I still have almost full skeins of white, light pink, and dark pink. The Bouclé Chicken is waiting to be stuffed and sewn up. Made with wool and silk boucle spirit yarn from this year's NoCKRs destash table. This is my third Emotional Support Chicken and probably won't be my last. I finished knitting the Dream Shawl (The Drifter by Tamy Gore) but I still have to weave in the ends and block it. The Wine and Cheese socks are chugging along and doing their job as the take-along knitting. I'm almost finished with spinning the Corrie x Targhee x Merino wool that I processed and dyed last summer. I should have the 3-ply yarn done by the time the episode is out. Kelly's Projects I am continuing on the Classic Knitted Ripple baby blanket using the Red Heart from my mom. There were two grays, black, white and a partial skein of red. I decided I needed to use the white and the pink. The blanket is wider than a typical baby blanket and will take more yarn. I'm about 12 inches from finishing it. Chickens! Finished: One worsted weight, one fingering weight (size 1 needles). Started one boucle chicken. Out-of-Hibernation Along February 1 - June 1. Have you started? Almost finished with The Drifter by Tamy Gore, Narrow Path Designs. I probably have about 30 rows left in the pattern. For Out of Hibernation I've been spinning the batts of Corriedale x Merino x Targhee that I washed, dyed, and carded last summer. The blue is now finished and I'm working on the red-orange. Winter-Weave-Along Ended! Prize Drawing Next Episode. Seattle Opera Production of Barber of Seville Friday, May 17th 20% discount on tickets with the code KNITTER20 Seattle Opera is having a Relaxed Performance of our production of The Barber of Seville. While there will be no changes to the performance, the experience for the audience will have some alterations including: • Lights being dimmed in the theater instead of fully dark • A relaxed atmosphere allowing patrons to talk and vocalize as they wish • Being able to leave and re-enter the theater as needed • Special areas designated as a technology use area …and much more. These adaptations are designed for a multitude of people and as a knitter myself, I couldn't help but think this would be great for groups of fiber artists to attend and craft throughout the show! Nanny Meier Tea Cozy: Inspired by Lily Pulitzer colors. Using Cascade 220 in hot pink and lime green. Cast on the second side. Fine Sand: by Heidi Kirrmaier. Using West Yorkshire Spinners Illustrious. Finished first sleeve and almost done with second. Alpaca Shawl: I've woven 36”. I thought I would keep alternating twill patterns but I was really struggling getting any kind of rhythm throwing the shuttle. Decided to make larger sections tabby and smaller sections (1-1.5”) twills. Going much better! Socks: The Artful Ewe Clackamas. Halfway down the foot of the first sock. Baby Surprise Jacket: by Elizabeth Zimmerman. This morning I ordered her digital book that has modifications. 30,000+ projects means it must be a great pattern! I'd like to make a hooded jacket modification. Combo Spin #3: Made a swatch of my green combo spin. Trying to decide on a pattern to knit. Combo Spin #4: I needed something a bit mindless at the beach so I started my fourth combo spin in red. Water's Edge Fiber and Dye: taught by Kathleen Adams Olsen. We dye with indigo. Class held in Kathleen's home in Seabrook, WA. Her website is under construction but you can subscribe to her newsletter to be notified of events. I messaged her via Instagram (watersedgefiberanddye) or Facebook (Kathleen Adams Olsen). Kelly's Projects I finished my Ultra Slouch Sockhead Hat with Punk Rock Unicorn Dirty Neon. Ridiculously slouchy hat with a cozy folded brim that can be a double or even triple layer for my ears. I finished the weaving for the Trailer bedroom curtain project. I bought the cord to go through the bottom casing. Now Robertt needs to install the hooks and attach the cord so I can measure one last time and then sew the two rod casings in the curtain fabric. I've stalled a little with The Drifter by Tamy Gore, Narrow Path Designs. I'm on the decreasing end of the long triangle. Dozens of Little Squares I now have five strips sewn together and it's about 17” wide. I've slowed down on this because I started two new projects. For Out of Hibernation I've been spinning the batts of Corriedale x Merino x Targhee that I washed, dyed, and carded last summer. It was half a fleece from Black Sheep Gathering in 2017 (about two pounds). During the summer I spun up a violet and a blue-green 3-ply yarn. I've now spun up the red-purple and I'm currently spinning a bright blue. The final color is a red orange. Between the two colors I have about 12 ounces left to spin. I started another Classic Knitted Ripple baby blanket using the Red Heart from my mom. There were two grays, black, white and a partial skein of red. There are also two different pinks, but I don't think I'll use them. A book recommendation from Kelly–Never Alone: A Solo Arctic Survival Journey, by Woniya Dawn Thibeaut. In Meg Swansen's world, knitting is so much more than knit and purl. It links music, mathematics, deep history, and world-wide communities. It is a platform for creativity, invention, and technical mastery. Music, you say? That's how Meg proceeds merrily along a pattern round of several hundred stitches. She sings the repeat. Or at least chants it. And those long, long pattern rounds comprise her favorite kind of knitting: color-stranded Fair Isle designs. The interplay of color and motif and deep tradition are of endless interest to her. Mathematics are integral to the craft, too, in Meg's world. Her mother's famous EPS, Elizabeth's Percentage System, has empowered generations of knitters to devise their own patterns to suit their own gauges and their own body measurements. Now Meg's son Cully has taken the concept to a new level, riffing off the famous Baby Surprise Jacket with new formulae to suit almost infinite sizes, shapes, and styles. It seems to be a family thing. Impeccable technique matters to Meg, not just for its own sake but for the stories it tells of knitters in far-flung countries and cultures. She's introduced the knitting world to the traditions of Latvia, Armenia, Estonia, Iceland, the Scandinavian countries, the list goes on and on. And it's not just the motifs and styles of these cultures, but the ways of working, the ways of tending to details, that have been refined over many generations, even centuries. Meg has added her own tricks, too, and takes great pleasure in all the difference a simple slip of a needle-tip makes in her signature increase. From her cozy, iconic Red Schoolhouse in the Wisconsin woods, Meg reflects on the hundreds of individual knitters who have come to the annual knitting camp that her mother started in 1974. So much sharing, learning, and teaching have come from these gatherings, and Meg is careful to credit the individuals that have made special contributions. While the camp happens only in the summer, it provides the spirit for a vast community that connects through her semi-annual newsletters, occasional book launches, teaching forays, and social media posts. So much more than knit and purl. This episode is brought to you by: Treenway Silks is where weavers, spinners, knitters and stitchers find the silk they love. Following Ep 171 about great patterns for baby knits and Ep 172 about good yarns for kids and baby knits, this week is a roundup of all the community feedback on both these subjects. I'm also asking for some suggestion on behalf of Kat, a lovely listener, who is undertaking a fairly arduous physical challenge. She'd appreciate some suggestions on how she can record this with an accompanying knitting project. All of the chat for this feedback occurred within the Shinybees Podcast Community. You can join for free at shinybees.com/community Kat's Project Hey Jo, do you remember the interview question 'What yarn would you take on a desert island'? I have a similar dilemma: I'm planning to embark on a long distance hiking journey from Belgium tot Santiago the Compostela (2400km). Not in one go, spread over different holidays. Not sure if I'll ever make it but I like the clear focus. I'll be starting hopefully in March with the first stretch from home to the south trough Belgium. That should fit in the current Corona regulations. Being a Knitter, I find myself contemplating the travel knitting almost as much as the actual walking :D I can't take a lot of yarn to keep weight down. I plan to take two projects: * A recreational lace shawl * A project that captures the memories of the journey day by day. Could be as simple as one garter ridge per km. Or I'm thinking some sort of modular knit with every small module representing a day. I don't really know what I want to track yet: weather (sun, rain, cold,...), feelings, distance, landscape. I don't think I can take colours to represent the different items because it's hard to predict how much yarn I would need per colour. Maybe texture is better. Anyone got ideas? Yarn, patterns, textures? Which items I could track? Yarns for Baby Knits Continued From the community, here are some further suggestions on great yarns for baby and kids knits. Helen Swann suggested Sheepjes Colour Crafter as a good alternative to Stylecraft DK. It's 100% acrylic, like Stylecraft DK, but squooshier, with a fair amount of drape. At £1.99 per 100g and in 94 shades, there's bound to be shades you will like. Wendy Dinnage has been knitting for a couple at work who are expecting a baby. They're vegan and very environmentally aware. Wendy decided to use Nurturing Fibres Eco Bamboo as it has great eco credentials. Patterns for Baby Knits A perennial favourite, Elizabeth Zimmerman's Baby Surprise Jacket from The Knitter's Almanac was suggested by Helen Talbot and Linda Hartley. Knitted With Love by Jane Ellison is a favourite of Nichola Nolan. It's currently out of print, but most of the patterns are available as single patterns from Purl and Jane. Nevis top-down cardigan from Marianna's Lazy Daisy Days was suggested by Laura Stephens. This designer also does some lovely preemie sizes too. Alison Naylor's favourite is the Overalls with Cable Detail and Dorothy Helen baby blanket by Oge Knitwear. Leafy Abby Blanket from Silk and Wool by Leyla Alieva was suggested by Maureen Bulger. She's knitted it a number of times and it's gone down really well. A couple of bonnet suggestions – from Anna Friberg, the Sunshine Bonnet by Katarina Lindhagen, and the Beloved Bonnet by Tin Can Knits was suggested by Laura Stephens. Jade Hawson, who is a new listener, did a fantastic Mosaic Blanket (Purl Soho) using a colour changing gradient yarn, which looks fab! Anna Jordan suggests the Gramps Cardigan by Tin Can Knits. Anna Grim likes to make Allsorts the Owls for new parents. Linda Hartley favours the Troublemaker Cardigan by Kathryn Folkerth. I read a note Elizabeth Zimmermann wrote when she sent a gift for our newborn son...a Baby Surprise Jacket. A Pipeliner, Linda from NH, expresses her passion for our beloved craft of knitting. I clarify the process of threading beads onto yarn for the crochet beaded bind off from last week's show. In response to Irene's question, I talk about how I organize my stash and tell a story about the era of cardboard boxes for stash storage and a teenage son. Nature Notes: John James Audubon. In Needle Notes we discuss selecting yarn for our Norwegian Sweater KAL and I ask for your input on knitting hats for a friend who is in chemotherapy. Finally we conclude with an update on Celtic Cross Pipes and Drums which is preparing for the annual Burns Supper. Musical Selection is from Shira Kammen's CD "A Celebration of Robert Burns", "Flow Gently Sweet Afton." The show is sponsored by my business: www.longaberger.com/paula
On The Needles: Gigi and Jasmin went to the Rosicrucian Museum and admired ancient textiles. [Our friend there was Karenzknitknacks, not Karenbynight.] Jasmin finished her Baby Surprise Jacket, and her Sirius socks. She is casting on a new pair of handspun socks out of Pigeonroof Studios "Mushroom Caps." Gigi is knitting a "vanilla sock" out of Lana grossa Meilenweit in color 5565 (it looks like Trekking), with a Strong Heel (from the Little Box of Socks). Jasmin is working on a sweater for the Purlescence gals (one of their original designs) out of the Manos Silk and Wool. Jasmin finished the spinning on her Pigeonroof Studios Superwash Blue Faced Leicester in "Violet Cherry." Gigi is knitting the Knitting Pure and Simple Wrap Cardigan in Cascade Venezia. When Knitting Attacks! Jasmin had technology go terribly awry when trying to load the video of the sheep shearing onto the computer. As promised: Gigi had killer dust bunnies (with BIG TEETH!) in her sewing machine. Mother Knows Best: When you're done sewing, take the little brush, and tidy up your machine. A keyboard vaccuum and compressed air also work nicely for sewing machine maintenence/clean-up. Ursula bought Gigi this magnetic light for her sewing machine! Jasmin loves continued education, and she and Gigi will be taking a class from Cat Bordhi in Lafayette, CA on Saturday, September 27th at Yarn Boutique. The Stitches West class catalog is up! Events: Saturday, September 27 & Sunday, September 28th: Cat Bordhi's classes at Yarn Boutique! Saturday, October 4th- The Yarn Harlot. Copperfield's Books in Santa Rosa.
