How do we deconstruct binaries and colonial structures to flourish communities rooted in generosity? In this episode Amisha talks to Asmaa Guedira, a facilitator, consultant, artist, writer and designer catalysing transformation at the intersection of system change, leadership, feminism and regenerative futures. A Moroccan nomad, Asmaa thrives to build bridges between different cultures. From managing international development programs in South West Asia and North Africa to designing transformative learning experiences for leaders in Berlin, California, France or Australia, Asmaa has been connecting artivists, changemakers and leaders in over 20 countries. Asmaa is a fellow of the Policy Center for the Global South and BMW Foundation Leaders Program, and is involved in various global networks like OuiShare, Amanitas, Global Innovation Gathering, Sandbox or African Crossroads. She co-authored 2 books: ‘Société Collaborative' and ‘Le Manifeste des Crapauds Fous' and is currently writing her memoir about identity. Asmaa currently lives on Bundjalung Country, where she runs eco-feminists retreats with WELA. Her art addresses the colonisation of our bodies and mind, our intimacy, identity and the role of healing. Amisha and Asmaa share their experiences of a privileged ‘nomadic' lifestyle highlighting its shadows intertwined with new-age change-maker communities. They explore how we can re-invent these by deconstructing binaries and colonial structures so we may flourish communities that are rooted in ancient nomadic principles of generosity and humility that will serve our collective future. Asmaa shares her vulnerable journey of migration integrating an intersectional identity, blooming her queerness and a full sense of belonging. We learn that sharing our personal stories and growing our humility is a vital part of how we can all contribute to decolonisation; an invitation to understand our lives differently and to share knowledge that will move us from an extractive to a generous, simple and slow way of life. In this special episode, we are featuring That Digital Show. In the Philippines, class sizes in schools are often quite large with an average of 30 students per class. This makes keeping track of individual students' progress a challenge. To solve this problem, John and Chris Fiel, co-founders of Wela School Systems developed a digital solution for schools, teachers, and parents to keep track of basic administrative tasks like daily attendance-taking and keeping record of grades, among other things to keep paperwork at bay. Starting with just three schools upon launch, Wela now serves more than 200 schools on its platform. To make sure it meets the needs of users, the duo constantly asks for feedback from customers, and pick out the most common needs to address and build around. The startup also follows a freemium model so that schools can test and discover if the product is really adding value for them, before deciding to purchase it. Listen in to hear how Wela continues to win the hearts of educators, and the impact they are making on the Philippine education system. In this podcast, they also share their views on the future of education and how data can be used to improve teaching processes and the learning environment. John Fiel, CEO, Wela School Systems John's interest in the startup industry brought him to establish his own game development startup after college, which lasted for two years. Now, he is the Co-Founder and CEO of Wela School System. Wela is one of the Pioneering DOST Funded Startups in the Philippines. Wela is now running for five years and serving over 190 schools both national and international. Chris Fiel, CTO, Wela School Systems Chris is a serial technopreneur with the aim of creating disruptive and useful apps using the latest technology trends. His heart and inclination is into programming where his 25 years of experience as a freelance developer can speak of. He is currently into ERP, IoT and blockchain and looking for consulting and development projects along these areas. Quotes [05:50] - "Our focus has always hinged on our investment thesis of helping families generate a consistent stream of income utilizing marketable securities that can fill their spending gap in retirement to help them sleep well at night." ~ Matt Reiner [11:39] - "We were growing at a pretty good clip, and it was putting a lot of pressure on our team. The challenge that we were facing was nothing was really integrated. Our team had to manage and maintain their manila folders on the desk, and things were falling through the cracks. And it wasn't anything due to our people. It was more of our process." ~ Matt Reiner [18:27] - "Our ethos is not to be a replacement for technologies that advisors are using. We're not going to recreate a paperwork process, the calendar scheduling process, or a reporting engine. We will tap into the companies that have already done a great job with that and be the air traffic controller." ~ Matt Reiner Links Matt Reiner on LinkedIn Matt Reiner on Twitter Capital Investments Advisors Wela Strategies Benjamin eMoney Advisor Bridging the Gap Podcast The Ride of a Lifetime: Lessons Learned from 15 Years as CEO Shoe Dog It Takes What It Takes: How to Think Neutrally and Gain Control of Your Life The Daily Stoic Podcast Charles Schwab Fidelity Investments Connect with our hosts Ali McCarthy Sanjeev Kumar Marc Butler Skience Subscribe and stay in touch Apple Podcasts Spotify Google Podcasts

Josh & Tanner are joined by actual Pokémon Lore Master, Daniel Dockery, author of the book "Monster Kids"! They chat about their own Pokémon origin stories; some of the most interesting anecdotes Daniel learned while writing the book about the series' beginnings; whether or not the anime is good; and of course learn his Sweetie and Barfy. Plus, he gives a vibe check on if Parrothead & Skull Grunt's teams actually fit the themes they're trying to embody. From there, we head down Route 6 for this week's journey "route by route." We encounter seemingly haunted doll Hapu, learn and quickly forget about Battle Royals, and then meet a lot of bad and or sexy guys in Wela Volcano Park. That's right, say "Alola!" to this season's first Fur Affinity Check. Notes: Follow @dandock on Twitter for great Pokémon (and non-Pokémon) tweets alike, and buy his book detailing the first several years of the Pokémon and monster-catching frenzy, Monster Kids, wherever books are sold!

WOMEN'S CLIMATE LEADERSHIPWHERE DOES IT TAKE US?8TH MARCH 2021Produced by Vivien LangfordGUESTS:Victoria McKenzie-McHarg - Women's environmental Leadership WELA and Chair of the Climate Action Network Australia CANALucy Manne - CEO of 350.org AustraliaJanet Laurence - Artist and Curator of REQUIEM at the Festival of Sydney 2021Kerrie Leishman - Painter on her exhibition "The New Beauty" featuring wind turbines at Waubra VicMusic : Montaigne with the song that launched the School Strike for Climate in Sydney 2019- "Ready to Go!"and "Mother earth" composed by Aunty Ruby Sims to launch the Beyond Zero Emissions "Million Jobs Plan" sent to us by Dominque Hes The theme of international Women's day this year is Women in leadership.Victoria McKenzie-McHarg launches the show. Her IWD hero is Julie Lyford who, with Groundswell Gloucester fended off a gas company in their valley and then won a court case to stop the Rocky Hill Coal mine going ahead. Julie is a graduate of the Women's environmental leadership course. Victoria says it's obvious that the present political, societal and corporate leadership is failing on climate action. a more collaborative, diverse and supportive form of leadership is needed. She speaks about Nicola Rivers who with young children could not see herself as a CEO but through mentoring came to the idea of sharing a CEO position which she now has as CoCEO of Environmental Justice Australia.WELA is there to open doors for women. They have established a giving circle to fund women led projects and initiatives for our envoronment.Women's Environmental Leadership Australia | The Women’s Environmental Leadership Australia (WELA) program is designed by and for women environmentalists to support women taking environmental leadership in Australia. sign up for our monthly e-newsletter and join us on Facebook. To celebrate IWD we talk to two artists who lead us towards a change of heart around our connection to the land and landscape. They are Janet Laurence and Kerrie Leishman. Janet Laurence curated REQUIEM, a week of art events in an old Reservoir near Paddington Town Hall. As we descend into the sunken cathedral she invites us to lament and reflect on the black summer bush fires. It is a place of reckoning and the audience response in Qand A was all about "what can we do?"Art helps us to see what's invisible and Janet says blindness to nature breeds indifference. In front of her installation of waters made turbid by charcoal and dead matter left by the bushfires, many speakers such as Bruce Shillingsworth, urged us to think differently about mother earth and her lifeblood rivers. In an interview later Janet told me that the Art World did not easily accept her focus on climate change. But she does not want to plunge them into a defensive reaction and the sheer tenderness, the scale and the science behind her work is opening many minds.'I want you to linger': how Janet Laurence's art compels you to save the earth | Art and design | The Guardian Kerrie Leishman says that wind turbines create a new aesthetic. This challenges our usual idea of landscape. But like Janet Laurence she does not want to put us on the defensive. Her paintings are a subtle form of climate leadership taking us along as she comes to see the turbines as gentle giants. Her exhibition called "The New Beauty" was inspired by the wind farms at Waubra in Victoria.blog - Kerrie Leishman Paintings and Illustration Lucy Manne started the fossil Fuel Watch project during COVID. They report on such things as the media coverage of COVID recovery funds going towards gas projects rather than the jobs rich care economy. They also report on the national conversation around citizens' rights to protest. One example recently is when the mining lobby portrayed community groups as "vexatious" Graeme Samuels found that such legal challenges are the "foundation of our democracy". She recommended that we watch the Greenpeace film "Dirty Money" and join 350.org in their campaign to "Fund our Future not Gas".She talks about the shift in energy resulting from the Biden Administration's climate policy in the USA.Will this help us turn a distant 2050 target to a manageable 2030 target for reducing carbon emissions to zero? Her women's day hero is Milly Telford founder of SeedMob. The campaign she wants us to support is the Torres Strait Islanders' landmark human rights complaint against the Australian Government. They say the government has not adequately reduced Greenhouse gas emissions or helped them adapt to changing climate conditions. Lucy herself is a shining example of women's leadership coming up from the Australian Youth Climate Coalition and now as CEO.Australia – 350.org’s Fossil Fuel Watch project

Wela Mlokoti was born and grew up in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape. Her family moved to Bloemfontein when she was in Grade 10 and she completed the remainder of her high school education at Eunice Girls School, the top maths and science school in the Free State at the time. Wela has an LLB from the University of Cape Town which she received on a full bursary from the Free State provincial government for attaining 7 distinctions in her matric year. In 2013, the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers awarded Wela an internship at the Kolodny Law Group in Beverly Hills, California after Wela wrote a winning essay on surrogacy law. That year, Wela was one of only 4 students selected from each of UCT, UWC and Stellenbosch to participate in the Cape Bar Exposure Program. The Cape Bar Exposure Program was designed to familiarize students with the Cape Town bar and it was there that Wela solidified her desire to ultimately become an advocate. In her penultimate year, the recruiters at ENSAfrica (Africa's largest law firm) invited Wela to interview for articles of clerkship and consequently offered her a contract to commence her articles after graduation. In her final year, Wela received a coveted clerkship at the Constitutional Court. She then deferred her articles for a year and worked in Justice Chris Jafta's chambers for the period 2015/2016. Wela was then admitted to Duke Law School to read for her LLM and was awarded the Judy Horowitz Scholarship by the school in 2016, as well as receiving a scholarship from the Oppenheimer Trust. She was awarded her LLM degree in May 2017 and returned to South Africa to clerk again at the Constitutional Court for the remainder of the year. Having deferred the commencement date for two years, Wela then went on to serve her articles at ENSAfrica. She is a published writer, and has written articles on a variety of issues ranging from cyber security to privacy rights. When she isn't sharing valuable tips for law students using her social media platforms, Wela can be found blogging about natural hair or breaking a sweat on the squash court. Wela is also an avid runner, having run the 2 Oceans Half Marathon six times. Tune in to hear about Wela's extremely colourful and scenic route through her career in the legal profession. “The Wela Way is really all about bringing together information and sharing it in a way that people can create really abundant, extraordinary lives that have meaning. They're going to be happy at the end of their life; they're not going to have regrets.” – Nancy Phillips Nancy Phillips hails from Toronto, Ontario where she grew up in a family of six, with a healthy understanding of money and saving for the future. She was managing her money (her allowance) at the young age of seven, started working for her father at fourteen and had two additional jobs by time she was sixteen. After a life-changing motorcycle accident at the age of eighteen, Nancy's competitive sports ambitions were set aside, and bigger questions emerged about how she could contribute to the world. For over twenty-five years, Nancy worked in the sports medicine and international corporate medical world. She became a financial health author and speaker after a series of major life events left her questioning what exactly she needed to teach her children for them to lead meaningful, happy and successful lives. She wanted a comprehensive and simple program that combined personal values and success concepts with basic financial skills and could not find what she was looking for. Nancy has combined her global research, personal experience, and desire for simplicity and relevance to develop effective methods which help people create a life of meaning and financial well-being. Nancy's Wela Way resources are for both adults and youth. Her Steps to Success guides for young adults and parents have been successfully reviewed by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and are used internationally by families and financial professionals with their clients. She also developed a series of Zela Wela Kids financial storybooks which have been successfully piloted with over 1,900 elementary school children. Nancy's work has been featured in media outlets such as ABC news, CBC news, Yahoo Finance, the Chicago Tribune and CNN. Nancy's passion is fueled by her adamant belief that early financial education should be accessible to all families and her motivation is fueled by the positive impact her resources create. Show Notes [02:02] Patrick introduces his next guest, Nancy Phillips [04:47] Nancy and Patrick kick it off! [05:03] Nancy gives us her elevator pitch plus a little bit about why she's doing what she does. [06:03] Witnessing the many gaps that exist around financial life skills, Nancy created a concept for teaching financial literacy to kids which became The Wela Way. [07:39] Nancy describes how lack of education around money, finances and having a healthy relationship with these concepts is triggering serious mental and physical health issues and contributing to what she sees as a “catastrophic situation” in our society. [11:53] Nancy takes us back to the events and challenges in her life which compelled her to start the financial education path with her own kids, then broaden her reach to help other families. [15:54] Surviving a life-altering motorcycle accident at 18 intensifies Nancy's understanding that she was meant to contribute to the world in a big way. [19:46] Nancy talks about the competitive sports she was involved with prior to the accident and the subsequent corporate career she chose as a kinesiologist working to develop products to help orthopedic patients and people with injuries. [21:57] Reflecting on the physical and emotional pain she experienced from her injury, her divorce and the faltering economy, Nancy recognizes the gifts and awareness that all of these challenges brought to her life. [26:57] What was Nancy's financial landscape as she embarked on her journey of financial literacy for her kids? [28:38] Nancy describes how one conversation with a woman when she was 21 years old changed her financial trajectory which eventually resulted in Nancy developing the GISS method: Give, Invest,
Episode #48 - Nancy Phillips - Wealth and Well Being: The Wela Way by Patrick Francey
On Wednesday we talked about what goes into picking the right financial advisor. You'd want to be sure of the person your entrusting with your financials, after all. But would you trust a financial advisor who's a couple of decades younger than you? We're asking that same question to our wonderful panel of contributors: special guest Shannon Mclay (from Financially-Blonde.com), Len Penzo (from LenPenzo.com), and Paula Pant from Afford Anything. PLUS, in a second Friday headline, living next to a lottery winner makes YOU more likely to go broke. What's up with that? And halfway through the show we're taking a break to talk to Matt Reiner from Wela, the all-in-one budget app. Wela can track your daily spending, group transactions, and the app's AI, Benjamin, can answer any questions you may have about your money. Of course, we'll answer a three-oh call for help to the Blooom hotline. Julianne works on commission... how can she make a useful budget on a variable income? Also, should we be waiting on the market to go on sale before we buy more stocks? Thanks also to MagnifyMoney.com for sponsoring Stacking Benjamins. I have discussed in previous episodes of the podcast about the importance of having a short term and long-term financial strategy. The former is accomplished by a budget and the discipline to keep track of expenses and keep within the limits of that budget. In fact, in Episode 13 I reviewed the online budgeting tool EveryDollar to maintain that strategy. But the long-term strategy is having savings and a retirement plan, so that you will have the peace of mind that comes with knowing that your efforts now are paying off and that your financial freedom will last for a lifetime. To help you do that, in this episode of the podcast I review Wela, an online tool that gives you the ability to gain an overall view of your entire financial situation from one free application: investments, cash, credit card debt, student loans, and real estate.

You all know that Airborne is B.S., right? Firewatch is a great game. Lost Highway is a good movie. Neither of these are probably for the kids. But Inside Out is. Lex is away this week so Jon and Moltz start by talking about movie trailers. Surprise. The trailer for the new Ghostbusters looks pretty good but has one problem that bugs us. Jon is looking forward to Batman vs. Superman, Moltz is skeptical. Jon has seen and recommends Deadpool, but it's clearly not for kids. That taken care of, we move on to civics, like how to talk to your kids about Donald Trump. Maybe someone should have had that conversation with Chris Christie.
