Today Mary is talking to Dr Karen L. Bacon. Karen is a plant ecologist and palaeoecologist based in Botany & Plant Sciences at the National University of Ireland, Galway. She completed her PhD in plant palaeoecology in 2012 in University College Dublin. After spending several years in the UK, she returned to Ireland in 2019. Dr Bacon's interests span palaeobotany to modern plant ecology and incorporates elements of plant biology, geology and chemistry. She is particularly interested in understanding plant extinction and how plants respond to environmental change both in a modern context and in relation to environmental upheavals, such as mass extinctions, in the geological record. She is also interested in taphonomy, the science of fossil preservation, and understanding what quality of information can be determined from the fossil record. Her modern ecological research focuses on invasive species, plant chemistry, ecosystem services, and plant awareness (plant blindness). Some links:Dr Karen Bacon NUI Galway page: https://www.nuigalway.ie/our-research/people/natural-sciences/kbacon/ Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew 2020 State of the World's Plants and Fungi: https://www.kew.org/science/state-of-the-worlds-plants-and-fungi BBC article on plant blindness: https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20190425-plant-blindness-what-we-lose-with-nature-deficit-disorder Biodiversity:National Biodiversity Data Centre (great resource): https://www.biodiversityireland.ie/ Link to the government page asking the public what research they would like funded. https://creatingourfuture.iePlease go to this page and highlight what you would like funded- (plant biodiversity etc)Some questions for people seeking election:-Do you consider biodiversity and the biodiversity crisis a priority? The cover for issue 28 of Oncotarget features Figure 5, "TMEM165 expression levels alters N-linked glycosylation," by Murali, et al., and reported that the TMEM165 protein was not detected in non-malignant matched breast tissues and was detected in invasive ductal breast carcinoma tissues by mass spectrometry. The hypothesis is that the TMEM165 protein confers a growth advantage to breast cancer. The authors created a CRISPR/Cas9 knockout of TMEM165 in the human invasive breast cancer cell line MDAMB231. Furthermore, they find that TMEM165 expression alters the glycosylation of breast cancer cells and these changes promote the invasion and growth of breast cancer by altering the expression levels of key glycoproteins involved in the regulation of the epithelial to mesenchymal transition such as E-cadherin. These studies illustrate new potential functions for this Golgi membrane protein in the control of breast cancer growth and invasion. Dr. Karen L. Abbott from The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology said "Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women." The TMEM165 protein was identified by mass spectrometry in invasive breast carcinoma tissue with no detection in patient-matched adjacent normal breast tissues. The authors analyzed TCGA breast cancer cases to examine TMEM165 expression levels in all molecular types of human breast cancer using UALCAN. They found that TMEM165 is amplified across all types of breast cancer compared to normal breast tissue with IDC cases having the highest levels of TMEM165 expression. In the present study, the authors report that TMEM165 is upregulated in human breast cancer cell lines and patient tumor tissues and increased expression of TMEM165 correlates with poor prognosis in breast cancer patients. Collectively, the data demonstrate that overexpression of TMEM165 promotes EMT in breast cancer suggesting a novel role for TMEM165 as a driver of tumor invasion making it a prognostic marker and potential therapeutic target for breast cancer. The Abbott Research Team concluded in their Oncotarget Research Paper, "we have expanded on our initial 2012 glycoproteomic study that was the first to identify TMEM165 protein as a potential biomarker for breast carcinoma. In this study, we have provided initial mechanistic studies that indicate that TMEM165 expression drives the growth and invasion of breast cancer. TMEM165 expression levels could be a potential prognostic marker for predicting DCIS cases that may progress to invasive disease. Larger prospective cohorts will need to be analyzed to determine the link between TMEM165 levels and the progression to IDC. We find that IDC patients with higher TMEM165 expression levels have reduced overall survival making this protein a target for the development of new therapeutic strategies to limit the progression of breast cancer." sleeperoo: Nachhaltige Pop-Up Erlebnisnächte Bevor Karen Löhnert sich 2017 mit ihrer eigenen Idee selbständig gemacht hat, war sie über 30 Jahre in verschiedenen Positionen in der Tourismusbranche tätig.

What is the impact of sensory and behavior on early survival skills? Mandy and Aditi begin with a case study on Aditi's son Tristan who was diagnosed with failure to thrive. Mandy and Aditi also refer to a behavioral feeding program where differential reinforcement was used alongside other interventions to build adaptive eating repertoires. They also talk how a collaborative sensory and behavior approach can develop a hypothesis and the need to exercise caution when using profession-specific terms to avoid miscommunication. HIGHLIGHTS 04:36 Shoutout to Margo B. Holm 05:45 Case study: Tristan's early feeding problems 12:57 Differentiating sensory and behavior: Interoception and Dead Man’s Test 22:49 Early feeding behaviors and the sensory hypothesis behind it 30:14 A behavioral feeding program for failure-to-thrive infants by Larson, Ayllon, and Barrett 42:12 Key takeaways GLOSSARY Interoception - The perception of sensations from inside the body and includes the perception of physical sensations related to internal organs like the heartbeat, respiration, and satiety. Dead man test - If a dead person can do it, it's not behavior. If a dead person can't do it, it is behavior. Examples: laying still, falling down stairs, being noncompliant, sitting in a chair. Unlearned (respondent) behavior - Behavior that a baby does not need prior learning to engage like survival mechanisms (feeding, suckling). Differential reinforcement - Promotion and strengthening of behavior we want to see again and weakening what is reinforcing behavior that we want to reduce. Punishment - Something that reduces a behavior. Larson, Teodoro Ayllon, Drue H. Barrett QUOTES 08:38 "My OT brain started going okay, I have ruled out all medical issues, so what's next? Then I was like there's got to be a sensory facet to this. This is when I started thinking about interoception." 21:44 "Since receiving and reacting to sensory responses, whether it's intrinsic or extrinsic, a dead man cannot do, therefore all sensory responses would actually be considered a behavior." 34:41 "They cautioned that the use of music alone was not recommended and that the adaptive eating was consequated by food and social attention primarily and while music was to mask the beginning of the feeding cycle, that it wasn't the primary reinforcer." 41:04 "We use terms that are very specific and defined but they also often have a common meaning as well such as another term that behavioral analysts use is punishment which often has a really negative connotation." 42:14 "The key takeaway, it's really about coming up with a sensory behavioral approach to develop a hypothesis. In this case with the baby, an infant who is in failure to thrive."

This podcast is provided by Ben Glass and Steve Emmert www.BenGlassReferrals.com - www.Virginia-Appeals.com Granted Appeal Summary Case FAIRFAX COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT, ET AL. v. HARRISON NEAL (Record Number 191129) From The Circuit Court of Fairfax County; R. Smith, Judge. Counsel Elizabeth D. Teare, Karen L. Gibbons, and Kimberly P. Baucom (Fairfax County Attorney’s Office); Stuart A. Raphael, Trevor S. Cox, and Matthew R. McGuire (Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP) for appellant. Edward S. Rosenthal, Lana M. Manitta, and David C. Rohrbach (Rich Rosenthal Brincefield Manitta Dzubin & Kroeger, PLLC); Eden Heilman and Jennifer Safstrom (American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Virginia, Inc.) for appellee. Assignments of Error The circuit court erred in concluding that the Department’s ALPR system is an “information system” under the Data Act because the ALPR system does not itself contain “the name, personal number, or other identifying particulars of a data subject.” Va. Code Ann. § 2.2-3801. The ALPR system does not become “a record-keeping process” under the Data Act simply because police officers have the ability [to] take a license plate number stored in the ALPR system and manually enter it into other databases, not maintained by the Department, to discover the identity of the vehicle owner. If the ALPR system is construed to include information that the Department could potentially access through the NCIC, VCIN, and the DMV databases, which can only be accessed with a valid criminal justice purpose, then the Court should decide anew, based on the changed factual predicate, whether the ALPR system is exempt under Code § 2.2-3802(7) notwithstanding Neal I’s contrary conclusion. The circuit court erred in ruling that the Department’s creation of an “information system” consisting of passively acquired ALPR data violates the Data Act. The circuit court erred in enjoining the Department from creating and maintaining an information system that consists of information captured by ALPR cameras. http://www.courts.state.va.us/courts/scv/appeals/191129.pdf Granted Appeal Summary Case HARRISON NEAL v. FAIRFAX COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT, ET AL. (Record Number 191127) From The Circuit Court of Fairfax County; R. Smith, Judge. Counsel Edward S. Rosenthal, Lana M. Manitta, and David C. Teare, Karen L. Gibbons, and Kimberly P. Baucom (Fairfax County Attorney’s Office) for appellee. Assignments of Error The trial court abused its discretion under Code Section 2.2-3809 in awarding less than 11% of the reasonable and necessary attorneys’ fees and costs proven by detailed billing records and affidavits. The trial court erred by excluding the affidavit of Bernard J. DiMuro, Neal’s attorneys’ fees expert. Assignment of Cross-Error The trial court’s award of attorneys’ fees and costs was error because the circuit court erred in concluding that the Department violated the Data Act, and in issuing an injunction. http://www.courts.state.va.us/courts/scv/appeals/191127.pdf
Back to Judge Sullivan. Persecution of Flynn a sign of things to come under Biden regime. The Duran: Episode 660. Via National Review (https://www.nationalreview.com/2020/09/michael-flynn-case-dc-circuit-rules-against-mandamus-case/)... It will come as no surprise to anyone who listened to the oral argument (or, ahem, read the coverage of it here at National Review) that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit has denied Michael Flynn's petition for a writ of mandamus against District Court Judge Emmet Sullivan. General Flynn, President Trump's original national-security adviser, was seeking to persuade the appellate court to order Judge Sullivan to dismiss the case against him on the Justice Department's motion. The ruling by the en banc court (i.e., consideration by all ten active Circuit judges who were not recused from the case) was 8–2. As predicted here, a strong majority of the court — whose Democratic appointees easily outnumber their Republican counterparts — lined up against two dissenting Republican appointees. In May, those dissenters, Judges Neomi Rao and Karen L. Henderson, had formed the majority of a three-judge Circuit panel that initially ruled in Flynn's favor. The panel ruling was vacated when the full Circuit decided to hear the case. *** The Patriot Beacon #1 Tactical Flashlight on the Market Link: https://www.patrioticlegacy.com/product/patriot-flashlight/ Coupon code: Duran20

Dr. Lee holds board certifications from the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology (Sleep Medicine), 2013, and the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology (Neurology), 2012. At NYU Langone, she specializes in treating patients who suffer from sleep disorders. Dr. Lee discusses her background in neurology and her personal story. During her extensive medical studies, she found the study of sleep to be particularly fascinating from a neurological perspective. As she explains, while you might think of sleep as a shutting down period, there are actually many important processes taking place during our sleep. Dr. Lee talks about sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome. As she explains, restless leg syndrome is sometimes hard to diagnose because many people who suffer from it have difficulty truly describing exactly how it affects them, but it typically manifests in discomfort, either in the legs, possibly arms as well, or other parts of the body. She discusses the many ways that sufferers describe it, like discomfort or a tingling sensation, a prickly feeling, or soreness. She explains when it often occurs and talks about treatment options, and how many people experience relief by moving their legs, though relief may be only temporary. Dr. Lee details sleep apnea and explain how it affects the upper airways. She elaborates on the symptoms and treatments, and the many options for apnea sufferers. Poor quality sleep is related to multiple conditions and various diseases, such as stroke, anxiety and depression, headaches, poor concentration, chronic pain, heart disease, dementia, obesity, hypertension, and more. Dr. Lee has a keen interest in treating patients who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, narcolepsy, and other disorders related to sleep.

In this episode of Ergasia, we conclude our exploration of the book The Dream Betrayed: Religious Challenge of the Working Class by Lutheran scholar Karen L Bloomquist. Having taken us through the dilemma faced by the working class under the oppressive reign of neoliberalism, and having likewise identified both the sin lying at the heart of that oppression as well as the Church's contribution to the betrayal of working class hopes, Bloomquist issues a call to the Church to become a community of resistance that enables the structural injustices of corporatist capitalism to be identified, challenged, and transformed. Hi Runners, I hope you enjoyed Episode #1 and now know a little more about me. Lindsey Hein is a great interviewer and was wonderful to speak to. Please give a listen to her podcast, I'll Have Another with Lindsey Hein. (https://lindseyhein.com) In Episode #2, we get to the format of Feel Good Running starting with a little blabbing by me with my thoughts. My friend recently sent me a Email that he went into Atrial Fibrillation the day after a triathlon and mentions his GPS & Apple Watch saved his life. He said this is common for older athletes. I'm not sure the age range that my audience will be when the podcast grows but this is good discussion for any age. I talk a little about that. The treat of this episode is my interview with Dr. Karen L. Ostlund. I've been friends with Karen and her husband Fred for a few years now. They come out to Maui from Austin, Texas at least twice a year and join our Wednesday Night Run and we do things outside of running. Karen is a true Feel Good Runner! Besides her passion as a Professor, teaching science at the University of Texas - Austin, her passion is running. Karen has done over 100 marathons, numerous half-marathons, 10 & 5k races and travels extensively to run them--many with friends. It seems every time I see her Facebook Post, she is running a race somewhere. She is also a running coach for Austin Fit. In this episode of Ergasia, we begin an examination of the relationship between the Church and the working class through the book The Dream Betrayed: Religious Challenge of the Working Class by the Lutheran pastor and theologian, Karen L Bloomquist. Bloomquist begins by identifying the central dilemma of the working class in modernity: their betrayal by the neoliberal dream of upward social and economic mobility in return for a lifetime of hard work. But she also begins setting the scene for how the Church often fails to respond to the reality of that dilemma; and how it can develop a theology of incarnational ministry that propetically challenges the prevailing order, instead of merely helping individuals in distress. Sarah interviews author and life coach Karen L. Kristjanson about her book Co-Parenting form the Inside Out: Voices of Moms and Dads. Karen and her ex-husband made the decision 25 years ago to co-parent their 2 young sons after their divorce. At that time there wasn't much information on the process, how to go about it, what to avoid, etc. Karen eventually realized that the book she wanted to read wasn't out there and decided to write it herself. She interviewed 14 dads and 38 moms about their processes of co-parenting. The parents talk about what they learned, what they wish they had known going into the process, what worked, and what didn't. This book is an excellent guide to an important topic that can affect numerous lives during a difficult time.Follow the GSMC Book Review Podcast at: http://www.gsmcpodcast.com/book-review-podcast.htmlLearn more by following the GSMC Book Review Blog at http://gsmcbookreview.blogspot.com/

North American culture is in transition in many ways, and religion is one of those areas that is in transition, especially away from organized religion to other avenues. As such these various avenues are resources for resistance to oppression and for positive activism in our world. Both of today's guests live in the Portland Metro and represent the transition that is taking place. Karen Garst says that "Organized religion is a cultural barrier to full equality for men and women." She is the author of Women Beyond Belief: Discovering Life Without Religion. Her website is The Faithless Feminist. Rabbi Brian calls himself "a modern-day rabbi with John Lennon’s inclusivity and a Blues Brothers mission." He lives in Portland and does most of his work on-line at Religion Outside the Box. --- Karen L. Garst has a Bachelors degree and a Masters degree in French. She obtained her PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She moved to Oregon in 1980 to serve as field representative of the Oregon Federation of Teachers. In 1988 she was selected to serve as the executive director of the Oregon Community College Association and in 1996 as the executive director of the Oregon State Bar. She retired from that position in 2008. She is married and lives in Oregon. -- Born and raised on the small island of Manhattan, Rabbi Brian grew up exceedingly rational. He thought he was going to be a math major and then an architect. Asking many ‘why’s led him to rabbinical school where he continued to struggle with the answers he received. In 2000, he left mainstream, organized, denominational religion to pursue religion-outside-the-box ( ROTB.org). In 2007 he took up working full-time as a mathematics (and life lesson) instructor where he recovered his minister’s heart. In 2015 Rabbi Brian followed his calling to nourish spiritual-religious hunger full time – no matter people’s theology, religious background, or lack of either. He lives in Portand, Oregon with his family. Karen Garst: 1:44 Rabbi Brian: 29:30
