Unser heutiger Gast hat Wirtschaft in Furtwangen, Hagen, Moskau und London studiert. Seinen Master of Science hat er an der “London School of Economics and Political Science” - kurz LSE - in Management , Organisations and Governance abgelegt. Der von uns ebenfalls sehr geschätzte Autor Daniel Pink fasst “The Serendipity Mindset” für uns so zusammen: “A bracing and hopeful antidote to a world addicted to efficiency and control." Ihr seid bei On the Way to New Work - heute mit Christian Busch.

Do you believe that some people are just luckier than others even though they have not done anything special to create their good fortune? According to my guest this week, NYU Professor Christian Busch, good luck doesn't happen purely by chance. He says it can be learned and leveraged.  In his book, The Serendipity Mindset: The Art and Science of Creating Good Luck, Christian explains that serendipity isn't about luck being out of our control. It's about seeing links that others don't, combining these observations strategically, and learning how to detect the moments when unconnected ideas merge to form new opportunities. Exploring serendipity from a scientific perspective, Christian argues that there are ways we can foster the conditions to allow serendipity to grow. Drawing from biology, chemistry, management, and information systems and using examples of people from all walks of life, he shows how you can use serendipity to make life better at work, at home, and everywhere. It is remarkable to note that Christian's early track record could not have predicted where he has landed today. In his own words, he was a restless, rebellious kid who was “in the 5% of the class that enabled the top 95%.” He dropped out of high school and, at eighteen, went wild in his first car, ending up in a near-fatal multi-car crash. Needless to say, and fortunately, this was a turning point for him. Christian finished high school and with determination applied to dozens of universities. Once accepted, he dove into his studies, fueling his curious mind. Christian went on to earn his master's degree and later a Ph.D. In this week's Work From The Inside Out podcast, follow Christian's journey and work: Christian is the director of the CGA Global Economy Program at New York University (NYU) and teaches at the London School of Economics (LSE). Summary Steve Jobs famously said, “You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backward.” Today's guest would respectfully disagree. As guest Dr. Christian Busch writes, “serendipity is not just about a coincidence that happens to us, but it is actually through the process of spotting and connecting the dots do we start to see bridges where others see gaps.” This episode will explore that process. Thus, Serendipity is “unexpected good luck resulting from unplanned moments in which proactive decisions lead to positive outcomes. Serendipity is the hidden force in the world.” Serendipity is smart luck versus blind luck. Imagine yourself at a dinner party filled with people you don't know. As you head to the appetizer tray to get another snack, there's someone already standing there. You have two options: one, you could make boring small talk by asking how they know the host or what they do for a living. But according to Christian Busch, this is also a moment where you could create a serendipitous event. You could ask that stranger what their biggest passion in life is, what kinds of challenges they are facing, and the answers might lead the two of you to create a personal, professional, or creative relationship. Christian Busch is the author of the books The Serendipity Mindset and Connect the Dots: The art and science of creating good luck, which outlines the psychology behind creating your own luck by opening yourself up to new experiences. Christian is a professor at New York University's Center for Global Affairs and also teaches at the London School of Economics.Christian and Greg talk about how we can all create these serendipitous moments for ourselves and how the most successful business leaders and entrepreneurs embody this desire for serendipity. Christian explains how creating luck is like a muscle we need to exercise. They also discuss real world examples of organizations embracing change and instability as a way to learn and find success.Episode Quotes:Do you need to work hard to get more luck?10:48: The traditional approach to luck is either luck or hard work. Or this idea that there's a tension between, if you're a hard worker, then you created that yourself, and you were in control to do that. And then luck is the thing that happens. And you know what our research shows: no, a lot of people work extremely hard to have more luck, and that's in a way in itself then a skillset. A skill set that you're able to cultivate serendipity.02:32: Serendipity is really about smart luck. It's about the luck we create by how we react to the unexpected end, and how we can create the positive unexpected. Informed vs. uninformed experimentation15:23: There's informed experimentation, where you learn from mistakes and build on it. And then there's uninformed, which is just naive, and you kind of spend money. And that's what we all want to avoid in some way or the other. It's not a bad thing to cultivate serendipity07:40: The old-school leadership style tries to legitimize this illusion of control that you pretend to always be in control. You think you get power by pretending that you know everything and do everything. But the shift is essentially saying, "No, it's not bad if you cultivate serendipity."Show Links:Recommended Resources:Viktor FranklPsychology Today- Creating meaningful connections in a disconnected worldGuest Profile:Faculty Profile at New York UniversityFaculty Profile at London School of EconomicsProfessional Profile on Psychology TodayChristian Busch on LInkedInChristian Busch on TwitterChristian Busch on InstagramChristian Busch on TEDxConnecticutCollegeHis Work:The Serendipity Mindset: The Art and Science of Creating Good Luck (US Version)Connect the Dots: The Art and Science of Creating Good Luck (UK Version)

Serendipity: the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way. “Getting stuck in traffic” doesn't sound like it fits the definition of serendipity, but it does for me and this week's guest, Noah Graff of Graff-Pinkert and the Swarfcast podcast! Noah and I connected when he caught an episode of my podcast while stuck in traffic, and it led to a great conversation about his experiences as a treasure hunter who travels around the world to find interesting pieces of manufacturing equipment, and how he uses a serendipity mindset to find new connections, overcome challenges, and turn outdated or unusable equipment into new treasures! 2:00 – What does it mean to be a “treasure hunter” in manufacturing? 5:00 – Someone's trash always has the potential to be someone else's treasure—you just need to have the right mindset to find it! 6:22 – It's amazing what you can find by keeping an open mind and always looking for the unexpected 9:00 – Serendipity isn't just about being in the right place at the right time. You also have to be in the right mindset. 9:42 – What's the difference between mindfulness and luck? 11:30 – Many leaders have either a growth mindset or a fixed mindset, but leaders can also consider a “serendipity” mindset 12:00 – To embrace a serendipity mindset, one strategy is serendipity bombs, or seeking multiple people who can help you complete a task, like finding a piece of machinery or doing research for an article 14:00 – Another tactic is serendipity hooks, or opening up a conversation to find new opportunities 15:45 – By being open to new conversations with new people, you can find great and unexpected opportunities—don't be afraid to be the spark for a conversation!

It's about the luck we create ourselves through our own actions in how we react to the unexpected or how we create the unexpected. It's either making accidents meaningful or creating meaningful accidents.” (8:09)“Do you let the situation define you, or do you try to define the situation? In terms of this whole idea that, yes, we cannot always pick the situation we're in, but we can always pick our response to it.” (46:10)“How do you bring the best out of people and out of yourself so that when you are on your deathbed, you're saying, "Okay, well, it was worth it"?” (53:30)In this episode, we also talked about:What is serendipity? It's a practical guide to setting up the right conditions for serendipity to occur and being ready to capitalize on it when it does. While you cannot control the results or the specific outcomes, you can increase the odds of luck occurring in your life. So, let's explore some of my favorite insights from The Serendipity Mindset.CLICK HERE FOR THE FULL ARTICLE, BOOK LINKS, AND MORE:

They told Christian Busch that it would be 'academic suicide' to do a PhD on the science of luck. But it turns out that luck isn't a random force at all: the results may be unpredictable, but the process of becoming luckier is a simple matter of creating more connections and joining the dots more effectively.  In this conversation, he explains more about how to become luckier by adopting a 'serendipity mindset', and also how you can benefit from 'peak-hour writing' to get your own book written.  This just might be your lucky day...

“Are you willing to be uncomfortable and still do what you need to do?”  I was all pumped up from last week's episode on the Serendipity Mindset to be better at reaching out, being open and making connections. However I noticed that at my first opportunity (a ward trunk or treat activity) I did the same thing I always did.  So I thought well maybe I just need some prompts and some practice.  But then after listening to a coaching call I also realized that I need to be ok feeling the discomfort and awkwardness of talking to people I don't know very well and that is not really going to go away.  I need to instead be willing to be uncomfortable and do what I want to do anyway, like getting to know more people.  So that is what this week's episode is all about.  I also share a few conversation starting tips to also give you a few tools to practice and help you start making more connections.  For more information see www.findingthefloor.com/ep070Sign up for my newsletter - Fridge Notes Here.

Dr. Busch is the Director of the Global Economy Program at New York University's Center for Global Affairs where he teaches on purpose-driven leadership, impact entrepreneurship, social innovation, and emerging markets. FIND CHRISTIAN ONLINE WEBSITE: https://theserendipitymindset.com/ LINKEDIN: https://www.linkedin.com/in/christianwbusch/ TWITTER: https://twitter.com/ChrisSerendip QUOTES [00:05:09] "Serendipity is really this kind of smart luck. So, it's very different from the blind luck." [00:11:00] "In the end, it's all about connecting dots, right? It's all about saying, what is that kind of moment where, like you bring two potentially previously disparate things together." [00:14:03] "I think then essentially, once we overcome this bias to not underestimate the unexpected, we can create this muscle. That's the muscle that allows us to essentially make the best out of it." [00:15:45] "We all feel like impostors at times. We all feel like, you know, that we haven't figured it all out. And that's fine." [00:23:36] "I will still everyday talk with at least one other person to make them feel better about themselves. And by doing that, that gives me meaning. And I think that kind of reminded me, right, that in every situation you can always reframe something." [00:30:06] "The core idea is really that it's not only about knowledge that's power, but it's really kind of informational things that get seated. Then you can create knowledge out of it, unexpected." [00:33:58] "We create the most serendipity when we think constantly about how does this relate now to something I've read, to something I talked with a friend, and how can I introduce them to someone and something? " [00:41:50] "Serendipity is all about, somehow, sagacity. And it is all about kind of seeing something in the moment and making sense out of it. But, also then again, having the tenacity to to go through with it." [00:44:18] "I think the courage that comes from being vulnerable, and the courage that comes from admitting that you haven't had it all figured out then empowers other people as well. Because it gives them the license to come up with new ideas." SHOW NOTES [00:01:38] Guest introduction [00:02:51] What kind of kid were you in high school? [00:03:25] How different is life now than what you had imagined it would be? [00:04:07] what was the journey like from rebellious teenager to now Dr. Christian Busch? [00:05:00] How do you define serendipity? What is this thing? [00:06:32] The three types of serendipity [00:08:46] does serendipity have an anatomy? And if so, what does that anatomy look like? This week's guest, Dr Christian Basch, describes himself as a practical philosopher. He is also Author of the new book the Serendipity Mindset, and Director of NYU's Global Economy program. In this absorbing interview Christian describes his upbringing in Germany to a cerebral intellectual father and empathetic and loving mother. Christian explains how his supportive parents instilled a sense of belief that whatever his focus in life, everything was possible. Christian discusses his wayward upbringing, his search for where to channel his energies and the life defining car crash that made him re-evaluate his attitude to life and set him on the path to writing the Serendipity Mindset. He maps out how In 2008 in London he formed his innovative global Sandbox network and describes the community they build as a serendipity accelerator. We cover purpose and social entrepreneurship and how he has worked with many of the top CEO's to focus on how their companies can link their purpose to the sustainable development goals. If you want to jump forward to where we get into the specifics of the Serendipity Mindset head to AROUND 40 MIN min. Christian explains how the Serendipity Mindset is grounded in creating the structures and mindsets that enable people to create their own luck and I ask Christian to explain the role of procrastination in serendipity and what he calls productive procrastination. He sets out why spotting something unexpected and connecting dots when you see them is key to a serendipity mindset. He explains why sagacity and tenacity are the core elements to unlocking serendipity and why we need to avoid seeing life linear and more a series of random twisting lines and being prepared to see failure as an opportunity. Christian covers fear of failure, loss and overcoming self limiting beliefs and worthiness. I ask Christian about the role of his work to affect change in organizational behavior, and how brand values can define meeting agendas, and examining and learning from failure to solve large problems. We also discuss polarization, diversity, inclusion and seeking common denominators to solve our contemporary challenges. Finally we cover serendipity scores and the value to reframing behaviors. Christian describes how as a daily habit and a life philosophy it can transform how we view uncertainty and the unexpected from a threat to an ally. I hope you are empowered by the mind altering playbook of Dr Christian Busch. This week we met with our first guest, Christian Busch and had a special conversation about serendipity. What is serendipity? How can we actively manage situations to make them more serendipitous? Does luck favor the prepared? How can we increase the surface area of luck? This episode gives a look into how to connect dots to access the serendipities in our lives and how reframing situations and looking at things from unexpected perspectives can make a huge difference. One of our favorite takeaways this week is that we cannot always control the stimuli that may affect us. However we can control our response to it. If we can redefine key moments and reframe our perspective in relation to these stimuli, we can create enormous opportunities for serendipity.
