We all know about FOMO, or the Fear Of Missing Out. We're scrolling through our social media feeds, and there it is: post after post of a friend who's somewhere exotic, having a great time, or at an exciting new job… and we're not. We can't help but compare our lives with people who seem to be doing so much more. The result can be an uptick in anxiousness, distress, grinding to “keep up” and sometimes FOMO can even stop us from taking action…that feeling of being overwhelmed. FOMO – the acronym and the idea – really struck a nerve in the social media age. Not only is it now in the Merriam Webster dictionary, but it's spawned a whole slew of related acronyms: FOBO (Fear of Better Options), JOMO (Joy of Missing Out) and even inspired me to coin the term FOPO, the Fear Of People's Opinions.Today on the podcast is writer and entrepreneur Patrick McGinnis, who invented the term FOMO back in the early 2000s. He did it flippantly, but then the idea took off, and he's been owning it and studying it ever since.Patrick has come up with a way of looking at our fear of missing out, how to train ourselves to work with it, and even use it – in positive ways – to really go after the things we want and elevate our lives. It's a fascinating story, a unique perspective on modern culture, and a great way of using this “negative” idea and turning it into a tool for better living. In the spirit of FOMO... you DO NOT want to miss this one :)With Fire,MG-----WATCH this episode on our YouTube channel.Connect with us on our Instagram.Order my book, "The First Rule of Mastery" HERE!For more information and shownotes from every episode, head to findingmastery.com.To check out our exclusive sponsor deals and discounts CLICK HERESee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

BRAVE Southeast Asia Tech Podcast: Patrick McGinnis, VC & Creator of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) Sapiens, and Jeremy Au talked about three main themes: 1. FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) vs. FOBO (Fear of Better Option): Patrick shared how he had created the terms FOMO and FOBO during his MBA student days at Harvard. He shared how he was surprised 10 years later that his lingo with friends had grown into globally recognized phenomena. These behavior patterns of overcommitment, indecisiveness and optionality maximization have been exacerbated by the endless choices and information overload facilitated by digital platforms, leading to widespread analysis paralysis and stress. He discusses why he thinks FOBO is less popular than FOMO due to its darker nature and more insightful lens into human decision-making. 2. Overcoming Career Paralysis: Patrick shared his personal journey from a career in venture capital to becoming an author, speaker, and entrepreneur. He shared how he had to have a heart rate monitor installed due to the high stress of his job that he fundamentally disliked, and the eventually lonely, painful and scary decision to take a career sabbatical and step outside the conventional path that would have been expected from a Harvard MBA graduate. 3. VC & Life Decision Frameworks: Patrick detailed his conscious effort to integrate strategies to combat FOMO and FOBO, sharing a framework for categorizing decisions (high stakes, low stakes, and no stakes) to streamline decision-making processes. Patrick shared his frustrations with the VC industry's incentive structures, including the challenges of decision-making in an environment rife with FOMO and FOBO. He emphasized the importance of discipline, due diligence, and being mindful of underlying motivations when making investment decisions. He also shared examples from his "FOMO folio" strategy to manage investment temptation. He also discussed the societal shift towards constant comparison and indecision, strategies for combating decision fatigue, and why he's exploring coaching and building for the next stage of his career. In this episode of FOMO Sapiens, host Patrick McGinnis welcomes special guest Suneel Gupta, author of the book "Everyday Dharma", who shares his experience of writing his first book while working in private equity, dedicating just 30 minutes a day to writing. Suneel's new book, "Everyday Dharma," is a guide to making ancient wisdom relevant to the modern world, and applicable to our daily lives. Gupta discusses the concept of wisdom being sought after throughout history, emphasizing the importance of finding equanimity, or space, between being triggered and responding. Throughout the conversation, we highlight "Opeka," which focuses on finding comfort in discomfort. He shares an analogy of a prickly porcupine to illustrate how we can navigate challenging situations in life, and stresses the importance of taking a moment of reflection before reacting to difficult circumstances. The conversation delves into the works of Victor Frankl, particularly his book "Man's Search for Meaning." Gupta and Patrick discuss how previous generations viewed and pursued meaning in their lives through financial success, while younger generations are prioritizing meaning over money. They explore how integrating ancient wisdom into our lives doesn't mean giving up ambition or financial success, but rather examining whether material possessions truly bring fulfillment. Suneel encourages self-inquiry and avoiding reaching old age with regrets about not living life differently. He shares the story of Karen, a nurse who brought her passion for writing into her job without leaving it, demonstrating that approaching life differently can be achieved within existing circumstances. The discussion also touches on the concept of FOMO (fear of missing out) and how external desires and accumulation of wealth often fail to bring internal fulfillment. Suneel also introduces the "arrival fallacy," the belief that reaching a certain point of accumulation or success will bring complete fulfillment, which he argues is a flawed notion. The episode explores the importance of self-awareness and avoiding impulsive actions, as well as the societal pressure to respond quickly in every communication channel. Gupta questions the urgency of immediate responses and suggests that decision-making power should be placed at the beginning to determine if a situation truly requires an immediate response or if it can be addressed later. Ton's big idea from her first book "The Good Jobs Strategy" is that providing good jobs is a choice, even for low-cost retailers. It challenges the conventional wisdom that low wages and high turnover are necessary for profitability. Instead, Zeynep argues that these practices are more expensive than we may think. Her latest book delves deeper into the reasons why companies should make the choice to offer good jobs and provides practical insights on how to do so. Throughout the episode, Zeynep explores two key lessons that she has discovered through her research. Firstly, she reveals that paying employees low wages and operating with high turnover can actually cost companies more in the long run by generating hidden costs like lost sales and low productivity. Zeynep presents compelling evidence that changing to a good job system is not only less risky than commonly believed, but also yields positive financial returns. Zeynep also emphasizes that creating a good job system isn't just about human resources - it's about winning in business. She underscores the importance of investing in people, paying them enough, so they can focus on their jobs, and positioning your teams for success. Elements such as meaningful work, respect for employees' time, and trust in their decision-making abilities are key components of a good job. This approach not only benefits the workers but also increases productivity and contributes to overall company success. In the episode, Zeynep acknowledges the changing nature of the workforce due to advancements in AI and automation. She expresses concern about the prevailing belief that people can easily be retrained for different jobs, and highlights the pressure on employers and companies to respond to technological disruptions while still creating good jobs. She believes that technology doesn't happen to us; we have agency in how we respond to it. Drawing from real-world examples, Zeynep showcases how companies can adapt to a good job system and thrive in the face of change. One such example is Sam's Club, Walmart's wholesale club. Before 2017, Sam's Club was underperforming and falling behind Costco. However, a new CEO implemented key changes, including investing in employees by raising wages and implementing stable schedules. Reducing product variety also improved employee productivity and customer satisfaction. By leveraging technology to enhance and empower employees, companies can create better jobs and increase customer value. Zeynep reveals that even business school professors are at the forefront of exploring how capitalism can be improved. The rise of mission-driven companies allows customers to align their values with the businesses they support. Zeynep emphasizes that customers have a role to play in the conversation about what good jobs should look like. This engaging episode also explores the power of entrepreneurship and starting from scratch to create great companies. Zeynep shares the story of Jim Synagel, who started Costco in Seattle 40 years ago. By paying double the industry average for employees, Costco built a great team and achieved remarkable success. The key, Zeynep argues, is having conviction and creating a strong system from the beginning. Join us for this thought-provoking episode, that challenges the status quo and offers practical strategies for companies to embrace the good job model. Discover how companies can thrive in a changing world and create sustainable growth while prioritizing their most valuable asset - their employees. Don't miss out on this insightful conversation! "Fear of Missing Out" or "FOMO" is wired into our brains for a reason. When our ancestors flocked to greener pastures, it was advantageous to follow. FOMO can inform modern, strategic decisions as well, but Patrick McGinnis says we should be vigilant against its more dangerous sibling, FOBO: "Fear of Better Options." This is a kind of decision paralysis that's catastrophic for personal well-being and companies. Patrick has studied it closely. After all, he invented the term "FOMO" back in 2004, written multiple books on the topic, and hosts the podcast FOMO Sapiens. He and Whitney discuss how the breakneck speed of 21st century FOMO can trick us into "fear-based decision making," and why outsourcing low-stakes choices to Siri or a coin flip can be incredibly liberating.

We've had a busy month around here at Take Control ADHD. This week, we're introducing a new episode in to our podcast calendar. We don't have a great name for it yet, but rest assured a great name is inbound! For now, we're talking all about lessons we've learned in March. We started with a conversation on managing tasks against a visual representation of our time. It's not easy, but sometimes stepping back from all the things you think you have to do on a given day and starting instead with the time you have to do things is the best way to get started with smart prioritization. From there, we introduced PACT Goals (Purposeful, Actionable, Continuous, and Trackable). Patrick McGinnis, the originator of FOMO, introduced us to FOBO (Fear of Better Options) where we learned the value of asking the universe for help to get a true gut-check on our feelings. Unblocking and Tackling helped us split our attention between getting ourselves unstuck and doing hard work, and finally, Casey Dixon helped us face facts about burnout! We finished our March Madness Pledge Drive having met our goals with your help and we're off to April with a bunch of behind-the-scenes work and the launch of Placeholder — Pete's new tech and systems podcast starting this week! This week's episode is brought to you by TextExpander. Keep your message consistent, save time and be more productive, and be accurate — every time — with TextExpander. Patrick McGinnis, the person behind the term "FOMO", is back. This time, he introduces us to — as he calls it — the evil brother of FOMO that can ruin your life. That thing is FOBO. The Fear of Better Options. It's the fear that there is always something better for you out there that holds you back from making the most important decisions of today. It foils any effort you might make toward commitment. It keeps you looking inward, at yourself, behind a veil of selfishness disguised as investigation. It can make you a lousy friend or partner. And it can make you hate yourself. This week, Nikki and Pete dive into Analysis Paralysis. Here's your background reading from Patrick McGinnis himself. Here an entry on Michael Crichton's Wikipedia entry on Gell-Mann Amnesia, if you're interested in further reading on the subject.

From cryptocurrency to housing, the fear of missing out (FoMO) drives a great deal of our financial decisions. Guest Patrick McGinnis, the first to coin the term FoMO, shares the root causes of this fear, as well as the unfortunate costs of FoMO-led investing and spending. His book is called Fear of Missing Out: Practical Decision-Making in an Overwhelming World. More about Patrick: He is an international venture capitalist and host of the hit podcast FOMO Sapiens. Patrick coined the term FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), as well as the related term FOBO (Fear of a Better Option) in a 2004 article in the student newspaper of Harvard Business School. FOMO has since been added to the dictionary and FOBO has become an increasingly popular framework to describe choice paralysis. Patrick is also the author of international bestseller The 10% Entrepreneur: Live Your Startup Dream Without Quitting Your Day Job. Want more articles and videos by Farnoosh?
