This week, the guys recorded Indiecast a few days early, so they apologize in advance for missing any potential indie news. Steven was off to NYC for the film festival premiere of Yacht Rock: A Dockumentary — which he worked on as story producer — ahead of streaming on HBO/Max on November 29 (2:24). After a brief conversation about yacht rock, the guys talk about the exodus on social media to Bluesky and how the new-ish app feels like a Christian rock alternative to X/Twitter (10:09).Then they hash out an unfortunate trend: The end of Pitchfork Fest. They share memories of the festival and discuss how it was like a convention for music writers (17:57). From there, they review the recent Grammy nominations, some truly weird picks for Best New Artist, and some surprisingly good picks for Best Alternative Album (30:40). Finally, they discuss the meteoric rise of the indie-adjacent singer-songwriter Mk.gee and whether it annoys Alex G (43:00).In Recommendation Corner, Ian talks about the Chicago emo band Bottom Bracket and Steven recommends the LA post-punk quartet Bondo (53:52).New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. fWotD Episode 2484: Dookie Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Thursday, 22 February 2024 is Dookie.Dookie is the third studio album by the American rock band Green Day, released on February 1, 1994, by Reprise Records. The band's major label debut and first collaboration with producer Rob Cavallo, it was recorded in mid-1993 at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California. Written mostly by frontman and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, the album is heavily based around his personal experiences, with themes such as boredom, anxiety, relationships, and sexuality. The album was promoted with four singles: "Longview", "Basket Case", a re-recorded version of "Welcome to Paradise" (which originally appeared on the band's second studio album, 1991's Kerplunk), and "When I Come Around".After several years of grunge's dominance in popular music, Dookie brought a livelier, more melodic rock sound to the mainstream, and propelled Green Day to worldwide fame. Considered one of the defining albums of the 1990s and punk rock in general, it was also pivotal in solidifying the genre's mainstream popularity. Its influence permeated into the new millennium and beyond, being cited as an inspiration by many punk and pop-punk bands, as well as artists from other genres.Though the band was labeled a sell-out by some of their original fans for leaving their independent label, Lookout! Records and embracing a more polished sound, Dookie received critical acclaim upon its release. The record won a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Album in 1995. It was also a worldwide success, peaking at number two on the Billboard 200 in the United States and reaching top ten positions in several other countries. It was later certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and has sold over 20 million copies worldwide, making it the band's best-selling album and one of the best-selling albums worldwide. It has been labeled by critics and journalists as one of the greatest albums of the 1990s and one of the greatest punk rock and pop-punk albums of all time; Rolling Stone placed Dookie on three iterations of their "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list, and at number 1 on their "50 Greatest Pop-Punk Albums" list. In August 2023, it was announced that a 30th anniversary deluxe edition of the album would be released on September 29, 2023, featuring outtakes, demos, and two live concert recordings. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:01 UTC on Thursday, 22 February 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Dookie on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Matthew Standard.
I wanted to revisit an episode about one of my favorite songs from 2021, “Black Dog” by Arlo Parks. A few months after this episode originally came out, Arlo Parks won the Mercury Prize for Album of the Year. She was also nominated for two Grammys: Best New Artist and Best Alternative Album. Since then, she released a new album called My Soft Machine, and she's going to be on tour this spring. Arlo Parks is a singer and songwriter from London. In January 2021, she released her debut album, Collapsed in Sunbeams. It hit number three on the UK charts, and she won this year's BRIT award for Breakthrough Artist. Last year, NME called her song "Black Dog" the year's "most devastating song." In this episode, Anaïs breaks down “Black Dog," which she made with producer Gianluca Buccellati. Formed in 2012 by Peter Dreimanis and Leah Fay, Toronto's July Talk has spent the last ten years building up an incredible following based on an energetic live show and three stellar albums that won them the Juno award for Best Alternative Album. They have just released their fourth studio album, Remember Never Before, on Six Shooter Records. They are about to hit the road on a massive tour that begins with two shows at the legendary Massey Hall before crossing Canada and forging into the US! The two of them wax poetically about Leslie Feist's 2017 album Pleasure, an album that Leah and Peter would agree is almost perfection!
"Sonically good without the sonic soul is crap!" Michael talked about why it's the emotional stuff, not the technical stuff that makes a great mix, how to understand multi-bus mix compression, why plugins are fun, and mixing in Atmos on headphones. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Michael Brauer a Grammy-winning New York mix engineer. His many credits include "Best Pop Vocal Album" for John Mayer's Continuum, "Best Alternative Album" for Coldplay's Parachutes, and also "Best Rock Album" for Coldplay's "Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends". Other artists include The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Jeff Buckley, David Byrne, Paul McCartney, Ben Folds, KT Tunstall, and Martha Wainwright. He also invented the technique known as 'Brauerizing', in which mixes are routed through multiple compressors and busses to create a blended sound. And he is a co-founder of Mix With The Masters which has been running for over a decade. Michael has been a guest on the show previously to talk about his background in music and mixing so please chack out that episode at RSR300. And at that time he had relocated outside the heart of the city in NY to settle into his home studio for mixing. He also completed his journey of migrating his mix template over from a hybrid setup to a full “in the box” method with the help of his engineer Fernando Reyes. Michael created a fantastic course on Puremix.net called Brauerize ITB to teach his mixing setup so you can recreate the whole thing in your home studio if you choose. So I am excited to have Michael joining us to talk about his philosophy of mixing and the migration over to mixing “in the box”. Radiohead's stellar reputation is to a large degree based on the band's most famous albums, their third, OK Computer (1997) and their fourth, Kid A (2000), both of which won a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Album. Although Dookie is the third studio album by Green Day, it is their first release on a major label. This may explain some of their seemingly overnight stardom. The trio consisted of Billie Joe Armstrong on vocals and lead, Mike Dirnt on bass and backing vocals, and Tre Cool on percussion, and they had been in the underground scene in the San Francisco Bay area since before 1988 (Tre Cool replaced original drummer John Kiffmeyer in 1990). The band changed their original name from Sweet Baby to Green Day, a slang phrase for spending the day smoking cannabis. Dookie was recorded in three weeks, and was a major commercial success, helped along by extensive airplay of the band's videos on MTV. It was also a critical success, and the group won a Grammy for Best Alternative Album in 1995. Dookie remains Green Day's best selling album. The music is considered punk revivalist or "power punk", and you can see the influence of early punk groups like the Ramones and the Clash. However, the band has also cited bands like the Who and Cheap Trick as influences as well. Green Day is considered one of the groups that made punk go mainstream in the 1990's. Billie Joe Armstrong wrote most of the tracks on the album, following themes from his personal history including anxiety, sex, and even boredom. Consistent with the punk genre, most songs are quite short and very fast. LongviewThe first single off the album is about boredom and lack of motivation. It is about a day spent sitting around the house, doing nothing of importance. "I sit around and watch the tube, but nothing's on."SheA deeper cut, this track was released as the fifth and final single. The song is about Armstrong's former girlfriend who showed him a feminist poem with an identical title. Armstrong then wrote the lyrics of "She" and showed them to her, though she dumped him later on. The song is notorious for a concert where Armstrong performed the song nude.Welcome to ParadiseThe song was originally on their second album, but re-recorded for this album. The song is about a runaway who is living on the streets. Armstrong temporarily moved into a rat-infested warehouse in a bad neighborhood, but the rent was a low $50 per month. Much of his experience in that dump was the inspiration for this track. When I Come AroundThis was the fourth and biggest-selling single from the album, though more mellow than most. It is about Armstrong knowing a girlfriend is mad and wants to break up, and Armstrong deciding to just staying away from the drama until it blows over. He would go on to marry her in real life. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:All For Love by Bryan Adams, featuring Sting and Rod Stewart (from the motion picture "The Three Musketeers")Three musical stars team up to provide this theme for the motion picture "The Three Musketeers." STAFF PICKS:Spinning Around Over You by Lenny KravitzRob starts us with a groovy staff pick from Lenny Kravitz' third studio album. Kravitz was born in New York City to a TV producer dad and actress mom. His home was a mixture of black and white, Christian and Jewish. The family moved to L.A. when his Roxie Roker (his mom) landed a role in "The Jeffersons" Rock 'N' Roll Dreams Come Through by Meat LoafBruce's staff pick is the third single from the album "Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell." Jim Steinman wrote it and released it on his album "Bad for Good" in 1981. Both the Steinman version and the Meat Loaf version were top 40-hits, with Steinman's version going to number 32 and the Meat Loaf version going to number 13. It is a rock anthem about how rock and roll gets you through tough times.Having a Party by Rod StewartBrian brings us an unplugged cover from Sam Cook. Ronnie Wood (the Rolling Stones, Faces, the Jeff Beck group) is playing guitar on this track. Stewart sticks quite faithfully to the original, and he would continue to focus on a crooner style in his later days.Laid by JamesWayne finishes us off with the Manchester sound. The song is about a ruinous relationship that the guy just can't give up. "My therapist said not to see you no more. She said you're like a disease without any cure. She said I'm so obsessed that I'm becoming a bore, oh no!" INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Sabrosa by Beastie BoysWe finish off with a tasty, jazzy instrumental from the Beastie Boys. "Sabrosa" means "tasty" in Spanish.
Two years removed from his fourth album Assure Form, which earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Album, James Blake is back in action with his fifth full-length release, Friends That Break Your Heart. A rare blend of eloquent lyrical craft and explorative musicianship, the songs of Tiny Ruins have been treasured by crowds and critics for over a decade. Via an eclectic raft of influences, the musical world of Hollie Fullbrook and band spans delicate folk, lustrous dream pop and ebullient psychedelia. Born in Bristol and raised in West Auckland, songwriter & multi-instrumentalist Fullbrook's debut LP Some Were Meant For Sea (2011) features her alone, and was quickly celebrated by radio playlists and blogs worldwide. The album’s clutch of “gorgeous vignettes” (BBC) put the artist on the map, and she took to the road from her home in New Zealand to tour extensively through the UK, Europe and North America – often accompanied by her friend Cass Basil on bass. Following the tape-recorded EP Haunts (2013), produced by Jon Pearce (The Beths), and with the addition of drummer Alex Freer, the then-trio began work on second album Brightly Painted One with producer Tom Healy, who later joined the band on electric guitar. Brightly Painted One (2014) was championed by the New York Times, NPR and David Lynch, & won Best Alternative Album at the New Zealand Music Awards - “…an album of quiet, devastating beauty,” wrote Pop Matters. “...an album that both bruises the heart and lifts the soul...songwriting that demonstrates a novelist’s eye for detail.”— Uncut review of 'Brightly Painted One' In between touring, Fullbrook became a sought after collaborator. A New York recording session culminated in the EP Hurtling Through (2015) with indie-rock legend Hamish Kilgour (The Clean), while single Dream Wave (2016) was recorded and produced by award-winning cult filmmaker and musician David Lynch - “A tranquil, pared-back track [with] a gradually rising sense of the macabre… very special indeed.”— The Line of Best Fit Building on the sparse minimalism and intricate songwriting of earlier releases, the band’s third album Olympic Girls comprises a taut and agile quiver of songs, dancing with explorative instrumentation and a pop sensibility that springs with life. “How much would you be willing to give?” Fullbrook asks point-blank in first single ‘How Much’, ahead of woozily discordant strings and a stomping neo-psychedelic rhythm. The lyric brims with imagery of supermarket breakdowns, lilos, snarks and silos while an anthemic guitar hook soars throughout. Not content to leave the song at a stable conclusion, a thumping ‘I am the Walrus’-esque bass outro propels the track boomerang-style back to a space of adroit experimentation. “I've heard Olympic Girls, and I had to pick my jaw up off the floor”, wrote https://www.stuff.co.nz/auckland/108148664/Tiny-Ruins-Hollie-Fullbrooks-new-album-jaw-dropping (Grant Smithies). “Clustered around more introspective passages typical of confessional singer-songwriters are gnarlier phrases that give her work its buzzy voltage: arresting visual images, weird associations, daisy-chains of telling detail.” See https://www.tinyruins.com/shows (Tour Dates.) MOJO Review of Olympic Girls - ★★★★ UNCUT Review of Olympic Girls - 8/10 "Part of the charm of Olympic Girls lies in the layers of mystery in each song. Inspired by literature, science, nature and human experience, these mysteries lie waiting to be carefully unfolded…” God Is In the TV - 9/10 "An album confident in its vulnerability and luxuriating in a bigger sound." Loud & Quiet Review of Olympic Girls - 8/10 "… songs that change sound and mood during their duration, never meandering and always captivating.” BUST Review of Olympic Girls - 5/5 “… a deeper listen to these eleven tracks exposes a breadth of influences that spans decades.” - The Wire Review of Olympic Girls “She is always looking uneasily toward the next line, or moving toward mysticism. In sentimental contexts, she generates lines of wicked ambition.”— The New York Times “Fullbrook’s hushed yet forceful songs, packed with obsessives and...
In today's episode of Favorite Songs By, we are featuring not just an artist, but an entire group; a first for this podcast. Hailing from their loft in Chicago, Illinois, Rolling Stone has described them as “one of America's most consistently interesting bands”, and I couldn't agree more. Ladies and gentleman, today we give you Wilco. Rising from the ashes of roots rock band Uncle Tupelo in 1994, Wilco was formed by frontman Jeff Tweedy along with other Uncle Tupelo members, Max Johnston, John Stirrat and Ken Coomer. Their lineup has been a bit of a revolving door over the years, but the music has remained distinct and highly crafted. Categorized as alternative rock and alternative country, they matured into an eclectic indie rock ensemble with a number of critically acclaimed albums to boot. Wilco saw their first major success after a highly publicized dispute with their label, Reprise, from which they were dropped after their 2001 album, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was deemed by the label head as “unmarketable”. Wilco proved that there was, in fact, an audience for their sound when they subsequently released the album for free on their website and sold out a string of US shows as a result. They were later picked up by Nonesuch records, sold over 55,000 copies in the first official week and debuted at number 13 on the Billboard pop-album chart. And, in 2004, they won their first Grammy for Best Alternative Album for another one of their more ambitious releases, A Ghost Is Born. Today they have their own label, dBpm Records, and the current Wilco lineup includes Jeff Tweedy, John Stirratt (bass), Pat Sansone (multi-instrumentalist), Glenn Kotche (drum), Mikael Jorgensen (piano and keyboard), and Nels Cline (guitar). Tweedy is a songwriting force and is thought of as one of the best of his generation. Wilco as a whole have redefined the role of record labels today and have truly tested the boundaries of “alternative” music.
Praised by the New York Times for his “genuine originality,” Rufus Wainwright has established himself as one of the great male vocalists and songwriters of his generation. One early electronic instrument often mentioned may be the Theremin, invented by Professor Léon Theremin circa 1919–1920.[6] Other early electronic instruments include the Audion Piano invented in 1915 by Lee De Forest who was inventor of triode audion as mentioned above.
