Fr. Mike recalls the death of Lazarus, and how Jesus not only allowed himself to be broken by the sorrow that breaks us but also how he took that hopelessness and brought forth life. He also explains how the covenants we've seen in the Old Testament are all leading to the eternal covenant that will be instituted through Christ on the Cross. The readings for this homily: https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/032626.cfm"You will be my people, and I will be your God." This powerful declaration echoes down through the ages, defining the particular source  of God's renewed and redeemed relationship with humanity. It is a covenant of fidelity and everlasting love that the Lord enters into with each of us personally through the grace to have supernatural faith and through the Sacraments. Today, we reflect on this binding promise, starting with the saints honored in our liturgical calendar: Saint Margaret Clitherow, Saint Mathias and companions, and the martyrs of Alexandria. Though unknown to many, they were known perfectly to God, clinging to this covenant until their last breath.Covenant language is found in the story of Abraham, our father in faith. In the first reading, God changes Abram's name to Abraham, meaning “father of a multitude,” signaling a new identity and mission. This covenant was sealed through the terrifying test known as the akedah, the binding of Isaac. Abraham, willing to sacrifice his beloved son, demonstrated a faith that trusted God even when the fulfillment of the promise seemed impossible. He believed that God could raise the dead, a foreshadowing of the resurrection. This ancient binding finds its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ. In the Gospel of John, Jesus reveals His divine identity to the Jews, declaring, “Before Abraham came to be, I AM." He claims the divine name, asserting His unity with the Father. The Jews understood this claim as blasphemy and sought to stone Him, yet the Lord was simply telling the truth. Through the Incarnation, Jesus reveals the true nature of the covenant. Just as Abraham bound his son Isaac to the wood of the altar, so too did God the Father permit His only begotten Son to be nailed to the wood of the Cross. This time, the weapon was not withheld. The sacrifice was completed. God poured out the blood of His Son so that we might have eternal life. This is the final covenant, the New and Eternal Covenant established in Christ. It is not limited to a single nation but extends to every tribe, tongue, and nation. The Catholic Church is the kingdom of Heaven established through this covenantal love, where God binds Himself to us in the Eucharist. Every Mass is a renewal of this bond, where we consume the Body of Christ and become one with Him.The question remains: Do we remember this covenant? Do we recall the vows made at our baptism and confirmation? Sin is essentially forgetting this covenant and acting as though it does not exist, turning to idols instead of to the living God. When we stray, we are called to return to fidelity through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, renewing our love and recommitting to the binding promise. Like the many obscure saints who, though in Heaven, are not canonized or commemorated save on All Saints Day each year, we may not be famous, but if we remain faithful, we are known to God. ★ Support this podcast ★

WARS AND TERRITORY

WARS AND TERRITORY Throughout history, most wars have been fought over territory—taking it, defending it, or reclaiming it. When territory is won, a flag is planted, signalling a new political or ideological rule. But beneath the battles over territory there are always deeper forces at work—political power, culture, religion, and economic interests. Often the land is destroyed rather than possessed, yet the struggle for control continues. The growing tensions in the Middle East, particularly around Iran and involving many nations, could increasingly take on the appearance of a religious war with the banners of Islam and Judaism with Christianity somewhere in the middle. But in reality, the vast majority of people in these faiths do not want war. Religious wars are rarely about pure theology—they are usually about historical grievances, territorial identity, and political power. Jesus said he did not come to bring peace but a sword and his sword is exposing and testing every political power structure and religious identity.  Pray that Western powers operate with justice and integrity as well as force in the conflict and not end up facing a lose–lose situation. And as for religion the question becomes how will followers of Islam, Judaism, and Christianity live out their belief systems when those beliefs are tested THE CHRISTIAN BATTLEFIELD For Christians, the battle is not over geographical territory but many are becoming divisively contentious over this. Christianity does not seek to control land. It seeks to win the territory of the human heart. My question is What is the real territorial battle of God's people today? Our struggle is not against people or nations. Our battle is against territorial spiritual principalities and powers of darkness that influence the hearts and minds of humanity in every culture and society. (Ephesians 6:12) Paul said that we all once followed the prince of the power of the air…but now we have been made alive in Christ (Ephesians 2) Our real conflict is a spiritual battle for the human heart. IN OUR DISCUSSION GROUPS re THE CHURCH AT EPHESUS Paul saw something powerful happening in that church. He thanked God for two things: Their faith and love for one another in Christ. For Paul, these two signs meant that believers were participating in the life of Jesus. When the gospel came to Ephesus something dramatic happened. Acts 19:18 After Paul preached in Ephesus God performed extraordinary miracles through him and many who practiced sorcery confessed their sins, gathered their expensive magic books/scrolls, and burned them publicly and the value of these books was estimated at 50,000 pieces of silver. (twenty million dollars today) The Spiritual territory had changed hands.   ISRAEL AND THE LAND OF PROMISE The Bible makes it clear in 2 Thessalonians and in the Book of Revelation that Israel will be occupying Jerusalem in the final battle of Armageddon when the corrupt lawless world leaders oppose the victorious return of Jesus territorially in Jerusalem. But as to what happens between now and then and despite the myriads of prophetic Scriptures, we will have to wait and see. And in the Old Testament God did promise actual land to Israel. The promise began with Abraham. God said: “To your offspring I will give this land.” (Genesis 12:7- 13:14).   Later the promise to Abraham expanded and the boundaries were defined.  ‘To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates.' Genesis 15:18.  Then came ‘boots on the ground' territorial warfare. Under Moses God rold Israel not to worship the idols of the surrounding nations. Deuteronomy 9:4–5 It is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is driving them out before you.” This was not Israel's superiority, but God's judgment on idolatry and injustice.  Eventually the promise was fulfilled. Scripture records: Joshua 21:43–45: Thus the Lord gave to Israel all the land that he swore to give to their fathers. And they took possession of it, and they settled there. And the Lord gave them rest on every side… Not one word of all the good promises that the Lord had made to the house of Israel had failed; all came to pass.” The land became the place where Israel lived out Old Covenant life with God. But the New Covenant life relationship with God is no longer tied to geographical territory but to territory of the human heart. The Bible tells us that the old covenant has become obsolete.  Hebrews 8:13 In speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete A WORD ABOUT ISLAM Islam does not appear to have the same strict covenant structure of land occupancy found in the Bible as in Judaism. And I do not understand Islamic covenant structure fully, even though I have studied it and corresponded with Muslims on my teaching. They have responded to my recent podcast on the Mystery of Christ and the religious Muslims I have had contact with are of the spiritually devotional sect of Sufism who practice and teach on finding inner peace. Thay have treated me with kindness and are eager to maintain dialogue. (Write to me if you want details). I pray that the Spirit of God touches their hearts and peoples' hearts everywhere, because the truth that Jesus brings is for everyone. THE MYSTERY OF ISRAEL The New Testament describes Israel as a mystery. Romans 11:25 For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles (nations) has come in. And then all Israel will be saved, as it is written: “The Deliverer will come out of Zion, And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob. For this is My covenant with them, When I take away their sins. Concerning the gospel, they are hostile with regard to you but concerning my calling upon them they are beloved for the sake of the fathers. Paul uses several images: Religious Israel as an olive tree and national Israel as the fig tree Spiritual Israel as Christ the true vine with Christian believers as the branches. God's covenant purposes all ultimately converge in Christ in the New or Eternal Covenant which transcends time or territory. The promise to Abraham ultimately expanded far beyond the land of Canaan. Jesus revealed this in the Sermon on the Mount: (Mattthew 5) “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.” He was talking about the Kingdom promise of our inheritance in Christ through faith - his Kingdom world to come, which was not of this world. Paul says in Romans 4:13 For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith.” And more than that - What began as a promise about land becomes a promise about a whole Renewed Creation (Romans 8:21). Peter writes of a new heaven and a new earth where righteousness dwells. (2 Peter 3:13) Revelation also speaks of the new heaven and a new earth. ABRAHAM THE PILGRIM Interestingly, Abraham himself never possessed the territorial land of Israel. Stephen when he was being martyred in front of Paul said Abraham did not even own a foot of ground. (Acts 7:5) He lived there as a sojourner. Why? Because Abraham was looking beyond the land to something greater, and Paul then wrote about Abraham that he was looking for a city whose builder and maker is God. He desired a better country—a heavenly one. Hebrews 11:9–10 By faith Abraham went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land…For he looked forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God…They desired a better country, that is, a heavenly one.”  The promise was always bigger than Canaan and the Middle East. Abraham became a pattern of faith - living as a pilgrim, trusting in a spiritual but tangible inheritance - and looking beyond immediate possession. THE REAL TERRITORY When Paul thanked the Ephesian believers for their faith and love, he recognized that the flag of God's New Creation Territory had already been planted in their hearts and they were conquering that territory in the hearts of the people in Ephesus, and they were winning. This how we measure up as Christians in the world, no matter what the turmoil and confusion of the world's values and power struggles impose upon us.  Our identity is not defined by political systems, national borders, or religious conflicts. It is defined by participation in the life of Christ. We may see religion fighting against religion in the days ahead, but religion alone doesn't have Godly power without the centrality of Christ. It may have political and commercial and territorial power, but it fails the need of the human heart to have love and faith and power in the Holy Spirit. War is about territory and Jesus has won the decisive war against darkness to gain the territory of the human heart. Onward Christian soldiers. Paul OSullivan  pauloss@icloud.com

Read OnlineJesus said to his disciples: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place.” Matthew 5:17–18For many, the Old Testament can be confusing, filled with laws, rituals, and prophecies that seem difficult to connect with the New Testament. Yet, Jesus' words remind us that the Old Testament is not merely a relic of the past but an essential part of God's divine plan. Furthermore, every law, prophecy, and detail, down to “the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter,” finds its deepest meaning and completion in Christ. In a simplified way, the “Law and the Prophets” in the Old Testament can be summarized as moral laws, ceremonial laws, and prophetic teaching. The moral laws reflect God's eternal truths of right and wrong, the ceremonial laws govern Israel's worship and rituals, and the prophetic teaching calls the people to repentance, pointing to the coming Messiah. Together, these form the foundation of the Old Covenant, which is fulfilled in Christ, Who established the New and Eternal Covenant. Additionally, the Psalms and Wisdom literature enrich the Law and the Prophets, offering inspired prayers, meditations on God's faithfulness, and practical guidance for virtuous living.Though it might be an arduous task to read through the entire Old Testament, those who do so with understanding discover the truth that everything finds its fulfillment in Christ. “Fulfillment” does not mean that Jesus altered or discarded the Old Testament; rather, He revealed its true and hidden meaning, bringing it to perfection. What the Old Testament could only foreshadow, Jesus accomplished, achieving the fullness of God's plan.By analogy, consider an artist's sketch that depicts a beautiful mountain range and sunset. The Old Testament is like that sketch—it provides the framework, details, and foreshadowing of something greater. In Christ, the sketch is brought to life, becoming reality through God's creative act. While the sketch and the actual mountain range are the same scene, the reality is the perfect and complete expression of what the sketch anticipated. God, as the Divine Artist, first “sketched” what would come to be through the Law, Prophets, and Wisdom literature, and then brought it to fulfillment through Jesus' Incarnation, Life, Death, and Resurrection. In today's Gospel, after declaring that He came to fulfill the Law and the Prophets, Jesus provided three examples of how He brings the Old Testament moral law to its fulfillment. The commandment “You shall not kill” is deepened to include the interior sin of anger; “You shall not commit adultery” is expanded to include lust in the heart; and “Do not take a false oath” is elevated to a call for sincerity, honesty, and integrity in all one says and does. The Messiah then pours forth His grace, enabling the faithful to live in accord with this high calling.Though not included in today's Gospel, Jesus also brings the ceremonial laws to fulfillment by becoming the Lamb of God, offering Himself as the definitive High Priest on the new altar of the Cross. Furthermore, our Lord fulfills the prophets by establishing the New Covenant in His blood, as seen in Isaiah's vision of the Suffering Servant Who bears the sins of many (Isaiah 53), Jeremiah's promise of the new covenant written on hearts (Jeremiah 31:31–34), and Micah's prophecy of a ruler born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2).Reflect today on God's Eternal Law, established before the foundation of the world and brought to fulfillment in Christ. The human life of the Son of God is the center of time and eternity. Everything converges on Him, and new life flows from Him. Just as our Lord fulfills the Old Testament, He also is the only source of true fulfillment in our lives. Ponder His mission and renew your choice to accept His New Covenant, written on your heart by grace. Doing so is an exercise in Divine Wisdom, giving you a share in the new life of grace, made possible by His blood.Glorious Lawgiver and Messiah, Your Wisdom is perfect, eternal, and transforming. All things came to be through You and find their fulfillment in You. I thank You for the gift of Your Eternal Law and pray for the grace to live it to perfection, with the aid of Your saving grace. They shall fear and tremble because of all the good and all the prosperity I provide for it. 10 “Thus says the LORD: In this place of which you say, ‘It is a waste without man or beast,' in the cities of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem that are desolate, without man or inhabitant or beast, there shall be heard again 11 the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the voices of those who sing, as they bring thank offerings to the house of the LORD:   “‘Give thanks to the LORD of hosts,    for the LORD is good,    for his steadfast love endures forever!' For I will restore the fortunes of the land as at first, says the LORD. 12 “Thus says the LORD of hosts: In this place that is waste, without man or beast, and in all of its cities, there shall again be habitations of shepherds resting their flocks. 13 In the cities of the hill country, in the cities of the Shephelah, and in the cities of the Negeb, in the land of Benjamin, the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, flocks shall again pass under the hands of the one who counts them, says the LORD. Welcome to Day 2720 of Wisdom-Trek. Thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Day 2720 – Wisdom Nuggets – Psalm 89:1-8 – Daily Wisdom Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2720 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2720 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. The Title for Today's Wisdom-Trek is: The Eternal Song of God's Unfailing Love - A Trek Through Psalm Eighty Nine 1-8 Today, we begin a new, pivotal, and magnificent chapter in our journey through the Psalms: Psalm Eighty-Nine. We are covering its opening, foundational verses 1 through 8, in the New Living Translation. This psalm is a Maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite. Ethan, like Heman from the deeply sorrowful Psalm Eighty-Eight we just concluded, was one of the wise men and musicians of Solomon's time. Yet, where Psalm 88 ended in the absolute darkness of suffering and silence, Psalm Eighty-nine explodes with a powerful, unrelenting declaration of faith in God's two greatest attributes: His Unfailing Love and His Faithfulness. This psalm is the theological answer to Heman's despair! It essentially says, "Even when I feel consumed by darkness, even when God's fury seems heavy upon me, I will still sing of His steadfast love!" Psalm 89 is a grand meditation on the Davidic Covenant, a promise from God that established David's throne forever. The opening verses are a magnificent hymn, celebrating the God whose word is established in the heavens and whose power is unrivaled, even in the Divine Council. So, let's allow this hymn of divine promise to lift our hearts and anchor our hope in the unwavering character of the Most High God. The first section is: The Eternal Covenant of Love and Faithfulness (Psalm Eighty-Nine 1-4) I will sing of the Lord's unfailing love forever! Young and old will hear of your faithfulness. Your unfailing love will last forever; your faithfulness is as enduring as the heavens. The Lord said, "I have made a covenant with my chosen servant; I have solemnly promised David: ‘I will secure your throne among your descendants forever; I will make your dynasty last as long as the skies!'" Interlude The psalm opens with an immediate, resolute, and eternal commitment to praise: "I will sing of the Lord's unfailing love forever!" This is a personal vow, made by the psalmist, that will last for all time. The focus is squarely on God's "unfailing love" (ḥesed), that steadfast, covenant loyalty we've discussed so many times. It is the core quality of God's character that guarantees His adherence to His promises. The declaration to sing of it "forever" contrasts starkly with the finite life and suffering Heman described in the last psalm. Here, the emphasis is on the infinite nature of God's...

What if the Bible's story didn't start in Genesis, but in eternity past? Discover the eternal covenant between Father and Son that shapes all of Scripture and salvation history. In this episode of Remnant Radio, Joshua Lewis sits down with Dr. Ryan McGraw, professor of systematic theology at Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, to unpack the powerful doctrine of Covenant Theology. But this isn't just about ancient agreements—it's about the eternal plan of salvation crafted before time began. Dr. McGraw lays out the “covenant of redemption,” the intra-Trinitarian agreement between the Father and the Son to redeem a people through the perfect obedience and atoning death of Christ. This covenant provides the foundation for everything that unfolds in redemptive history—from Adam's failure under the covenant of works, to the unfolding covenant of grace that culminates in Christ and continues through the Church.Together, they trace the storyline of Scripture from Genesis to Revelation, showing how the theme of covenant brings coherence and clarity to God's dealings with His people. You'll hear how the law reveals not just commands, but the very character of God; how the gospel is embedded even in the earliest pages of the Old Testament; and how the biblical distinction between the seed of the woman and the seed of the serpent runs throughout all redemptive history. Whether you're new to covenant theology or looking to deepen your theological roots, this episode will help you see that the Bible is not a disjointed anthology—but a breathtaking, unified narrative of God's eternal purpose in Christ. ABOUT THE GUEST:

The Conquering Truth
Covenant Theology: Baptists' Discovery vs Presbyterians' Administration

The Conquering Truth

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 21, 2025 73:35

One of the biggest disagreements between Baptists and Presbyterians is related to baptism, it's administration and what it means within the church. And these differences in practice are tied directly to differences in how God's Covenant and the covenants that He has made with men are understood. One primary difference that we want to concentrate on is that the Baptist view has more of an upward focus, looking at how each of God's covenants with man reveals or discovers the Eternal Covenant of Grace whereas the Presbyterian view is more downward focused with their description being that the Covenant of Grace has different administrations in the time of the law and the time of the gospel. Because of these different focuses, Baptists and Presbyterians see the effect of continuity and discontinuity very differently, with Baptists looking for those details to be expressed in physical vs spiritual typologies expressed as the earthly covenants with man reveal the heavenly Covenant of Grace (for example: circumcision of the flesh being fulfilled through circumcision of the heart, physical offspring pointing to spiritual offspring, physical households pointing to spiritual households, etc). Alternately, Presbyterians look for continuity and discontinuity within the earthly covenants. In the Westminster, this chapter is titled, “Of God's Covenant with Man” and in the SLBC it is titled, “Of God's Covenant”Note: While we are focusing on real differences that we believe affect the church and doctrine in real ways, we are also grateful for the many areas of agreement that exist within the larger body of Christ. We also believe that it is through wrestling with God's word and doctrine with the guidance of the Holy Spirit that greater unity will come.Listen to the audio version here: https://theconqueringtruth.com/2025/04/covenant-theology-baptists-discovery-vs-presbyterians-administration-ep-215-audio/Timecodes00:00:00 Confessional Differences00:12:51 Purpose of Sacrificial System00:20:58 Abrahamic Covenant00:32:53 Sacrificial System00:52:53 What the Covenants RevealProduction of Reformation Baptist Church of Youngsville, NCPermanent Hosts - Dan Horn, Charles Churchill and Joshua HornTechnical Director - Timothy KaiserTheme Music - Gabriel Hudelson

Covenant Theology: Baptists' Discovery vs Presbyterians' Administration

(physical households continuing, circumcision becoming baptism, etc). Most of the differences in this episode are found in Chapter 7 of both the Westminter and the Second London Baptist confessions of faith. As Abraham gazed up at the stars, He was assured by God that what God has said to Abraham would indeed come to pass.  Abraham "put his faith in the Lord who attributed it to him as an act of righteousness." (Gen 15:6)  In the Transfiguration on Mt. Tabor, Jesus gives beautiful glimpse of the life of holiness that all who put thier faith in Him are to receive in the New and Eternal Covenant...

In Week 8, we will explore the eternal covenant made with the Jewish people and how, according to Romans 11:17, Christians are grafted into this covenant without replacing the Jewish people in God's plan. We will expose "Replacement Theology" as a dangerous heresy and emphasize that Christians are bound to the Jewish people as younger brothers to the covenant made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It is our duty to stand with the Jewish people and support the land promised to them in the everlasting covenant. Any form of antisemitism is a direct opposition to God Himself, and as believers, we must reject it unequivocally.

In a heart-to-heart discussion, I reveal how the love of Jesus and the grace of God have been my lifelines, offering a fresh start with each new sunrise. It's a candid exploration of faith—why it's challenging, how it's strengthened, and the transformative power of holding onto belief even when the ground beneath you feels shaky. We'll navigate how repetitive faith-building acts can fortify our spiritual muscles, allowing us to rise above doubts and fears, and how God's unwavering faithfulness is a constant source of hope, regardless of the changing tides of our lives. Then, I take a deep look at the everlasting assurances found within God's covenant, a theme that resounds through the sacred text and anchors our souls. I unpack the profound realization that God's love and faithfulness aren't just responses to our prayers, but a steadfast sanctum always available to those who revere and trust in God. This episode is for anyone in need of a reminder that trust and triumph are rooted in the unshakeable promise of God's commitment to us. Hebrews 9:15-28 15 Therefore He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant. 16 For where a will is involved, the death of the one who made it must be established. 17 For a will takes effect only at death, since it is not in force as long as the one who made it is alive. 18 Therefore not even the first covenant was inaugurated without blood. 19 For when every commandment of the law had been declared by Moses to all the people, he took the blood of calves and goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, 20 saying, “This is the blood of the covenant that God commanded for you.” 21 And in the same way he sprinkled with the blood both the tent and all the vessels used in worship. 22 Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. 23 Thus it was necessary for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these rites, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. 25 Nor was it to offer Himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters the holy places every year with blood not His own, 26 for then He would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, He has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. 27 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,28 so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for Him. Key Words: Will, Death, Blood, Covenant, Purify, Forgiveness, Once Keystone Verse: Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. Old Testament: Jeremiah 33–34 Jeremiah 33–34 (Listen) The Lord Promises Peace 33 The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah a second time, while he was still shut up in the court of the guard: 2 “Thus says the LORD who made the earth,1 the LORD who formed it to establish it—the LORD is his name: 3 Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known. 4 For thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning the houses of this city and the houses of the kings of Judah that were torn down to make a defense against the siege mounds and against the sword: 5 They are coming in to fight against the Chaldeans and to fill them2 with the dead bodies of men whom I shall strike down in my anger and my wrath, for I have hidden my face from this city because of all their evil. 6 Behold, I will bring to it health and healing, and I will heal them and reveal to them abundance of prosperity and security. 7 I will restore the fortunes of Judah and the fortunes of Israel, and rebuild them as they were at first. 8 I will cleanse them from all the guilt of their sin against me, and I will forgive all the guilt of their sin and rebellion against me. 9 And this city3 shall be to me a name of joy, a praise and a glory before all the nations of the earth who shall hear of all the good that I do for them. The Lord's Eternal Covenant with David 14 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 15 In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David, and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 16 In those days Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will dwell securely. And this is the name by which it will be called: ‘The LORD is our righteousness.' 17 “For thus says the LORD: David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel, 18 and the Levitical priests shall never lack a man in my presence to offer burnt offerings, to burn grain offerings, and to make sacrifices forever.” 19 The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah: 20 “Thus says the LORD: If you can break my covenant with the day and my covenant with the night, so that day and night will not come at their appointed time, 21 then also my covenant with David my servant may be broken, so that he shall not have a son to reign on his throne, and my covenant with the Levitical priests my ministers. 22 As the host of heaven cannot be numbered and the sands of the sea cannot be measured, so I will multiply the offspring of David my servant, and the Levitical priests who minister to me.” 23 The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah: 24 “Have you not observed that these people are saying, ‘The LORD has rejected the two clans that he chose'? Thus they have despised my people so that they are no longer a nation in their sight. 25 Thus says the LORD: If I have not established my covenant with day and night and the fixed order of heaven and earth, 26 then I will reject the offspring of Jacob and David my servant and will not choose one of his offspring to rule over the offspring of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. For I will restore their fortunes and will have mercy on them.” Zedekiah to Die in Babylon 34 The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army and all the kingdoms of the earth under his dominion and all the peoples were fighting against Jerusalem and all of its cities: 2 “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Go and speak to Zedekiah king of Judah and say to him, ‘Thus says the LORD: Behold, I am giving this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire. 3 You shall not escape from his hand but shall surely be captured and delivered into his hand. You shall see the king of Babylon eye to eye and speak with him face to face. And you shall go to Babylon.' 4 Yet hear the word of the LORD, O Zedekiah king of Judah! Thus says the LORD concerning you: ‘You shall not die by the sword. 5 You shall die in peace. And as spices were burned for your fathers, the former kings who were before you, so people shall burn spices for you and lament for you, saying, “Alas, lord!”' For I have spoken the word, declares the LORD.” 6 Then Jeremiah the prophet spoke all these words to Zedekiah king of Judah, in Jerusalem, 7 when the army of the king of Babylon was fighting against Jerusalem and against all the cities of Judah that were left, Lachish and Azekah, for these were the only fortified cities of Judah that remained. 8 The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, after King Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people in Jerusalem to make a proclamation of liberty to them, 9 that everyone should set free his Hebrew slaves, male and female, so that no one should enslave a Jew, his brother. 10 And they obeyed, all the officials and all the people who had entered into the covenant that everyone would set free his slave, male or female, so that they would not be enslaved again. They obeyed and set them free. 11 But afterward they turned around and took back the male and female slaves they had set free, and brought them into subjection as slaves. 12 The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah from the LORD: 13 “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: I myself made a covenant with your fathers when I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, saying, 14 ‘At the end of seven years each of you must set free the fellow Hebrew who has been sold to you and has served you six years; you must set him free from your service.' But your fathers did not listen to me or incline their ears to me. 15 You recently repented and did what was right in my eyes by proclaiming liberty, each to his neighbor, and you made a covenant before me in the house that is called by my name, 16 but then you turned around and profaned my name when each of you took back his male and female slaves, whom you had set free according to their desire, and you brought them into subjection to be your slaves. 17 “Therefore, thus says the LORD: You have not obeyed me by proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother and to his neighbor; behold, I proclaim to you liberty to the sword, to pestilence, and to famine, declares the LORD. I will make you a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth. 18 And the men who transgressed my covenant and did not keep the terms of the covenant that they made before me, I will make them like4 the calf that they cut in two and passed between its parts—19 the officials of Judah, the officials of Jerusalem, the eunuchs, the priests, and all the people of the land who passed between the parts of the calf. 20 And I will give them into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those who seek their lives. Their dead bodies shall be food for the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth. 21 And Zedekiah king of Judah and his officials I will give into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those who seek their lives, into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon which has withdrawn from you. 22 Behold, I will command, declares the LORD, and will bring them back to this city. And they will fight against it and take it and burn it with fire. I will make the cities of Judah a desolation without inhabitant.” Footnotes [1] 33:2 Septuagint; Hebrew it [2] 33:5 That is, the torn-down houses [3] 33:9 Hebrew And it [4] 34:18 Hebrew lacks them like (ESV) Psalm: Psalm 115 Psalm 115 (Listen) To Your Name Give Glory 115   Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name give glory,    for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness! 2   Why should the nations say,    “Where is their God?”3   Our God is in the heavens;    he does all that he pleases. 4   Their idols are silver and gold,    the work of human hands.5   They have mouths, but do not speak;    eyes, but do not see.6   They have ears, but do not hear;    noses, but do not smell.7   They have hands, but do not feel;    feet, but do not walk;    and they do not make a sound in their throat.8   Those who make them become like them;    so do all who trust in them. 9   O Israel,1 trust in the LORD!    He is their help and their shield.10   O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD!    He is their help and their shield.11   You who fear the LORD, trust in the LORD!    He is their help and their shield. 12   The LORD has remembered us; he will bless us;    he will bless the house of Israel;    he will bless the house of Aaron;13   he will bless those who fear the LORD,    both the small and the great. 14   May the LORD give you increase,    you and your children!15   May you be blessed by the LORD,    who made heaven and earth! 16   The heavens are the LORD's heavens,    but the earth he has given to the children of man.17   The dead do not praise the LORD,    nor do any who go down into silence.18   But we will bless the LORD    from this time forth and forevermore.  Praise the LORD! Footnotes [1] 115:9 Masoretic Text; many Hebrew manuscripts, Septuagint, Syriac O house of Israel (ESV) New Testament: 1 Corinthians 8–9 1 Corinthians 8–9 (Listen) Food Offered to Idols 8 Now concerning1 food offered to idols: we know that “all of us possess knowledge.” This “knowledge” puffs up, but love builds up. 2 If anyone imagines that he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know. 3 But if anyone loves God, he is known by God.2 4 Therefore, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that “an idol has no real existence,” and that “there is no God but one.” 5 For although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth—as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”—6 yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist. 7 However, not all possess this knowledge. But some, through former association with idols, eat food as really offered to an idol, and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. 8 Food will not commend us to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. 9 But take care that this right of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. 10 For if anyone sees you who have knowledge eating3 in an idol's temple, will he not be encouraged,4 if his conscience is weak, to eat food offered to idols? 11 And so by your knowledge this weak person is destroyed, the brother for whom Christ died. 12 Thus, sinning against your brothers5 and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. 13 Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble. Paul Surrenders His Rights 9 Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are not you my workmanship in the Lord? 2 If to others I am not an apostle, at least I am to you, for you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. 3 This is my defense to those who would examine me. 4 Do we not have the right to eat and drink? 5 Do we not have the right to take along a believing wife,6 as do the other apostles and the brothers of the Lord and Cephas? 6 Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no right to refrain from working for a living? 7 Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard without eating any of its fruit? Or who tends a flock without getting some of the milk? 8 Do I say these things on human authority? Does not the Law say the same? 9 For it is written in the Law of Moses, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain.” Is it for oxen that God is concerned? 10 Does he not certainly speak for our sake? It was written for our sake, because the plowman should plow in hope and the thresher thresh in hope of sharing in the crop. 11 If we have sown spiritual things among you, is it too much if we reap material things from you? 12 If others share this rightful claim on you, do not we even more? Nevertheless, we have not made use of this right, but we endure anything rather than put an obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ. 13 Do you not know that those who are employed in the temple service get their food from the temple, and those who serve at the altar share in the sacrificial offerings? 14 In the same way, the Lord commanded that those who proclaim the gospel should get their living by the gospel. 15 But I have made no use of any of these rights, nor am I writing these things to secure any such provision. For I would rather die than have anyone deprive me of my ground for boasting. 16 For if I preach the gospel, that gives me no ground for boasting. For necessity is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! 17 For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward, but if not of my own will, I am still entrusted with a stewardship. 18 What then is my reward? That in my preaching I may present the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my right in the gospel. 19 For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them. 20 To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law. 21 To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. 23 I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings. 24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. 25 Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. 26 So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. 27 But I discipline my body and keep it under control,7 lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified. Old Testament: Isaiah 52–55 Isaiah 52–55 (Listen) The Lord's Coming Salvation 52   Awake, awake,    put on your strength, O Zion;  put on your beautiful garments,    O Jerusalem, the holy city;  for there shall no more come into you    the uncircumcised and the unclean.2   Shake yourself from the dust and arise;    be seated, O Jerusalem;  loose the bonds from your neck,    O captive daughter of Zion. 3 For thus says the LORD: “You were sold for nothing, and you shall be redeemed without money.” 4 For thus says the Lord GOD: “My people went down at the first into Egypt to sojourn there, and the Assyrian oppressed them for nothing.1 5 Now therefore what have I here,” declares the LORD, “seeing that my people are taken away for nothing? Their rulers wail,” declares the LORD, “and continually all the day my name is despised. 6 Therefore my people shall know my name. Therefore in that day they shall know that it is I who speak; here I am.” 7   How beautiful upon the mountains    are the feet of him who brings good news,  who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness,    who publishes salvation,    who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.”8   The voice of your watchmen—they lift up their voice;    together they sing for joy;  for eye to eye they see    the return of the LORD to Zion.9   Break forth together into singing,    you waste places of Jerusalem,  for the LORD has comforted his people;    he has redeemed Jerusalem.10   The LORD has bared his holy arm    before the eyes of all the nations,  and all the ends of the earth shall see    the salvation of our God. 11   Depart, depart, go out from there;    touch no unclean thing;  go out from the midst of her; purify yourselves,    you who bear the vessels of the LORD.12   For you shall not go out in haste,    and you shall not go in flight,  for the LORD will go before you,    and the God of Israel will be your rear guard. He Was Pierced for Our Transgressions 13   Behold, my servant shall act wisely;2    he shall be high and lifted up,    and shall be exalted.14   As many were astonished at you—    his appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance,    and his form beyond that of the children of mankind—15   so shall he sprinkle3 many nations.    Kings shall shut their mouths because of him,  for that which has not been told them they see,    and that which they have not heard they understand.53   Who has believed what he has heard from us?4    And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?2   For he grew up before him like a young plant,    and like a root out of dry ground;  he had no form or majesty that we should look at him,    and no beauty that we should desire him.3   He was despised and rejected5 by men,    a man of sorrows6 and acquainted with7 grief;8  and as one from whom men hide their faces9    he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4   Surely he has borne our griefs    and carried our sorrows;  yet we esteemed him stricken,    smitten by God, and afflicted.5   But he was pierced for our transgressions;    he was crushed for our iniquities;  upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,    and with his wounds we are healed.6   All we like sheep have gone astray;    we have turned—every one—to his own way;  and the LORD has laid on him    the iniquity of us all. 7   He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,    yet he opened not his mouth;  like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,    and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,    so he opened not his mouth.8   By oppression and judgment he was taken away;    and as for his generation, who considered  that he was cut off out of the land of the living,    stricken for the transgression of my people?9   And they made his grave with the wicked    and with a rich man in his death,  although he had done no violence,    and there was no deceit in his mouth. 10   Yet it was the will of the LORD to crush him;    he has put him to grief;10  when his soul makes11 an offering for guilt,    he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days;  the will of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.11   Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see12 and be satisfied;  by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant,    make many to be accounted righteous,    and he shall bear their iniquities.12   Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many,13    and he shall divide the spoil with the strong,14  because he poured out his soul to death    and was numbered with the transgressors;  yet he bore the sin of many,    and makes intercession for the transgressors. The Eternal Covenant of Peace 54   “Sing, O barren one, who did not bear;    break forth into singing and cry aloud,    you who have not been in labor!  For the children of the desolate one will be more    than the children of her who is married,” says the LORD.2   “Enlarge the place of your tent,    and let the curtains of your habitations be stretched out;  do not hold back; lengthen your cords    and strengthen your stakes.3   For you will spread abroad to the right and to the left,    and your offspring will possess the nations    and will people the desolate cities. 4   “Fear not, for you will not be ashamed;    be not confounded, for you will not be disgraced;  for you will forget the shame of your youth,    and the reproach of your widowhood you will remember no more.5   For your Maker is your husband,    the LORD of hosts is his name;  and the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer,    the God of the whole earth he is called.6   For the LORD has called you    like a wife deserted and grieved in spirit,  like a wife of youth when she is cast off,    says your God.7   For a brief moment I deserted you,    but with great compassion I will gather you.8   In overflowing anger for a moment    I hid my face from you,  but with everlasting love I will have compassion on you,”    says the LORD, your Redeemer. 9   “This is like the days of Noah15 to me:    as I swore that the waters of Noah    should no more go over the earth,  so I have sworn that I will not be angry with you,    and will not rebuke you.10   For the mountains may depart    and the hills be removed,  but my steadfast love shall not depart from you,    and my covenant of peace shall not be removed,”    says the LORD, who has compassion on you. 11   “O afflicted one, storm-tossed and not comforted,    behold, I will set your stones in antimony,    and lay your foundations with sapphires.1612   I will make your pinnacles of agate,17    your gates of carbuncles,18    and all your wall of precious stones.13   All your children shall be taught by the LORD,    and great shall be the peace of your children.14   In righteousness you shall be established;    you shall be far from oppression, for you shall not fear;    and from terror, for it shall not come near you.15   If anyone stirs up strife,    it is not from me;  whoever stirs up strife with you    shall fall because of you.16   Behold, I have created the smith    who blows the fire of coals    and produces a weapon for its purpose.  I have also created the ravager to destroy;17     no weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed,    and you shall refute every tongue that rises against you in judgment.  This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD    and their vindication19 from me, declares the LORD.” The Compassion of the Lord 55   “Come, everyone who thirsts,    come to the waters;  and he who has no money,    come, buy and eat!  Come, buy wine and milk    without money and without price.2   Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,    and your labor for that which does not satisfy?  Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good,    and delight yourselves in rich food.3   Incline your ear, and come to me;    hear, that your soul may live;  and I will make with you an everlasting covenant,    my steadfast, sure love for David.4   Behold, I made him a witness to the peoples,    a leader and commander for the peoples.5   Behold, you shall call a nation that you do not know,    and a nation that did not know you shall run to you,  because of the LORD your God, and of the Holy One of Israel,    for he has glorified you. 6   “Seek the LORD while he may be found;    call upon him while he is near;7   let the wicked forsake his way,    and the unrighteous man his thoughts;  let him return to the LORD, that he may have compassion on him,    and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.8   For my thoughts are not your thoughts,    neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD.9   For as the heavens are higher than the earth,    so are my ways higher than your ways    and my thoughts than your thoughts. 10   “For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven    and do not return there but water the earth,  making it bring forth and sprout,    giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,11   so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;    it shall not return to me empty,  but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,    and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it. 12   “For you shall go out in joy    and be led forth in peace;  the mountains and the hills before you    shall break forth into singing,    and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.13   Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress;    instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle;  and it shall make a name for the LORD,    an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.” Footnotes [1] 52:4 Or the Assyrian has oppressed them of late [2] 52:13 Or shall prosper [3] 52:15 Or startle [4] 53:1 Or Who has believed what we have heard?
