Couros reflects on the challenges faced by educators today, including overwhelming demands and the need for authentic leadership, highlighting the significance of student input in shaping educational practices and the necessity for principals to maintain integrity and transparency. Quotes: “Being an authentic leader means leading with honest and sincere intentions while maintaining a high level of integrity.” - Dr. Marcus J. Belin “To truly transform the educational experience, school leaders must actively involve students in the decision-making process. By creating platforms for student voice, such as student councils, advisory boards, or regular feedback sessions, leaders empower students to contribute their perspectives, ideas, and aspirations. This not only fosters a sense of ownership and engagement but also ensures that decisions are made with a deep understanding of student needs and aspirations.” - Dr. Mary Hemphill “The point is, it's not what you have when you lead at school. It's what you do with what you have. It's not the plane. It's the pilot.” -Mike Kleba “If you are considering trying something new in your school, ask the people you serve what they believe is no longer needed. And if the answer is, ‘Well, there is nothing that we are doing currently that we can feasibly get rid of,' then maybe the answer becomes not to take on that new initiative or idea.” -George Couros Links: Books by Allyson Apsey - https://allysonapsey.com/books/ What Makes a Great Principal - https://www.amazon.com/What-Makes-Great-Principal-Leadership/dp/1948334739 __________________________________________ Please share your thoughts with us on Twitter or Instagram at #InnovatorsMindset. This episode of The 10 Minute Teacher was a lot of fun. Not only did I get to interview my principal, Jonathan Dyal, but my film class, the "Sherwood Showstoppers," filmed the interview. (I'm so proud of how much they are learning!) After a tweet I sent out in October 2023, George Couros and Allyson Apsey invited me to write a chapter about Jonathan in their book What Makes a Great Principal: The Five Pillars of Effective Leadership out this year. (You can listen to my earlier interview with George about what truly makes a great principal and the five pillars shared in the book.) Principal Dyal shares his philosophy of walking the halls frequently to stay connected with teachers and students, emphasizing his proactive rather than reactive philosophy. We talked about his strategies to build trust with teachers and how he uses observations positively. (I like his philosophy of observations; that is what the tweet was about in the first place.) He also discusses how he builds positive relationships with students in a way that improves student culture. This is a unique interview in that I see this firsthand and know the positive results it has when principals leave their offices, walk the halls, and spend time in classrooms. This approach is powerful, and it works! Show notes and transcript: https://www.coolcatteacher.com/e866 Disclosure of Material Connection: This episode includes some affiliate links. Send us a Text Message.Want free PD? Check out our *new* Podcast PD!This podcast episode dives into the concept of appreciating teachers beyond the typical gestures and explores how a 6 Pillar Framework can create a school environment where teachers truly feel valued. Allyson Apsey, author of "Leading the Whole Teacher," emphasizes that feeling seen and heard is crucial for teachers. Her six pillars from the book address this need:Valued: This pillar goes beyond superficial appreciation events. It's about recognizing teachers as individuals, understanding their strengths, and creating a sense of belonging.Emotional Safety: Feeling safe to take risks and experiment fosters a growth mindset. Interpersonal conflicts and a lack of trust is one of the highest-ranking factors that can shatter this safety, hindering teacher well-being.Continuous Learner: When professional development aligns with teachers' interests and goals, it becomes a form of appreciation. It shows that the school values their growth and empowers them to take ownership of their learning journey.Decision Maker: Involving teachers in decision-making processes demonstrates trust and respect for their expertise. It allows them to feel like valued contributors, not just followers of top-down mandates.Positive Relationships: Allyson shares a simple (and concrete) check in system strengthens relationships and a sense of community and belonging. Healthy Workload: Feeling overwhelmed and unsupported sends a clear message of undervaluing a teacher's time and effort. By creating a manageable workload, schools demonstrate that they appreciate the well-being of their teachers.By implementing these six pillars, schools can move beyond empty gestures and create a culture of genuine appreciation where teachers feel seen, heard, and valued for their contributions.Want additional support? Allyson Apsey has been an educator for more than twenty-four years; a school leader for nineteen of those years. She is passionate about having a serendipity mindset, looking for the beautiful lessons that every experience holds. She tries to be transparent, vulnerable and supportive, and she doesn't ask questions unless she wants the answers. Despite the fact that she never wanted to set foot in a school again after high school graduation, there is nowhere else she'd rather spend her days than in classrooms. In fact, she doesn't even have a chair at her desk because she is moving around the school all day long. The challenges and delights of being a principal fill her days with joy. She enjoys nothing more than helping others be the very best they can be. Recognizing the significant impact trauma has had on many of our students, staff and families, Allyson is a Certified Trauma Practitioner in Education. The supports that students affected by trauma need are beneficial to all students because they are grounded in a foundational core of strong, positive relationships based on trust. Allyson is the author of a blog called Serendipity in Education (allysonapsey.com) has written five books: a middle grades chapter book called The Serendipity Journal, a picture book called The Princes of Serendip, and two professional learning books for educators called The Path to Serendipity and Through the Lens of Serendipity. Her most recent book, Leading the Whole Teacher, is an Amazon best-seller. She loves speaking to passionate groups as they work to be happy and effective people for the benefit of themselves and everyone around them. She is married to Jim, that man she met at the Orbit Room dance club all those years ago, and she has two amazing sons with him, Lain and Tyson. Key Takeaways: You do not have to deny there are hardships present to have a positive mindset that helps you move forward in a joyous manner filled with hope. Self awareness is about realizing the power that we have through our mindset to get what we need to make the changes around us for an improved situation. We are not responsible for what is. We are responsible for taking action based on what is. Teachers need to focus on taking care of the students because if they don't no one else will. Leaders need to focus on taking care of teachers because if they don't no one else will. The 6 pillars of Leading the Whole Teacher. Leaders need to make sure they're taking care of themselves.
