A change by Gov. Hochul would take hundreds of millions of dollars away from city schools every year. Plus, a recent court ruling makes it harder for some sexual abuse victims to sue the state but some lawmakers are trying to change that. Also, next month the sanitation department will issue tickets to New York City building owners who don't separate their compost from the rest of their trash. And finally, an exhibit at the New York Hall of Science celebrates America's female astronauts.

"My practice delves into the complexities of human intimacy, both romantic and familial. After the death of my younger brother and many of my friends to the ongoing opioid epidemic of my Appalachian hometown and the country at large, my own mortality became embedded within my active mark-making. Driven by a need to understand the world around me, my work serves as a visual exploration of the emotional and psychological intricacies of relationships, personal loss, and our place in the natural world. Imbued with a deep sense of nostalgia, the work harkens back to the excitement and vulnerability of new human connections and experiencing nature in a new light. For me, painting is as necessary as digging in the dirt - dragging your hand through a body of water - across a freshly buzzed head."   LINKS:  www.johnpaulkesling.com   www.instagram.com/johnpaulkesling         Artist Shout Out:    Brett Douglas Hunter @brettdouglashunter Marlos E'van @marlosevan Lindsy Davis @lindsydavis_     I Like Your Work Links: Check out our sponsor for this episode: The Sunlight Podcast: Hannah Cole, the artist/tax pro who sponsors I Like Your Work, has launched Business Deduction Deep Dive:  For artists and self-employed creatives. and is everything you need to know about self-employed tax deductions. Flushing-Meadows Corona Park in the borough of Queens is the home of the New York Mets, the U.S. Open, the Queens Zoo, the New York Hall of Science and many other recreational delights. But it will always be forever known as the launching pad for the future as represented in two extraordinary 20th century world's fairs. There is so much nostalgia today for the 1939-1940 World's Fair and its stranger, more visually chaotic 1964-65 World's Fair. And that nostalgia has fueled a thriving market for collectables from these fairs -- the souvenirs and other common household items branded with the two fairs' striking visual symbols. The Trylon and Perisphere represented the dreams of 1930s America after the Great Depression, the strange symbols of "the World of Tomorrow." A quarter century later the Unisphere depicted its theme -- "Peace Through Understanding" -- as a space-age fantasy.Millions of souvenirs were manufactured and sold at these two fairs. And those very treasured items which survive -- in the hands of collectors, at flea markets and antique shops -- are nearly all that remain of these special, ephemeral events. In this show, Greg is joined by design and cultural historian Kyle Supley, recorded at Brooklyn's City Reliquary where Supley's own collection of World's Fair has found a permanent home. How do such souvenirs allow us to visit the past? From there, she went to Harvard University where she became the first person in the school's long history to study both astrophysics and folklore & mythology. On April 7, 2021, Moiya earned her PhD in astronomy at Columbia University in New York City, after her successful thesis defense. Moiya researched how the Milky Way's structure influences exoplanet populations. Outside of research, Moiya has written a science fiction novel, designed an exhibit for the New York Hall of Science, and given more than 100 talks and performances about science. You can learn more about Moiya on her website Moiya McTier. Be sure to follow her on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. **************************************** The Weekly Space Hangout is a production of CosmoQuest. Want to support CosmoQuest? Gossip Galaxy here, your one and only source into the scandalous lives of the universe's elite. I have it on *expert* authority that the Milky Way is stirring up cosmic drama. Has this Local Group galaxy had enough of its central black hole? Will they or won't they with Andromeda? And is spaghettification the real dish of the summer? Dr. Moiya McTier and Jonathan tell all in this week's stellar episode. Dr. Moiya McTier is an astrophysicist, folklorist, and science communicator based in New York City. Her new book The Milky Way: An Autobiography of our Galaxy is out now. After graduating from Harvard as the first person in the school's history to study both astronomy and mythology, Moiya earned her PhD in astrophysics at Columbia University where she was selected as a National Science Foundation research fellow. Moiya has consulted with companies like Disney and PBS on their fictional worlds, helped design exhibits for the New York Hall of Science, and given hundreds of talks about science around the globe (including features on MSNBC, NPR, and NowThis News).  To combine her unique set of expertise, Moiya hosts and produces the Exolore podcast that explores fictional world-building through the lens of science. When she's not researching space or imagining new worlds, Moiya can likely be found watching trashy reality TV with her cat, Kosmo. You can follow Dr. McTier on Twitter and Instagram @goastromo, and at moiyamctier.com. Join the conversation, and find out what former guests are up to, by following us on Instagram and Twitter @CuriousWithJVN. Jonathan is on Instagram and Twitter @JVN and @Jonathan.Vanness on Facebook.Transcripts for each episode are available at JonathanVanNess.com. Love listening to Getting Curious? The Borough We Became: Queens Residents On Life During COVID-19

The  Queens Memory Project  brings you the seventh episode of season two of the  Queens Memory Podcast.  This season we have collected the documented experiences of Queens residents during the COVID-19 Pandemic. On this episode Queens leaders talk about campaigning during a quarantine and ways they have found to continue to support their communities.    Unemployment filings skyrocketed as COVID-19 settled upon New York City and the world as businesses closed and workers were laid off. By early May, the New York Department of Labor  announced they had paid $6.8 billion in unemployment since the start of the pandemic. This number is nearly three times greater than the total unemployment payments made in 2019. While  food pantries  and other nonprofits scrambled to answer the call for help, their resources were  strained  by the sharp spike in need. On August 1st, Queens residents gathered outside the New York Hall of Science to receive food distributions. Senator Jessica Ramos hosted the event, which also offered  free COVID-19 testing.  Senator Ramos hosted regular fresh food  distribution events  in the months after the pandemic upended life and income for many Queens residents. The event on August 1st was the 14th distribution. Michael Pereira, who was born and raised in Queens, was in attendance and talked about how this time away from work  has enabled him to take better care of himself physically and mentally. He also talks about the  systemic dietary oppression  Latinx families face, as well as, the negative health impacts of  low-income, predominantly minority neighborhoods due to low housing quality.  Meanwhile, politicians and aspiring leaders try to adapt to campaigning and staying in touch with communities while social distancing.  Queens resident  Mary Jobaida  was forced to derail her campaign for the New York State Assembly District 37 when the shutdown began. Jobaida immigrated to Queens from Bangladesh in 2001 and has lived in the area ever since. She talks about watching the gentrification of neighborhoods, pricing herself and her neighbors out of options. A 2019  report  by the Association for Neighborhood and Housing Development found that, in Queens, the neighborhoods of Jamaica and Hollis were most at risk. This  map  shows gentrification throughout all of New York City. Jobaida decided to run for State Assembly in District 37 to help those who have been affected, against incumbent  Catherine Nolan  who was first elected in 1984. Jobaida says she originally thought about running for State Assembly in 2018. She filed the paperwork to do so in spring of 2019, using her professional name “Mary.” In April 2020, the board of elections removed her from the ballot upon learning her full name is Meherunnisa. Their stated reason being that the name in the application filing must match the candidate’s legal name. Jobaida, along with Moumita Ahmed, who was also removed for the same reason,  sued the BOE,  claiming xenophobia was behind the decision. In May, a  judge ruled  the two women will appear on the ballot. Continuing her campaign while social distancing, Jobaida was severely limited. A number of her organizers and campaigners contracted COVID-19, four of whom died.  One month before the election, unable to afford mailers, Jobaida utilized volunteers to operate phone banks. The Democratic Primary Election took place on June 23, 2020.  Jobaida lost  to incumbent Catherine Nolan by 1,153 votes. Jobaida won 5,041 votes, while Nolan won 6,554. Jobaida suspects if she had been able to campaign in person, she would have won, and vows to continue the fight.  Brent O’Leary  of Long Island City is running for City Council, District 26, which includes Long Island City, Sunnyside, Woodside, and part of Astoria. O’Leary  announced his campaign  in the summer of 2018 - three years before the 2021 election. Now, he’s glad his campaign launched so early, as they were able to build momentum. However, the pandemic has slowed fundraising, he said, as most funds are normally raised during in-person events. He is also reluctant to ask people for money in the midst of the pandemic. Instead, O’Leary co-founded two emergency food pantries, in  Sunnyside  and  Woodside.  Ultimately, official campaign events ceased, but remaining active in his community helped keep O’Leary in the public eye, and demonstrated his priorities, he said. The campaign is now getting back on its feet. O’Leary talks about his support of the current  Senate bill  to cancel rent for small businesses who are struggling due to COVID-19. On last week’s episode of Queens Memory Podcast, we heard from local small business owners about the impact the pandemic has had on their businesses. According to a Hospitality Alliance  survey,  only 19% of New York City businesses paid rent in June, and only 26% of landlords waived any rent. With the primary election less than a year away, O’Leary wonders what campaigning will look like in the coming months. Across the country, candidates have had to transition their campaigns to socially distanced tactics. Read about what State Congressional and Senate candidates are doing differently to campaign in the  New Yorker  and  NY1. With an uncertain future, O’Leary commits  to heed  professional advice  regarding COVID-19, praises New York City for its  effective response  to the virus, and voices support for the effective  use of masks  in preventing the spread of the disease.   This episode of Queens Memory was produced by Jordan Gass-Poore’ in conjunction with Anna Williams, Giulia Hjort, Roshni Khatri, Jo-Ann Wong, and Natalie Milbrodt.  Mixing and editing by Briana Stodden with music composed by Elias Ravin and the Blue Dot Sessions.  Special thanks for funding support from the New York Community Trust. Research Practice Partnerships, otherwise known as RPPs, are important. Just like in any other field, good researchers are constantly thinking about how to bring relevance and purpose to their research. RPPs make strategic partners out of researchers and practitioners to dig into what the field needs to know in the present, and closely study what’s working and what’s not.Guests from Hive Research Lab, New York University, and UC Irvine discuss the recently-published Toolkit for Brokering Youth Pathways, available online at Hiveresearchlab.org. Educators can access a series of what they’re calling “practice briefs” for youth programs to help realize promising (and sometimes less-promising) methods for leveraging youth participation for the purpose of building connections between too-often disparate learning experiences.Rafi Santo, Ph.D., is a learning scientist focused on the intersection of digital culture, education, and institutional change. If you know A.J., you'll know why this is the one event you don't want to miss. He's a master at creating a huge media splash. The Global Family Reunion is set for June 6, 2015 at The New York Hall of Science, on the grounds of the World's Fair. James is a featured speaker along with George H.W. "Delusional opportunism is a wonderful thing and sometimes it pays off." A.J. is a master at marketing and he tells James some of the hacks he's using to get the word out. This entire experiment will eventually become a book. They talk about their personal writing styles and techniques. AJ says that even if he's stuck, he'll just start typing. A light dims, but a star shines. Alan J. Friedman, the soft spoken physicist who reinvigorated the New York Hall of Science and helped usher in a new way to think about museums died on May 4, 2014. He was my friend and colleague. He was also one of the greatest thinkers in our field. I was fortunate to have interviewed him for Museum Life in December about trends both positive and negative that he was noticing in the science centers. So to honor his memory and to remind us that great thoughts never die, I am re-airing that wonderful conversation.

In 1975 John Holmstrom co-founded PUNK magazine with Ged Dunn, JR. It spear-headed the punk movement and was instrumental in the success of Blondie, The Ramones, the Dead Boys and other New York City punk bands. Its hand-lettered graphics inspired many crudely-designed fanzines in its wake, and its feature-length photo comics predated the graphic novels of today. PUNK also created the punk art, a short-lived but long-forgotten movement that inspired the East Village art scene a few years later. John Holmstrom has also drawn posters, t-shirt designs, record, book and CD covers for The Ramones, Blondie, The Dandy Warhols, Murphy's Law, MeatDepressed, The Kowalskis, The Cooties and Mykel Board. He also produced work for Scholastic, the Village Voice, High Times, Heavy Metal, Video Games and many other magazines. In 2000, 25 years after starting it, Holmstrom re-launched PUNK magazine, publishing several new issues, a comic book (Bosko), and in 2013 a book: The Best of PUNK Magazine. He's currently licensing PUNK- and Holmstrom-related images and artwork for clothing everything from baby clothes to high-end fashion-around the world. He also contributed art, graphics and animation to the upcoming CBGB Film, which will be released on October 10th in theaters around the country.*Monte A. Melnick was the Ramones Tour Manager (and much more) throughout their entire 22 year career (1974-1996, 2,263 live shows). His book “On The Road with the Ramones” is an insider's look from the people who were actually there, witnessing and experiencing all the extreme highs and lows of one of rock's greatest bands. The book is packed with interviews from the Ramones and people who where very close to the band. There are over 250 photographs and pictures of memorabilia Monte collected along the way.  Monte now works at The New York Hall of Science in Corona Queens New York as their 3D Theater Audio/Visual Supervisor.
