Puppetry, Passion & Politics with Puppet Whisperer Sue Buckmaster

The Perception Podcast

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. In this episode, I talk to theatre director, puppet whisperer, author and Artistic Director of Theatre-Rites, Sue Buckmaster. Sue is often asked to speak about the high profile projects that she's working on but in this fascinating conversation we talk about all the things that have formed her, from her extraordinary family background, to her deep desire to better herself and the debilitating illness that changed the course of her career. Sue also shares what she thinks are the ingredients that make a good puppeteer, the place of politics in children's theatre and why we as humans respond so emotionally to puppets. Please join me as we look at life through a different lens.     KEY TAKEAWAYS Puppetry is a powerful art form that allows audiences to project their emotions onto objects, creating a deep connection and cathartic experience. Children's theatre is often undervalued but provides a unique opportunity to engage young minds, sparking their imagination and encouraging them to question the world around them. Embracing your personal struggles, such as illness or lack of education, can lead to a more profound understanding of yourself and ultimately enrich your artistic practice. The rehearsal process is a crucial part of creating theatre, allowing for experimentation, failure, and growth, which ultimately leads to a more authentic and impactful final product. Access to the arts, both for audiences and practitioners, is essential for fostering a more inclusive and understanding society. Spirituality, magic, and the feminine power are important elements in Sue's work, allowing her to explore deeper themes and connect with audiences on a more profound level. Process is often more important than the final product in theatre, as it allows for personal and artistic growth, as well as the development of meaningful relationships. Politics in children's theatre is about allowing young people to practice being political beings, questioning the world around them and forming their own opinions. BEST MOMENTS "I didn't have any energy. What energised me, what could I watch or do that made me feel like I had some? And then I gradually got some, and what did that really feel like?" "Children's theatre is young people practising to be political beings. They haven't decided yet. That's why I quite like hanging out with them." "It's human nature to connect. And, you know, it's important that we think of the earth as, and nature as this object, that this, this exchange of energy that it holds up." "I can proudly own many parts of myself. Um, but thankfully to women now who are doing what they're doing now, I love women now and artists now. I'm so grateful to them, and I would do anything to imbue them more with more power, um, for the good, for the good." "Rehearsals are just the tipping moment when you're sorting it out. It's like rehearsal. I think people tend to go, oh, it takes four weeks to make that show. And that's the wrong thing. So that's why I like to talk more about process, process as product."   ABOUT THE GUEST Dr Sue Buckmaster is the Artistic Director of Theatre-Rites, a puppetry expert and the fifth generation of theatre practitioners in her family. Since 1996 she has directed over 30 site-specific and theatre productions for Theatre-Rites including: the award-winning Mischief, a co-production with Sadler's Wells and the Dance Touring Partnership and The Welcoming Party  a co-production with Manchester International Festival and the Ruhrtriennale Festival. In 2023 Sue directed an adapted version of Zoe's Peculiar Journey Through Time (originally a co-production with Burgtheater Vienna); created Something In The Air, a co-production with Schauspeilhaus Bochum, and in 2024 she directed Journey of a Refugee for Croydon Borough of Culture (an adaptation of The Welcoming Party).     In 2021, with Dr Liam Jarvis, she co-authored the book Theatre-Rites Animating Puppets, Objects and Sites.  Theatre-Rites: Animating Puppets, Objects & Sites by Liam Jarvis     CONTACT METHOD FACEBOOK - https://www.facebook.com/caropartridge LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/caroline-partridge-03131520 Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/partridge_caroline

For each and every performance the theater director, playwright, choreographer, and sound and lighting designer Robert Wilson creates, time isn't just of the essence—it is the essence. Perhaps best known as the director of the four-act opera Einstein on the Beach, which he composed with Philip Glass and debuted in 1976, Wilson now has nearly 200 stage productions to his name. These include Dorian, which premiered last year in Düsseldorf, and The Life and Death of Marina Abramović, which opened at the Manchester International Festival in 2011. What stands out about Wilson's work, among many things, is its rare ability to disorient viewers while also enchanting them. Duration is often another part of the equation: Some of the performances on Wilson's résumé have ranged from seven hours to an astonishing seven days. Many critics, writers, and scholars have agreed that Wilson has completely reshaped the landscape of theater, vastly expanding its vocabularies and horizons. On this episode, Wilson talks about his personal philosophies around silence and sound, the intersections of architecture and theater, and his enduring vision for the Watermill Center.Special thanks to our Season 8 sponsor, Van Cleef & Arpels.Show notes:[04:31] The King of Spain[04:32] The Life and Times of Sigmund Freud[04:34] Deafman Glance[04:59] John Cage[09:02] Madama Butterfly[13:51] “Time to Think”[14:34] Marina Abramović[16:37] The Ring[16:39] King Lear[16:41] Einstein on the Beach[16:43] Philip Glass[18:14] Parsifal[18:50] The Watermill Center[28:55] Dorian[32:09] Time Rocker[32:15] Lou Reed[34:27] Ka Mountain and Guardenia Terrace[39:28] Festival of Autumn in Paris[40:38] The Golden Windows[41:04] Pratt Institute[43:45] Medea[44:48] Edison[44:58] Dr. Faustus Lights the Lights[45:00] Relative Calm[46:32] H-100 Seconds to Midnight[52:27] The Life and Times of Joseph Stalin[52:40] A Letter for Queen Victoria

With her new sound and light installation, Arcadia, Theatre and Opera director Deborah Warner has brought the feel of the field into The Factory – the new home for MIF. The Factory is still very much a building site open to the elements, but for one weekend only the festival is providing an opportunity for visitors, to see the new construction from the inside. And once inside the concrete shell, they will enter Arcadia, Deborah's subversive and challenging artwork to Manchester's spirit of progress. Deborah talks to Nick about the appeal of making an installation in an unfinished venue. One of Pakistan's most celebrated artists has used his MIF commission to explore his concept of Eart - his term to describe ways of thinking, being and acting creatively in real life. Under the title, A Manifesto of Possibilities, Rana presents an exhibition which interrogates new ways of living, and he makes real one of his ideas with the creation of his version of the essential corner shop. Nick Ahad pops in to the pop-up store to talk to producer Shanaz Gulzar about why ordering produce and stocking shelves is a new art frontier. The death of her father last June prompted the novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche to write a emotional essay, Notes On Grief, for the New Yorker. The essay expanded into a book earlier this year, and now courtesy of MIF it has been adapted for the stage. Nicky Byrne, Head of Clinical Services at Willow Wood Hospice and Nick Ahad attended the preview and discuss a play that meets a moment when many around the country are dealing with their own grief. Hayley Finn, aka Skyliner, has been leading what has been described as “anti-tours” around Manchester for almost a decade. Her urban tours not only seek to reveal new things about the city to its inhabitants as well as its visitors, but to empower those on her tours with a sense that a city is a place created by those who live and work within it and that they too can and should contribute to the never-ending project that is improving the city. Nick meets Hayley to discuss one of the tours she's leading for MIF, There Was A Bench Here Once. Presenter: Nick Ahad Producer: Ekene Akalawu

Framework for Resilience is a three-part series of online conversations which bring together activists, artists, researchers and educators to think about the world we are creating, the world we are destroying, the systems which will fall, and those which should prevail.  In this third and final episode of the series, we discuss migration and adaptation. Host Kayt Hughes (Public Programme Producer at FACT) and mediator Maitreyi Maheshwari (Head of Programme at FACT) and joined by speakers Dr. Ali Meghji (Lecturer, Researcher), Jessica El Mal (Artist) and Niloo Sharifi (Multidisciplinary Artist). In 1990, the United Nations anticipated that ‘the greatest single impact of climate change could be on human migration’ with estimates predicting 200 million ‘climate refugees’ by 2050. While the scientific case for human-caused climate change has gained more certainty, the consequences for populations affected both by meteorological and political factors remain unpredictable. The disparity between countries and populations that had been a legacy of colonialism is becoming more pronounced as the effects of climate change are not contained within the borders of any single country. Whether motivated by need, opportunity or force, human mobility has been an inherent part of the human experience for millennia. As people move and adapt to new environments, how is our sense of self affected by the perspectives offered by distance away from a ‘home’ and across settled generations? Our sense of self is often located in ideas of place and narratives drawn from history and biology, creating a tension between our desire to assimilate and belong somewhere or to preserve our origins. How might digital spaces create alternative definitions of community and identities shaped by more fluid notions of belonging? And how can new technologies allow us to adapt to changing ecological conditions? The reading list for this conversation can be found here. ------ ABOUT FRAMEWORK FOR RESILIENCE This online conversation is part of The Living Planet, FACT’s year-long season which focuses on the non-human, and deals with themes such as climate change, ecology and communication, as well as the violence of ‘othering’. This series will inform our programme for the rest of the year which focuses on systems of knowledge and classification in the formation of identity and the exercise of power. They also form part of Artsformation, a research project which seeks to identify new ways of working, specifically at the intersection between art, society and technology, to overcome current social crises including justice, democracy and climate. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. The title for these sessions is taken from the artwork, PESTS, by Shonagh Short. Commissioned by FACT in 2020 for FACT Together. ABOUT DR. ALI MEGHJI Dr Ali Meghji is a Lecturer in Social Inequalities in the department of sociology, Cambridge. He is the director for the MPhil in marginality and exclusion, the course organiser for SOC12 Empire, colonialism, imperialism, and the chair of 'Decolonising sociology’. Currently, Ali’s predominant research interests lie in bridging the epistemological, methodological, and empirical divergences between critical race theory and decolonial thought. Through this research, Ali intends to balance the study of national racialised social systems with the global process of coloniality. ABOUT JESSICA EL MAL Jessica El Mal is an English-Moroccan creative dedicated to valuing time, care and human connection in everything she works on. With a particular interest in ecology and migration, her work is both deeply personal and yet draws on the universality of the human experience through a balance of digital techniques, aesthetics and interaction. The work tends to address global structures of power through critical research, multidisciplinary projects, and speculative future imaginaries often centered around collaboration, co-curation and collective knowledge systems. Her current project ‘The Digital Forest’ commissioned by Signal Film and Media, Grizedale Arts and The Forestry Commission, explores how the online space can open up opportunities for sensory experiences of nature for black and brown communities. She also runs an art and nature group for migrant, asylum seeker and refugee artists called ‘This Garden Group’ which consists of workshops in a range of natural spaces, a peer support group and a public facing program to critique the role of botany in colonialism. Jessica's most recent exhibition Grounds for Concern exhibited at MAMA Rotterdam, challenged the authority of man-made borders through a digital installation and workshops, and her FACT Together digital commission has just gone live (see www.visionsofafuture.com). Previous projects have been with Manchester International Festival and Journey’s Festival International, as well as many collaborations with non-arts organisations such as the Collegium for Language in a Changing Society, Let’s Keep Growing Longsite, Furness Refugee Support. ABOUT NILOO SHARIFI Niloo Sharifi is a multidisciplinary artist from Liverpool, making collaborative works that facilitate polyphony. Her most recent work is the-magic-tree.co.uk, a digital piece that transforms by merging with pictures uploaded by visitors. The idea is to see what emerges when you let everyone speak; the same ethos informed the curation of the Liverpool chapter of the Goethe Institut’s Arrival City.

Melati Suryodarmo, (b. 1969, Solo, Indonesia) graduated from the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunscheweig, Germany under the tutelage of Marina Abramović and Anzu Furukawa with a Meisterschüler qualification in Performance Art. Her practice is informed by Butoh, dance and history, among others. Her work is the result of ongoing research in the movements of the body and its relationship to the self and the world. These are enshrined in photography, translated into choreographed dances, enacted in video or executed in live performances. Suryodarmo is interested in the psychological and physical agitations that may be from the self or the world but somehow result in lasting change the individual. This belief in change or growth through bodily action belies her early induction in meditation, which she continues to practice. The body is the home for memories and the self, rather than the individual itself, and the body's system. The way the body translates internal and external ideas enriches the attitude and thoughts of the self. Meeting Furukawa, an accomplished Butoh practitioner, had opened her eyes on the expressive qualities of the body, a form of communication that transcends verbal language. This experience has motivated her lifelong studies into Butoh and other artistic forms concerned with the human body. As a trained performance artist, presence is integral to the accomplishment of Suryodarmo's work in all mediums. The senses picks up non-verbal inputs and receive them as communication of intent, emotion, energy or identity. These non-verbal inputs open the door to sensitive and individual perception and the creation of presence. However, everyone processes these inputs differently and interpret them differently based on their unique consciousness. By compiling, extracting, conceptualising and translating some of these factors of presence that she recognises into her work, she intends to tease open the fluid border between the body and its environment. These movements are understood through the metaphor of poets, who similarly assembles words and spaces to create their poetry. Suryodarmo draws inspiration from her real experiences in the world. The path of history informs her perception of the everyday and the now. Her works often reflect the process that lead to current events, be it political, global or highly personal. In her abstracted gestures and poetical acts, the presence of each work is brought to a concentrated level of intensity. In abstracting these acts from their common context, they are made to correspond with new associations and sometimes identify radically with different meanings. The works' abstract narrative throws the spotlight on the audience's bodily response. This often results in a level of factual absurdity in the work, which is acknowledged and welcome. Suryodarmo has presented her work in various international festivals and exhibitions, including Reanacting History: Collective Actions and Everyday Gestures (2017), National Museum of Contemporary Art Korea, Gwacheon, South Korea; SUNSHOWER: Contemporary Art from Southeast Asia 1980s to Now (2017), National Art Centre Tokyo & Mori Art Museum, travelled to Fukuoka Art Museum, Japan; AFTERWORK (2016), Para Site, Hong Kong, travelled to (2017) Ilham Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; East Asia Feminism: FANTasia (2015), Seoul Museum of Art, Seoul, South Korea; 8th Asia Pacific Triennale (2015), Queensland Art Gallery & Gallery of Modern Art, Queensland, Australia; 5th Guangzhou Triennale (2015), Guangzhou, China; The Roving Eye: Contemporary Art from Southeast Asia (2014), Arter, Istanbul, Turkey; Medium at Large (2014), Singapore Art Museum, Singapore; Luminato Festival (2012), Toronto, Canada; Beyond the Self: Contemporary Portraiture from Asia (2011), National Portrait Gallery, Canberra, Australia; Marina Abramović Presents… (2009), Manchester International Festival, Manchester, U.K.; Incheon Women Artists' Biennale (2009), Incheon, South Korea; Manifesta 7 (2008), Bolzano, Italy; Wind from the East: Perspectives on Asian Contemporary Art (2007), Kiasma, Helsinki, Finland. Since 2007, Suryodarmo has been organizing an annual Performance Art Laboratory and Undisclosed Territory, a performance art festival, in Solo, Indonesia. In 2012, she founded “Studio Plesungan”, an art space for performance artists to use as a laboratory. In 2017, she served as Artistic Director for Jiwa, the 17th Jakarta Biennale. She currently lives and works between Gross Gleidingen, Germany and Solo, Indonesia.Artist StatementThe world that inspires me to move my thoughts is the world inside me. The body becomeslike a home which functions as container of memories, living organism. The systeminside the psychological body that changes all the time has enriched my idea to developnew structures of attitude and thoughts. I try to perceive my surroundings as the fact ofthe real presence of now, but considering the path of its history. I try to understand thelanguage that are not spoken, and opens the door of perceptions. I respect the freedom inour minds to perceive things coming through our individual sensory register system.Crossing the boundaries of cultural and political encounters has been a challenge thatstimulates me discovering new identification. An effort to find identity is yet a dangerousact of losing the ground of origin. For me, the process of making artwork is a life long researchthat never stops me to put myself inside the metamorphic constellation. I intend totouch the fluid border between the body and its environment through my art works. I aimto create a concentrated level of intensity without the use of narrative structures. Talkingabout politics, society or psychology makes no sense to me if the nerves are not able todigest the information. I love it when a performance reaches a level of factual absurdity.Melati Suryodarmo's performances have been dealing with the relationship between ahuman body, a culture in which it belongs to and a constellation where it lives. Through thepresence, she compiles, extracts, conceptualized and translates some phenomenon orsubjects into movement, actions, and gestures that are specified to her performance. MelatiSuryodarmo´s performances concern with cultural, social and political aspects, inwhich she articulates through her psychological and physical body. Her performances featureelements of physical presence and visual art to talk about identity, energy, politics andrelationships between the body and its environments.Melati Suryodarmo studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig, Germanyunder Marina Abramovic.Suryodarmo has presented her works in various internationalfestivals and exhibitions since 1996, including the 50th Venice Biennale 2003, Marking theterritory, IMMA Dublin. e.t.c. “Some people are Mancunian by pure accident of birth. I chose to become one.”   Urban Splash founder Tom Bloxham MBE, was told his ambitious regeneration projects - from Britannia Mills to Timber Wharf - ‘would never work’.  Lisa Morton discovers how he went from selling posters and fire extinguishers, to championing Manchester’s creative industry, becoming one of the largest modular housing builders in the UK, and overseeing the creation of Manchester International Festival’s brand new home - jumbo jet-sized culture venue, The Factory.  We Built This City is a series of conversations with some of the amazing Mancunians - born, bred or adopted – who put the heart into modern Manchester. Delving into Dance

Dan Daw is an Australian dance artist based in Birmingham. Dan grew up in Whyalla, in country South Australia.  Starting dance at a young age, his grandmother was a callisthenics teacher, so was surrounded by dance and movement from a young age. "It gave me an outlet and a way to express myself, and to be in a space where I could see myself represented." Dan started dancing with Restless Dance Theatre in 2002, before dancing with a range of different companies including; Australian Dance Theatre, and Force Majeure (Australia), FRONTLINEdance, Scottish Dance Theatre, balletLORENT, Candoco Dance Company (UK), and with Skånes Dansteater (Sweden).Throughout his performance career Dan has worked with Kat Worth, Garry Stewart, Kate Champion, Janet Smith, Adam Benjamin, Wendy Houstoun, Sarah Michelson, Rachid Ouramdane, Nigel Charnock, Matthias Sperling, Marc Brew, Claire Cunningham, Martin Forsberg, Carl Olof Berg and Javier de Frutos.Dan left Australia to work with Candoco Dance Company, finding a lack of opportunities in Australia, depressed at the prospect of needing to go on the dole after significant performance opportunities. There are bigger conversations that need to be had about who can be considered a dancer within an Australian context and who is missing out on professional opportunities. Dan's work often blurs the lines between dance and theatre and can have a common theme related to time. Dan has created solo works – ‘Beast’ by Martin Forsberg and ‘On One Condition’ by Graham Adey, the latter receiving the Adelaide Fringe Best Theatre Award 2017. In 2020 Dan will premiere his new work The Dan Daw Show, which explores inspiration, porn and audiences expectations of disabled artists.  Dan was interviewed during a successful run of Thank You Very Much by Claire Cunningham during Manchester International Festival.  This is the first episode in a season looking at Australian dance artists working and living overseas.

We last saw the work of the Cuban artist Tania Bruguera when she was commissioned for the turbine hall of Tate Modern. She’s known for facing down police interrogation of her work in her native Havana. Now she’s harnessed Manchester’s international community for what she calls a School of Integration. In May, Ibrahim Mahama was one of the six Ghanaian artists chosen to represent the country as it made its debut at the Venice Biennale. Now, he’s come to Manchester to create Parliament of Ghosts – an exhibition at the Whitworth Art Gallery which reflects both on Ghana’s time under British rule, and the years following the country’s independence. The Mexican-Canadian electronic artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s new work, Atmospheric Memory uses the very latest technology but is rooted in the story of the English mathematician and computer pioneer Charles Babbage. We’ll be asking why this very contemporary artist is seeking inspiration in the nineteenth century. Presenter: Samira Ahmed Producers: Ekene Akalawu and Olive Clancy

Elsewhere his critically acclaimed plays include Sea Wall, which premiered at the Bush in 2008, Heisenberg, which was seen in the West End last year, and a new adaptation of Brecht's The Threepenny Opera which premiered at the National Theatre in 2016 starring Rory Kinnear and Rosalie Craig. He's perhaps most well-known for penning the stage adaptation of Mark Haddon's bestselling novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time which ran in the West End for over 1,600 performances and on Broadway for almost two years – earning Stephens major accolades on both sides of the Atlantic. Last year his new piece with Frantic Assembly's Scott Graham and Underworld's Karl Hyde, Fatherland, premiered at the Manchester International Festival and it now transfers to the Lyric Hammersmith, running from 25 May to 23 June.

This week we delve into the world of old movie musicals brought to the stage. We take a look at the Broadway tour of An American in Paris. We also go in-depth with the classic Spanish drama, Yerma, staged by the Young Vic Theatre in London and shared with the world by National Theatre Live in London. An American in Paris, tells the thrilling story of a young American soldier, a beautiful French girl, and an indomitable European city, each yearning for a new beginning in the aftermath of war. Featuring a score including the songs “I Got Rhythm,” “‘S Wonderful,” “But Not for Me,” “Stairway to Paradise,” “They Can't Take That Away” and orchestral music including “Concerto in F,” “2nd Prelude,” “2nd Rhapsody” and “An American in Paris.” In Yerma, the incredible Billie Piper (Penny Dreadful, Great Britain) returns in her Evening Standard Best Actress award-winning role. A young woman is driven to the unthinkable by her desperate desire to have a child in Simon Stone's radical production of Lorca's achingly powerful masterpiece. The unmissable theatre phenomenon sold out at the Young Vic and critics call it ‘an extraordinary theatrical triumph' (The Times) and ‘stunning, searing, unmissable' (Mail on Sunday). Billie Piper's lead performance is described as ‘spellbinding' (The Evening Standard), ‘astonishing' (iNews) and ‘devastatingly powerful' (The Daily Telegraph). Set in contemporary London, Piper's portrayal of a woman in her thirties desperate to conceive builds with elemental force to a staggering, shocking, climax. _______ National Theatre Live launched in June 2009 with a broadcast of the National Theatre production of Phèdre with Helen Mirren. They've since broadcast more than forty other productions live, from both the National Theatre and from other theatres in the UK. Their broadcasts have now been experienced by over 5.5 million people in over 2,000 venues around the world, including over 650 venues in the UK alone. Past broadcasts from the National Theatre have included Danny Boyle's Frankenstein with Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller; War Horse; Man and Superman with Ralph Fiennes; and Everyman with Chiwetel Ejiofor. Broadcasts from other UK theatres include Coriolanus from the Donmar Warehouse; A View from the Bridge from the Young Vic; Macbeth from the Manchester International Festival; and Hangmen and The Audience from London's West End. Our biggest single broadcast to date is Hamlet with Benedict Cumberbatch at the Barbican, which has been seen by over 550,000 people. In 2014 the National Theatre recorded its first production on Broadway, Of Mice and Men with James Franco and Chris O'Dowd, captured at the Longacre Theatre. Though each broadcast is filmed in front of a live audience in the theatre, cameras are carefully positioned throughout the auditorium to ensure that cinema audiences get the ‘best seat in the house' view of each production. Where these cameras are placed is different for each broadcast, to make sure that cinema audiences enjoy the best possible experience every time.
