Intimacy coordinators are an essential part of creating safe and professional working environments on set, acting as advocates and liaisons between actors and production for scenes involving nudity, simulated sex and other intimate acts. Last month, intimacy coordinators unanimously agreed to join SAG-AFTRA in a National Labor Relations Board vote. To discuss why this matters and what it means for the future of the profession and the entertainment industry at large, we're joined by intimacy coordinators Claire Warden and Erin Tillman, who were instrumental in the recent vote to unionize. **The views expressed by the guests are their own and not that of SAG-AFTRA. Should you hire an intimacy coordinator for your next project? What exactly does an intimacy coordinator do? Does having this person on set ruin spontaneity? How can having more structure around intimate scenes, actually encourage freedom and creativity during the storytelling process? In today's episode, No Film School's GG Hawkins speaks with Lisa Jacqueline Starrett, Jamie Monahan, and Renata Soares to discuss: The role of an intimacy coordinator What led Lisa, Jamie, and Renata to become intimacy coordinators Wanting to advocate for actors and their boundaries How detailed screenwriters should be when writing intimate scenes Knowing the intention behind sex scenes How to choreograph and rehearse intimate scenes Being hired as an “insurance policy” to protect production What it looks like to be actively pursuing a safe space Having a consent - forward mentality on set The types of conversations an intimacy coordinator should have with cast and crew How to redirect a situation that is not working Why art doesn't require graphic nudity to be amazing How to become an intimacy coordinator Memorable Quotes “If you're thinking of safety protocols for staged violence, why are we not doing the same for intimacy scenes?” [13:21] “I love thinking about art and intimacy in a way that can move storytelling forward.” [19:10] “The creative vision of the scene doesn't come from the intimacy coordinator…we are there to facilitate the vision to become reality.” [30:04] “We are there to make everyone more comfortable in telling that story.” [56:26] Find No Film School everywhere: On the Web https://nofilmschool.com/ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/nofilmschool Twitter https://twitter.com/nofilmschool YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/nofilmschool Instagram https://www.instagram.com/nofilmschool Send us an email with questions or feedback: podcast@nofilmschool.com! Sarah Ann Masse dropped by the pod this week to talk about the world behind the camera in Hollywood. We discussed the importance of having Intimacy Coordinators on set, diversity in Hollywood, social justice, and so much more!
Yes! You are in! This play of the day is unique. We don't always go to the preachers. Here is an intriguing conversation between an atheist and a believer, here you go...Very intriguing! Thank you Adam Carolla, the controversial atheist...well perhaps agnostic that isn't afraid to have Christians, Jews, Muslims, others on his program. You may not agree with him. Yet you can't accuse him of censoring. In fact, ironically, it has been the censoring and control of the left that has pushed him toward believing or at least envying believers and faith in a God.Next, kudos to Neil McDonough. You may need to web search to recognize him. When you see him, you'll probably say, oh yeah, that guy. Now, I definitely want to check out this movie called The Shift...and I will. Props to you Neil for speaking up. Most of Hollywood wants to cancel you...yet that has Rom 8:28, created a new opportunity. Studios like Angel and the Robertsons are pumping out great movies and content. This year alone I saw Jesus Revolution and The Stand...amazingly well done and brought tears to my eyes. If you would like to hear more of that Neil McDonough interview, check out the Adam Carolla podcast, "Rob Schneider, Intimacy Coordinators and Movie Accents" published on the 13 of December 2023. And yes, Neil is on that one, roughly about the last hour of that podcast. So some of you are asking, why do you listen to an atheist/agnostic? Let alone promoting? Call me a hopeless romantic, I believe in people. Yes, they are flawed. Adam is flawed just like Pastor Rick Warren or the Pope or ____________. We are all flawed Rom 3:23. We all need Jesus, Rom 8:1. Rom 10: 9-10. That's a fact Jack!Okay versed ones, when you read the Bible. Who is out of line? Who rises up? I tell you all the time. Think of the least likely in your group. That could be your Paul or Mary Magdalene. I truly believe Adam could be a Paul (Saul to Paul). It's interesting to see him shift to Agnostic. What does Jesus say about a mustard seed fo faith? Check Matt 17: 20-21As for that clip, that is Matt 5:16. Neil is shining Light big time and Adam is letting him. As for the environment, avid listener knows my comments. God created this earth. If you believe in God, we best take care of this earth. No debate. Yet keep God our God. Jesus Christ as our saviour. The Holy Spirit as our guide. I hear and see what Adam is saying. Many make movements their religion. Ending on a prayer note...
Rob Schneider and Adam take a dive into Rob's family history and discuss its influence on his comedy. The guys then chat about inconsistencies in movie accents, most notably in Napoleon. This leads the guys to question the origins of Pepe Le Pew and other cartoon characters. Next, Adam and Rob chat about Adam Sandler and Rob previews Sandler's upcoming Netflix movie. Chris reports the news on Jennifer Aniston declining an intimacy coordinator on set, Aaron Rodgers expected to return to the field on Christmas Eve, and Danny Bonaduce retiring from radio. Rob also talks about chatting with Tony Orlando on a plane. Neal McDonough joins Adam and talks about his new movie, The Shift, where he plays the devil. The guys talk about how Neal's faith has influenced his career and why Yellowstone was snubbed by The Emmys, despite its popularity. Lastly, the guys talk about Neal's family and music. Join me in this extended conversation and learn about Rachel's detour from a start wanting to be a director, to being an actor, to encountering Fitzmaurice Voicework and Knight Thompson Speech work in grad school, and the freedom that gave her physically, but also emotionally the lack of diversity and representation through her education which led her to co-found The BluePrint, which is a non-profit for advancing the training and careers of actors of color, taught by actors of color. Her incredible insights into dialect work and what's actually useful for the actor and how she found herself becoming an Intimacy Director. She is a sought after conference presenter and having been to one of her workshops I can't recommend her work highly enough. The role of intimacy coordinator is a relatively new one in the entertainment industry; at its core, it's designed to make sex scenes on set and stage safer and more comfortable for the actors involved. While the professionals shaping this position come from different backgrounds and have adopted their own unique approaches, the origins of intimacy coordination lie in a desperate need that went unfulfilled for far too long. “I did a call out, I think it was on Facebook, and I just said, ‘please send me your experience with intimate scenes. I want the good, the bad, the ugly,'” says intimacy coordinator Lizzy Talbot (“Bridgerton”). “My inbox was just flooded, absolutely flooded. And I think all of them were negative. Every single person who had written in had a negative experience.” In this episode of In the Envelope: The Actor's Podcast, we sat down with Talbot and fellow intimacy coordinators Alicia Rodis (“And Just Like That…”), Mia Schachter (“Blindspotting”), and Nisha Ahuja (“Never Have I Ever”) to discuss how this up-and-coming role is changing sex scenes for the better. --- Backstage has been the #1 resource for actors and talent-seekers for 60 years. Intimacy Coordinators Face New Challenges on Set by Uptown Radio
Intimacy Coordinators Face New Challenges On Set by Uptown Radio
Sex scenes are common in movies and on TV, but have you ever stopped to think about everything that goes into bringing one of those scenes to life? It's a unique situation, and it puts the actors and in highly vulnerable position. For example, what if your scene partner goes off script and does something that you did not previously consent to? Or what if the director asks you to do something you aren't comfortable with? In the past, issues like these weren't given a lot of consideration, but that has all changed with the rise of intimacy coordinators. These are the folks who work to carefully choreograph sexual and intimate scenes to ensure respect and safety for the performers. This is the first episode in a two-part series all about what it takes to coordinate sex on screen. I am joined by Marci Liroff, who has worked as a casting director, producer, and acting coach for more than 40 years. Her extensive credits span more than 60 films and television series. In 2019, she completed an extensive training course and is now a Certified Intimacy Coordinator. Today, our conversation focuses on the evolution of on-screen sex scenes and the rise of intimacy coordinators. Some of the topics we discuss are: What are the power dynamics like on set, and how does this influence actors' ability to advocate for themselves? How were sex scenes typically navigated before intimacy coordinators? When did intimacy coordinators first come onto the scene and what prompted studios to start hiring them? What are some of the things that people get wrong about intimacy coordinators, and how do we make production teams more receptive to the idea of bringing them on board? What is the certification process like to become an intimacy coordinator? Do intimacy coordinators have specializations? Or, do they need to be prepared for virtually any intimate scenario? Be sure to check out Marci's website at marciliroffic.com to learn more about her work, and follow her on Twitter @marciliroff. Thank you to our sponsors! Have you ever been so drawn into a powerful, physical scene in a movie or on the stage and wondered “how did they DO that?” We are not just talking about the sex scenes, although they can be provocative for sure but poignant domestic disputes, racially charged interactions and more. All of these types of depictions of real life actions require respect, patience, understanding and compassion. And for the women participating in these roles, it has long been an expectation that they would simply perform as they are directed, without question. The #metoo movement reminded women that they are entitled to have a voice and to feel safe everywhere and in every work environment. While Intimacy Directors and Intimacy Coordinators have been in existence in some form, for some time, their roles have grown and evolved dramatically since 2018. Today we are excited to introduce you to one of Canada's 5 existing Intimacy Coordinators (the only one in Winnipeg) and Canada's very own, Sharon Bajer. While many cases have come to light amid the #MeToo movement, Cuomo's case has some unique wrinkles that are worth discussing. Speaking of #MeToo, the movement has sparked an entirely new profession in the film industry.
