Religions of the World: Questions, Challenges, and New Directions (Equinox Publishing, 2024) is a world religions textbook that provides a critical introduction to the social, political, and cultural interests that inform how people describe and identify with religion. One of its goals is to provide a sense of methodological transparency that few, if any, other textbooks today offer. The book opens with an Introduction that discusses contemporary methodological concerns in the study of religion, with special focus on the World Religions Paradigm. This is followed by ten (10) chapters, six (6) of which discuss a distinct religion and four (4) of which discuss regional traditions. This organization is intentional and self-conscious, as the authors discuss how these scholarly categories (distinct tradition vs. regional tradition) shape the ways that both insiders and outsiders discuss, practice, and engage religion in their daily lives. Leslie Dorrough Smith is Professor of Religious Studies at Avila University and a member of the Women's and Gender Studies faculty. She is the author of Righteous Rhetoric: Sex, Speech, and the Politics of Concerned Women for America (2014) and Compromising Positions Sex Scandals, Politics, and American Christianity (2019). "When I took someone who felt lost, and I would suddenly see the clouds lift and that lightbulb come on for them – that's where I discovered my joy.” - Gina Creek Did you know there's a difference between feeling happy and experiencing joy? Experts often describe happiness as a positive state of overall well-being and impacts your outlook on the meaning of life. However, joy is felt in moments such as listening to a friend make a toast or receiving a hug from a dear friend. When we experience joy, it's less about that overall sense of how life is going, and more about discovering what moments touch your heart. Join Dr. Michelle Robin as she invites Gina Creek to share how she began to lean into those joyful moments early in life, which eventually impacted her career path in a profound way and now helps her experience that same joy throughout the workday. She'll share about her journey into healthcare and why it was the people who mentored and surrounded her that became a key ingredient to learning what lit up her heart. About Today's Guest: Gina Creek is the Vice President and Chief People Officer for the Mid-America Region. She leads human resources at AdventHealth's hospitals and clinics in Kansas and Wisconsin, including AdventHealth Shawnee Mission, AdventHealth South Overland Park, AdventHealth Ottawa, and AdventHealth Durand. In this role, she leads human resources initiatives, including attracting, motivating, and retaining top talent; performance management; leadership development and change management for the health care system's information technology team. She then led the system-wide Emerging Leader Program, developing high potential leaders for executive roles. Starting in 2018, she led AdventHealth's Leadership Institute, developing multi-level leadership programs and interventions to meet the needs of an 80,000-member workforce. Creek earned her doctorate in leadership and learning from Vanderbilt University, her master's in organizational development from Avila University and her bachelor's education from Union College. She is also a publication author in leadership culture. In this episode Garth interviewed Jordan Wagge from Avila University in Kansas City, MO. Jordan is one of the international leaders in the Collaborative Replications and Education Project (CREP), with her focus on projects through a social justice, diversity, and sustainability lens. These interests may harken back to undergraduate days, when she started as a political science major before switching to psychology. She specializes in teaching statistics and research methods (to both undergraduate and graduate students), and recently, she's been examining confirmation bias in one's teaching. Jordan's habits pay off -- whether it's a preference for multi-tasking so that she can double-dip, or being persistent, as in her recent award of an NSF grant after three submissions over five years.
By special arrangement with the Western Psychological Association held in April 2022 in Portland, Oregon, PsychSessions recorded select conference sessions and recorded interviews. What a delight to hear the WPA distinguished speaker Dr. Jordan Wagge from Avila University in Kansas City, MO. As you will hear in this recording, Jordan was introduced by WPA then-President Dr. Jon Grahe from Pacific Lutheran University. The title of her talk: Our Students Can Be Our Scientists – The Collaborative Replication and Education Project (CREP) We are so pleased to be able to include a PDF version of Dr. Wagge's slides from her talk and thank you again to WPA for providing the opportunity to record these important moments. Because of the generosity of Dr. Wagge and the Western Psychological Association, PsychSessions can provide access to this professional development opportunity freely.

Community America Credit Union strives to teach individuals from adolescents to adults about financial literacy. When your financial health is not great your mental health can take a hit, too. Setting goals and creating a budget are both important aspects of financial well-being. Starting small, like tracking your spending for 30 days, is a good way to start your journey towards financial literacy. When you start small with your finances you will experience less stress. Chronic, physical, and emotional stress can lead to a cascade of events that result in high blood pressure, sleep disorders, and muscle breakdown that then cause inflammation which influences cholesterol or plaque deposit in the heart. Wilt talks about how he got started as a cardiologist and his passion for talking with and educating patients. Wilt discusses the whole-body connection in regards to heart health. It's important that each patient is given an individualized approach. There are several different types of cardiologists: invasive and non-invasive. Diet and lifestyle are two of the most important things people can do to support their heart health. When managing your heart health it's important to have an open line of communication with your providers. It's also critical to understand that you have to meet your providers halfway. Three Takeaways From Today's Episode: Start your journey towards financial literacy by tracking your spending for one month. Prioritize heart health by pursuing a healthy diet and active lifestyle. Reduce stress and support your well-being by going on 30-minute walk five days a week. One of the most exciting aspects of our C-10 program is how our graduating seniors will be able to receive a C-10 Leaders scholarship. On top of that, though, we have partner schools in the region that are willing to go above and beyond that to help the students realize their dreams even more. One of those schools is Avila University here in Kansas City. We are pleased and honored to be joined this week by Avila's president, Dr. Ronald Sleptiza. After growing up in the Washington, D.C. area, Dr. Slepitza has worked at the University of Maryland (10 years), Creighton University (9 yrs), Xavier University (13 years), and now at Avila for almost 15 years. Additionally, he has been involved with a mentoring program through the Leawood Rotary for more than 10 years, is an Ambassador for KC Scholars, and has served on a number of local and regional boards.LINKS:For more information about the C-10 Mentoring & Leadership program for high school students, including the application process for current high school freshmen and sophomores, visit our website. For all episodes of the C-10 podcast and ways you can listen, click here. For more information about this month's presenting sponsor, Precision Printing, please visit PrecisionPrintKC.com.If you'd like to make a comment, have a suggestion for a future guest, or your company would like to help underwrite this podcast, please visit our contact page.

Our podcast's first panel features Jerusalem Farm founders in a discussion on the formation of the community and each of their journeys to JFarm. Sunny and Jessie were speakers when a Jerusalem Farm panel joined us at Avila in November of 2017, where they spoke about Laudauto Si. David Armstrong has served as the Director of Mission Effectiveness and Campus Ministries at Avila University for the past 18 years. His personal experiences at Nazareth Farm in West Virginia and his relentless enthusiasm lead him to dream of an urban farm in KC. Jessie Schiele is the Executive Director at Jerusalem Farm, which involves a lot of paperwork—her favorite of which is handmade & upcycled thank you notes. She and her husband Jordan currently have 5 children and spend their weekends electric biking around KCMO. Sunny Hamrick has lived at Jerusalem Farm for six years and serves as the farm manager, coordinating the gardens and orchard. He is also a worksite leader (and JFarm's best finisher—putting amazing detail into bathroom and kitchen remodels for low-income families). Sunny leaves time for rock climbing, music making, and fighting the broken systems as an anti-war activist. Jerusalem Farm is a Catholic intentional community located in the Historic Northeast Neighborhood of Kansas City MO. Built on the four cornerstones of Prayer, Community, Service, and Simplicity, we strive to transform our lives and the lives of those around us through service retreat experiences, sustainable living, and home repair.

Tomorrow is the official start of Winter and with it often comes what has become known as the Winter Blues. Christmas, and all of its festivities, is just five (5) days away. Unfortunately, it has become more and more commercialized. This year proves to be no different, dwarfing its true meaning; one of love and sacrifice for the world versus getting and giving the "perfect gift" which, more times than not, leaves bank accounts in the red. As daylight savings time reduces the daylight and the amount of time folks are outdoors, a type of depression known as seasonal emotional disorder surfaces; just around the time of Hanukkah, Christmas, and Kwaanza. Other concerns that contribute to this soar during these holidays and their celebrations include loneliness, economic struggles, fatigue, family disputes, and the loss of loved ones. Our guest, Maquestia Griggsby, will walk us through ways to recognize and combat these Blues. Griggsby holds a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from Avila University in Kansas City, MO. She is a certified life coach and enjoys helping others discover how to achieve their personal and professional goals. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with friends and family, having quiet time, salsa dancing, cooking, learning Spanish, and writing blogs about various motivational and health related topics. She is the proud mom of a highly creative teenage son, who loves writing, music, and expressing himself through videography. You are invited to call in during the broadcast with your questions and comments at: (646) 716.8344. Feel free to contact Maquestia via email at: maquestiagriggsby@gmail.com.

On This Episode If you want to understand why you should consider playing JUCO baseball, this episode is for you! We dive into JUCO recruiting, a day in the life of a JUCO player, and insight into the way a JUCO practice is structured at Kansas City Kansas CC with assistant coach Andrew Kreiling. Kreiling was a standout player and Academic All-American at KCKCC before transferring to Pittsburg State University, where he played the outfield and was named an All-Conference player as a senior. After interning with Pitt State’s strength and conditioning program, Kreiling joined the staff at Avila University in Kansas City, where he served as a volunteer and graduate assistant over 3 seasons. On the field for Avila, he worked with the outfielders and served a year as the hitting coach. Off the field, he earned a Master’s of Business Administration. With our seventh episode, we are pleased to rebroadcast an audio essay composed and performed by SLU's own Abigail Lambke (Assistant Professor of English at Avila University) for the journal Harlot (http://harlotofthearts.org/). Of this audio essay, she writes, "Many of us are familiar with the name Walter Ong, and some of us have read him, either pieces of his famous Orality and Literacy, or the often anthologized “The Writer’s Audience is Always a Fiction.” Ong’s scholarship was concerned with sound, with the transition from oral culture to literate culture, and the way technology impacts communication. In that way, Ong was a forerunner of Sonic Rhetorics because his scholarship suggests how sounded words, or oral/aural words, affect the relationship of language to knowledge. Many of us have read him, but how many have listened to him? I mean listened not metaphorically, but literally listened to his voice. In this audio essay, I contend that in listening to Walter Ong, we can expand our understanding of his scholarship and approach to sonic rhetoric"
In this episode, Angie Heer talks with M&C about the importance of engaging different generations of donors and leveraging data to make those connections possible.

This week on Tell Somebody. Dead Man Walking author Sister Helen Prejean, and Staci Pratt, state coordinator for Missourians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty (MADP). If someone viciously and brutally murdered a loved one of yours – a child, a spouse, a parent - could you get past rage and grief to forgive? Or even just to accept? I'm not sure I could. Unless we've experienced such a loss, most of can't ever know for sure. I hope I never have to find out. But as citizens, don't we all have an obligation to consider the issue? Society has to deal with such, otherwise we leave it to surviving loved ones to forgive or not. To act in retribution or not. Sister Helen Prejean returned to Kansas City on October 30 2015 thanks to MADP and The Center for Global Studies and Social Justice at Avila University. In between her speaking engagements at Avila University and Unity on the Plaza in Kansas City, I recorded interviews with Sister Helen and with Staci Pratt, State Coordinator for MADP.
