Buckminster Fuller and Cedric Price were mentors when Peter Murray OBE was studying architecture in the 1960s. Peter Cook and the Archigram Group were idols, “they were the Beatles of architecture at the time”. Not a bad selection of teachers for someone interested in the craft from the age of ten.  Since then, Murray has had a huge impact on shaping the city of London. Although he qualified as an architect, he didn't become one. His calling was to carve out a huge career writing about and promoting it. He founded the design and architecture magazine Blueprint and the global communications company Wordsearch. And curated major exhibitions at the Royal Academy in London. He also started the London Festival of Architecture - now a significant annual event in the cultural life of the capital.  Murray has written and published books about architecture, been a Mayor's Design Advocate, Chairman of the London Society and a Visiting Professor at the IE Business School in Madrid. He is Chairman of the Temple Bar Trust and has gathered a huge list of accolades through his career. Including the OBE he received for leadership in the arts, architecture, city planning, design, publication and charity in 2021. He's also a keen cyclist, raising money for charity each year through cycling, and advocate for active cities.   Today, his time is focused on the New London Architecture centre, which he founded in 2005 as a centre for debate and discussion about the changing face of the capital. Some might say London is a better place to live thanks to him.  Listen in as Vince and Peter discuss working in design media in swinging 60s London, how his wildly successful studio Wordsearch came to be, and why, when you see an opportunity, you have to take it.  https://nla.london/ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Susan Szenasy is one of the best known design critics and editors of the past four decades; she served as editor of Metropolis magazine from the mid 1980s until a few years ago. In 2017, she was the winner of a Cooper Hewitt National Design Award. During her tenure, Metropolis became one of the most expansive design publications in the American media landscape -- covering all disciplines and tackling sustainability as part of design early and deeply. We talked to her about ethics, Trombe walls, why the disciplines don't talk to one another much, and how the “architects pollute” cover story in 2003 spotlighted built environment emissions. Susan's view on design is all encompassing. She has the appreciation of a historian and the the gravity of a pragmatist (perhaps rooted in her childhood in Communist Hungary). She showed how a media platform could elevate voices and ideas -- about who design is for, how it relates to ecology and planet, how we teach design and ethics for designers, and how design is valued and funded. A collection of her writing and talks is available in Szenasy: Design Advocate (Metropolis Books, 2014).

A wonderfully insightful, open and frank conversation with one of the UK's most successful and impactful entrepreneurs. A journey from Morecambe to Blackburn to Wigan (mostly the Casino) and on to London where Kensington Market sparked the flame for winning fashion brand. A fascinating story of two highly successful businesses borne out of a strong, dynamic relationship. Our guest came to prominence in the 1980's with fashion brand Red or Dead, created by Wayne and his equally talented partner Gerardine Hemingway MBE. In this conversation we explore the opportunities, challenges and decisions that shaped a global fashion brand and subsequently the driving force of Hemingway Design, project successes and future plans. Outline · Early years, Piers to Casino's · Finding a Partner in Life and Fashion · Rent or Debt to Red or Dead · Growing a Global Brand · Next Chapter… Hemingway Design · Passion in Business and Design · What fires you up and drives you in your role? · Advice for Partners in Business Website: https://www.hemingwaydesign.co.uk Twitter: @HemingwayDesign Bio: Bio - Wayne Hemingway MBE. One bright day in 1981, Wayne “borrowed” his girlfriend's (now wife) Gerardine's rent money to buy practice space for the band he then played in. To recoup the cash, he emptied their wardrobes, which were full of handmade and vintage clothing and to his amazement quickly sold out from his pitch on Camden Market. The realisation that money could be made from fashion suddenly dawned. Alongside Gerardine, Wayne built Red or Dead into a globally-celebrated label and, after 21 consecutive seasons on the catwalk, sold it in a multi-million-pound deal to the Pentland Group. In 1999, fresh from the sale of Red or Dead, Wayne and Gerardine embarked on a new adventure: HemingwayDesign. And the rest, they say, is history. Wayne qualified from University with a BSc degree in Geography and Town Planning which he has subsequently had an opportunity to put to very good use with collaborations with major builders including Wimpey on an award-winning site, Staiths, in Gateshead. Wayne spent 6 years as a Design Council Trustee Board and having been with CABE for a decade since its inception (as Chair of Building For Life), has been a Mayors London Leader and currently supports the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan as a Design Advocate. He is an advisor to House of Commons Select Committees on coastal regeneration, got an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list of 2006, is a Professor in The Built Environment Department of Northumbria University, a Doctor of Design at Wolverhampton, Lancaster and Stafford, and an Honorary Fellow of Blackburn College, the University of Cumbria and Regents University. Hemingway Design deliver the following services Identities - to reinforce like-minded brands with strategic design thinking Products - with sustainability, economic well-being and British credentials Uniforms - for multi-nationals, the transport operators and the high street Environments - whether that's public spaces, mass-market housing, interiors or workspaces Events - allowing the creative industries to grow and thrive - and to have fun! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/hresource/message

NFT stands for "non-fungible token." This kind of token is like Bitcoin, except while you can trade Bitcoin and have more of the same thing that represents real money at a varying market value, each NFT is unique. You possess the token that says you own something, like an art piece, and you can trade it, but if you do, you'll be getting an entirely different piece. To keep all the parts in place, there's enforced (artificial, but isn't everything?) scarcity.

Should it be dense? Should it be sparse?” On building digital tools for designers, 29:15 “I love building tools that empower the designer to tell a computer how to do something rather than doing it themselves. Time is a very precious resource for everybody. Literally anything that can save time for designers, I try to do.” Handy info and links for this episode: Firebase: Google's mobile platform for quickly developing high-quality apps.
