Jörg Reckhenrich - Art Thinking for Coaching

Artists not only create works of art. History has shown the important role they played in shaping our consciousness and environment. Every piece of art will resonate with someone, somewhere. It initiates dialogue and conversations; it stimulates action; it inspires change and growth. To this episode’s guest, Jörg Reckhenrich, therapy, coaching, and deep self-inquiry can come through art. You can apply and implement art thinking for business, entrepreneurship, everyday problem-solving...to practically everything! While Jörg is an artist himself and became a gallery owner, he didn’t like art books or theories in his younger days. Observing artworks and going deep into conversations about perceptions was what drew him into this lane. To him, it's not about the artwork itself, it's about the resonance of the person who's looking at that piece of art. Experiencing the power of art, it became important for Jörg to share it with people and spread positivity. Combining art coaching, positive psychology, and systemic attitude has become his wonderfully pieced together work-of-art to scale learning, education, and leadership. Coaching through art starts with a free conversation about a general topic before questions are posed. But it’s not like the conventional coaching process—the coach doesn’t always have to be the one who asks and the coachee answers. It’s a multidirectional learning process; from observation to context and real-life questions and problems. And as the landscape for learning is changing, especially these days, coaching through art has become even more relevant and effective. Especially because in art, it's not about knowing better, but daring to be out there and just doing it; trying to shift the world with the simplest notion. Always start with pure perception and the dialogue will emerge. - Jörg Reckhenrich  Let go of the things why you observe an art piece. The choice you do has so much to do with your own ideas, questions, your involvement. - Jörg Reckhenrich  It's not about knowing better, but daring to be out there and just doing it. Trying to shift the world with the simplest notion. - Alexandra Kreis Have the courage to try out before you think too much. If you see and sense something that interests or stimulates you, go for it. Do and make a new experience, and then learn from it. That's the artist's way. - Jörg Reckhenrich Guest Bio Jörg Reckhenrich is an artist, systemic consultant, and business coach. He is the founder of PParts, a consultant company that combines positive psychology with Art Thinking. Jörg is a member of the faculty at CEIBS (Zürich Institute of Business Education) and visiting lecturer at IMD Lausanne, London Business School, ESMT, and ESCP Berlin. In this episode of Art Grind, hosts Dina Brodsky, Marshall Jones, and producer Tun Myaing interview writer and entrepreneur Patrick McGinnis in New York City. Best known for coining the term “FOMO” (Fear Of Missing Out), McGinnis seems like an unusual guest: what could someone from the world of finance speak about on an art podcast? As an art collector, writer, and brother of a musician, it turns out that McGinnis has a lot to talk about. McGinnis not only shares pragmatic advice useful for any creative, but is a bold storyteller who respects art and culture. From travelling in South America to renegade drawing exhibitions to Harvard Business School, this episode proves, and McGinnis would insist, that there’s no room for FOMO in a creative life. Invest Alongside Boston's Top Angels: Check Out Our Syndicates A professor of entrepreneurship in Paris who discovered a way to use art to help business people think more creatively, Sylvain Bureau met his unlikely collaborator at a wedding. The product of this chance encounter, Art Thinking, has gained acceptance in boardrooms around the world. My sound engineer Raul Rosa really liked this episode. I did too. ESCP Europe, where Sylvain Bureau teaches, is the first business school. It was founded two centuries ago. The founder was Jean Baptiste Say of the eponymous economic law. B. Say really believed in entrepreneurship. The foundation named after him now employs twenty academics in the field of entrepreneurship in several European cities. Sylvain Burau was trying to get out of the “Velvet-Lined Rut” of tenured academia in much the same way that Howard Stevenson was when he left a tenured position at Harvard Business School to go into business. At a wedding celebration Sylvain Bureau met an artist named Pierre Tectin. Since French wedding festivities are famously long, Pierre and Sylvain had a long conversation from which ensued the idea of Art Thinking. They apply a technique created by Guy Debord whereby small groups of people wander or drift, (the method is actually called “drift”) through an unfamiliar landscape, usually urban, allowing themselves to be drawn by the terrain and the chance encounters they make there. Art Thinking is a method to create the improbable with certainty. The goal is not to find a solution, the goal is to question our questions. Sylvain see the need for this approach arising from the need to find new solutions to the constraints we face both in terms of the environment and in terms of the encroachment into human work by machines. Creating the improbable allows humans to enhance the value of what machines can do. Sal speculates about the connections between drift and the neuroscience of human vision, whereby low-resolution images of the world around us are created and stored in our brains. Art Thinking is more about unlearning certain patterns of thought that locks the business person in certain unproductive modes. The Art Thinking workshops are very demanding and challenging but invariably result in the creation of something valuable. This strong experience that produces an unexpected object opens participants up to possibilities they had not previously considered. The e-commerce site LaRedoute.com implemented Art Thinking in its personnel department and found that their new practices had resulted in more openness to new providers. Another instance is the creation of an event that highlighted the work of street food vendors and led to the creation of a new catering company called Mamie Foodie. Sylvain wrote a book called “Free Your Pitch” to help people improve their pitch decks. The aim is to free you from the habits that lead to boring pitch decks. It won’t make you into Steve Jobs but it will make your deck at least good. The methods in the book have been used by EY and Canon for internal presentations. Sylvain compares the entrepreneurial environment in Europe and the US. He sees huge shifts. Japan is using France as an example to follow in boosting entrepreneurship quickly. Sylvain emphasizes the need for increasing people’s ability to be creative so that they may contribute more productively in a work environment being increasingly automated. Startup Parade Glowee is a startup that grew out of Sylvain’s work. It makes lighting based on biological lighting sources. Dashlane Password Manager is another company founded by a former student. It has been well received in America. They made a successful jump from Europe to the US. Stonly is a tool for creating highly effective user guides. Anti-Café is co-working space where you pay by the hour. “Where Everything Is Free Except Time”. In conclusion Sylvain advises founders to take into account the human element in their work. “The Fuzzy and The Techie”.

Welcome to a very special episode of Surviving Art (done for the 33rd Biennial of Graphic Arts in Ljubljana! What makes this one so special are the interests of my guest: Amy Whitaker. She is an assistant professor at NYU with a Masters degree in business as well as a masters in Fine Art. An incredible mix of interests and one of the reasons why I’m so excited for this interview. She’s also the author of two incredibly interesting books. Museum Legs, which is a wonderful collection of thoughts on the operation of museums, asking questions like: What's the purpose of an art museum? Should they educate us or entertain us, or merely act as a public display for works of art? And regardless of what purpose they have, should all art museums try to serve the same one or niche down and specialise in following one particular mission? Her second book Art Thinking explores the act of being creative in today’s world of schedules, budgets and bosses. It combines the mind-sets of art and creative thinking and the tools of business, offering practical advice, inspiration, and a healthy dose of pragmatism for anyone that wishes to navigate the difficulties of balancing creative thinking in a business environment. Our conversations and her writing got me thinking about my own exploration of both worlds and the ever-present question of economics in art. Amy speaks of two inherently different but incredibly interconnected ways of thinking and experiencing the world. The first kind she calls Art Thinking; this is the process of letting go, of giving ones mind the time and space to wander, explore, and get excited about the world and the question I want to ask today is: How can one create their own system that incorporates both? Or better yet: How can we find already created ones, that we can reappropriate and reuse to fit our own needs?
