This week's guest is a friend of the podcast, Dr Gail Bradbrook.  Best known for her role in co-founding Extinction Rebellion, Gail is one of our nation's (and our world's) deepest thinkers on radical change: what will it take to shift the juggernaut of predatory capitalism from the orgy of extraction, consumption and destruction that has brought us to the edge of crisis, and instead turn it towards a celebration of life in all its forms? Gail is also a leading beacon of practical activism - how can we bring the collective conversation to bear on the existential crises of our time? In our conversation, Gail honours the teachers that have helped her to find balance and insight, and to find practical, clear-eyed hope amidst all the potential for despair.  We go on to explore her work in BCAN (see below) and, particularly, to explore the nature of horizontal organising.  In a world where half the (western) population is wedded to the old hierarchical, patriarchal structures of top-down dominance, what happens in the other half when we experiment with other, less culturally familiar ways of being? Extinction Rebellion was one of the biggest, and most public expressions of horizontal organising in the modern contemporary world. A great deal of theory was put into practice and the results were often visible in newspaper headlines.  Recorded a mere handful of days after the 'We Quit" press release from XR, we look at some of the lessons learned, and how we might do things differently next time. BIO:Dr Gail Bradbrook has been researching, planning, and training for mass civil disobedience since 2010 and is a co-founder of Extinction Rebellion (XR). Since its launch in October 2018, XR has spread around the world so that now, there are more than 1150 XR groups in 75 countries. Gail has trained in molecular biophysics, and her talk on the science of the ecological crisis, the psychology of active participation, and the need for civil disobedience has gone viral and been inspired many to join XR. She is from Yorkshire, the mother of two boys, the daughter of a coal miner, and was named by GQ as one of the top 50 influencers in the UK, and honoured in the 2020 Women's Hour Power list for her part in instigating a rebellion against the British Government.More recently, she is one of the cofounders of the Be the Change Affinity Network of XR activists exploring ways to shift our cultural rigidity into something regenerative and distributive by design.  Gail is a genuine visionary leader - one of one of the deepest, most enlightened thinkers we know; living at the leading edge of change and exploring radical answers to the questions of our time. She's also deeply spiritual and emotionally thoughtful, and it's always an enormous joy to explore with her the big questions of our time: what are we here for and how can we shift the entire nature of our culture in practical ways? Extinction Rebellion drew attention to the climate crisis like no other group before them. Founded in just 2018, they’ve forced the climate conversation into the mainstream, and their organisation is an inspiring reminder of what citizens can achieve when mobilized. But what happens after the alarm has been raised? How do activist groups evolve their messaging and their mission to identify a new goal: solutions. That’s what Dr Gail Bradbrook joins me to discuss. Gail is one of the original members who set up Extinction Rebellion and has now transitioned to Being The Change which empowers both activist groups and members of the public to connect with one another around the world and do something. Gail also gives insight into where activism is going wrong in the West, from white saviour complex beliefs to inadequately connecting with the public. This is a fascinating discussion from someone who really knows these movements about where they’re going and what to do about it. Every day almost 8million pieces of plastic pollution find their way into the oceans. What can be done about it? In this episode of Being The Change, host Rohan Thakar is chatting with Santa Cruz, California based, Christian Shaw who is the Founder & Executive Director of PlasticTides, A Non-Profit Organisation that has been closely involved with research for plastic pollution in the oceans by collecting samples across the globe. Their flagship programme- GYM (Global Youth Mentor) Programme is aimed at encouraging the youth to take responsibility for creating a plastic-free future. Here, the students create their own programmes with help of mentors. The programmes can be activities to reduce pollution or research on plastic pollution and creating solutions. Christian says, removing plastic from the ocean is not the complete solution, but reducing the dependency on the single-use plastic is. Here are a few solutions: Instead of the single-use packaged water bottle, use a reusable water bottle. Instead of taking shopping bags from the shopkeepers, get your own bag. Avoid pre-packed foods, get fresh, seasonal & locally available foods. It's just the simple habits of each person that can bring a ton of change! How can today’s Youth face the uncertain world while staying true to their values? How can Youth lead by example, by “Being The Change”? What practices or inner cultivation help nurture resilience and conviction to operate from their natural self?   Join us as we explore these questions from the lens of Maitreyee Gehlot and Gaus Sayyad - two youths with fascinating journeys! Maitreyee, on one end is completing her degree in Psychology online from University of Chicago and on the other end working on creating a “Self-Learning / Homeschooling” platform in Indore, through Asmakan. Gaus grew up at an orphanage, called Maher Ashram, completed his education, got an MBA degree and has gone on to receive multiple awards for his service work!  Maitreyee was brought up in Minnesota, US and moved to India when she was about 15 years old. Until 8th she attended regular school and after that transitioned into 'homeschooling'. Soon after, along with her mother she co-founded Asmakam, a Self Led Open Learning Space where they facilitate self learning for teens and youth. Later, she decided to get a college degree and went to University of Chicago to pursue a degree in Psychology. After a year, she decided she wants to come back to India and serve her family and community through Asmakam and hence she is continuing her degree online. Passionate about cooking, she started a creative food tech startup, CutFoo, which focuses on connecting people through food - like an Airbnb version of restaurants! In her free time, she enjoys reading, cooking and listening to music.     Five Questions for Maitreyee _____________________________________________________________ · What Makes You Come Alive? Helping children and youth take charge of their own learning, cooking yummy and healthy meals for my loved ones and trying to pay forward all the kindness I’ve received! ·  Pivotal turning point in your life When I started my journey as a self-learner. I truly believe the path I took led me to becoming the independent, compassionate and open-minded individual I am today. ·  An Act of Kindness You'll Never Forget When a complete stranger genuinely listened to me and held my hand as I was going through a tough time. ·  One Thing On Your Bucket List Travelling the world! ·  One-line Message for the World Be kind. Not only to other’s but to yourself as well. _____________________________________________________________ Gaus Sayyad Born on the streets of Pune, Gaus' childhood story is like the millions born in urban poverty. Put to work at the raw age of 6 years to keep the home fires burning, Gaus took up odd jobs at a nearby garage, at a food stall, and such. And yet, his curiosity to learn was intense. Gaus would drop by into the classroom of a nearby school even though he was not formally admitted (3 Idiots style)! The happy ending of Gaus' story of the white school uniform shirt is legendary and sad at the same time, just to think of all those 5-year-olds who can't go to school as they do not have a proper uniform. Fate intervened with Sister Lucy Kurien taking Gaus to Maher Ashram. Gaus' stay at Maher nourished the child in him. He got to know what it feels to sit inside one (and not merely to clean cars). Gaus went on to graduate in Commerce and complete his MBA. Gaus has grown up to be a confident youth also stayed at Rashtrapati Bhavan for an award, among the many he has received! Gaus speaks regularly on various public fora – after two years at an IT company, he decided to rejoin Maher in a leadership role and now works as an ambassador for Maher and the children like him. Karan Shah will be the dialogue moderator. He is a recent graduate from Pennsylvania State University in Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics. He enjoys being outdoors in nature, trekking, and playing sports like basketball and football. He is one of the core volunteers behind Awakin Talks. At a young age, his commitment to volunteerism and self observation through Vipassana meditation is an inspiration to many who have seen him closely.

This week's "Your Weekly Dose of Higher Consciousness" episode is all about Mahatma Gandhi's quote, "Be the change you want to see in the world." What does "be the change you want to see in the world' really mean and how can we put it into context?Today I am here to help you understand what "being the change" means when you understand levels of consciousness from Dr. David R. Hawkins Map of Consciousness. If you want to "be the change" you have to stop looking outside of yourself to point fingers and blame. You have to be willing to:Step into courage, as it takes courage to change,Accept you are the creator of your own experience,Be honest with yourself, and Learn to cultivate compassion and understanding for lower levels of consciousness as played out by other people and the rest of the world.I introduce the level of consciousness of Mahatma Gandhi. His level of consciousness was 760 on the Map of Consciousness which is that of the level of the Mystic. According to consciousness calibrations, 700 is the level of the Mystic. The Mystic is a rare human being that channels Truth and Grace and is no longer susceptible to lower levels of consciousness and the ego. Other people and concepts that calibrate in the 700's is:Mother Teresa - 710Meister Eckhart- German sage & mystic - 705Universal Rights, human dignity & right for freedom - 700The Declaration of Independence - 705The US Constitution - 710It is a rare human being that calibrates at 600 or above on the Map of Consciousness, and at last calibration that I am aware of, there were only 12 people on the planet calibrating above 600!It's a significant gift to the human race to have individuals that calibrate above 600 on the planet, as they off-set or counterbalance the consciousness of millions of people under 200 on the map.I discuss the higher levels of consciousness, and how choosing to let go of lower levels of consciousness can raise your level of consciousness and actually "be the change you want to see in the world" because your level of consciousness counterbalances significant numbers of people (1,000's and millions) that calibrate below 200 on the Map of Consciousness. The higher your level of consciousness, the greater the ripple effect you have on the world and your ability to "be the change you want to see in the world."Per Wikipedia:Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (/ˈɡɑːndi, ˈɡændi/;[2] 2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948) was an Indian lawyer,[3] anti-colonial nationalist,[4] and political ethicist,[5] who employed nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India's independence from

Patterned after the New York Times’ Table for Three column, host Ellin Keene poses questions to authors and engages them in a reflective conversation. In this third Turn and Talk discussion, Ellin is joined by Linda Rief (most recently the author of The Quickwrite Handbook) and Sara Ahmed (author of Being the Change: lessons and strategies to teach social comprehension) as they share their stories of their teaching journeys, teacher autonomy, and student inquiry.

Today on the Heinemann Podcast, empathy…In Sara Ahmed’s book Being the Change, she writes about how empathy has become a buzzword and its practice tends to get lost under high achievement goalsAnd In their book Kids First from Day One, Christine Hertz and Kristi Mraz write:."You might think that being an empathetic teacher is just part of the gig, but in the heat of the moment and the stress of the job, it is easy to want kids to see it from our point of view rather than to see it from theirs. Yes, empathy is a feel-good idea, but there’s more to it than that.” In today’s podcast we’ve brought together authors Sarah Ahmed, Christine Hertz and Kristine Mraz, to discuss empathy not as something we have, but rather as an ongoing, daily practice that must be prioritized in our minds and actions. Our conversation begins with keeping empathy focused on the kids…
