Today's guest Lee Caraher is a CEO, author, and sought-after speaker. Lee is an acclaimed communications strategist known for her practical solutions to big problems. Lee started her PR company Double Forte during a crisis. Her mother was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer, and in order to be with her, she packed up and started her own firm. She built her business for the quality of life.  At 58, Lee's agency has just turned 20, and she has no plans of slowing down. As she puts it, age is her superpower. She says relevance is only as good as your ability to apply it to the current situation. You're constantly learning and evolving. It's never too late to learn how to communicate better – or at all.  Her business is built around the ability to communicate clearly. She says if you cannot communicate, you can't have a business or a relationship – your life will be mired with miscommunication and disaster.  But when you're a good communicator, not only are you good at giving direction, but you are good at taking direction. This puts you in a position to be surrounded by people who understand their role and how they impact others. Even in a crisis, everyone would know what they are meant to do.  She says everyone is and has always been, their own platform. People want to understand who they are purchasing from, who they are in business with, who they choose to spend their time with, and who they watch for entertainment. If those people don't align with them due to something they've said or are against your values, there is no reason to spend your time or money with them.  Lee says one of the most common mistakes in communications is that we assume people have understood what we said. We assume that our words mean the same thing to the person listening as they do to us – and they do not. The other aspect of being a great communicator is knowing yourself – what you're good at, what you're bad at, and what you should lean into and stay away from. Understanding how you react and recognizing that others have different types – like Myers Briggs, appreciation languages, etc. – will help you understand how to talk and listen to them. ===== Mentioned ===== 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: https://amzn.to/3UjI0Qn  5 Languages of Appreciation In The Work Place: https://amzn.to/3OQFRdR  ===== Connect with Lee Caraher ===== Sites: https://www.double-forte.com             https://www.leecaraher.com  Twitter: https://twitter.com/LeeCaraher  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LeeCaraher1  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/leecaraher/  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/leecaraher/  ===== Connect with Sarah ===== Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sarahwaltonpage  Instagram: https://instagram.com/thesarahwalton   Game on Girlfriend: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_Jen-dhtrcPvkgdjasgiyAk1NgPbZYRS  Most business owners don't know how much money they actually need to make to feel free. If you don't have your health, who the heck is running your business?  There's so much of our lives where we are sitting staring at boxes, staring at light, staring at cameras and video screens, and it's really important that we have this time to be out in nature, to breathe air all the way in, to fill our lungs completely with oxygen and to feel all of the physical sensations that come with it. I really do believe everyone can run, and to be honest, in my humble opinion, running parallels the journey of business. Our guest today is Beth Baker, a certified running coach that knows how bad running sucks...until it doesn't. After overcoming her own fear of running, she's gone on to personally coach 2,500 non-runners to run distances from 5K to marathons and get featured in Runner's World Magazine. Growing up, Beth says she always received Runner's World Magazine, but as a larger woman, she never saw herself represented in the pages. The patriarchy tells us only young, fit people run. But that's not true.  She says there is an instinctual response to running. When you are running by yourself, out in the open in the real world – so not on a treadmill – there is a fight or flight response that can be triggered.  When you're running fast, you can either feel chased or like you're chasing. And as women, we tend to feel chased.  I've heard people say they feel like they're going to die, that they will get left behind, and that something is going to go wrong. They feel very vulnerable, and they feel like they're on stage. All of these very weird feelings, but it's just running. There are tools to help with that, but it's real. It doesn't happen with everybody, but happens with new people who don't know what's on the other side, the feeling of endorphins, the feeling of relaxation. You have to be able to push through that initial fear response to get to the goodness. Your body is meant to move. And the older you get, the more it's important for you to do it. There's that motion is lotion; it's the stiffness that comes with age and achiness. It's just the more you move it, the better it feels, and it just you just have to be mindful of going slow. Slowness is building bigger muscles and having them as a tool because going fast isn't the goal. There is a propensity to feel not strong enough or not good enough. Give yourself permission to go slow. Having accountability partners and setting a small goal like running a 5K gives people something to look forward to. Beth remembers it took her a year to do her first 5K run, and now she has a Couch to 5K club that gears up in two months. Take it slow and embrace where you're at right now to move forward. Today’s conversation is a bit different for several reasons. First, a portion of this episode was initially featured on Beth Baker's podcast, Why We Run. I so enjoyed that conversation that I wanted to include the full-length version here. So in this episode, the tables are turned a bit and Beth Baker is asking ME the questions. But there’s something else that’s a bit different about this episode. It’s recorded while we are running. So you’re going to hear a lot of heavy breathing throughout our conversation. And you’re going to hear ambient noise and us talking about the bunnies and other things going on around us. I wanted to keep that in because that’s what happens when you’re running. You notice things. Beth and I talk about a lot of different things here and there are a ton of links in the show notes with more information. I think there are more links than I’ve ever had to add before. But I think that’ll make for a very informative and interesting listen. Also, not too long after we recorded this I had Beth on the She’s Bold Podcast, that was episode #103 so you can go back and listen to our conversation (not while we were running) so you can learn more about Beth Baker. With that, let’s get right to this conversation with me and Beth Baker. ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? Today’s conversation is with running coach and fellow podcaster (and fellow name-sharer) Beth Baker. If you’ve ever considered running or exercising or even just trying to figure out other ways to incrementally improve your life (and hopefully you ALL have, that’s why you’re listening), you’re going to really love this conversation. You could say Beth is a reluctant Seattleite. And despite us both being here for quite a while, we only recently got connected when I was a guest on her podcast, Why We Run (and I’m going to be releasing that episode here soon so you can hear our full conversation where she’s asking me the questions). Like me, Beth didn’t get into running because it was something she had done all her life. She got into it as an adult and had to navigate her way through it without a lot of mentorship (or even online information). It took her a year to work up to a 5K race but once she did that, her trajectory was fast. But she still remembers her reluctance and the self-talk and doubts that initially kept her from running. That’s why today she’s a running coach encouraging first time runners. Because she remembers what it was like to just start out. You don’t have to be a runner or have any interest in running to get inspired by this conversation and what it is that Beth does. So with that, enjoy this conversation with running coach, Beth Baker.   ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? "My goal is to get as many new runners as possible, increase the awesome community, and laugh while doing it." - Beth Baker   Beth Baker started Running Evolution out of trying to run and failing for almost a year. She says she made every mistake; bad sports bras, wrong shoes and just, well, doing it wrong. But after falling in love with the sport and helping her friends start running, she knew she was on to something. The business was created 10 years ago and 2000 new runners were made from the program. She has also started her new venture: Coach Running Evolution.com, a online coaching program, where she is certifying and licensing people to start their own coaching program for new runners. Beth is a colleague and friend of mine in Seattle.  We are friends because – well – I stalked her and told her I wanted to be her friend.  Seriously.  This is how beautiful friendships are made.  Beth creates running magic by helping women share the experiences of learning to run together.  I can’t say enough good things about the impact Beth has had on the thousands of runners she has coached.  I am delighted and honored to share Beth with you today. Listen in to hear Beth share: Why the first three miles of running are the hardest Why running with a group is so much more beneficial, mentally and physically The truth about running when it’s really hurt (hint: you’re fine) Why you don’t need to be fast or run far for running to “count” Why running communities are especially valuable to moms Why running slow can be exactly what you need How to build a community and business around running How to become a running coach even if you don’t have any coaching experience (and even if you’re not a fast runner) Links Mentioned: Run with Beth in Seattle: Running Evolution Become a running coach: Coach Running Evolution Beth on Twitter Beth on Instagram Book: Bird By Bird by Anne Lamont Thank you to our sponsors: Bissell: For the easiest and most mess-free way to bathe your dog at home go to: Bissell.
