2025 NFL Draft Tight End Class Breakdown – Scouting Report & Highlights

Send us a textDrew and Rob take a deep dive into the top tight end prospects in the 2025 NFL Draft, breaking down their strengths, weaknesses, and draft projections. This class features a mix of high-end talent, athletic pass catchers, and physical blockers, but who stands out as the best of the best?  At the top of the board is Penn State's Tyler Warren, a dominant force who put up monster numbers in his final college season. At 6'6” and 261 pounds, Warren earned the John Mackey Award, First-Team All-American honors, and was named Big Ten Tight End of the Year. His ability to contribute in multiple ways makes him the clear number-one tight end in the draft, but he still has room for growth in his route running and pass protection.  Right behind him is Michigan's Colston Loveland, a smooth route runner with wide receiver-like movement skills. He's not the most physical player and struggles with contested catches, but his upside as a dynamic receiving threat has him locked in as a late first-round prospect. Bowling Green's Harold Fannin Jr. put up jaw-dropping numbers with over 1,500 yards and 10 touchdowns, making him an unstoppable force in the MAC. However, questions about his athleticism and competition level make him more of a Day 2 target.  The depth in this tight end class continues with LSU's Terrance Ferguson and Mason Taylor, both talented pass catchers with strong red zone skills but some concerns in blocking and handling physical defenders. Miami's Elijah Arroyo is one of the fastest tight ends in the draft with big-play potential, but his medical history, including an ACL injury, raises red flags. Gunnar Helm from Texas brings toughness and reliable hands, but he lacks elite speed and still needs work on his blocking.  Further down the rankings, Notre Dame's Mitchell Evans, Clemson's Jake Briningstool, and Iowa's Luke Lachey all bring different skill sets to the table. Evans is a strong contested-catch receiver but lacks high-end athleticism, Briningstool has deep-threat ability but needs to bulk up, and Lachey follows in the footsteps of past Iowa tight ends, offering solid fundamentals but lacking standout traits.  Drew and Rob analyze what makes these tight ends valuable at the next level and where they might land in the 2025 NFL Draft. With teams always searching for the next elite playmaker at the position, this year's draft class has plenty of intriguing options. Whether it's a first-round talent like Warren or a mid-round gem, this episode provides a full breakdown of what each prospect brings to the table.Support the showAll Episodes are shot LIVE with fan interactions on Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, & TwitchSponsor the show at: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/2giantgoofballsInterested in starting a podcast. 1. A reason why some are down on this draft class overall is that only four-to-six players fit the mold of a consensus "blue chip" prospect. In your view, is Warren one of those four-to-six players and is he worthy of being selected in the top-seven despite the extremely low hit rate on first-round TE's?2. According to football data guru Warren Sharp, Colston Loveland only caught two of 10 contested targets, only forced three missed tackles (5% missed tackle rate, lowest in class), and ran just 13% of his routes against man coverage, which he'll see far more often in the NFL. Granted, he did have subpar QB play and was playing through injury last season. Of those aforementioned data points that Warren raised, which one worries you the most and why? 3. Assuming Mason Taylor makes the requisite improvements in his route running, do you think he eventually becomes that “Joker” weapon for an NFL offense? 4. Given what you do know about Elijah Arroyo's medical history, would it surprise you if he falls all the way to Day 3? 5. Does Terrance Ferguson scream "quintessential workout warrior to avoid at all costs" to you, or do you think there's a far better player at the NFL level waiting inside of him?6. Do you think Gunnar Helm is a far better athlete on tape compared to what his Combine numbers suggest, and should he fall to Day 3, do you think whichever team selects him will have a potential steal on their hands? 7. Buy Or Sell-Harold Fannin, Jr., Mitchell Evans, Thomas Fidone II, Jackson Hawes, Jake Briningstool, Moliki Matavao, Oronde Gadsden II, C.J. Dippre, Jalin Conyers

Irish Breakdown closes the week with a Friday Rapid Fire edition of IB Nation Sports Talk. Today's topics include: * News broke Friday that Notre Dame is set to hire Detroit Lions Director of Scouting Advancement Mike Martin as the football team's new general manager. Martin spent the last four years in Detroit's front office, where he helped turn a perennially losing organization into one of the top teams in the NFL over the last two years. We share our thoughts on Marcus Freeman going the NFL route to fill the vacancy as well as the possibility of Auburn's Kenyatta Watson working with Martin in a recruiting/player personnel role. * We discuss comments from former Notre Dame defensive coordinator Al Golden, who was named the Broyles Award winner as the nation's top college football assistant coach for the 2024 season. * Fill-in the blank...It's BLANK that Golden also said that Irish secondary coach Mike Mickens will be up for the Broyles Award very soon. * Fill-in the blank...We started the week talking about the fact that Penn State running backs coach Ja'Juan Seider is likely to replace Deland McCullough in the same position here at Notre Dame. Nothing's official yet...but it's BLANK that Seider posted a photo of Notre Stadium from an airplane to his IG story yesterday and he also has a picture of Jeremiyah Love as his IG avatar photo. * Eight former Notre Dame players got invites to the NFL Draft Combine: Riley Leonard, Beaux Collins, Howard Cross, Rylie Mills, Benjamin Morrison, Mitchell Evans, Jack Kiser, and Xavier Watts. Who has the most to gain? * We got word this week that Notre Dame's spring football practice will begin on March 18th. We already knew it will end with the Blue-Gold game on April 12th. What do you think? * Fill-in the blank...Olivia Miles and Sonia Citron combining for 12 3-pointers in Thursday's win over Pittsburgh is BLANK. * After USC handed No. 1 UCLA it's first loss of the season, on a scale of 1 to 10...What chance do you give the Irish to be the new No. 1 team when the new polls come out Monday? * This got buried in the Super Bowl last week...The NFL will play its first game in Australia in 2026. Irish Breakdown answers "We In or We Out" questions from listeners/subscribers on today's show! Some of today's topics include: * We in/we out Notre Dame's chances of making it to the championship game are over 60% if they beat IU. * Indiana will give up a season high rushing yards (Charlotte 137 yards) * Big 12 Refs will be the best crew we've seen all year * Jaiden Ausberry will lead the LBs in tackles for 3rd game in a row * Mitchell Evans will be the leading receiver Friday night * Notre Dame dominates the “middle 8”, scoring 17+ points to Indiana's 7 or less * Notre Dame has at least two 4th down stops (could be 4th and goal or other) against IU. * Betting the over on a made-up sack betting line of 3.5 for the Irish. * Notre Dame doubles up IU's average rushing yards allowed of ~75 yards/game for 150 yards or more. * In or out on all black uniforms vs UGA in the quarterfinals. * Notre Dame stadium will be ROCKING for the majority of the game? * The Irish WR corps accounts for 150 receiving yards * A Jeremiyah Love hurdle. * A Christian Gray INT. * Irish start fast and set a tone up 14 in first quarter * Irish down at half * ND/IU Game covers the over * The University intentionally trolled us on the black uniforms. Trotting out Freeman in a black hoodie is hilarious in retrospect * ND defense have 3+ sacks on IU. * ND has a blocked punt. * ND turn over margin against IU is 3 to 1 in their favor. * We In We Out: The ND D-line returns to form after its lackluster SC game and gets pressure on Kurtis Rourke allowing Al Golden to not have to bring extra rushers especially with Howard Cross back. * We In We Out : Love and Jadarian Price have 180 plus yards combined and 3 Touchdowns accounted for between them. * No less than 5 receivers touch the ball on Friday for Notre Dame (not counting RBs) * The game will play out similar to the OSU IU game, with IU keeping it close in the first half before ND pulls ahead for a 2+ score win * This will be the most underrated stadium atmosphere for the first round and IU will feel it * After reading Riley Leonard's letter, I bet $1,000 on ND to cover the spread. Will do the same thing in every play off game we play in this year. Am I drinking kool-aid or are you all in? * Friday and Saturday's CFP games will go chalk * The largest margin of victory from highest to lowest: Notre Dame, Penn State, Texas, Ohio State * Highest scoring game: Penn State/SMU * Lowest scoring game: Ohio State/Tennessee * This is the most important game ever played at Notre Dame Stadium. We in or we out? * Ausberry, Drayk Bowen and Jaylen Sneed will make big plays Friday night * Mitchell Evans and Eli Raridon will be the X-factor in the ND offense. * Love and Price will be the difference * The presence of a vocal and variably obnoxious IU contingent, together with the absence of cold-intolerant older fans, will arouse the presence and volume of the Notre Dame crowd to its highest level in recent memory. The stadium will actually shake. Irish Breakdown answers subscriber submitted "We In or We Out" questions as well. Some of today's topics include: * We In or We Out: Coach Al Golden and Coach Mike Mickens are both on ND staff for the 2025 season? * In or Out: After watching Notre Dame come out rusty from a bye, the Top 4 seeds will experience this in the playoffs after sitting for 3+ weeks and going up against teams that played the week prior. * In or Out: We will see Mike Denbrock employ more 21 Personnel the last three games of the regular season? * In or Out: We will see Denbrock employ more 21 Personnel in the playoffs? * We in or We out: Now that Riley Leonard has discovered that Mitchell Evans is back to full health and up to his old tricks, and that The Great One can take you to the end zone single-handedly if Mr. Leonard continues to throw to Him (2 catches for 30 yards on a 36-yard drive and 2 catches plus a PI for 45 yards on a 65-yard drive, both ending in TDs), Mr. Leonard will continue to throw to them. The added offense will present additional complexity for opposing defenses, elevating the offense to Championship-grade. * The senior day ceremony is cool, because it's fun to cheer for the seniors individually and they have a nice moment, but in a way it's also anticlimactic because they don't actually get to run out of the tunnel “one last time” together with their teammates. We in or we out? * Notre dame needs to win a championship before they start getting the respect they truly deserve from all media outlets. In or Out? * ND will lose both Mickens and RB coach Deland McCullough this offseason. We in or We out? * In or Out: Ohio State gets left out of the playoffs if they lose again. * Virginia's QB has a noodle arm and tends to throw a few interceptions from time to time, are you in or out on the over bet if it was set at 2.5 for Notre Dame's total number of interceptions? * Michigan will become the first team in history not to qualify for a bowl game following an NC championship season. In or Out? * The O-Line continues to quietly grow these last few games of the season until we realize that they aren't really making any major mistakes and have become quite consistent. Today's Rapid Fire topics include: * Fill-in the blank...Notre Dame's No. 10 ranking in the first College Football Playoff rankings tell you BLANK about their playoff chances. * One of the national narratives coming out of the first College Football Playoff ranking is that the big brand names are being favored in the rankings. Do you Buy or Sell that? * Which team in the initial top 12 in the rankings are you most convinced will not be in the playoffs? * Fill-in the blank.... Irish tight end Mitchell Evans being named a Mackey Award semifinalist is BLANK. * Notre Dame men's basketball opens its season tonight against Stonehill. Fill-in the blank...This season needs to be BLANK for Micah Shrewsberry's team. * Fill-in the blank...TV rules analysts are BLANK. * There's a guy on-line who is offering to let other guys beat him up so they can prove to their girlfriends they are not wimps. For the low, low price of $50 on weekdays or $60 on the weekend, you can set up a time and location and he will come and harass your significant other and...as he puts it...BAM...you can show up and save the day and rock his world. Irish Breakdown

Irish Breakdown answers subscriber submitted We In/We out questions about Fighting Irish football. Some of today's questions include: * We In/We Out: Riley Leonard has more passing touchdowns than rushing touchdowns in total for the next 3 games. * Jadarian Price bounces back in a big way after his fumble/benching against Louisville. * A frigid sub-32 degrees game day is preferable to a sweltering 90 degrees game day. We in or we out?? * The most difficult part about maintaining success in modern college football is player focus and culture (as evidenced by whatever FSU is doing). We in or we out?? * Kenny Minchey sees the field for at least two more games this year, and Carr sees the field at least one more time this year. We in or we out? * We in/ We out: Guerby Lambert gets playing time going forward and looks good enough to work himself in to the starting lineup. * We in/We out: Mitchell Evans rebounds in the remaining games and goes from currently 10 catches to 30 , from 82 Yards to 320 and from 0 TD to 5. * We In/We Out: Jeremiyah Love is currently averaging just over 11 carries a game. That goes up over the remaining games to an average of 18 per game. * If Al Washington's recruiting could match the work he's done to get guys like Junior Tuihalamaka, Loghan Thomas, and Bryce Young ready to play meaningful snaps this year, then he would be a top 5 DL coach in the country. We in or we out. * We In / We Out: The two most difficult remaining games are the two service academies due to style of play and location of the games. * We in/out: Jordan Clark is the biggest positive surprise off season transfer! Oben is the most disappointing offseason transfer! Chase Robinson and Chris Lee preview Texas A&M vs. Notre Dame in their opening game of the 2024 college football season and share their predictions for the matchup at Kyle Field in College Station. Texas A&M quarterback Connor Weigman returns from injury and should have plenty of help from returning players Rueben Owens and Moose Muhammad, plus, receiver transfers Cyrus Allen (Louisiana Tech), Jabre Barber (Troy) and tight end Tre Watson (Fresno State). The Aggies rebuilt the offensive line around left-side returnees Trey Zuhn III and Chase Bisontis, supplementing them with Kolinu'u Fauulu (Utah) and Ar'maj Reed-Adams (Kansas). Texas A&M builds its defense around a fearsome front seven that includes transfers Nic Scourton (Purdue) and Scooby Williams (Florida) in addition to returnees Shemar Turner and a defensive backfield that includes All-Southeastern Conference cornerback candidate Tyreek Chappell. Notre Dame adds Elko's former pupil, Riley Leonard, at quarterback, and a new offensive coordinator (though not new to Notre Dame) in Mike Denbock. The Fighting Irish lost three starters on the offensive line but have plenty of skill in Jeremiyah Love, Jadarian Price, Mitchell Evans, Kris Mitchell and Beaux Colins. Coordinator Al Golden leads a Notre Dame defense that should be one of the nation's best thanks to All-American candidates Xavier Watts and Howard Cross III, plus, defensive lineman Rylie Mills. It looks like a near toss-up on paper; will Kyle Field prove to be the difference-maker in this one?
