Building HVAC Science - Building Performance, Science, Health & Comfort
In this episode of the Building HVAC Science podcast, co-hosts Bill Spohn and Eric Kaiser are joined by Eric's father, Mark Kaiser, for a special father-son discussion. Mark shares his experiences with building and improving a unique energy-efficient home in Carlinville, Illinois. His journey began in the late 1970s, when he retrofitted a modest house to reduce energy consumption using insulation, solar energy, and a variety of unconventional methods. Mark talks about his motivation for energy efficiency, stemming from his role overseeing utilities at Blackburn College, where he gained valuable insights into energy management and building systems. Throughout the conversation, Mark delves into the construction techniques he employed, including double wall construction for added insulation, using solar heat gain, and even creating a thermal mass storage system with water-filled milk jugs to retain heat. He explains how he balanced various heating systems, such as solar, wood, and natural gas, and how his hands-on approach—digging around the foundation, raising the roofline, and using sustainable materials—resulted in a home that remains energy-efficient to this day. The Kaisers also touch on innovative electrical systems, such as 12-volt and 24-volt setups, and how these have helped keep energy costs low. Mark's deep understanding of thermal mass, energy usage, and alternative construction methods highlights the importance of thoughtful, sustainable home design. As the discussion wraps up, Mark reflects on the lessons learned from maintaining and improving his home over the years, emphasizing the ongoing challenges of perfecting energy-efficient construction. The conversation offers listeners a unique blend of family history, practical tips, and a deep dive into the technical aspects of home energy management. A wonderfully insightful, open and frank conversation with one of the UK's most successful and impactful entrepreneurs. A journey from Morecambe to Blackburn to Wigan (mostly the Casino) and on to London where Kensington Market sparked the flame for winning fashion brand. A fascinating story of two highly successful businesses borne out of a strong, dynamic relationship. Our guest came to prominence in the 1980's with fashion brand Red or Dead, created by Wayne and his equally talented partner Gerardine Hemingway MBE. In this conversation we explore the opportunities, challenges and decisions that shaped a global fashion brand and subsequently the driving force of Hemingway Design, project successes and future plans. Outline · Early years, Piers to Casino's · Finding a Partner in Life and Fashion · Rent or Debt to Red or Dead · Growing a Global Brand · Next Chapter… Hemingway Design · Passion in Business and Design · What fires you up and drives you in your role? · Advice for Partners in Business Website: https://www.hemingwaydesign.co.uk Twitter: @HemingwayDesign Bio: Bio - Wayne Hemingway MBE. One bright day in 1981, Wayne “borrowed” his girlfriend's (now wife) Gerardine's rent money to buy practice space for the band he then played in. To recoup the cash, he emptied their wardrobes, which were full of handmade and vintage clothing and to his amazement quickly sold out from his pitch on Camden Market. The realisation that money could be made from fashion suddenly dawned. Alongside Gerardine, Wayne built Red or Dead into a globally-celebrated label and, after 21 consecutive seasons on the catwalk, sold it in a multi-million-pound deal to the Pentland Group. In 1999, fresh from the sale of Red or Dead, Wayne and Gerardine embarked on a new adventure: HemingwayDesign. And the rest, they say, is history. Wayne qualified from University with a BSc degree in Geography and Town Planning which he has subsequently had an opportunity to put to very good use with collaborations with major builders including Wimpey on an award-winning site, Staiths, in Gateshead. Wayne spent 6 years as a Design Council Trustee Board and having been with CABE for a decade since its inception (as Chair of Building For Life), has been a Mayors London Leader and currently supports the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan as a Design Advocate. He is an advisor to House of Commons Select Committees on coastal regeneration, got an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list of 2006, is a Professor in The Built Environment Department of Northumbria University, a Doctor of Design at Wolverhampton, Lancaster and Stafford, and an Honorary Fellow of Blackburn College, the University of Cumbria and Regents University. Hemingway Design deliver the following services Identities - to reinforce like-minded brands with strategic design thinking Products - with sustainability, economic well-being and British credentials Uniforms - for multi-nationals, the transport operators and the high street Environments - whether that's public spaces, mass-market housing, interiors or workspaces Events - allowing the creative industries to grow and thrive - and to have fun! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/hresource/message
To mark the launch of Edge's new grant fund – the Edge Innovation Fund – Jane Samuels, Director of Projects and Operations at the Foundation joined Gavin O'Meara to talk all things funding. The Edge Innovation Fund is a new approach to funding for Edge. The fund, which opened on 14th September 2021 will stay open until the end of 2025. There is £300k available for the balance of 2021 and then the fund will be refreshed every 1st January until 2025. The minimum amount available is £20k and the maximum for a one year project is £100k. Projects which run for multiple years (up to a maximum of 3 years) can bid for up to the entire amount in the funding pot.Edge is looking for disruptive innovators with ideas and plans to challenge the current approach to education in the UK. All projects must support Edge's strategic aim for a broad, flexible and engaging curriculum, providing high quality vocational and professional education which is employer and community engaged. More details about the Fund, the criteria and how to apply can be found here.In the first episode of Edgy Thinking, Jane and Gavin discussed the new grant fund and how important it is to provide a source of funding for innovative education. They were joined by two organisations previously funded by Edge. Stefano Pacelli, at Blackburn College talked about their two successful bids, one centred on automotive engineering and one on eco-construction. Stefano stressed the Edge funding had allowed the College to not only develop state of the art facilities but also to provide lecturers the time and resources to develop deep and long-lasting employment engagement. This enables the College to put learners at the heart of relationships with local and national employers and engage with their community,The second guest was Harriet Bird, who is Senior Trusts and Grants Manager at the Barbican Centre. Harriet spoke about Edge's support for their Careers Rewired programme which looked to raise awareness and understanding of careers opportunity within the creative sector. Edge funding allowed the Barbican to develop a new approach to engagement with local schools which brought inner city students to the Barbican Centre for the first time and took creative professionals into the classrooms. Both Stefano and Harriet spoke about the challenges of securing funding and of the impact that the projects had had. Measuring the impact and evaluating the success of grant funded projects is key to Edge, who have recently released an Impact Report on the whole of their Grant Funding programme.

The course took at a critical look at the topics, meaning that there was a particular focus to issues of power and control in digital media. On June 19th, 2015 America and Great Britain celebrated the 800th birthday of the Magna Carta. This small piece of paper represents one of the two greatest documents westerns have, yet most know nothing about it. We can tell you about Robin Hood, Russel Crow and Kevin Costner versions, but we cannot tell you where the backdrop of this fictional story came from. But, without it, we do not the Bill of rights or our Constitution. We simply would not have the United States of America. Long, long ago, students were taught the principles of liberty in the school houses and homes, but that has long since passed away. While Common Core promises to equip today's children to be able to work in the 21st century, it does nothing to prepare them to live and operate as a free individual in a republic. Bring your family around and join returning guest, KrisAnn Hall, as we discuss the significance of the Magna Carta. KrisAnne Hall is an attorney and former prosecutor who travels the country teaching the Constitution and the history that gave us our founding documents. She is the host of The KrisAnne Hall Show, she pulls no punches, puts Liberty First and gives no quarter to those who hide behind party labels. Like no other can, KrisAnne teachers tell what the founders had to say on today's relevant issues. KrisAnne is a disabled Army veteran, a Russian linguist, a mother, a pastor's wife and a patriot. She received her undergraduate degree in Bio-Chemistry from Blackburn College in 1991 and her J.D. from the University of Florida, Levin College of Law. KrisAnne lives in North Florida with her husband JC and their adopted son Colton.
