Bob Clearmountain and Rhett Davies, legends in the world of music recording, production, and engineering, join guest host Ben Givarz to delve into the process of transforming Roxy Music's iconic album "Avalon" and Bryan Ferry's platinum record "Boys and Girls" into Dolby Atmos®. They dive deep into the background of the recording and engineering processes they used on these and other legendary Roxy Music records in the 70s and 80s, as well as how they used the original multi-tracks to go from 5.1 mixes in the early 2000s, onto these incredible new Dolby Atmos mixes. This interview is part of our new series, "Reimagining the Classics."“It was a lot more complicated than what either of us had remembered from the original mixes. But still, it's always an adventure and I love a challenge. Especially when the music is great. This music, I still listen to it all the time. It's such a pleasure to listen to and to work with. John Waite was in The Babys, out front of two pop hits that both peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100, ("Isn't It Time" and "Everytime I Think of You") His solo career started with a really good but forgotten 1982 debut album Ignition, which produced the single "Change". It didn't chart on Billboard's Hot 100 during its initial release (June 1982) but was #16 rock track on AOR radio stations and was produced by the great Bob Clearmountain. And Patty Smyth sings background vocals on "Change" But it was the album No Brakes that gave him his career a real path to moving forward. "Missing You" went to No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and the album was a top 10 record. We spend our time digging into his often-overlooked career. A guy with a distinctive voice that rocks. “Perched perfectly between anthemic mainstream rock and sleek post-new wave pop, it was a minor miracle -- a flawlessly written, classicist pop song, delivered with a stylish, MTV-ready flair. It deservedly became not just a number one hit, but one of those records that everybody knows” -- Stephen Thomas Erlwine / allmusic.com Waite had two more singles from No Brakes, including "Tears" which was a #8 hit on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart and #37 top 40. His next album had a single, "Every Step of the Way" that got radio play (#4 rock charts and #25 top 40 and would be his last top 40 hit. He did join former Babys bandmates Jonathan Cain and Ricky Phillips, along with Neal Schon and drummer Deen Castronovo from Journey, to form Bad English and the 1989 ballad "When I See You Smile" went to No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 and the album sold nearly two million copies. I didn't love that band, but I've always had a spot for John Waite in my rocker heart. He kept going after the band broke up. But he keeps going. Waite is not always the first thought as a terrific rock band frontman - but he was - and is. He is still on the road. A singer who fronts a band like someone who wants to be there. Who has been there. He's 72 years old. He's on tour as I recorded this, with dates booked well into 2024. One who is worth mentioning if you talk about great rock and roll frontmen of the past, for like 50 years. He's a rock and roll lifer still working. There is honor in that. *** Read Rob's current and archived writing at rockforwardmusic.com WEBSITE: rockpopandroll.com EMAIL: rockpoprollpodcast@gmail.com SUBSCRIBE: Apple Podcasts Spotify Google Podcasts

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/radioflowok/message

This week, on the pod, Mark and Brendan has some sizzling new tunes for your playlists, and of course a tribute to the late Charlie Watts, of the Rolling Stones! To preview the content of the podcast episode, let's note Brendan began with a Metallica cover from none other than Chris Stapleton. Mark followed with a new single from Angus & Julia Stone. Up next, B. features a new, non-album single from Baltimore's Future Islands, while Mark previews a new song from New Zealand guitarist Roy Montgomery, with Brooklyn's Katie Von Schmeichler on vocals. The archive track this week is a 30-second snippet "Street Fighting Man," recorded in Brussels, Belgium, in 1973, perhaps featuring the Rolling Stones at the peak of their powers. If you don't know of The Brussels Affair bootleg, well, it has been remixed by Bob Clearmountain for a deluxe edition of Goat's Head Soup that is easily found on Spotify. (It came out last year. Scroll down and look for the word "Live.") There are bonus tracks, as usual, but you will have to sign up for our email newsletter to get those gems. If you want to do that now, please take a second to sign up for our newsletter right here. Have a great week! ---Mark and Brendan

Born in 1956 in New Haven, Connecticut, Mickey took up drums when he was 11 and played with local bands. *******SUBSCRIBE/RATE/REVIEW!!! www.richredmond.com/listen The Rich Redmond Show is sponsored by: Big Dot Lighting - Commercial LED Lighting Specialists -and- Bruce Cline Home Loans & Mortgage Refinance | Movement Mortgage www.musiciansmortgage.com His early inspirations ranged from Ringo Starr and John Bonham through to Chicago's Danny Seraphine and - under the influence of his older brothers - the classic R'n'B of Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding and James Brown. Mickey got serious about drums from the age of 13 when he and two of his brothers formed a school band called The Rack. Later, Mickey went to a state school for music, but the academic route was not for him and he left early to play in bands. When he was 17 he joined the Scratch Band in Connecticut where he first gained recording experience. Next Mickey started to make the two hour train journey into Manhattan and eventually joined a band called Tom Dicky and the Desires. They were managed by music mogul Tommy Mottola who also managed Hall and Oates - big news in the early 1980s. Impressed by Mickey, Mottola asked him to record Hall and Oates' new album ‘Private Eyes'. Around the same time Mickey met top producer Bob Clearmountain who'd just found a new singer called Bryan Adams. Within months Mickey had recorded Adams' second album ‘You Want It You Got It'. Next thing Mickey's out on tour with Hall and Oates. All this was in 1981 when Mickey was 25. This was his big-break year and he's never really looked back. The calls started to come in thick and fast - Tom Waits, Cher, Tina Turner, Los Lobos. Mickey worked with Hall and Oates through till 1986, since then he's been Bryan Adams' regular drummer. He says “I get to sound more like me on Bryan's records than on anyone else's”. He's also had considerable success recording and touring with The Cult. He played on their 1989 album ‘Sonic Temple' which sold three million. During the period he was playing with Hall & Oates, Curry met producer Bob Clearmountain, who had recently begun working with a young Bryan Adams, and appeared on Adams' second album, You Want It You Got It. His appearance on nearly all of Adams' subsequent albums coincided with his rise to prominence. Following his stint with Hall & Oates, Curry began touring full time with Adams, a collaboration that continues to this day. Other notable sessions have been with Alice Cooper, Stevie Winwood, David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Carly Simon, T-Bone Burnett and Richard Thompson. Some Things That Came Up: -Started playing at 11 -Recording with Hall and Oates and touring with Bryan Adams at age 25 -Meeting Ringo -Working with Mutt and Bob -More cowbell -One handed 16ths -Playing Yamaha since 1982 -Piccolo snares -Working with Joe Pesci -Robert DeNiro story -Mickey would love to just play in the studio everyday The Rich Redmond Show is about all things music, motivation and success. Simon Phillips Interview: One of my favorites! Simon opens up about his London session career (which started at age 16!), what he learned, how it shaped his career as a musician & as a drummer… losing his home in the California fires... working with Mike Oldfield, Bob Clearmountain, John Paul Jones, Jeff Beck, Tony Hymas, Roger Glover, Gary Moore, David Gilmour, Phil Manzanera, Bob Dylan, Jack Bruce, The Who, Chrissy Hynde… dealing with some personal dark times, moving here from England, being an optimist, Tony Roma’s, bangers & mash, and LOADS more VERY exciting things. What a guy! Simon Phillips’ career began at age 12, playing with his dad’s band. By 16, he was on his way to becoming THE first-call session drummer in London and since then, besides being a member of Toto for 12 years, he’s played with top artists like: Jeff Beck, Mick Jagger, The Who, Peter Gabriel, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Judas Priest, Michael Shenker, Al DiMeola, Pete Townshend, Stanley Clarke, Gary Moore, Frank Zappa, Bernie Marsden, Phil Manzanera, Mike Rutherford, Carlos Santana and many more Support this Show: http://www.everyonelovesguitar.com/support Subscribe https://www.everyonelovesguitar.com/subscribe/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/EveryoneLovesGuitar/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/everyonelovesguitar/

In this solo episode, Mark shares an article that he'd had published in the summer of 2009 when he was asked to make a prediction about something that likely wouldn't exist in publishing ten years later. WARNING: This episode contains a short clip of Mark singing a parody version of "Summer of '69" by Bryan Adams. (He couldn't help it. Song lyrics haunt his brain. The minute he mentioned the summer of 2009, the classic Adams song came to mind.) Prior to the interview, Mark shares a word from the episode's sponsor, Findaway Voices . . .He talks about the sources of his latest payment from Findaway Voices, which don't include the big players, like Audible or Apple, or Google, or Kobo. You can learn more about how you can get your work distributed to retailers and library systems around the world at starkreflections.ca/Findaway. As an introduction to the article, Mark shares the back-story of how he wrote article for an online magazine called The Mark News (no relation) on the topic of publishing and bookselling. This had been back when he was on the Board of Directors for the Canadian Booksellers Association, an active member of a couple of Campus Bookstore associations as well, and heavily involved in using the print-on-demand technology of The Espresso Book Machine in a bookstore in Hamilton, Ontario. The reason Mark started thinking about the article in question was because of a sale he noticed on Kindle for the book that the article was republished in. A 2011 volume called Living at the Tip: Navigating the Digital Tipping Point of the Book World. This book is something Mark published in the space of a few hours when Kindle first announced KDP Select, their exclusivity program. He collected the articles together, used Amazon's cover generation tool and published it, just to have a title in the program at all times. In the article being shared, Mark explains the basic workings of territorial rights and how it has historically operated with publishers in various countries, agents, and authors. He also shares his own frustration with the fake virtual borders in a digital world that don't seem necessary because the old ones were based on warehousing books inside the borders of a country after they were shipped there, or the rights were acquired for that territory. In a digital world, the shipping of dead trees from continent to continent is not an issue, and, therefore, is something that Mark speculated SHOULD begin to disappear ten years from when he wrote it in 2009. He goes on to explain how self-published and indie authors and smaller publishers have embraced the new digital world in ways that the major or larger publishers haven't. This is most likely due to the fact that big publishers are heavily invested in printing, stocking and shipping physical books, which represents the majority of their revenue. EP 12: Jordan West Jordan West is a drummer, vocalist, and songwriter from Indiana currently based in Los Angeles, CA. Her move to LA was largely inspired by studio legend Bob Clearmountain, who randomly stumbled upon her singing and drumming at a rock club in Indiana. He told her she should make the move out to Los Angeles and that if she did, he would love to work with her. She took his advice and they recorded their first single together, "Blueberry Smoke", featuring Andy Summers on guitar and mastered by Bob Ludwig. She is also in the process of finishing an EP with producer/engineer Mark Hornsby. The project was sponsored by Roland, Ludwig, Avid, and DPA mics, and an accompanying documentary about the process was filmed by Nigel Dick (set for release fall 2018). Jordan also works as a freelance studio and touring drummer/singer. She has recently performed and recorded with Judith Hill and Kailee Morgue. She also has her own ongoing series of Reverb.com lesson videos for drums and writes/records for television. THE MINDFUL MUSICIAN PODCAST HOMEPAGE: http://www.mattoestreicher.com/themindfulmusician/ TODAYS GUEST: Jeffrey Lee Campbell LINKS: www.jeffreyleecampbell.com BUY HIS BOOK HERE: https://www.amazon.com/Stand-Close-Improbable-Adventure-Guitarist/dp/1947309331 BIO: Originally from North Carolina, Jeffrey Lee Campbell was raised on a steady diet of rock 'n' roll, soul, and Top 40 music. Playing his first PAYING gig at age 13, Jeffrey is a lifer. Jeffrey picked up the guitar at the tender age of 8, spending his formative years gigging in bands “anywhere and everywhere” (school dances, frat parties, night clubs, etc). After graduating high school, Jeffrey was accepted into the prestigious "Studio Music and Jazz" program at the University of Miami. Ultimately chasing his dream North, Jeffrey Lee relocated to New York City and quickly established himself as one of the city's top musicians. His performance experiences range from iconic intimate venues such as CBGB, The Bottom Line, The Bitter End, MTV and NBC's Saturday Night Live . . . to huge concert stages including NYC's Madison Square Garden, London's Wembley Stadium, and Japan's Tokyo Dome. Jeffrey Lee strummed his way around the world on Sting's "Nothing Like the Sun" World Tour ("blazing guitar work" - Rolling Stone, "soaring guitar" - USA Today), proudly sharing the stage with musical heavyweights Branford Marsalis, Mino Cinelu, and Kenny Kirkland in twenty-five countriesacross six different continents. In addition to Sting's World Tour, Jeffrey Lee was also a part of Amnesty International's "Human Rights Now!" World Tour (featuring Sting, Peter Gabriel, Bruce Springsteen, Tracy Chapman, and Youssou N'Dour). Playing 20 concerts worldwide (including extraordinary shows in Africa and India), the Amnesty tour was truly a once in a lifetime experience. One of Jeffrey's top Amnesty highlights was sitting in with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Bandat the tour's concert in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Back at home in NYC, Jeffrey Lee had the extreme pleasure of playing guitar with Aretha Franklin (for "VH-1 Divas Live" - an all-star tribute to the Queen of Soul at Radio City Music Hall). The "Divas" concert climaxed with a finale that found Jeffrey jamming with Ms. Franklin, Mary J Blige, Nelly Furtado and surprise special guest Mr. Stevie Wonder. Other performance credits include Jon Bon Jovi, Michael Bublé, Bob James, and singer/songwriter Sam Phillips. As a studio musician, Jeffrey has worked with some of the industry's top producers such as T Bone Burnett, Phil Ramone, Rob Cavallo, and David Foster —as well as legendary engineers Bob Clearmountain and Elliot Scheiner. Jeffrey has recorded at The Record Plant, Hit Factory, Avatar (aka The Power Station), Quad, Unique, Sear . . . and many more. Jeffrey's extensive Broadway credits include Saturday Night Fever, Seussical, Mamma Mia, and School of Rock - the Musical. Most recently, Jeffrey has added "published author" to his list of accomplishments, releasing his "insightful and engaging," coming-of-age memoir "Do Stand So Close: my improbable adventure as Sting's guitarist" (from Deeds Publishing).

Ryan is the first engineer I've had on the show, and what an honour it is! This Grammy Award-winning engineer has worked on recordings for Joe Henry, Bonnie Raitt, Aimee Mann, Ray Lamontagne, Allen Toussaint, Aaron Neville, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, The Milk Carton Kids, and countless others. Ryan has engineered many of my favorite albums from the past 15 years and I've always admired his sense of fidelity and space that comes through on his albums. I spoke with Ryan from his Stampede Origin Studio in LA, and we discussed how he went from being a classical pianist to a recording engineer, getting his first job with Bob Clearmountain on a Springsteen recording, working with long-term collaborators like Joe Henry, how he's approaching mixing the final Allen Toussaint record, and his philosophy on the recording process and his role in it. It's a very illuminating discussion for anyone interested in art and music, not just recording nerds!
