It is often the passion and activism of women's movements that powers and transforms evidence to influence policy change. So how can we support activists and their movements and help create impact? Bringing activists together with researchers and other experts is key as effective research and action on violence against women and violence against girls requires a holistic approach to knowledge sharing. In this episode we hear some transformative success stories of activism in action, like the “One in Nine” Campaign in South Africa. We learn about some of the most impactful forms of advocacy and activism. And we find out how ‘small but mighty' activist projects can be just as impactful as more wide scale global movements. Our guests are: Nwabisa Jama Shai, Specialist Researcher, South African Medical Research Council Charbel Maydaa, Founder & General Director, MOSAIC Natsnet Ghebrebrhan, VAW Prevention Coordinator, Raising Voices Your hosts are: Elizabeth Dartnall, Executive Director, SVRI Angelica Pino, Grants Manager and Capacity Strengthening Specialist, SVRI Find out more at svri.org.

Research is only useful if it leads to meaningful change. So, when assessing what works to end violence against women and violence against girls, how can we ensure research sparks action? This is called research uptake, or research for impact, and is a process that's too often neglected. Despite its undeniable importance, it's often poorly funded, difficult to measure and there's little guidance on how to achieve it. In this episode we find out how to address these issues, and discover why it needs to be made a top priority in all research projects. We find out what makes an effective research for impact programme, hearing lessons learnt from the What Works To Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls' programme. And we meet a researcher whose project serves as a shining example of how it can be done positively. Our guests are: Diana Arango, Senior Gender-Based Violence and Development Specialist, World Bank Group Wilson Hernández Breña, Adjunct Researcher, Group for the Analysis of Development (GRADE) from Peru Leane Ramsoomar, Public Health Researcher & Research Uptake Specialist, Gender and Health Research Unit, South African Medical Research Council Your hosts are: Elizabeth Dartnall, Executive Director, SVRI Angelica Pino, Grants Manager and Capacity Strengthening Specialist, SVRI Find out more at svri.org.

Throughout this podcast we've heard about many incredible programmes that have been taking place globally to prevent violence against women and violence against girls. But which of these interventions have proven most effective - what is the evidence telling us? This was a major question at the heart of the What Works To Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls' programme, and in this episode we explore its findings. We also discover why feminism needs to be the core value at the centre of all interventions, we hear the amazing success story of a study in Nicaragua called Candies In Hell, and we learn about the impact of conflict and war on violence against women and violence against girls. Our guests are: Rachel Jewkes, Executive Scientist, Research Strategy in the South African Medical Research Council Office of the President. The fund, which opened on 14th September 2021 will stay open until the end of 2025. There is £300k available for the balance of 2021 and then the fund will be refreshed every 1st January until 2025. The minimum amount available is £20k and the maximum for a one year project is £100k. Projects which run for multiple years (up to a maximum of 3 years) can bid for up to the entire amount in the funding pot.Edge is looking for disruptive innovators with ideas and plans to challenge the current approach to education in the UK. All projects must support Edge's strategic aim for a broad, flexible and engaging curriculum, providing high quality vocational and professional education which is employer and community engaged. More details about the Fund, the criteria and how to apply can be found here.In the first episode of Edgy Thinking, Jane and Gavin discussed the new grant fund and how important it is to provide a source of funding for innovative education. They were joined by two organisations previously funded by Edge. Stefano Pacelli, at Blackburn College talked about their two successful bids, one centred on automotive engineering and one on eco-construction. Stefano stressed the Edge funding had allowed the College to not only develop state of the art facilities but also to provide lecturers the time and resources to develop deep and long-lasting employment engagement. This enables the College to put learners at the heart of relationships with local and national employers and engage with their community,The second guest was Harriet Bird, who is Senior Trusts and Grants Manager at the Barbican Centre. Harriet spoke about Edge's support for their Careers Rewired programme which looked to raise awareness and understanding of careers opportunity within the creative sector. Edge funding allowed the Barbican to develop a new approach to engagement with local schools which brought inner city students to the Barbican Centre for the first time and took creative professionals into the classrooms. Both Stefano and Harriet spoke about the challenges of securing funding and of the impact that the projects had had. Measuring the impact and evaluating the success of grant funded projects is key to Edge, who have recently released an Impact Report on the whole of their Grant Funding programme.

Matthew van Poortvliet, Grants Manager, Education Endowment Foundation, gives a talk for the Department of Education public seminar on 21st November 2016. The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) was established in 2011 and has so far committed over £75 million to education research projects involving over 7,000 schools. It is perhaps best known for the Teaching and Learning Toolkit, a synthesis of research used by two thirds of schools in England, and for the use of RCTs in education. As EEF passes its 5th anniversary, and the publication of over 60 trial evaluations, this presentation will discuss findings from that research and lessons learnt to date. It will first highlight emerging areas of promise and some examples of projects that have been more and less effective. It will then discuss the challenges of translating these findings into practice, and how approaches can be taken to scale. Finally, it will look at priorities for EEF’s work in the future, including the challenges of conducting trials in new areas.
