We spent a season discovering The Salvation Army's Pathway of Hope—a national initiative to provide individualized services to families with children, addressing their immediate material needs and providing long-term engagement to stop the cycle of poverty. But let's take a step back. What is hope?   Kierkegaard called it a passion for the possible. Psychologist C.R. Snyder said it's a reservoir of determination. Emily Dickinson said it's the thing with feathers that perches in the soul and sings the tunes without the words.  It's hope.  And it's an essential ingredient, part of the namesake of The Salvation Army's Pathway of Hope.  Dr. Suzanne Phillips is a licensed Psychologist, Psychoanalyst, and Fellow and Co-chair of Community Outreach for the American Group Psychotherapy Association (AGPA). She has been a psychologist for more than 35 years and is a newly retired Adjunct Full Professor of Clinical Psychology at LIU Post, a private university in New York. And as someone in the business of hope, she's on the show to help us better understand hope and what it does psychologically and physiologically—plus how we can recognize it and find more of it in our lives.  It's not magic, she says, but a mindset, a propeller for action and possibility. And, it's contagious.  WHAT'S YOUR CAUSE? Take our quiz. RECEIVE A GOOD WORD. Get the daily affirmation email.  STUDY SCRIPTURE. Get inside the collection. GATHER WITH CARING MOMS. Join the group. BE INSPIRED. Follow us on Instagram. FIGHT FOR GOOD. Give to The Salvation Army.

PUMP: A Natural History of the Heart with Bill Schutt Vertebrate Zoologist Bill Schutt is a vertebrate zoologist and author of five nonfiction and fiction books, including the New York Times Editor's Choice, Cannibalism: A Perfectly Natural History. Recently retired from his post as professor of biology at LIU Post, he is a research associate at the American Museum of Natural History, where he has studied bats all over the world. His research has been featured in Natural History magazine as well as in the New York Times, Newsday, the Economist, and Discover. https://billschutt.com/ For centuries, humans have been fascinated by the heart. Aristotle believed it was the seat of consciousness; the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz mused about how his life would change if only he had one; and poets and musicians from Shakespeare to Tom Petty to Stevie Nicks have written countless words about hearts being cold, broken, and lonely. Now, American Museum of Natural History zoologist Bill Schutt, the critically acclaimed author of Cannibalism, turns his attention to this vital organ in PUMP: A Natural History of the Heart (Algonquin Books: Sept 21, 2021). PUMP explores the mysteries and wonders of the literal heartbeat of life on earth. This is the first book to present in-depth natural histories of both the human heart and the hearts of dozens of diverse animal species ranging from worms to alligators to bats to sea squirts.  PUMP is an illuminating journey that shows how the heart has become the core of not only the circulatory system, but also the natural world. From a Canadian museum where Schutt examines a rare, preserved blue whale heart the size of a golf cart to New England beaches where horseshoe crabs are being harvested for their life-saving blood to labs where he encounters frozen hibernating wood frogs, PUMP takes readers on a fantastic trip around the world, telling an incredible story of evolution and scientific process. Readers journey with Schutt through human history, too, as philosophers and scientists hypothesize, often wrongly, about what makes our ticker tick. The book traces humanity's cardiac fascination from the ancient Greeks and Egyptians, who believed that the heart contains the soul, all the way up to modern-day laboratories, where scientists use animal hearts and even plants as the basis for many of today's cutting-edge therapies. Schutt interviews notable doctors, researchers, and animal experts, revealing unexpected anecdotes and studies including:   the science behind the survival of the Antarctic icefish, whose blood contains a natural antifreeze; the use of tropical Zebrafish, an organism that shares more than 70 percent of its genes with humans, to study the regrowth of functional heart muscle in humans; the heart of the Burmese python, which can grow 40 percent after eating a meal, and how this invasive species can help researchers better understand physiological human heart growth; the scientific background on why doctors made the switch from therapeutic bloodletting including the use of leeches to blood transfusions as a way to restore health; the strange science behind the giraffe circulatory system – which includes a massive high-pressure heart that can pump blood to heights of eighteen feet and unique adaptations that prevent blood from rushing to their lowered heads when they drink; the 150-year-old mystery behind the ailments that plagued Charles Darwin for the last forty years of his life, which may be traced to a rare bloodborne disease he contracted during his voyage on the H.M.S. Beagle;  the experiments showing the direct relationship between bereavement and Takotsubo syndrome, better known as “broken heart syndrome”; the brand-new technologies utilized by various labs to grow and regenerate the human heart from stem cells, animal hearts, and plants.  https://billschutt.com/ Learn more about Dr. Bernie here:  http://berniesiegelmd.com/

Ways on how you can receive support if you are or have been a victim of domestic violenceJennifer Capezza has a diverse background beginning in live theatre production and special events. Transitioning from this to receiving her Master's of Public Administration from LIU Post to enter into the Non-Profit field to focus on special events in the fundraising departments. Along the way she founded and built All CAPZ Consulting. A social media marketing, management, and training firm dedicated to empowering you to take control of your digital footprint. While she enjoyed this work, especially working alongside others mall businesses and helping them to build their digital platform and grow their customer base, it was missing something. She missed the excitement of building and launching special events and the satisfaction of working towards the greater good. Joining the team at LIADV brings her career full circle and applies all her experience, both on the ground and online to achieve successful fundraising campaigns.  Tune in for this sensible conversation at TalkRadio.nyc or watch the Facebook Livestream by Clicking Here.Segment 1Tommy opens up today's show talking about how important the non-profit field is and it's impact for the community. Tommy's guest today is Jennifer Capezza, who has a background in live theater production and special events. She transitioned from this to working on her Master's Degree in Public Administration to enter into the Nonprofit field to focus on special events in fundraising departments. Currently, Jenn is part of the team at LIADV, applying her experience to help achieve successful fundraising campaigns. LIADV is a nonprofit organization that helps with prevention, support and healing for abuse victims in the Long Island area. Jenn gets right into some info about their hotline that someone can call when they need help. People who have experienced domestic violence in need of counseling, legal assistance, or even shelter can call the LIADV 24 hour hotline 631-666-8833. Segment 2 As a teenager and into adulthood, Jenn always worked in live theater production and special events. She has always been very passionate. Jenn would work as a stage manager and production manager. Although Jenn was able to participate in events such as the Tribeca FIlm Festival, she felt even more excited putting together special events that dealt with nonprofits because of her contribution and its impact. Jenn has worked with LIADV for 10 years as a volunteer and has been with them full time for about 4 years now. Going from theater to nonprofit and doing incredible work for her community, Tommy comments that even if you don't know where you are currently or where you are going in your life and career, your journey will take you places you never thought you'd be in.Segment 3 Coming back from the break, Tommy recalls being in school and how they had a play to raise money for disability awareness month. This was a time when certain topics were almost taboo. Jenn says that LIADV was the first domestic violence organization in Long Island when it first started. It started off as a hotline number which now can translate to over 100 languages. Unfortunately domestic violence affects more women than illnesses do. Jenn also makes a point that domestic violence can happen to anyone, men and women. Jenn and LIADV are always there to make sure everyone feels safe. Jenn talks about the complication that happens when leaving a relationship; it's not as easy as just leaving for reasons such as abusers in relationships having power over their victim. Jenn explains that abuse doesn't always mean that it's physical as it can also be emotional and mental abuse.   Segment 4Coming back from the final break, Jenn talks about services available through LIADV. They offer a shelter house that can bring in 16-17 people to stay, including children who are fleeing their homes to escape domestic violence and have no other options. People are allowed to stay at the shelters as long as they need to. The organization also offers a variety of assistance and training in financial literacy education as well as help with resume writing, interview prep, courtroom advocacy, and legal assistance. Jenn says that the organization is open to working with schools, sponsor partners, community groups and more. On October 1st, they have an event called Pause for the Cause that will raise awareness of the link between domestic violence and animal abuse, and raise funds to support LIADV's services. They have more events earlier in the year which you can find out more about on their website. So much to talk about as always but to close out the show, Tommy thanks Jennifer Capezza for joining him today. You can find and connect with LIADV through Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and liadv.org. Next week, Tommy will be speaking with Cliff Baker from the organization, A Need We Feed.

We've pondered the puzzles of the human body for millennia, questioning the function of both the visible parts and the parts hidden away behind layers of skin, muscle, and bones. When it comes to the human body— and the bodies of many other living creatures— the heart is an organ that's long been central to our understanding of life. How did humans get from mummifying the heart separately from the body in order to weigh the soul inside it, as ancient Egyptians once did, to the modern ability to save and extend lives by transplanting a heart from one human into another? In Pump: A Natural History of the Heart, zoologist Bill Schutt explored the mind-boggling history of the heart in both human and non-human life forms. He covered everything from clear-blooded Antarctic icefish to the origin of the stethoscope, weaving in fascinating myths, hypotheses gone wrong, and scientific breakthroughs along the way. You'll never consider that rhythmic thumping in your chest the same way again. Bill Schutt is a vertebrate zoologist and author of six nonfiction and fiction books, including the New York Times Editor's Choice, Cannibalism: A Perfectly Natural History. Recently retired from his post as professor of biology at LIU Post, he is a research associate at the American Museum of Natural History, where he has studied bats all over the world. His research has been featured in Natural History magazine as well as in the New York Times, Newsday, the Economist, and Discover. This season, we're discovering The Salvation Army's Pathway of Hope—a national initiative to provide individualized services to families with children, addressing their immediate material needs and providing long-term engagement to stop the cycle of poverty. Last week, we heard from a smalltown service center director about what it takes to deliver Pathway of Hope support day-to-day along with a current participant in the initiative. EPISODE SHOWNOTES: Read more. WHAT'S YOUR CAUSE? Take our quiz. STUDY SCRIPTURE. Get inside the collection. GATHER WITH CARING MOMS. Join the group. BE INSPIRED.
