During February 2024, the latest storm brought 1.99 inches of rain to Southern California so far, bringing this month's total rainfall to 12.56 inches. The latest storm dropped 1.99 inches of rain in downtown Los Angeles and it makes it the fourth wettest February in downtown Los Angeles since 1877 when records first were reported. The monster storm triggered hundreds of mudslides across Los Angeles. Why do they happen? Our story takes 500 years to the past back to the Aztec Empire, who believed in a complex and diversified pantheon of gods and goddesses.Tlaloc, the god of rain, water, and earthly fertility, is one of the most ancient deities in all Mesoamerica. The Aztecs believed that if sacrifices were not supplied for Tlaloc, rain would not come, their crops would not flourish, and so, human sacrifices were performed...child sacrifices. Visual accounts of Aztec sacrificial practice are principally found in codices and some Aztec statuary. Many visual renderings were created for Spanish patrons and thus may reflect European preoccupations and prejudices.Archaeologists have found the remains of at least 42 children sacrificed to Tlaloc at the Great Pyramid of Tenochtitlan. Tlaloc required the tears of the young as part of the sacrifice. The priests made the children cry on their way to immolation: a good omen that Tlaloc would wet the earth in the rainy season. The Tlaloc Monolith is among the most photographed public artworks in Mexico City. Standing on the grounds of the National Anthropology Museum it represents an ancient deity of rain and water. The monument was buried from at least the 16th century in San Miguel Coatlinchán, east of Mexico City in Mexico State, and found in the mid-19th century. In 1964 the statue was moved to Mexico City. The move of the Tlaloc Monolith was accompanied by a tremendous downpour that flooded much of the city center. It's never been forgotten. Was the wrath of the rain and water God awaken? Los Angeles is a big place. Sprawling is the description most give it, and that feels so apt once you spend a few days here. It's not a top to bottom type of city, but left to right, almost like a city laid out like a book. A city of narratives and chapters. And right now, there aren't many an artists who seem to be writing a tale quite like Ozzie Juarez. As a painter, curator and incubator, Juarez and his Tlaloc Studios is telling the modern story of LA to not only the rest of the world, but to itself. It's LA about LA; and it's unlike any story being told today. On this episode of the Radio Juxtapoz podcast, Jux editor Evan Pricco sits down with Ozzie days after the opening of one of the most talked about shows of the LA season: his solo OXI-DIOS at Charlie James Gallery. He still feels the buzz, but will soon turn his attention back to his curatorial duties with TRADITIONS at Muzeo down the road in Orange County and taking part in what may be the show of the year, At the Edge of the Sun, opening at Jeffrey Deitch Gallery just in time for Frieze LA. This is where Ozzie is at. Whether its in the blue chip galleries of West LA, Tlaloc in South Central or his own solo show in Chinatown, he is the pulse of LA. The Radio Juxtapoz podcast is hosted by FIFTH WALL TV's Doug Gillen and Juxtapoz editor, Evan Pricco. Episode 131 was recorded on January 25, 2024 in Los Angeles. Follow us on @radiojuxtapoz
Sterf. Weerzin. Gestorven. Grafhond. Nachtwraak. Gevlerkt. Knoest. Wederganger. Willoos. Verwoed. Melancholie. Witte wieven. Ravenzang. Verval. Kastijder. De gevreesde ziekte. Vreemdeling. Asregen. Woudloper. Heidendoder. Bottenberg. Bezwering. Plaagdrager. Nevelrijk. Grauw. Kwade droes. Laster. Sagenland. Hellevaerder. Avondschemer. Is het een haiku? De depressie-editie van de Dikke Van Dale? Of toch gewoon een scheldpartij uit Ex on the Beach?

Myths and legends surrounding an ancient Saturn are embedded in archaeology artifacts and historical documents. Saturn was personified and named Kronos by the Greeks; Shamash Enki-Ea and Tammuz by the Babylonians; Re (or Ra), Ptah, Temu, Atum or Osiris by the Egyptians; Moloch by the Phoenicians; Brahma and Satyavrata by the Hindus, Quetzalcoatl, Tlaloc, Ce-acatl, and Huracan by the Mayas, and El or Eloah by the Hebrews. Saturn has a Latin name “Stella Solis” meaning “Sun Star.” Earth was an actual satellite of Saturn (“The Saturn Myth” by David N. Talbot). Talbot proposed, “Saturn – fixed at the celestial pole – loomed massively overhead, a central sun venerated by all mankind,” “A polar sun,” “Primeval sun,” “Terrifying splendor,” “A visual pivoting of the heavens,” and it provided a symbol of “Order to the heavens.” The earth would have shared the same axis of rotation with Saturn at a fixed position directly above the earth, and so Saturn would appear to neither rise nor set. “Saturn's immobility is indicated when Ra is lauded as the God who is resting on his high place.” In Hebrew, Saturn takes the name Kokab Sabet, which means resting star or planet. The planet loomed as an “awesome and terrifying light.” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/david-nishimoto/message

The Aztec deity known as Tlaloc is regarded as the god of rain, water, and agriculture. He was also a fearsome and powerful deity who frequently caused severe droughts and storms to express his displeasure. He was regarded as a benevolent deity who provided much-needed nourishment, but he was also an unpredictable and cruel one who sent storms, lightning and drought. In the Aztec Creation myth, Tlaloc was the ruler of the 3rd Sun. He was also linked to the deer known as Mzatl, and he was regarded as one of the most significant figures in the Lord of the Night and the Lords of the Day. The origins of the god are probably much earlier as he shares many similarities with the Olmec God IV and the Mayan God B or Chac. Tlaloc was created during the creation phase after Huitzilpochtli and Quetzalcoatl dismembered a reptilian creature known as Cipactli. He was often associated with various weather conditions such as storms, floods, ice, and rain.Read the full details at https://mythlok.com/tlaloc/
The name of the deity Quetzalcoatl comes from the Nahuatl language, and it means "Precious Serpent," which is a reference to the serpent that is associated with the god. Quetzalcoatl was a prominent deity in the Aztec pantheon, as he was related to various phenomenon such as the planet Venus, the wind, and the sun and was also the patron of the Aztec priesthood. Aside from these, he was also associated with other gods such as Tlaloc, Huitzilopochtli, and Tezcatlipoca. In ancient Mesoamerica, Quetzalcoatl was one of the most important gods. He was known for his role in the creation of the world and its inhabitants. His name combines the Nahuatl words coatl and quetzal. From 1200, Quetzalcoatl was regarded as the patron deity of merchants and priests in Central Mexico. He was also known for inventing the calendar and was associated with various animals, such as the opossum and also the Morning Star Venus. He also discovered a mountain full of seeds and grains.Following the arrival of Nahua-speaking tribes in the north, Quetzalcoatl's cult underwent significant changes. During the Toltec era, his temple was the centre of ceremonial life in the city of Tula and the culture emphasises war and human sacrifice.Read more at https://mythlok.com/quetzalcoatl/

In a country such as Mexico, where the success or failure of the crops depends entirely upon the rainfall, Tlaloc, the Rain God, was a deity of high importance. He made his home in the mountains which surround the valley of Mexico, as these were the source of the local rainfall, and his popularity is vouched for by the fact that sculptured representations of him occur more often than those of any other of the Mexican deities.
