be one of the nation's best thanks to All-American candidates Xavier Watts and Howard Cross III, plus, defensive lineman Rylie Mills. It looks like a near toss-up on paper; will Kyle Field prove to be the difference-maker in this one? Chase Robinson and Chris Lee preview the South Carolina football roster for the 2024 season and share their predictions for the Gamecocks. Topics include: The Gamecocks have a new quarterback in LaNorris Sellers, who brings size and mobility. Carolina's had trouble running the ball in recent years, but Arkansas transfer Rocket Sanders and North Texas's Oscar Addaway brighten the outlook considerably. Transfers also headline a revamped wide-receiver room which includes Gage Larvadian (Miami-Ohio), Jared Brown (Coastal Carolina), Amari Huggins-Bruce (Louisville) and Dalevon Campbell (Nevada), but the headliner is sophomore Nyck Harber, who hopes to turn his world-class speed into football success. The Gamecocks return plenty of experience on the offensive line, headed by All-Southeastern Conference candidate Vershon Lee and left tackle Tree Babalade, plus, returning starter Trovon Baugh and Florida Atlantic transfer Kamaar Bell. Coordinator Clayton White builds his defense around a solid unit that includes All-SEC candidates Tonka Hemingway, Debo Williams and Nick Emmanwori. Gilber Edmond returns from Florida State back to Columbia and is joined by plenty of depth, including portal pieces Kyle Kennard (Georgia Tech) and DeAndre Jules (Pitt). Bangally Kamara also transfers from Pitt to help a linebacking group that includes returnee Bam Martin-Scott. The Gamecocks build the secondary around one of the biggest and most physical safety tandems out there: DQ Smith and Emmanwori--but also get a boost from the return of 10-game starter O'Donnell Fortune at corner. Plus, Carolina has punter/passer extraordinaire Kal Kroeger back for another year. The Gamecocks have enough talent to go bowling, but will a schedule that includes LSU, Ole Miss, Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Missouri and Clemson permit it? Topics include: The Bulldogs have 10 (ten!) players who have made various preseason All-American lists, and an additional six players who have been tabbed on a preseason All-Southeastern Conference squad. The Bulldogs are led by quarterback Carson Beck, who's perhaps the preseason Heisman Trophy favorite. - Florida transfer Trevor Etienne adds a dynamic presence to the running back room. Georgia's receiving room of Dillon Bell, Dominic Lovett, Rara Thomas, Michael Jackson III, London Humphres, Colbie Young, Arian Smith and Anthony Evans lead one of the country's deepest receiving rooms. Oscar Delp and Lawson Luckie have the unenviable task of replacing Brock Bowers. Four of Georgia's offensive linemen--Earnest Greene III, Dylan Fairchild, Tate Ratledge and Xavier Truss have all gotten some preseason all-American publicity. Veteran linebacker Smael Mondon is a preseason All-American candidate and Jalon Walker seems poised for a bigger role. The Bulldogs have a pair of All-American candidates in cornerback Daylen Everette and Maliki Starts, but the Bulldogs have players like Ellis Robinson IV and Julian Humphrey who'll need to take big roles also. Georgia's special teams tandem of punter Brett Thorson and kicker Peyton Woodring is a good one. The Bulldogs have a tough schedule but still, Georgia's talent should make it an outstanding bet to reach the College Football Playoff.

Three people were seriously injured in an early morning crash on Whitlock Avenue in Marietta Monday.  The crash happened around 6 a.m. Monday morning when a car crossed over the centerline on Whitlock Avenue near Winn Street, according to Marietta Police Department spokesman Chuck McPhilamy. The vehicle collided head-on with another vehicle headed in the opposite direction. McPhilamy said the drivers of both vehicles were seriously injured in the crash, while a passenger in one of the cars was ejected from the vehicle and also seriously injured. The three injured people were taken to the hospital. There could soon be two Ojularis playing defense in the NFL. Two years after former Georgia linebacker Azeez Ojulari left Georgia to turn pro, his bother, BJ, an edge-rusher and outside linebacker and LSU, is about to follow him.  The former Marietta High School standout made it official Sunday when he made the announcement on social media. Ojulari is looking to follow in the footsteps of his brother, who was selected by the New York Giants in the second round of the 2021 draft with the 50th overall pick. Ojulari, a 6-foot-3, 250-pound junior, has had 58 tackles, 5½ sacks, 8½ tackles for loss and a forced fumble this season, earning All-Southeastern Conference first-team honors. Over his three-year career in Baton Rouge, he has had 129 tackles, 25 tackles for loss, 16½ sacks and 25 quarterback hurries.  LSU is scheduled to face Purdue in the Citrus Bowl on January 2. It has not been determined if Ojulari will play in the bowl game. Ojulari has been projected to be a late first-round or early second-round selection in April's draft. ESPN analyst Todd McShay has Ojulari ranked as the fifth-best outside linebacker on his draft board, behind Alabama's Will Anderson, Army's Andre Carter, Georgia Tech's Keion White and Georgia's Nolan Smith. Fellow ESPN analyst Mel Kiper Jr. has Ojulari ranked seventh. Sonja Natasha Brown was sworn in Thursday evening as the newest judge on the Cobb Superior Court bench. Brown, a Cobb magistrate judge and past president of the Georgia Association of Black Woman Attorneys, replaces retiring Judge Robert Flournoy III. She defeated James Luttrell in a runoff election this summer with 64% of the vote. As a Superior Court judge, Brown will be tasked with handling felony criminal cases, civil disputes, real estate matters and more. With Brown's accession to the bench, she becomes the third Black person to hold a Superior Court judgeship in Cobb, after Kellie Hill and Angela Brown were elected in 2020. Chief Magistrate Judge Brendan Murphy noted the Superior Court bench will also now, for the first time, be majority woman.   Despite cloudy skies at Piedmont Church's annual “Christmas at Piedmont,” children flocked to the petting zoo's goats and llamas and waited in a lengthy line for a snow slide with a tube. And, of course, there was the opportunity to share wish lists with Santa. Meanwhile, more than 20 elementary school choirs performed on two stages, and people shopped for the holidays at an arts and crafts market of local vendors during the free event off Piedmont Road. Marlon Longacre, one of Piedmont's pastors, estimated 13,000 to 15,000 people attended the two-day event. Last year's event raised $24,500 for local schools, according to Longacre. This year's main sponsor was Superior Plumbing. Longacre said the event provided an outlet for the music programs of schools in unincorporated northeast Cobb, comparing it to holiday events usually thrown by city governments, like Santa's arrival in Acworth. Piedmont Senior Pastor Ike Reighard, also CEO and president of the nonprofit MUST Ministries, said he hoped the event allowed parents with busy schedules to see their kids perform.   Wheeler suffered its first loss of the season in a battle of nationally ranked teams. Number 10 Columbus, from Florida, defeated the Number 7 Wildcats 73-70 on Saturday in the Battle of the Peach at Wheeler High School. Columbus was led by a combined 44 points by the Boozer brothers – Cameron and Cayden – the sons for former NBA All-Star Carlos Boozer. Wheeler led 37-32 at the half, but Columbus rallied in the third quarter to take a 56-51 lead behind 14 points in the period by Cameron Boozer. Wheeler's Isaiah Collier, Jelani Hamilton and Arrinten Page combined for 57 of the Wildcats' points. Wheeler will travel to Florida to play Tampa Catholic in the City of Palms Classic on Friday.   At the Battery Atlanta there is an ongoing holiday double feature — Santa himself, behind the desk of one of his many remote offices, and a holiday market featuring minority-owned businesses. Sponsored by Truist, through Christmas Eve, “Santa's Post Office” will be open at 800 Battery Ave. People can visit and take pictures with Santa while delivering their wish lists to Santa and do some holiday shopping, complimentary gift wrapping included. Visiting with Santa is also free. Odette Shirley owns the self-care boutique Maison Jovence and said that on the first day of the holiday market, her business made about double what her pop-ups usually make. She sold out of many of her candles. Another business owner, Omar “Chilly-O” Mitchell, said he was happy to see the support for Black-owned businesses. His clothing company, Chilly-O Culture Co, has been a mainstay of the Atlanta street wear scene, according to Chilly-O's partner for this pop-up, who goes by the name Lurchero. Chilly-O and Lurchero said they go way back in the Atlanta art scene. Lurchero is the creator and owner of Only Positive Energy, a brand that curates and produces art exhibitions and events around Atlanta. Only Positive Energy partnered with Chilly-O Culture Co for the holiday market, jointly selling Chilly-O's clothes bearing the OPE brand. Santa, the ultimate holiday celebrity, was a major draw, according to parents at the market. Avery Kaczynski, a 6-year-old from Vinings, said she asked Santa if she was on the good list. She added that she hopes to get a coffee-making set to practice her barista skills. She wants to be a barista someday. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews      -            -            -            -            -            The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County.             Subscribe today, so you don't miss an episode! MDJOnline            Register Here for your essential digital news.            https://www.chattahoocheetech.edu/  https://cuofga.org/ https://www.esogrepair.com/ https://www.drakerealty.com/           Find additional episodes of the MDJ Podcast here.             This Podcast was produced and published for the Marietta Daily Journal and MDJ Online by BG Ad Group   For more information be sure to visit https://www.bgpodcastnetwork.com                    See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
