Global consulting group Sia has announced the acquisition of The Upside, a British consulting agency, as part of the firm's strategic expansion in the UK market. As part of this investment in The Upside, Sia is deepening its focus on brand, innovation, and culture in the UK. The acquisition also strengthens Sia's presence in the global tech sector, which will now represent 12% of the firm's worldwide turnover. This follows a €250 million minority investment from funds managed by Blackstone's private equity strategy for individual investors in January, to support Sia's continued growth. The Upside Founded in 2013, The Upside has built a strong reputation as a trusted partner among some of the leading companies in tech, retail, and consumer goods. It delivers a broad range of projects, from brand positioning, product and service innovation, sustainability and cultural impact, and the strategy behind leading consumer product launches. With a team of 20 strategists, The Upside generated £6.2M (€7.2M) in revenue in FY24. Niku Banaie, founder of The Upside, will lead this initiative and join the Sia leadership team as Partner. Additionally, Nigel Morris, Chairman of The Upside and former Executive Director at Dentsu, will take on the role of Senior Advisor to Sia in the UK and globally. "This acquisition underscores our commitment to the UK as a key market for growth and innovation. With its dynamic business landscape and rich creative ecosystem, the UK is an ideal environment for our strategic expansion." said Gary O'Sullivan, Managing Partner for SIA, UK & Ireland. "The Upside's mission to drive better business growth by uniting culture, commerce and creativity aligns with our vision. We're excited about the opportunities this partnership unlocks and the enhanced capabilities we can now offer." Niku Banaie, CEO & Founder of The Upside said: "From the start, The Upside has been driven by a desire to challenge conventions and create meaningful impact. Joining Sia is an exciting next step, not just because of our shared ambition, but because of the depth of expertise they bring - particularly in AI, which is world-class. Their capabilities will enhance what we do and open new possibilities for our clients. This marks the beginning of an exciting journey and I look forward to what we can build together." Welcome to The How To Fail F-Word miniseries! Three days, three guests, three different F-words.Today, we have Nigel Morris...on fuel.Nigel Morris is the definition of a self-made man: born in Essex, the son of an army sergeant father and a Welsh mother, he left school at 15 before going on to co-found one of the biggest banks in the world, Capital One. How did he do it? What motivates him? How does he manage his ambition?A slightly different How To Fail episode from usual, but perhaps an even more interesting one because of it. We don't get that many business people offering to share their failures in such an open way and I'm very grateful to Nigel for doing so.This episode was recorded in front of a live audience at an annual event hosted by Clearscore, the free credit score app. Full disclosure: Clearscore is my husband's company. I was not paid a fee so this is not a branded episode (but they're really good fyi).--How To Fail With Elizabeth Day is hosted and produced by Elizabeth Day. When I first heard that QED Investors and BCG were putting together a report on the future of fintech I knew it was going to be good. I was not wrong. Never before have we seen an in-depth and rigorous analysis of where the industry is today and more importantly where we are headed. The report is titled Global Fintech 2023: Reimagining the Future of Finance, and it provides a level of optimism that has been missing in fintech for the past 12-18 months. But this is not blind optimism, it is based on data and research, both qualitative and quantitative. The finished product is a seminal report that has been the talk of the industry for the last month and a half.My next guests on the Fintech One-on-One podcast are Nigel Morris, the Co-Founder and Managing Partner at QED Investors and Rishi Varma, Managing Director and Senior Partner at the Boston Consulting Group. Nigel gave a presentation on this report at the recent Fintech Nexus USA event (video here) but in this interview, we delve deeply into the genesis of the report, some of its key findings, and what it means for the industry. In this podcast you will learn:Why QED and BCG decided to come together to produce this report. The size of the financial services industry globally and fintech's part in it.The methodology they used to arrive at these global revenue numbers.A chronicle of the last three years in fintech.Where we are at today with equity funding in fintech by stage of company. The growth of fintech globally over the next 7 years and where this growth will come from. The eye-popping size that fintech is expected to be in 2030.What verticals within fintech will see the most growth. Why embracing financial inclusion has enormous potential. How and when will fintech become as profitable as the incumbents. The biggest risks to the growth of fintech. What is most exciting about the future of fintech.Connect with Nigel on LinkedInConnect with Rishi on LinkedInConnect with QED on LinkedInConnect with BCG on LinkedInConnect with Fintech One-on-One: Tweet me @PeterRenton Connect with me on LinkedIn Find previous Fintech One-on-One episodes

QED was co-founded by Frank Rotman and Nigel Morris, who was one of the co-founders of Capital One, and QED has taken a similar, data-centric strategic approach to its investing in the next generation of financial services disruptors. With more than $3 billion under management, QED invests in the US and UK but also has a growing presence in Latin America and other emerging markets in Asia and Africa. It has backed well-known fintech players and unicorns, including Credit Karma, SoFi, NuBank and Remitly. Like QED founders as well as other partners, Packer has a background in financial services – at Capital One, where he spent ten years in a variety of roles, including running small business lending. It's that kind of operational experience that QED believes gives it a distinct advantage in choosing its investments and taking an active role in helping them succeed. Underlying the firm's philosophy is a belief it can help fintech startups increase their odds of success by reducing the number of contingent probabilities or dependencies involved in the business plan.
