That's why it was so good to catch up with him to talk about that history, and the recent string of “world record” claims coming out of Nazare. Andrew Cotton is a big wave surfer and Red Bull athlete. Growing up in North Devon, he started at 7 and it became his life. He left school and worked in a local surfboard factory until the age of 25 to fund his surf trips. At this point he figured it wasn't going to sustain him financially so he re-trained as a plumber but this made it clear to him that his real passion lay in big wave surfing. So, with a friend he set about creating online content which, combined with his talent, led him to picking up some sponsors which enabled him to follow his dreams. He spends much of his time in Nazare in Portugal which is home to the biggest surf able waves in the world. It was there in November 2017 that he broke his back surfing a 75ft wave in a huge wipeout. Thankfully he made a full recovery and a year later her was back surfing those mammoth waves.Cotty and I met at a Wings for Life event, which is the Red Bull charity who's goal is to find a cure for spinal cord injury where he ran a breathwork session. It was here I experienced first hand the effects that the breath can have on your mind and your physiology - truly feeling ‘high on my own supply.'We speak about how he gets into a flow state and about the power of the breath in pushing through the limits we set ourselves. We talk about fear and how he overcomes its and doesn't let his mind ‘get in the way' when tackling the biggest waves ever surfed. His advice felt totally applicable to life in general, from treating the journey like a marathon not a sprint, embracing failure and surrounding yourself with great people that inspire you and help you move forwards. You can find Andrew on Instagram here and Sophie here.Find out more about Wings for Life here and join their fantastic World Run in May 2022.

The world of big-wave surfing is populated by an elite coterie of high-profile athletes from all over the planet. Andrew Cotton, who sits down with Don Letts for this episode of Joining the Dots, is a humble young surfer from North Devon - an unlikely member of this rarified subculture. ‘Cotty’ shot to surf world fame in 2016 when, in front of a battery of lenses at Nazare in Portugal, he rode one of the biggest, most spectacular waves ever documented. When he sat down in the Letts bunker, Cotty was strapped up and healing from a broken vertebrae suffered whilst plying his madcap trade and hoping to recover for the coming big-wave season. Stories were shared. Motivations were explored. Two worlds collide in a leafy backyard in West London. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

“One wave changed my life and put me on the map.” - Andrew Cotton. You don’t want to miss this one. Champion cyclists Philip Hindes and Callum Skinner take a detour into the world of surfing with their first non-cycling guest; Red Bull Athlete and Big Wave Surfer, Andrew Cotton.Cotton’s inspiring story starts with him selling wetsuits and making surfboards in the early days. He even trained as a plumber and a lifeguard. Then, in 2014, one huge 70ft wave changed his life. You might have seen the headlines: British Surfer Rides World’s Biggest Wave. But, just as quickly as you can make it, it can crumble in a flash. When the best looking wave he’d ever seen quickly turned into the worst, Cotton was dragged through the surf and left lying on the shore with a broken back. He explains the surfing disaster first hand, as well as the lead up to the fateful accident. We talk to Cotton about chasing storms, respecting the ocean, sharks and the surfing spots he loves. This fearless surfer also explains how he wanted to get back into the ocean following his recovery, finding his flow, free-diving and pushing himself further as an athlete. The UK might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of big wave surfing but Andrew Cotton is changing that. When Andrew left school he initially worked at a surfboard factory until age 25 when he re-trained as a plumber and began to realize his passion was in big wave surfing. In 2012 he towed American surfer Garrett McNamara into what the Guinness Book of World Records confirmed as the biggest wave ever surfed. Since then, Andrew has surfed some massive waves himself and is continuously searching for the biggest wave.

Andrew Cotton (@andrew_cotton) is, according to British newspaper The Daily Mail, Britain’s most famous plumber. He’s also one of the world’s most accomplished big wave surfers and in 2014 riding a wave estimated to be 80 feet high only narrowly missed claiming the world record for the biggest wave ever surfed. It was Andrews father who first introduced him to the sport as a young man, the same person who then sat him down in his early 20s after he’d lost a couple of his sponsors and told him he needed to get a job and get on with his life. Andrew complied, completed his plumbing apprenticeship and got a job. Torn between his love of surfing and a career, he backed himself and with the support of his wife turned all his efforts back to surfing. Today, as a Red Bull athlete, Andrew travels the world in search of perfect waves and a dream to ride the biggest of all time. He speaks to large corporation’s regularly on topics including high-stakes decision making and the like. In 2014 he traveled to Brooklyn, New York to speak at TedYouth, the division of Ted that caters for middle school and high school students. To learn more about Andrew visit his website here. We caught up as he prepared for the big wave season in Portugal. Amongst my attempt to figure out the sport of surfing in one conversation, there are some real gems here. We discuss life’s turning points, mental preparation and his thoughts on goal setting. Full episode info and show notes: www.wearelookingsideways.com Andrew ‘Cotty’ Cotton is probably the UK’s most high profile surfers and one of the foremost big wave surfers in the world right now. Along with his close friend Garrett McNamara, he’s one of the handful of surfers to pioneer the notoriously heavy beachbreak Nazare in Portugal. His feats, such as towing Garrett into what is considered one of the largest waves ever ridden, back in 2011, routinely make headlines around the world – especially in the UK where he’s achieved some level of mainstream notoriety as much for the fact that he’s a qualified plumber as for his big wave charging. As ever with mainstream media coverage of action sports, these descriptions of Andrew’s feats are massively reductive. Because the reality is that Cotty is one of the most respected watermen in the world today, and he’s travelled a long, hard way from his surfing beginnings on windswept Saunton Beach near where he grew up in Devon. In this conversation, recorded at Red Bull Studios in London in early 2017, we cover a lot of ground – his early surf apprenticeship, his first exposure to really big waves, and his early years working in a surfboard factory and – yes, as a plumber. It’s a great conversation with a fascinating, thoughtful lad, so get stuck in to Andrew Cotton on surfing big waves. Thanks to Nick Smith (www.hiddensound.tv) for post-production help and Matt Ward (https://linguistine.com) for the theme tune.
