Made with wool and silk boucle spirit yarn from this year's NoCKRs destash table. This is my third Emotional Support Chicken and probably won't be my last.  I finished knitting the Dream Shawl (The Drifter by Tamy Gore) but I still have to weave in the ends and block it.   The Wine and Cheese socks are chugging along and doing their job as the take-along knitting. I'm almost finished with spinning the Corrie x Targhee x Merino wool that I processed and dyed last summer. Kelly's Projects I am continuing on the Classic Knitted Ripple baby blanket using the Red Heart from my mom. There were two grays, black, white and a partial skein of red. I decided I needed to use the white and the pink. The blanket is wider than a typical baby blanket and will take more yarn.  I'm about 12 inches from finishing it.  Chickens! Finished: One worsted weight, one fingering weight (size 1 needles).  Started one boucle chicken.  Out-of-Hibernation Along  February 1 - June 1. Have you started? I'm going to wash in hot water and dry in the dryer one more time, then I might just rehem them a little shorter so they will hug tighter to the window.  Almost finished with The Drifter by Tamy Gore, Narrow Path Designs. I probably have about 30 rows left in the pattern.  For Out of Hibernation I've been spinning the batts of Corriedale x Merino x Targhee that I washed, dyed, and carded last summer. The blue is now finished and I'm working on the red-orange. Also for the Out of Hibernation Along, I finally got all the Spin-In prizes sent out! Cast on the second side. Fine Sand: by Heidi Kirrmaier. Using West Yorkshire Spinners Illustrious. Finished first sleeve and almost done with second. Alpaca Shawl: I've woven 36”. I thought I would keep alternating twill patterns but I was really struggling getting any kind of rhythm throwing the shuttle. Decided to make larger sections tabby and smaller sections (1-1.5”) twills. Going much better! Socks: The Artful Ewe Clackamas. Halfway down the foot of the first sock. Baby Surprise Jacket: by Elizabeth Zimmerman. This morning I ordered her digital book that has modifications. 30,000+ projects means it must be a great pattern! I'd like to make a hooded jacket modification.  Combo Spin #3: Made a swatch of my green combo spin. Trying to decide on a pattern to knit. Combo Spin #4: I needed something a bit mindless at the beach so I started my fourth combo spin in red.  Water's Edge Fiber and Dye: taught by Kathleen Adams Olsen. We dye with indigo. Class held in Kathleen's home in Seabrook, WA. Her website is under construction but you can subscribe to her newsletter to be notified of events. I messaged her via Instagram (watersedgefiberanddye) or Facebook (Kathleen Adams Olsen). Kelly's Projects I finished my Ultra Slouch Sockhead Hat with Punk Rock Unicorn Dirty Neon. Ridiculously slouchy hat with a cozy folded brim that can be a double or even triple layer for my ears. I finished the weaving for the Trailer bedroom curtain project.  I bought the cord to go through the bottom casing. Now Robertt needs to install the hooks and attach the cord so I can measure one last time and then sew the two rod casings in the curtain fabric. I've stalled a little with The Drifter by Tamy Gore, Narrow Path Designs. I'm on the decreasing end of the long triangle. Dozens of Little Squares I now have five strips sewn together and it's about 17” wide. I've slowed down on this because I started two new projects. For Out of Hibernation I've been spinning the batts of Corriedale x Merino x Targhee that I washed, dyed, and carded last summer. It was half a fleece from Black Sheep Gathering in 2017 (about two pounds). During the summer I spun up a violet and a blue-green 3-ply yarn. I've now spun up the red-purple and I'm currently spinning a bright blue. The final color is a red orange. Between the two colors I have about 12 ounces left to spin.  I started another Classic Knitted Ripple baby blanket using the Red Heart from my mom. There were two grays, black, white and a partial skein of red. There are also two different pinks, but I don't think I'll use them.   A book recommendation from Kelly–Never Alone: A Solo Arctic Survival Journey, by Woniya Dawn Thibeaut. On today's episode of the Craft Industry Alliance podcast, we're talking about knitwear design with my guest Andrea Mowry. Andrea is was lucky enough to learn how to knit as a child from her Grandma Ginny. By her late teens, guided by the wisdom of the great Elizabeth Zimmerman and her many books, she began trying to work out her own patterns. After leaving her life as a pastry chef to start a family with her husband, her hands found the necessary freedom to begin creating with fiber instead of flour. Andrea focuses on designing knits to fit the modern wardrobe – fun to knit and easy to wear, with clear directions for every level of knitter. She believes in enjoying every stitch and wearing at least one hand knit every day! Andrea has a great love for indulging in new techniques and skills and then sharing them with other knitters thru her patterns and workshops. Her goal is to leave knitters feeling empowered and inspired, and wrapped up in their own beautiful knits! If she is not knitting, you can probably find her spinning, sewing, weaving or cooking up something yummy for her family! +++++ Today's episode is sponsored by Schacht Spindle Company. Following Ep 171 about great patterns for baby knits and Ep 172 about good yarns for kids and baby knits, this week is a roundup of all the community feedback on both these subjects. I'm also asking for some suggestion on behalf of Kat, a lovely listener, who is undertaking a fairly arduous physical challenge. She'd appreciate some suggestions on how she can record this with an accompanying knitting project. All of the chat for this feedback occurred within the Shinybees Podcast Community. You can join for free at shinybees.com/community Kat's Project Hey Jo, do you remember the interview question 'What yarn would you take on a desert island'? I have a similar dilemma: I'm planning to embark on a long distance hiking journey from Belgium tot Santiago the Compostela (2400km). Not in one go, spread over different holidays. Not sure if I'll ever make it but I like the clear focus. I'll be starting hopefully in March with the first stretch from home to the south trough Belgium. That should fit in the current Corona regulations. Being a Knitter, I find myself contemplating the travel knitting almost as much as the actual walking :D I can't take a lot of yarn to keep weight down. I plan to take two projects: * A recreational lace shawl * A project that captures the memories of the journey day by day. Could be as simple as one garter ridge per km. Or I'm thinking some sort of modular knit with every small module representing a day. I don't really know what I want to track yet: weather (sun, rain, cold,...), feelings, distance, landscape. I don't think I can take colours to represent the different items because it's hard to predict how much yarn I would need per colour. Maybe texture is better. Anyone got ideas? Yarn, patterns, textures? Which items I could track? Yarns for Baby Knits Continued From the community, here are some further suggestions on great yarns for baby and kids knits. Helen Swann suggested Sheepjes Colour Crafter as a good alternative to Stylecraft DK. It's 100% acrylic, like Stylecraft DK, but squooshier, with a fair amount of drape. At £1.99 per 100g and in 94 shades, there's bound to be shades you will like. Wendy Dinnage has been knitting for a couple at work who are expecting a baby. They're vegan and very environmentally aware. Wendy decided to use Nurturing Fibres Eco Bamboo as it has great eco credentials. Patterns for Baby Knits A perennial favourite, Elizabeth Zimmerman's Baby Surprise Jacket from The Knitter's Almanac was suggested by Helen Talbot and Linda Hartley. Knitted With Love by Jane Ellison is a favourite of Nichola Nolan. It's currently out of print, but most of the patterns are available as single patterns from Purl and Jane. Nevis top-down cardigan from Marianna's Lazy Daisy Days was suggested by Laura Stephens. This designer also does some lovely preemie sizes too. Alison Naylor's favourite is the Overalls with Cable Detail and Dorothy Helen baby blanket by Oge Knitwear. Leafy Abby Blanket from Silk and Wool by Leyla Alieva was suggested by Maureen Bulger. She's knitted it a number of times and it's gone down really well. A couple of bonnet suggestions – from Anna Friberg, the Sunshine Bonnet by Katarina Lindhagen, and the Beloved Bonnet by Tin Can Knits was suggested by Laura Stephens. Jade Hawson, who is a new listener, did a fantastic Mosaic Blanket (Purl Soho) using a colour changing gradient yarn, which looks fab! Anna Jordan suggests the Gramps Cardigan by Tin Can Knits. Anna Grim likes to make Allsorts the Owls for new parents. Linda Hartley favours the Troublemaker Cardigan by Kathryn Folkerth. Teaching Your Brain to Knit

Today on episode 104 of the Teaching Your Brain to Knit podcast we have a special treat:  an interview with master knitting teacher Anna Zilboorg.  I recorded this last October while on an Camp Stitches workshop in Coeur d’Alene Idaho.  I was excited to be registered in Anna’s workshop-- Design as You Go Construction.  I have all of Anna’s book and I’ve long admired her philosophy and approach to knitting that she lays out in her book Knitting for Anarchists.   In this interview about both quilting and knitting, Anna shares a bit of her own history, she touches on meditative knitting,  she celebrates our hands,  she talks about learning through the mind and learning with the hands and she worries about knitting becoming rote and- rule bound rather than people growing into being being craftspeople.   Anna's books on Amazon:   https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Anna+Zilboorg&ref=nb_sb_noss_2   Look for her classes at Stitches events.     Information from Wikipedia on terms Anna uses:     accusative —  i.e.  They like them — they is nominative, them is accusative   reflexive  is used when the object of a sentence is the same as the subjective   myself, herself, oneself  In grammar, a reflexive verb is, loosely, a verb whose direct object is the same as its subject, for example, "I wash myself". More generally, a reflexive verb has the same semantic agent and patient (typically represented syntactically by the subject and the direct object). For example, the English verb to perjure is reflexive, since one can only perjure oneself. In a wider sense, the term refers to any verb form whose grammatical object is a reflexive pronoun, regardless of semantics; such verbs are also referred to as pronominal verbs, especially in grammars of the Romance languages. In the Romance languages, the pronominal verbs is a parent category with reflexive verbs as only one of its sub-categories. Other kinds of pronominal verbs are reciprocal (they killed each other), passive (it is told), subjective, idiomatic (the presence of the reflexive pronoun   In her book Splendid Apparel,  Anna writes that her mother worried she thought too much about her knitting and directed her towards more academic pursuits.   Anna was educated at Harvard and taught at MIT but eventually left the academic world of the mind.   She is skeptical of brain oriented knitting and credits the hands for their own intelligence, especially in crafts.   She encourages people to understand their knitting and not just follow the rules.   She’s a bit like Elizabeth Zimmerman in that way.   But Anna also offers detailed instruction on techniques.  The traveling twisted stitch is one of them.  And she’s unvented and adapted a number of other techniques     I’ve edited out a lot of this free wheeling interview although I believe some of you would have enjoyed discussions of feminism and academic politics.   But I wanted to focus on Anna’s journey from the straight lines and head thinking of the academic world to the wandering and explorative world of her hands and her heart.   She is now an Anglican solitary who lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and she teaches knitting  at workshops and conferences on the side.    Throughout the recording, I’ll stop and explain what I’ve edited out and where we’ll head next.      I begin by asking her about something she said in class and writes about in her books:  Knitting instructions never used to be written and learned from —They weren’t even spoken and listened to.  They were demonstrated and copied.     Just to expand a bit on hand learning versus mind learning.   Anna writes in her book Magnificent Mittens and Socks:  “About learning, there is one thing to say:   it isn’t easy.  It is always difficult for fingers to learn to do something new.  On the other hand, when they do, they learn it.   They never forget it , unlike the mind which learns easily and forgets quickly.”   BAck to the interview.     Even though I got the gist of what Anna was saying, I wasn’t familiar with the terms accusative and reflexive so I looked them up.  In Russian, teach and learn are the same verb but a different form.   The reflexive is when something is done to oneself.  Like, I perjure myself.   A person can only perjure one’s self.   No one else can do it to them.   In this instance I believe , the students teach themselves.    The Accusative is when something is done to someone.   In English we say the teacher teaches the student.   Something is being done to the students.   Like Anna says, like a mother bird stuffing the mouths of a baby bird.  This wasn’t very appealing to her.   From this insight of another way of teaching, Anna was more open to teaching as a career.  But as you can imagine, she didn’t approach it in an orthodox way.   A portion of the interview is edited out although I left in our discussion of climate crisis.  Then we broach the subject of brain or mind learning versus the hands learning.     I’ve edited out a large section of discussion on academic politics.   We discussed Anna's frustration and disappointment with teaching at MIT and her leaving it without any firm idea of how she’d make a living.  She used part of this time to explore her spirituality and her interest in what has traditionally been known as “women’s work”.   She turned to quilting and sold her quilts to help   support herself flirted with getting a post doc in divinity but was not willing to return to academia.        As I mentioned earlier, I took Anna’s classes at Camp Stitches. Camp Stitches is a three day immersive knitting workshop with one teacher hosted by Knitting Universe usually at a luxury hotel in some beautiful place.   Yes, it’s a little spendy but what an incredible opportunity to get to know and learn from a teacher.  Anna was teaching the enormously flexible technique of making a vest or sweater by knitting and embellishing strips or panels and then usually joining them as you go.   This approach allows you to design or change your mind as you go.   In addition to the overall construction, we learned Twisted travel stitches, a number of embroidery stitches,  her perfect button hole,  and a variety of general knitting tips and tricks.   She teaches using the traditional way of one-on-one instruction enhanced by other approaches:  she demonstrates to the class from the front of the classroom, sometimes using the board;  then she goes around to each person and watches them execute the technique or coaches them.  She encourages the class for the tricky parts.   She had us learn to knit and purl backwards and kept saying “You can do it.   You can do it.”  And we did.  In the end, our hands learned these techniques.   Anna teaches at Stitches events.   I encourage you to take one of her classes or indulge and spend a whole camp with her.   You won’t regret it.   In our next podcast, Catherine will be back and we have our classic format:  What we learned from our knitting;  A brainy thing;  and Behind the Redwood Curtain where we live.     Looking forward to connecting with you then.

It's all about the socks this week. Clare and Kate return to discuss different methods for casting off top down socks as well as a brief overview of cast-offs for toe up socks. In Enablers' Corner, I announce a new, one-off collaboration between The Golden Skein and Edinburgh Yarn Festival. Based on the format of the Power of 3 Club, the Linne Foirthe (Firth of Forth) Club is a celebration of the Edinburgh Yarn Festival and the Scottish yarn scene. Edinburgh is home to an array of wonderful designers, dyers and yarn shops and the photo draws its inspiration from the iconic Forth Bridge, which is 125 years old this year. The club is on sale on 15th February 2015 at 1900 GMT at The Golden Skein website. On the sock front, Kate and Clare discuss casting off, with Kitchener Stitch and cinching of the toes being the two main methods of casting off a top down sock. Clare loves Elizabeth Zimmerman's sewn bind off as her go-to for toe up socks. In the Agony Aunt section, Clare answers a question on using magic loop for two-at-a-time socks with a heelflap construction. Clare recommends a tutorial at knitbettersocks.com. Kate joins me in person to discuss how she has found her first month in the Sock Surgery and gives a precis of the Tarsi Grande pattern as well as the Hullabaloo yarn from The Golden Skein's winter 2014 club. Hello from a distinctly un-Springlike Cheshire Plain... brrr! On The Needles I've completed the waist decreases on Adrift, but I've decided to lengthen it and add some complimentary increases. Ravelry details of my project are here. I've also knit and crocheted some bunting triangles for the Guild's bunting, using the Sheepfold Clotted Cream I dyed a year ago.   Yesterday I cast on a Tomten by Elizabeth Zimmerman for a new arrival in the family.   Oh the Joy! No progress pictures, but I have spun some more purple BFL on the Traddy and more green merino/silk blend on the Joy. The Traddy's had a good scrub down and wax too. Baby Sweater on Two Needles and more EZ This show is sponsored by Quince & CO   www.quinceandco.com Thanks for the birthday wishes last week! Bereft by Robert Frost Baby Sweater on Two Needles by Elizabeth Zimmermann from Knitter’s Almanac.  It is better known as February Baby Sweater.   The February Lady Sweater (not by EZ) is actually more popular than the FBS. Projects on Ravelry: 6675 for Baby Sweater and 11,505 for FLS by Pamela Wynne. Knitter’s Almanac by Elizabeth Zimmerman.  February. Babies Things.  Have knitted everything in this chapter but the bonnet with the flap over the shoulders. Leggings.  I have made at least two pair.  Red and white striped ones were the cutest.  Not the most practical garment for modern moms. Blanket knitted from center out.  Have done it with lace and also in a heavier yarn with texture pattern and colorwork. Was told that pioneer woman put a cream or white border on blankets so Baby would perceive this is a boundary.  Per my experience, did not work. Double knitting blanket was a carriage blanket.  I used Schoolhouse Press Sheepsdown and my own handspun.  May have steeked and put a zipper in it.  Pete’s Socks…pulled off the colors! Handed Down Patterns. Topic started by nitiram.   Her Mother’s slipper/bootie pattern--she called pods.  Under “Some Things Never Change…”   In The Pipeline: EZ Saddle Shoulder Sweater     $14.99 Interweave knits Holiday Gifts.  Holiday 2011  Some of my favorites are McHenry by Susan B Anderson, Hollyberry Bonnet and Cape by Kyoko Nakyoshi, and Handwork Mitts by Julie Turjoman.  Recommended. High Note:Whole Wheat Cinnamon Rolls/Cinnamon Raisin Bread.  Used the Best Whole Wheat Bread Recipe from www.urbanhomemaker.com.  Divided dough in half.  One half for a loaf of bread and the other half made two pans of cinnamon rolls.  Streusel:  ½ c brown sugar and 2 tsp cinnamon.  I use Penzey’s.  Roll out dough.  Spread with softened or melted butter.  Sprinkle topping on and roll up.  For the rolls I reserved a few Tbs topping.  Took rolls out after 20 min.  Brushed tops with butter and sprinkled on the streusel.  Baked another 5 min. I read a letter from Elizabeth Zimmermann that was written to me in Jan 1980.  A photo of the letter is on the show blog.  www.knittingpipeline.com.  References to Moebius and her development of the concept. The musical selection today is The Moon of Wintertime by Lydia McCauley.      Knitting Pipeline Retreat March 2-3, 2012 Washington IL  61571 $50 for Fri night and Sat or $40 for just Sat Reserve your spot now!   Thanks for listening and supporting the show!
