Thank you to Austin Shifrin for spending some time with us to discuss his new book, Black Ink, Farther Stars. His book is available on Amazon around the world. https://www.amazon.com/Black-Farther-Stars-Austin-Shifrin/dp/B0DBCD7PBM “Black Ink, Farther Stars”: The title derives from a mixed metaphor, combining a theurgic practice used by the ancient Greeks to talk with their gods, and the modern use of parallax by astronomers to estimate the distance to celestial objects. The book is 164 pages, and consists of 5 chapters, each a topic that was originally custom-written for presentation to a Masonic audience:“Ritual Across Time and Space” – how theater and the performing arts have been used by different societies around the world and throughout history for cultural and moral instruction.“The Chamber of Reflection: Mortality, Morphology, and Meaning” – how contemplation of death can enrich and inspire our lives, drawing on sources from Paracelsus to podcasts.“The Tarot of Virtue” – how Tarot cards can be used as a visual aid to study the 18 progressive virtues in the system of modern French philosopher Andre Comte-Sponville.“How the Allied Masonic Degrees and Grand College of Rites Complement Each Other” – the history of two lesser-known Masonic institutions, and the unique and colorful rituals that they preserve.“The Stuff Freemasonry is Made Of: Physical Properties of the Old Testament” – How we can better understand the stories of Freemasonry and the Old Testament when we have a better grasp of the physical settings and artifacts being referenced; examining both the hard science, and the lore. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/sslodge357/support

The program on Sunday, August 16, 2020 features Sara Shifrin, Chair of the League Voter Service Committee. She’ll share the many ways the League is conducting outreach to increase voter registration and our collaborations with other organizations to do so. Sara will also discuss how to request an early voting ballot for those not on the Permanent Early Voting List (PEVL) but interested in that option for the November 3rd General Election. KXCI Community Radio is pleased to partner with The League of Women Voters of Greater Tucson to provide a series of shows called Your Arizona Voting Guide leading up to the general election on November 3rd. This weekly half-hour series will air at 3:30 p.m. on Sundays beginning August 16th. During any election season, we always can count on a bombardment of political ads that tell us all the wonderful things every candidate has done and everything that’s wrong with their opponent. In addition, all too often, political consultants advise their candidates not to accept invitations to participate in public forums with their opponents to lessen the chance they’ll say something off-script. That results in very limited opportunities to hear directly from candidates and limits voter access to information about candidates and their positions on issues to scripted ads and sound bites. During the lead up to the November 3rd General Election, the League of Women Voters of Greater Tucson is interviewing candidates for the Arizona Corporation Commission, which is a State of Arizona office. In addition, the League will interview candidates running for Pima County offices: Sheriff, Recorder, and Treasurer. League member, Vivian Harte, serves as host of the program. To aid voters in making informed decisions at the polls, candidates for each respective position are being asked the same questions. KXCI 91.3 FM Community Radio is partnering with the League to air these interviews with the community. In addition, members of the League will be interviewed about various topics, including what to know about registering to vote in Pima County, ballot propositions, getting out the vote during the COVID-19 pandemic, speeches offered by the League, and League activities promoting diversity, equity and inclusion. The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages the informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. Company Overview Lexi’s L.A.M.B. was formed in loving memory of Alexis Christine Sparks to help other special children. Many children face problems and difficulties and spend much of their life fighting sickness. After watching Alexis fight everyday, we knew we wanted to help other children and their families through their own trials and tribulations. Many people have no idea how hard it is to have a child who has to face such difficulties but at the same time they don’t realize how easy it is to love them just the way they are. Our mission is to provide support for sick children and children with special needs through a partnership with parents, family, and medical staff. We work with local hospitals to meet these needs by providing items that help bring a sense of comfort and normalcy to the children. Items range from craft supplies and toys for the kids to meals for the parents while they are at the hospital with their child. Bob Dylan Tribute Rock Opera Album, Dylan at the Opera Diva de Lai is coming on to the new music scene as an innovative band that is looking to mix two unique styles, Rock and Opera. Dylan at the Opera is a concept album composed of original Bob Dylan songs rearranged in different rock styles with operatic vocals and represents their latest release.Yuval Nachtom, drummer and founder of Diva de Lai, created the concept and vision for the unique sound. Together with guitarist Eyal Sucher, who arranged the album, worked as a team on the music production.A well-rounded band, Diva de Lai is comprised of Yuval Nachtom who also holds a PhD in economics, Grammy-nominated bassist and producer Yossi Fine, Eyal Sucher, who holds a Masters degree in music, specializing in orchestra conducting, plays guitar and keyboard with mezzo-soprano and leading classical singer, Karin Shifrin as their front-woman. Señor (Tales of Yankee Power), the first single, was written by Dylan in the 1970’s and is a dark and depressing song that at the time was not understood. Though the original is simple, the lyric-heavy folk song was perfectly translated into a dramatic rock, opera sound that Shifrin captures in the cover. With her powerful delivery throughout the song, Shifrin executes the song’s messages on point. “Señor is about lack of hope, the rule of a tyrant, cruelty, lost love and maybe looking for an answer in a heavenly entity,” Nachtom states. “If we imagine that Señor is the name or nick name of a woman, then one can see here a dirge for a lost love - for a woman who walked away. The color of the lyrics and the melody present a challenge and are a natural basis for hard-core opera.” Dylan at the Opera is set to be released on October 22nd with 12 tracks to look forward to. Diva de Lai kept the classic Bob Dylan while providing their own creative spin to an original concept album.
