THE Presentations Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
Seamless Slides and Stellar Delivery. Unlocking AI's Potential in Presentations In Japan Something I had never heard of before called “Steampunk” popped up in my TikTok feed. Now I write a daily blog published on YouTube, LinkedIn, Facebook and X, called “Fare Bella Figura: Make a Good Impression, Be A Sharp Dressed Man” on the subject of classic men's wear for business. Obviously, I am interested in how we men choose to master and control our first impressions in public. Everyone is judging us based on how we appoint ourselves and that is before we have any chance to utter even one word. If that is the case, and it is, why not make an effort to control that first vital impression? Anyway, that is another podcast subject, so back to today's theme. These Steampunk videos were AI created and featured seriously “killer handsome” men wearing very, very cool Victorian era clothing. The imagery was amazing, fantastical, and addictive. Sadly, probably no one looked anything near that good in foggy Victorian London and few guys today could even come close to these AI images. It is all fake, and this is an important point to keep in mind when we are dealing with AI. This got me thinking about AI and fakery in the field of business presentations. Where is the line to discriminate between fakery and authenticity? Let's look at some of the AI tools and see where they are leading us. Canva, Beautiful.ai, Visme etc., use AI to arrange our basic slides into very sophisticated output. If we are not sure what style of visual presentation will best suit the content, then we can access help from Microsoft Designer and Google Slides AI. If we have numbers to represent on screen, then Infogram and Datawrapper can help. The AI will suggest the best chart type based on the data. I don't know that we need that much help though: for data over time use line graphs, for short-term comparisons use bar charts, and use pie charts for gauging proportional differences. If we are thinking about how to put the talk together, then ChatGPT, Claude and Jasper AI can craft a script as a base for us to work with. If we want a formal tone, we can command it or go for a conversational tone, and the AI will respond accordingly. If like me, you are not that red hot on grammar and punctuation, then Grammerly or ProWritingAid can make suggestions. They don't always get it right, so we have to maintain a certain amount of knowledge to intervene when needed. It is handy though to be reminded that you have started the last three sentences with the same word, so that we can introduce more variety into our prose. I haven't tried them myself yet, but I am told that Orai and Speeko will analyse my delivery in real time. I can get feedback on pacing, tone, filler words, modulation and pronunciation. I had to give a major keynote recently to an elite audience and if I had been more organised, I could have tried them out. I will use them the next time during my rehearsals. I wonder if they give us Good/Better feedback, rather than confidence sapping critique? By the way, a word to the wise, if you ever ask anyone to listen to your practice sessions, instruct them to give you only Good/Better feedback. Otherwise, their first inclination will usually be to criticise what you are doing and demotivate you. I have seen some speakers using Mentimeter and Slido, which are AI driven to facilitate real time audience interaction. We can run instant polls, pose questions, and get feedback during our presentation. We can do the same things analog too, but it looks cool to use these tools. I have seen simple bats with “Yes” on one side and “No” on the other used to gauge audience agreement with whatever the speaker is proposing and it works well. We can simply ask people to raise their hands in response to their agreement with the question or not and no tech involved. Personally I go for simplicity when presenting. I do recommend keeping a hawk-eyed accounting of the faces of the people in the audience. If you think that is too old school, you can try Beyond Verbal and Emotional AI. These tools will interpret audience facial reactions and voice tones to help you understand the engagement levels of the audience. All great stuff but I find watching their faces carefully does the same thing, and it is real time. There is no doubt AI is here to stay and capacity will only broaden and improve. We have to keep in mind, though, that these are just tools and not a substitute for our role as the speaker. I actually don't want my AI enhanced slide deck to be so spectacular that the audience stops watching me and becomes totally engrossed with what is on screen. We, the speaker, have to be the center of attention and the tools are at our command, rather than commanding us. That is why I don't like using videos. If they are to be used keep let's them super short. Like those handsome dudes in the Steampunk videos, the presentation is superb, but the AI is fake and we can never match what is being presented. We can dress ourselves in the same Victorian way, using fine fabrics, but we will never be that handsome and cool looking. We need to keep AI in perspective too, not get carried away with the tool set and forgetting about the human dimension aspect of the delivery. We, the presenters, must always be the main game, the core talent and the real focus for our audience. The tech has to be used in moderation and the speaker must be soley placed in the spotlight. Don't let the AI become the star like in those Steampunk videos I mentioned. We reserve that position for ourselves, always, everywhere and we allow no AI substitutes for us.

This Episode we're heading back into the vaults to bring you the unabridged version of our fantastic and extremely popular interview with Bec McKeown, a chartered psychologist with extensive experience in carrying out applied research for organisations including the UK Ministry of Defence and the founder and director of Mind Science, an independent organisation that works with cybersecurity professionals.Ever wanted to know the psychology behind cybersecurity? Bec takes us an a fascinating journey into the mind as we get acquainted with a smorgasbord of psychological concepts to help you understand your cybersecurity posture - especially during a dreaded cybersecurity incident!Key Takeaways:The curse of knowledge: Understanding what it's like to not understand cybersecurity from a technical perspective can be an advantage in helping you communicate better. By putting yourself in the shoes of the listener, you can convey complex ideas in a way that is easy to understand and relatableMicrolearning: Nobody wants to sit in training for three hours! Microlearning helps by breaking up information into bite-sized chunks that are easy to digest. It's also important to account for different learning styles and provide information in various formats.Amygdala hijacking: Cybercriminals leverage amygdala hijacking, which occurs when the amygdala activates the fight-or-flight response when there is no serious threat to a person's safety. It's essential to recognize the contextual cue that led you to act that way and develop strategies to deal with it before it happens.Awareness does not equal change in behaviour: One size doesn't fit all, and quantitative is usually valued over qualitative, which needs to change.Focus on Impact Skills, Not Just Technical Knowledge: Decision-making, communication, and collaboration are the foundational skills needed to navigate complex cyber threats.Show NotesImmersive LabsBec's Article in Immersive Labs on Workforce ResiliencyChristian Hunt's episode - Compromising PositionsArticle on Theory X and Theory Y - Mind ToolsInfluence by Robert CialdiniActionable Gamification - Yu-Kai ChouKirkpatrick Model - Mind ToolsCopywrite movies. ARKIV. Jayme and I were caught off guard by our nerves for this second in person workshop day. I think the reality was that we were using technology we were super familiar with running ourselves to promote more transparency and we weren't in control. Two type A's like to be in control! It was so good though and I think our biggest takeaways from this day and this pilot are: We individualize so much for our students, why don't we do the same for our teachers? Allow real vulnerable conversations and be open to suggestions for improvement When the teachers saw improvement in their main teaching role, they wanted it for their classrooms or personal life next. Jayme had 65% of her staff participate and we were looking for their feedback. I noticed in these responses they are the ones I get from the Organize 356® community. Accomplishment is the number one response I get when I ask people “How does it feel to be organized?” And this group of teachers were no different. This was after only 6 months of use too!! We used the Mentimeter app so that they could submit their answers via their phones so they could be open and vulnerable. We asked “What have you noticed about using the index cards?” Here were a few of the responses: Get things out of my head My ideas are organized I remember things better I can prioritize tasks Less stress Saves time Visibly see what I wanted to do but haven't yet. So the second question we asked them was if they were taking work home. I was shocked that more teachers didn't say yes. I really thought that was going to be higher until Jayme explained her expectations. Jayme has communicated with her staff how to effectively use their time. Just because it's called the Friday Workbox® AKA Teacher Workbox, you don't have to do it on Fridays. She explained to them that she stays late on most Thursdays for games. Since the games don't start until 6, she has 3 hours to process her workbox. This is helping them not bring work home. Here were the results to that second question. No (9) Yes (15) Sometimes (9) I was also curious to see how many teachers were using digital organization and to what extent. I was shocked that paper was the highest. I thought for sure because of all the buzz that it would be higher digital or hybrid, but nope. In the society of America, a capitalist country, we have our own rules within each organization, so there is not this one, main digital stream. This leads to paper!! And by the way, index cards are paper. I've been challenged on this. Think about it...would you rather have your teachers write something down quickly on an index card and continue instruction OR would you like them to pull out their phones? I would hope if you choose the latter there would be an expectation that it not be in the middle of instruction. But then two things happen, the teacher is trying to remember to put it in their phones later AND all the rabbit trails with all their shiny pathways distract the teachers and who knows how long that quick task of entering the idea or task will take! So what were the results of this question? … All Paper (17) All Digital (3) Hybrid of both (13) And lastly I was feeling like, what else do they want? I had taken the time to teach the system of the Teacher Friday Workbox®. I had spent time with the Special Education team, getting them set. It was no surprise with success in their teacher role, now they wanted it in their classrooms and at home. Each teacher was invited to planning day. They got to plan in their personal life. There is so much invisible work required from teachers and they were getting relief from all those responsibilities. And that is why Jayme and I wanted to do this. We want educators to be fulfilled in home and work life, we want teacher retention and this is one way to achieve that! In this episode of The Writing Glitch podcast, I had the pleasure of interviewing Joe Houghton, a remarkable educator, photographer, and University College Dublin Innovation Academy fellow. Our conversation delved into the evolving landscape of education, particularly in the context of remote learning and the COVID-19 pandemic. Here are some key takeaways from our discussion:Embracing the Challenges and Opportunities of Remote TeachingJoe shared his experiences with the sudden shift to online teaching due to the pandemic. He emphasized the importance of adapting to this new environment and finding innovative ways to engage students. By incorporating tools like breakout rooms, Kahoot, and Mentimeter, Joe has created dynamic and interactive learning experiences for his students. The Power of Storytelling in EducationBoth Joe and I are strong advocates for storytelling as an educational tool. Joe's approach to teaching involves using stories to make complex concepts more relatable and memorable for students. This technique enhances understanding and fosters a deeper connection between educators and learners.Prioritizing Accessibility and InclusivityA significant part of our conversation focused on the importance of accessibility in education. Joe's journey with his son Danny, who has dysgraphia and hypermobility, highlighted the need for educators to be aware of and accommodate diverse learning needs. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and accessible technology ensure all students have equal opportunities to succeed. The Impact of COVID-19 on Educational PracticesThe pandemic has undoubtedly been a catalyst for change in the education sector. Joe and I discussed how it has prompted educators to rethink traditional teaching methods and embrace more flexible and inclusive approaches. The shift towards online learning has opened up new possibilities for innovation and underscored the importance of adaptability in facing challenges.Looking Ahead: The Future of EducationAs we look to the future, it's clear that the education landscape will continue to evolve. The experiences and lessons learned during the pandemic will undoubtedly shape teaching practices for years. Educators like Joe Houghton are at the forefront of this transformation, leading the way in creating engaging, accessible, and effective learning environments for all students. In conclusion, my conversation with Joe Houghton was a powerful reminder of the resilience and creativity of educators in the face of adversity. His insights into remote teaching, storytelling, and accessibility are valuable lessons for anyone involved in the field of education. As we navigate the ever-changing world of learning, it's clear that adaptability, innovation, and inclusivity will be vital to empowering students and shaping the future of education.Notable Quote from Joe Houghton: "As educators, we have to pick up on these cues from mainstream media and build this stuff into what we're doing. Having a visual eye for photography also translates into all the other education. And then, hopefully, I'll bring in, as I've done in the last couple of years, a little bit more awareness of accessibility. Because again, that was a bit of a moment for me when one of my students came up to me and said that he had dyslexia."Contact Joe: Linked InThe Plus One PodcastContact Cheri: Website ★ Support this podcast ★

Mike von der Nahmer is a sound researcher, music therapist, scientific collaborator at the German Aerospace Center and composer. With over 30 stage works and 100+ compositions, he holds international recognition. He has collaborated with GRAMMY, Kenwood, Sony BMG, Rolls Royce and BMW, and his music has been featured in TV series like NOVA. Mike shares with us some sonification projects in various domains, such as weather patterns, language, the brain, and sound design in autonomous vehicles. For example, he gives us insights into his work at the German Aerospace Center (the German NASA), where he works on the sonification of air traffic control. Today, you will not only hear us talking but also experience different sound worlds. Because Mike brought some sound files to the conversation, we hear different sound layers from an air traffic game and examples of what he calls 'mood compositions' for Rolls Royce, BMW and Mini that are central in the sound strategy of these car brands. We end the conversation with a longer piece of about five minutes of sonification of curves that Mike co-created with two outstanding mathematicians in Luxemburg. So be prepared to hear about pioneering thoughts connecting sound, science, and human experience. Learning is always hard work, but sometimes it feels easier and we're more motivated to persist if there's an element of play involved. What can we learn about learning in the context of games that we might use to foster student learning in higher education? That's a topic we've explored several times here on the podcast, and I'm glad to share another discussion of this topic in today's episode. Miguel “Miko” Nino is the director of the Office of Online Learning at the University of North Carolina Pembroke. He is also chair of the UNC Online Leadership Collaboration and serves on the review boards for the Journal of Online Learning Research, Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education, and the Journal of Technology and Teaching Education. He's also an old friend of Leading Lines producer, Julaine Fowlin. She sat down recently with Miko (virtually) to talk about the elements of games and play that we can bring into the learning environment. Miko talks about his passion for learning and games and reasons to “gamify” the learning experiences we design, and he shares lots of practical tools and strategies for doing so. Mental health in the workplace is often ignored or sidelined. Not to mention that it is difficult to talk about it in the first place. And yet, pressures in our work environment has been rising, not least because of the pandemic. How we can look out for ourselves and others is a question I'll be discussing with Graham McCartney and Dave Horsfall. Dave and Graham are leading the UK charity Jonathan's Voice, which was born under tragic circumstances. As Graham says in the podcast: if you have difficulties in coping, don't struggle alone. Reach out! Your employer may provide services such as mental health aiders or services provided by your HR department. In addition to that most if not all countries provide helplines and advice on mental health. As we round out our Clubhouse conversation with Crystal Garcia, we talk about considerations for groups planning hybrid events, including pricing and moments of engagement. When it comes to hosting a hybrid event, reinvesting money that is not spent on travel or hotel expenses is a great way to draw in the virtual audience. This can be done by sending them something beforehand to make them feel like they're a part of the experience without actually physically being in attendance. In some of our more recent events we have been using Mentimeter, a collaborative word cloud software that allows groups to share a word or phrase. Interactive elements like this are great for engaging the group in the room as well as those tuning in online. Crystal also shares about some interactive games she has used at her own virtual events to allow everyone in attendance to participate. Crystal ends the discussion with a mic drop phrase: “If you can't do great things, do small things great," reminding us of the ripple effect that occurs when we are intentional about even the smallest things. Crystal is a Digital Strategist, Virtual Events Producer, Online Business Manager, AND the founder of Propelcon. Check out her company online and on Instagram!
