This podcast provides an overview of fascism as both an ideology and a political tactic. In what ways was Nazi Germany a typical fascist state? This episode is one small part of my larger podcast series called "Nazi Germany and the Battle for the Human Heart."  How does something like the rise of Nazi Germany happen? Why? Who's responsible? What is fascism? What did it mean to be a Nazi? What role did the average person have in the development of the Nazi state? How responsible is the ordinary person in the development of great evil? How did nazism infect schools, institutions, and bureaucracy? Just how racist was the average person in Germany at the time? Why did the Holocaust happen? Who were the killers and why did they do it? Did anyone stand up to all of this evil? This series is an attempt to answer all of these questions in the specific context of Nazi Germany, and to show that as William Faulkner once said, "the only thing worth writing about is the human heart in conflict with itself." It's based on an audio course I made several years ago called "Nazi Germany and the Battle for the Human Heart," with some brand new added content, remastered audio, and a new introduction and conclusion. Thanks for listening and for all the support over the years... The story of the Aztec Empire is a story unlike any other. From it's origins as a nomadic underdog, to it's ascendance at the rich and powerful city of Tenochtitlan, to it's clash of civilizations with the mighty Spanish Empire, this is a historical story that will never happen again. If you think you know the full story, think again. For hundreds of years myths and half-truths about the Spanish conquest have clouded the historical narrative. Even the name "Aztec" belies the deep connection between myth and history. Five hundred years later, it's time to delve into Aztec Memories. -Consider Supporting the Podcast!- Leave a rating or review on apple podcasts or spotify! The Columbian Exchange remains maybe the most significant historical development in modern history-setting the stage for the world we inhabit today. In modern day Mexico, the post-conquest colonial period led to the beginnings of many processes that would define Mexico and the Americas for years to come-the encomienda system, the racial casta system, class struggle in Mexico, tension between Spanish and indigenous, and the sparks of future Revolution. With the benefit of hindsight and counterfactuals, it's worth asking if the Columbian Exchange was the best or worst outcome we could have gotten? For many fans of history, the story of the Aztec empire ends with the Spanish conquest and the fall of Tenochtitan. But there was a post-conquest period, lasting for hundreds of years, in which the Spanish exerted authority and control over the people of the former Aztec Empire. The Mexica people had to make difficult decisions about conversion to Christianity, how much tribute to pay to the Spanish, how to incorporate the new rule of the Spanish into their lives, and how to deal with violence and terror. For some who thought life under the Spanish would be an improvement over Aztec rule, they may have been sorely disappointed. This is Part VII in a series on the rise, fall, and enduring legacy of the Aztec Empire. In this episode I discuss life under the Spanish in the post conqust period for the Mexica people, new tribute systems, violence and terror as tools of Spanish authority, Cortes' and Malintzin's expedition to Central America, conversion to Christianity and the difficulties both sides faced with this, and more. This is the second to last episode of the series.  -Consider Supporting the Podcast!- Leave a rating or review on apple podcasts or spotify! The Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire provides a great opportunity to think about many complex historical questions. How should we think about topics of colonialism and conquest from a modern lens? How are morality and historical narrative closely tied together? How did Spanish people and Mexica people think about the conquest both at the time and deep into the future? The answers to these questions give insight into how morality and psychology are at the center of many historical stories.  This is Part VI in a series on the rise, fall, and enduring legacy of the Aztec Empire. In this episode I discuss colonialist narratives of history, the "civilizing mission" and how morality was at the center of the Spanish conquest, the Quetzocoatl narrative of the Spanish conquest, Jared Diamond's Guns Germs and Steel hypothesis, and how both sides of this conflict felt cognitive dissonance at the time and in their later tellings of their histories. -Consider Supporting the Podcast!- Leave a rating or review on apple podcasts or spotify! After crushing the Chontal Maya city states, Hernando Cortez and his Spanish conquistadors set their sights on the Aztec Empire. But would the ensuing conquest have been possible without Malintzin? It discusses the arrival of the Spanish and their interactions with the Chontal Maya, some background on Hernando Cortez and the Spanish politics in the Carribean, the role of Malintzin (or Malinche or Dona Marina or Malintze) in the conquest, the Spanish war with the Tlaxacalans, and beginnings of the war with the Aztec Empire.  -Consider Supporting the Podcast!- Leave a rating or review on apple podcasts or spotify! The Aztec Empire at its height in the 1400's was a flourishing civilization that had a rich social and cultural tradition. In addition to the political realities of statebuilding-war, tribute, human sacrifice, and slavery, the Mexica people took care of their families, tended to gardens, ate rich foods, listened to music, participated in religious ceremonies, bought and sold goods in markets, and took part in long distance trade. Life in Tenochtitlan at the height of empire was a sight to behold, but something was coming over the horizon that would alter that vision of empire forever... This is Part III in a series on the rise, fall, and enduring legacy of the Aztec Empire. It discusses social and cultural life in Tenochtitlan, everyday life for different classes of people, and the political realities of day to day life. From their new base in Tenochtitlan, the Mexica people slowly built the Aztec Empire over the course of the 1300's. While the "myth of the Aztec" ascribes this accomplishment to the barbarism of human sacrifice and brutality, the Mexica both lived in a particular context and shaped their own unique political environment. Demystifying what the Spanish referred to as superstition and barbarism, this episode looks at the Aztec political system, and how the complex interplay of many different factors allowed the Aztec to dominate the Valley of Mexico.  This is Part II in a series on the rise, fall, and enduring legacy of the Aztec Empire. It discusses the political realities of the Aztec Empire, including polygny, marriage alliances, slavery, tribute systems, warfare, brutality and atrocities, and slavery. This episode also discusses the Mexica relationship with Tlaxcala, a rival city state, and the ritualized and brutal "Flower Wars" fought every year between them.  -Consider Supporting the Podcast!- Leave a rating or review on apple podcasts or spotify! The story of the Aztec Empire is a story unlike any other. From it's origins as a nomadic underdog, to it's ascendance at the rich and powerful city of Tenochtitlan, to it's clash of civilizations with the mighty Spanish Empire, this is a historical story that will never happen again. If you think you know the story, think again. For hundreds of years myths and half-truths about the Spanish conquest have clouded the historical narrative. Even the name "Aztec" belies the deep connection between myth and history. This is Part I in a series on the rise, fall, and enduring legacy of the Aztec Empire. It looks at the migration of early man into the Americas, the origins of the Mexica people as wandering nomad warriors, mesoamerican history and the development of agriculture there, the legacy of the Olmec, Maya, Toltec, and Teotihuacan, the Nahua language and cultural group, the arrival of the Mexica at Tenochtitlan, and more. The story will continue in Part II. -Consider Supporting the Podcast!- Leave a rating or review on apple podcasts or spotify! In 20th century China, ordinary people had to make incredibly hard decisions every day to simply survive. One generation passed the torch of war and death to the next, and people had to live with the consequences. Families, identities, and histories hung in the balance as lives were constantly uprooted and reshuffled. In this episode  I'm joined by Eve Chung to talk about her book “Daughters of Shandong.” This is Eve's debut novel, having spent much of her life as a human rights lawyer. The book is historical fiction, but it takes place in the midst of the communist takeover of China, and it's based on Eve's real family fleeing the mainland to try to get out of China, and the complex questions of morality and identity that were part of that attempt.  Eve and I discuss the generational trauma of the past, gender roles in China during this time period, the morality of the Chinese Civil War, the realities of trying to flee communism and the refugee experience, what factors motivated people to pick a side in this war, Eve's research and writing process in creating this book, the importance of historical fiction, and more.  -Consider Supporting the Podcast!- Leave a rating or review on apple podcasts or spotify! Delving into the psychology of memory, development and coming of age, mental health, depression, what it means to have emotions and feelings, financial burdens and weights and what that does to people, vulnerability, ambiguity, self destruct mechanisms, and much more-“Aftersun” is  a wonderful father/daughter story, but also a deeper examination into beginnings and endings-and just like memory itself, it is told through shadows, reflections, and mirrors.  This is part one in a six part series on the 2022 movie “Aftersun.” You can find the rest of the series on Patreon page here: https://www.patreon.com/reflectinghistory. Philosophers and Psychologists have often imagined a "blank slate" to put different theories of human nature to the test. What would humanity be if you stripped away all the culture, all the pressures, all the social interactions that shape us on a daily basis? In Cormac McCarthy's "The Road," he takes this idea to the next level by examining characters in the ultimate stripped down universe-the post apocalyptic world of The Road. What do memories, evil, goodness, and meaning look like at the end of the world? This is Part 2 in a series on Cormac McCarthy's novel "The Road." If you're reading along at home, it covers the first two thirds of the book, up to the survival bunker and the duo sitting back to back on the road. The upcoming final episode will conclude the series and cover the rest of the book.  -Consider Supporting the Podcast!- Leave a rating or review on apple podcasts or spotify! "You forget what you want to remember and you remember what you want to forget." Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" imagines a post-apocalyptic world that puts other dystopian atmospheres to shame with its bleak hopelessness. Staring into the darkest parts of the abyss, it asks some of the most basic yet important questions humanity can ask-What is the value of a story? What is the story of humanity, and how will it end?  What does a dead world like this say about human nature? What no longer matters and what suddenly does? This is Part 1 in a series on Cormac McCarthy's novel "The Road." If you are reading along at home I cover the first 50 pages or so of the book in this episode. In this episode I'm joined by historian Ruby Lal. Ruby is Professor of South Asian history at Emory University and the author of several books, including her latest: "Vagabond Princess: The Great Adventures of Gulbadan." We discuss the Mughal Empire-the descendants of the great nomadic empires of Genghis Khan, the Mongols, and Tamerlane. We talk about the cultural, economic, and military of achievements of the Mughals, Gulbadan's life as a princess of the Mughal empire, her incredible and unprecedented journey to Mecca-and the political drama that caused between the Mughal and Ottoman empires, leadership and authority in general during this time period, the role of Islam on culture and economics, women in the Mughal empire, Harem politics, and the role of the Portuguese in disrupting the Indian Ocean trade status quo at the time. We also get into the nature of historiography a little bit and the purpose of history, what it means to tell a historical story, why some sources and stories get silenced slowly over time, how themes of oblivion and erasure run through Ruby's work as a historian, and much more.  Ruby Lal is Professor of South Asian history at Emory University and the author of several books, including "Empress: The Astonishing Reign of Nur Jahan," a Los Angeles Book Prize finalist in 2018. -Consider Supporting the Podcast!- Leave a rating or review on apple podcasts or spotify! Traveling salesman Gregor Samsa wakes up one morning to find out he's been transformed into some sort of hideous bug. The story that follows in Franz Kafka's masterpiece "The Metamorphosis" offers insight into human nature, identity, change, the nature of kindness, and more. Does the mundane and day to day nature of life rob us of our spirituality and turn us all into monsters? What is the hideous bug that Gregor has turned into an allusion to? And why should we care? A classic for a reason, "The Metamorphosis" is equal parts sad, funny, and relevant today.  In Part III of Kafka's "The Metamorphosis," Gregor's story concludes in tragic fashion. In this episode I take a look at the final act and talk about the overall meaning and interpretations of the story. This is the final part in a 3 part series on the book. While not being the book many fans wanted (and still haven't gotten…), George R.R. Martin's 2018 “Fire and Blood”, a fictional history prequel to "A Game of Thrones" is worthy of historical examination in its own right. Aside from being a lesson to historians in how to write entertaining, captivating history, it also offers insight into some of the bigger themes and ideas related to the study of history and the historical process. Why does history focus on war so much? Who determines which events are important in history and how they should be remembered? What happens if there are different perspectives on the same event? At what point do the "positives" of empire like infrastructure and commerce negate the negatives of conquest, brutality, and oppression? "Fire and Blood" is a fun standalone fantasy history book, but it's also more relevant to the real world than you might think. -Consider Supporting the Podcast!- Leave a rating or review on apple podcasts or spotify! We hope you all do still enjoy it if you decide to read on anyways! And let us know what you think! It was a bit too long of a pick (Brett's fault) for the busiest month of the year, and we have less time than expected this month, so a pivot was needed. We have instead decided to read the highly recommended Piranesi by Susanna Clark. We promise no DNF this time. Let us know what you think of the switch and what your thoughts are on DNF'ing. This is Part II in a two part series on Alfonso Cuaron's 2018 masterpiece "Roma." This episode covers the second half of the movie and discusses themes of loneliness, isolation, and belonging. It also looks at struggles over land reform in the Mexican countryside, one of the primary instigators of the Dirty War. Finally it examines the 1971 Corpus Christi Massacre, a seminal moment in Mexican history. One of my favorite movies, I recommend giving it a watch before or after listening! The story of an indigenous housekeeper in 1970's Mexico City allows us to examine themes of Mexican history-class, race, status, violence, and more. As the Dirty War rages in the Mexican countryside, that violence starts to creep into the urban world and the personal life of the main character-Cleo. Both a personal and universal journey, the film is meant to be somewhat autobiographical account of director Alfonso Cuaron's early life in Mexico City. History as a memory.  -Consider Supporting the Podcast!- Leave a rating or review on apple podcasts or spotify! The story of an indigenous housekeeper in 1970's Mexico City allows us to examine themes of Mexican history-class, race, status, violence, and more. As the Dirty War rages in the Mexican countryside, that violence starts to creep into the urban world and the personal life of the main character-Cleo. Both a personal and universal journey, the film is meant to be somewhat autobiographical account of director Alfonzo Cuaron's early life in Mexico City. History as a memory.  This is Part I in a two part series on Alfonzo Cuaron's 2018 masterpiece "Roma." This episode covers the first half of the movie and examines themes of masculinity, race, class, and the creeping violence of the dirty war. At what point should peace turn into violence? This episode is Part IV in a series on the Mexican Dirty War. Hi listeners!  Life is a bit frantic for me at the moment – I've sold my house and I'm desperately trying to buy a new one before I have to move out – a task which has proved more difficult and stressful than I'd anticipated.  As a result I've struggled to find the time and headspace to record a new interview for you, so instead I'm bringing one back from the vault! This episode is from my first season back in 2018 – a time when ukulele players could safely go to crowded festivals and hang out together.  When I arranged this interview at the Central Coast Ukulele Festival I had no idea how influential my guests were.  In the three years since, I have lost count of the number of times people I've interviewed have said how these two ukulele players had inspired and helped them – not just Australian players, but people from across the world. Please enjoy this classic episode with Mark Jackson and Jane Jelbart. ORIGINAL SHOW NOTES: In today's episode I chat to Jane Jelbart and Mark Jackson, who performed with the Ukastle Ukestra at the Central Coast Ukulele and Folk Festival in August this year.  Mark and Jane play their rendition of “I'll be Your San Antone Rose” by Susanna Clark. More about Mark and Jane, including their Ukestration manual, can be found at The Sum of the Parts. This episode was recorded at the Central Coast Ukulele and Folk Festival. The music played in this episode is licenced under a Podcasts (Featured Music) agreement with APRA AMCOS.

Five years after the legendary Texas singer and songwriter Guy Clark passed away, his life and legacy is celebrated in a new documentary. Without Getting Killed or Caught brings Guy's colourful life and career to the big screen.  The film is the brainchild of Grammy award-winning music producer, award-winning author, and documentary filmmaker Tamara Saviano. She and her partner in life Paul Whitfield are the co-directors and co-producers. The film looks at Guy Clark's life as he struggles to write poetic songs, while balancing a complicated marriage with his wife Susanna. It is also a story of Guy's friendship with another legendary Texas singer-songwriter, Townes Van Zandt, on whom Susanna forged a passionate dependence. Tamara and Paul talk about what led them to make the documentary, how they gained access to Susanna's diary and audio tapes, and which other films inspired them the most in their filmmaking.  “They are so good at what they do, yet they remain so grounded and humble, and that attracts people to them.” - Tamara Saviano Time Stamps: 00:14 - The trailer for Without Getting Killed or Caught. 03:44 - The premiere of the film at SXSW, and where else the film is being screened. 05:59 - Who Guy and Susanna Clark are. 07:47 - Guy's resistance to being classed as an "outlaw". 09:05 - Why Tamara and Paul decided to use Susanna as the narrator of the film. 10:13 - The relationship Townes Van Zandt had with Guy and Susanna. 14:05 - How Tamara gained possession of Susanna's diaries and tapes. 17:24 - Why Townes didn't fit into Nashville's country music scene. 21:19 - The tension Susanna's success caused to her marriage. 24:44 - The comeback Guy made and why he was arguably more successful than Townes. 27:20 - What "Americana" music is and how it's different from country music. 28:54 - The challenging side of Guy's personal life and how he dealt with the struggle. 31:27 - What the secret is to Guy's "greatness". 33:53 - The best albums to listen to if you want to get to know Guy's music. 36:01 - How Tamara and Paul decided to approach making a documentary about Guy's life. 40:08 - How they got Sissy Spacek to narrate the film. 44:06 - The different documentaries that inspired Paul and Tamara. 47:07 - How they managed to raise the funds on Kickstarter. 51:33 - What's next for Paul and Tamara. In this episode we have a great conversation with film and music Producer/Director/Writer Tamara Saviano about her new Guy Clark, Susanna Clark, and Townes Van Zandt documentary "Without Getting Killed or Caught: The Life and Music of Guy Clark." The 95-minute documentary follows Guy Clark, Susanna Clark, and Townes Van Zandt as they rise from obscurity to reverence: Guy, the Pancho to Van Zandt’s Lefty, struggling to establish himself as the Dylan Thomas of American music, while Susanna pens hit songs and paints album covers for top artists, and Townes spirals in self-destruction after writing some of Americana music’s most enduring and influential ballads. Based on the diaries of Susanna Clark and Saviano’s 2016 book Without Getting Killed or Caught: The Life and Music of Guy Clark, the film tells the saga from Susanna’s point of view, with Academy Award- winner Sissy Spacek voicing Susanna’s narration. Saviano, a longtime figure on the Americana scene as a journalist, artist manager, and Grammy-winning producer, had the complete cooperation of Clark, who sat for interviews on and off camera. Without Getting Killed or Caught (the title comes from Clark’s song, “L.A. Freeway”) also offers poignant reflections from Clark’s closest friends and musical allies, most prominently Rodney Crowell, Steve Earle, Vince Gill, Verlon Thompson, and Terry and Jo Harvey Allen, as well as record  executive Barry Poss. The film, partially funded by a Kickstarter campaign, makes good use of Clark’s songs, family photographs and archives, vintage film footage, and radio talk shows on which Clark appeared solo and in tandem with Van Zandt. The real emotional zing, however, comes from Susanna’s pained remembrances, culled from her private journals and secret audio diaries, as well as taped conversations that Susanna made of the trio and of the “salon” that regularly gathered around them--all serving as witnesses to this seemingly fated intersection of love, art, and tragedy.   Learn more about where to view Tamara's new documentary film, and sign up for email updates at https://www.withoutgettingkilledorcaught.com  Learn more about Tamara Saviano at https://www.tamarasaviano.comLee Zimmerman is a freelance music writer whose articles have appeared in several leading music industry publications. Our guest this week is Tamara Saviano, author, journalist, publicist and Grammy-nominated record producer, who is releasing this spring her documentary about Guy and Susanna Clark called "Without Getting Killed or Caught." Saviano, a long-time friend and collaborator with the Clarks has made a wonderful film that tells the story how Clark and his contemporaries like Townes Van Zandt, Rodney Crowell, Steve Earle and others created an influential songwriting community in Nashville and in Texas in the 1970's. But of greater importance, Saviano's film brings to the fore and highlights Susanna Clark, an accomplished songwriter and artist in her own right.  The documentary stars Academy-Award winning actor Sissy Spacek, who gives voice to Susanna throughout the film. We also discussed some challenges making the a documentary such as this and releasing one during a worldwide pandemic. This will be a must-see film for us at Hooks & Runs -- click on the links above for more information.Chapter 2 - Hall of Famer Hank Aaron passed away last week at age 86. We look back on his legendary career and amazing life, including his chase for the record-breaking 715th career home run that spanned from the final games in 1973 to the first week in the 1974 season. Aaron faced and overcame not only intense publicity generated by the elongated home run chase, but also racially motivated attacks and death threats. Co-host Craig was a pre-teen in these years and talks about his memories living through that exciting time. It's been a rough stretch for baseball fans -- ten Hall of Fame players have passed away since April 2020, including two former Astros - Joe Morgan and Don Sutton. Losing Hank Aaron really hurts.Chapter 3 - The baseball hot stove is heating up as the Cactus and Grapefruit League seasons are around the corner. We examine George Springer's contract with Toronto and how other free agents who signed $100 million contracts after turning 31 have fared. It isn't pretty. Eric and Craig also discuss Kirby Yates to Toronto, Michael Brantley to Toronto, no wait, back to Houston, The Jameson Taillon trade from Pittsburgh to the Yankees and Brad Hand signing with Washington for more money that Washington would have had to pay Hand had they just claimed him off waivers back in November. Baseball signings and trades are just getting started - this will be a regular feature 'til Opening Day.
